Chapter 10

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity went to Liberty’s place.

She opened the door and went inside the house to find her sister was already up. Liberty was busy in the kitchen.

“Liberty.”

“Seren, you’re here.”

Liberty came out of the kitchen and was happy to see her little sister. “Have you eaten? I’m making a pot of pasta. Do you want a plate?”

“I’m good. I had breakfast. Have you started cooking? You don’t have to if you haven’t because I brought you and Sonny breakfast.”

“Not yet. Sonny had a fever last night. I didn’t sleep much the whole night, so I got up late. Your brother-in-law had to get breakfast from the shop. He wasn’t happy about it. He accused me of doing nothing all day and I could’ve made him breakfast since all I did was look after a child.”

Liberty was hurt.

Serenity was furious for her sake. “Why did Sonny have a fever? You should take him to see a doctor later even if the fever’s gone in case it comes back. Seriously. I can’t believe Hank didn’t bother to help and even yelled at you when Sonny was sick.

“Is Hank still insisting on going Dutch after I moved out, Liberty?”

Liberty took a seat on the sofa and unwrapped the food. She dug in and said, “I’ll take Sonny later. He’s still insisting on splitting the expenses. He said that all I do is spend money rather than earn my keep. He mentioned that I have no idea the pressure he’s under. As part of the family, I should contribute to the household expenses.

“I bet his sister taught him that. My sister-in-law can’t stop poking her face into our affairs after we got married. Hank used to be good to me, and his sister ruined that.”

Prior to handing in her resignation letter, Liberty worked her way up to the financial chief position. She was paid handsomely. Liberty gave up a lot for love and marriage but received hate from her in-laws in return.

Liberty only spent her money on the home. The clothes she bought were with Serenity’s money. The shopping only came once in a while, and buying things like cosmetics were less frequent than new clothes.

However, her in-laws would kick up a fuss about Liberty’s spending whenever she bought new clothes and cosmetics. Even if Liberty explained that it was with Serenity’s money, her in-laws would argue the gifted money was a joint asset with her husband, so she had no right to use it for herself.

“Liberty, why don’t you send Sonny to a kindergarten? You can pick up your career again and earn as much as, if not more than your husband.”

Serenity felt sorry for her sister.

While Serenity was living under the same roof with her sister and family, Serenity would take on all the housework to help her sister out. Now that she had moved out, Liberty got more on her plate.

“Hank said to wait until Sonny is three or four before enrolling him in a kindergarten.” Liberty was interested to return to the workplace. If nothing else, the burden of a car loan, mortgage, and elderly care was weighing heavily on the family.”

Serenity frowned as she sensed that Hank was treating Liberty like cr*p, and it was only getting worse. Serenity had to ask, “Do you think my brother-in-law is seeing someone else?”

Startled, Liberty uttered, “I don’t think so. I know how much he’s making. He doesn’t have extra money to keep a mistress.”

“But he’s been increasingly rude to you. You must think about your future. Don’t be a misunderstood stay-at-home mom without an income.”

Liberty fell silent for a moment before stating, “We’ll see. Don’t worry about me, Seren. I’ll be okay. How are you doing? When is your husband coming back from his trip?”

“It’ll be a while. He can be busy since he’s working in a major corporation.”

Liberty inquired about Serenity’s life at the new home in detail. She was able to relax once she was sure her little sister was doing well.

Now that Serenity had spent some time with her nephew, Liberty urged her to get back to the shop.

While riding her e-bike to the bookshop, Serenity reflected on her sister’s life of endless bickering. Distracted, Serenity failed to pay attention to her surroundings and nearly rammed into a car. With her fight-or-flight instincts kicking in, Serenity swerved to the side and narrowly missed the car. At the same time, she hit the brakes.

The car also came to a screeching halt.

Serenity glanced at the car. It was a Roll Royce, a luxury sedan!

Behind the Rolls Royce was a row of identical vehicles. The people in those cars must be the bodyguards of the person in the luxury sedan.

Since Wiltspoon was a metropolis, luxury sedans were not a rare sight.

Serenity made a gesture of apology to the driver before starting her e-bike and slipping away.

There was no way she was going to wait to be yelled at.

The driver turned his head over to the man in black in the backseat. “Mr. Zachary, it’s the missus.”

Zachary’s face fell as he clearly witnessed Serenity almost knocking onto his car. She was obviously distracted. To have an absent mind while riding on a busy road, was she trying to get herself killed?

