I turned away and limped to the sitting room while Rhoda ran after me.

I froze from the sight that I saw.

And instantly knew Rylan wasn't what I thought he was.

My breath caught in my throat.

There, in the center of the living room, stood Rylan…getting slapped hard. Over and over again by his so-called mother Raine.

His mother’s hand rose again, and again, each slap echoing like gunshots in my ears. He didn’t flinch, He didn’t block her. He just stood there, shoulders still, head bowed slightly. As if he believed he deserved it. Seeing this weakened my spirit.

Then she pushed him with force.

She tried to slap him again, then I moved instantly, and caught her wrist mid-air before she could strike him again.

“Enough!” I snapped.

Rylan straightened up quickly and stepped in front of me, shielding me from her. His hand flew with hurried signs, he was flashing fake smiles at me.

He gave me that look that says, “It’s fine, Aurora. Please… go inside.”

“What?!” My voice broke. “Rylan! Why ar

“My sis here, she’s a weakling!” Orla says with a mocking grin, turning toward her friends. “I can swear she would never do that. This is the same girl that cried over a stray cat dying. She doesn’t have the courage to slap anyone—talk less of beating someone and covering their face. Never. Not Aurora.”She and the girls burst into laughter. Loud and high-pitched, like a chorus of mean girls on stage.Let them keep thinking I’m harmless. Sometimes, that image of me in the Grey house is more useful than a raised voice.Still, a bitter taste builds in my mouth. My throat tightens, but I don’t give them the satisfaction of seeing it.I turn on my heel.“Excuse me,” I say simply, walking away. The moment I step forward, I feel something shift beneath me. My heel catches it….One of the girls had stretched her leg out, perfectly timed and completely deliberate. But I don't know who it was but it was a silver heel. My ankle twists.Everything happened so fast.My arms flail, grasping for

  • Marriage of Deceit   MEAN GIRLS AND FAKE GOOD GIRL

AURORA POVWhen we arrived at the Blackwood mansion, I felt very uneasy. No matter how many times I come here, something about this place makes my stomach twist. Maybe it's the silence behind the wealth. Or maybe it's the people. Or everything about this mansion wasn't right. It was like I shouldn't be here. The front courtyard is busy, decorated subtly with lanterns and fancy light on the flower hedges, glowing. I spot one of the staff waiting by the door. It's the butcher, but tonight he’s dressed neatly in a formal black suit. His usual apron is nowhere in sight, but his familiar grin remains.“Hello, Mrs. Aurora,” he greets me with a warmth that catches me off guard. “Welcome to the family.”I blink for a moment, surprised, then offer a soft nod. “Thank you.”“I am Mr Halden, May I take you to the guest corner?” he asks politely, gesturing ahead with a slight bow.“Yes, thank you,” I replied. He takes the gift box from my hands, tucks it under his arm carefully, and picks up my pu

I turned to her, with a smile. “Ohh!! Since I am ungrateful. Why not keep her at your house? I remembered Dad bought a house for you on your birthday last year. Why not open it for her too since you are so kind to everyone?”She scoffed and went up to me. She is a bit taller than I was because of her heels, so she bent down slightly and whispered to my ears. “Aurora, do you want to disobey your mother? Have you forgotten the feelings of being locked in the freezer room for days?”My leg stiffened on the marble floor as I recalled the memory I had wiped away from my thoughts. Getting looked in the cold room was one of the most cruel things Fiona has ever done to me.I pinched my thighs then forced a smile, “Okay Lizzy, you can stay.”Lizzy stood up and hugged me, “Thank you Aurora.”Rylan stared at me, like he wanted to say something. I know he wasn't happy for another stranger living in his house.“Aurora, I will be leaving with you to the Blackwood mansion. I was also invited to

  • Marriage of Deceit   ORLA'S ENVY

Aurora’s POV – One Week LaterThe stray cats around the area started coming regularly, I always feed them canned food every morning. Since then she kept coming every morning. Seeing them makes me happy, I always felt like they were like me. They had no home and only depended on each other. Giving them a little bit of warmth was what mattered, since I never had a little bit warm- no parents to give me I am like them stranded in a world I never begged to come.I heard heels clicking sounds against the marble floor, it felt familiar. I turned around to see Orla, her eyes scanning the place like she’s trying to spot a flaw. She closes her nose, looking at me like o was filth. She says, looking around. “Tsk!! Tsk!! You carried this dirty habit to this mansion too… Why does Rylan let you run wild?!.” “This is my house now, I can do whatever I wantShe closes her nose, “Let's go in please, I can't breathe here.”I scoffed, “I never told you to come.“You know I am allergic to this animal

  • Marriage of Deceit   LIES MIXED WITH RIGHT REASONS

RYLAN POVTHE way Aurora protected me was very foreign to me. I thought she was weak, but seeing her doing this scared me and also made me happy. Aside from my Aunt Red, no one has ever been so kind to me. Aurora shielded me multiple.times, she looked very pretty, her eyes shining. Her face glittering like gold.I frowned when she said, “What kind of mother are you?!!” She screamed loudly. “Why would you say something so bad to your own child?! Don’t you get it?! Rylan is deaf and mute. And guess what? You’re the one who gave birth to him! It’s not his fault he can’t talk but it’s yours. You did this!” I know she was helping me, but she was also indirectly insulting me. Calling me deaf and mute to my face? I felt like smacking her head. But I can't do anything but watch her protect me. AURORA was really different from.what they said. Why would she protect me if she was on Raine's side? She was really different from.what I heard. I once heard she was lazy and dropped out of school f
