I turned away and limped to the sitting room while Rhoda ran after me.

I froze from the sight that I saw.

And instantly knew Rylan wasn't what I thought he was.

My breath caught in my throat.

There, in the center of the living room, stood Rylan…getting slapped hard. Over and over again by his so-called mother Raine.

His mother’s hand rose again, and again, each slap echoing like gunshots in my ears. He didn’t flinch, He didn’t block her. He just stood there, shoulders still, head bowed slightly. As if he believed he deserved it. Seeing this weakened my spirit.

Then she pushed him with force.

She tried to slap him again, then I moved instantly, and caught her wrist mid-air before she could strike him again.

“Enough!” I snapped.

Rylan straightened up quickly and stepped in front of me, shielding me from her. His hand flew with hurried signs, he was flashing fake smiles at me.

He gave me that look that says, “It’s fine, Aurora. Please… go inside.”