The Lang residence was not far from Flemming Group. Under normal traffic conditions, it would take only about ten minutes by car. However, they had left during rush hour, and the traffic was horrible. A journey that should have taken ten minutes ended up taking almost an hour.Whenever Sonny came to Clearfield in the past, it had always been for business. He would arrive, deal with whatever needed handling, and leave as soon as it was done. It was his first time attending a high-society gathering here.He barely knew any of the major business figures in Clearfield. Unless their companies had worked with his, he might have heard some of their names, but he had never met them in person. On the other hand, Everly was a local. She had accompanied Kaden to all sorts of events since she was young and was familiar with practically everyone. When their car entered the Lang estate, Harrison, the butler, was directing traffic and guiding guests into parking spots. Upon seeing Sonny's car lic

Sonny stepped out and opened the car door for Everly, saying, "You're wearing a gown and heels, so don't drive. I'll be your chauffeur tonight."The car he used in Clearfield was provided by the company.Everly said, "I have a driver."However, she still got into Sonny's car.Right as Sonny got in too, she said, "If we don't bring my driver, then one of us can't drink tonight.""I won't drink. I'll drive us. Tonight's banquet was originally an invitation for your family. I'm only filling in for someone else. Not many people know me anyway, so it doesn't matter whether I drink or not."It's only awkward to refuse a drink if it's offered by someone close.”Sonny drove while continuing, "With me around, you don't have to worry. Even if you get drunk, I'll make sure you get home safely."He would be her escort today.Everly smiled. "I don't usually drink much anyway. A few sips at most. No one dares force me to drink. Even if I actually got drunk, no one would dare to do anything

Everly opened the jewelry box and put on the entire set.Once she was ready, she stood in front of the mirror and looked at herself. Despite dressing up, she did not find herself particularly beautiful. She still felt more comfortable in her usual androgynous clothes.Sometimes, she even felt that she lacked femininity.Perhaps there was some truth to what those men claimed when she turned them down. She got to her feet, left the lounge, and walked over to Sonny. "Mr. Brown, I don't look embarrassing, do I? My grandfather picked out this gown for me, but I just don't feel comfortable wearing it."Sonny gave a once-over and complimented her. "Not at all. Seeing you in a dress is quite a pleasant surprise. This look is completely beyond what I imagined.""I rarely wear formal dresses. I'm just used to wearing suits.""Wear them a few more times, and you'll get used to it. You look great. I'm not merely flattering you either. You really are beautiful tonight. I guarantee you'll be

Everly was envious. "I wish I had a younger sibling too. Being an only child comes with a lot of pressure.""That's understandable, but it is what it is. It can't be changed, so all we can do is face it head-on."After a pause, Everly nodded. "That's true."That was why she had not objected when her grandfather told her that she should have two children in the future. She knew how exhausting it was to carry an entire family on her shoulders, and how much pressure it came with. The company she was in charge of was not just for herself or the Flemming family. There were tens of thousands of employees at Flemming Group, along with all the families who depended on those employees. If Flemming Group could not stay afloat, countless employees would lose their jobs, and their families would be thrown into financial hardship. With the current economic climate, finding another job would be extremely difficult. For many people who lost their jobs and eventually found new ones, their new s

There was also a jewelry set.Everly rarely wore accessories. Usually dressed androgynously, she never cared much for jewelry. She would wear earrings at most, but most of the time, she kept things very simple. It was not because she did not own jewelry. In fact, she had plenty. Her grandfather had given her all the precious jewelry passed down through the family. Even her mother did not own as many pieces as she did.Sometimes, her mother would even borrow a couple of sets from her for special occasions.Kaden doted on her. Every year on her birthday without fail, he would give her a piece of jewelry. She owned enough jewelry to rival a jewelry store, and every piece was exquisite. The antique family heirlooms handed down through generations were priceless. Her cousins had always been envious. When Everly was little, they tried to sweet-talk her into giving them several sets, but she refused them every time. They belonged to her, so she would not give them away.Maddie had also

Everly laughed. "In all my life, this is the first time someone has called me beautiful. People would tell me I was cute when I was little, but I always felt they were just saying it to make me feel better."I'll just look like your wallflower standing next to you."She felt that Sonny was better-looking than she was.If Sonny had slightly softer features, people could easily mistake him for a beautiful woman. On the other hand, Everly was the type who could easily be mistaken for a man."Being too handsome as a man isn't necessarily a good thing. It comes with plenty of trouble. Ms. Flemming, I see your secretary. We'll talk when we meet.""Sure."Everly hung up the phone.A few minutes later, Sonny knocked on the door and walked in carrying two bags. One contained Everly's gown, and the other contained a jewelry set to match.Sarah poured Sonny a glass of water and left the office.Sonny placed the two bags on Everly's desk, saying, "Old Mr. Flemming asked me to bring these
