Chapter 10

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity went to Liberty’s place.

She opened the door and went inside the house to find her sister was already up. Liberty was busy in the kitchen.

“Liberty.”

“Seren, you’re here.”

Liberty came out of the kitchen and was happy to see her little sister. “Have you eaten? I’m making a pot of pasta. Do you want a plate?”

“I’m good. I had breakfast. Have you started cooking? You don’t have to if you haven’t because I brought you and Sonny breakfast.”

“Not yet. Sonny had a fever last night. I didn’t sleep much the whole night, so I got up late. Your brother-in-law had to get breakfast from the shop. He wasn’t happy about it. He accused me of doing nothing all day and I could’ve made him breakfast since all I did was look after a child.”

Liberty was hurt.

Serenity was furious for her sake. “Why did Sonny have a fever? You should take him to see a doctor later even if the fever’s gone in case it comes back. Seriously. I can’t believe Hank didn’t bother to help and even yelled at you when Sonny was sick.

“Is Hank still insisting on going Dutch after I moved out, Liberty?”

Liberty took a seat on the sofa and unwrapped the food. She dug in and said, “I’ll take Sonny later. He’s still insisting on splitting the expenses. He said that all I do is spend money rather than earn my keep. He mentioned that I have no idea the pressure he’s under. As part of the family, I should contribute to the household expenses.

“I bet his sister taught him that. My sister-in-law can’t stop poking her face into our affairs after we got married. Hank used to be good to me, and his sister ruined that.”

Prior to handing in her resignation letter, Liberty worked her way up to the financial chief position. She was paid handsomely. Liberty gave up a lot for love and marriage but received hate from her in-laws in return.

Liberty only spent her money on the home. The clothes she bought were with Serenity’s money. The shopping only came once in a while, and buying things like cosmetics were less frequent than new clothes.

However, her in-laws would kick up a fuss about Liberty’s spending whenever she bought new clothes and cosmetics. Even if Liberty explained that it was with Serenity’s money, her in-laws would argue the gifted money was a joint asset with her husband, so she had no right to use it for herself.

“Liberty, why don’t you send Sonny to a kindergarten? You can pick up your career again and earn as much as, if not more than your husband.”

Serenity felt sorry for her sister.

While Serenity was living under the same roof with her sister and family, Serenity would take on all the housework to help her sister out. Now that she had moved out, Liberty got more on her plate.

“Hank said to wait until Sonny is three or four before enrolling him in a kindergarten.” Liberty was interested to return to the workplace. If nothing else, the burden of a car loan, mortgage, and elderly care was weighing heavily on the family.”

Serenity frowned as she sensed that Hank was treating Liberty like cr*p, and it was only getting worse. Serenity had to ask, “Do you think my brother-in-law is seeing someone else?”

Startled, Liberty uttered, “I don’t think so. I know how much he’s making. He doesn’t have extra money to keep a mistress.”

“But he’s been increasingly rude to you. You must think about your future. Don’t be a misunderstood stay-at-home mom without an income.”

Liberty fell silent for a moment before stating, “We’ll see. Don’t worry about me, Seren. I’ll be okay. How are you doing? When is your husband coming back from his trip?”

“It’ll be a while. He can be busy since he’s working in a major corporation.”

Liberty inquired about Serenity’s life at the new home in detail. She was able to relax once she was sure her little sister was doing well.

Now that Serenity had spent some time with her nephew, Liberty urged her to get back to the shop.

While riding her e-bike to the bookshop, Serenity reflected on her sister’s life of endless bickering. Distracted, Serenity failed to pay attention to her surroundings and nearly rammed into a car. With her fight-or-flight instincts kicking in, Serenity swerved to the side and narrowly missed the car. At the same time, she hit the brakes.

The car also came to a screeching halt.

Serenity glanced at the car. It was a Roll Royce, a luxury sedan!

Behind the Rolls Royce was a row of identical vehicles. The people in those cars must be the bodyguards of the person in the luxury sedan.

Since Wiltspoon was a metropolis, luxury sedans were not a rare sight.

Serenity made a gesture of apology to the driver before starting her e-bike and slipping away.

There was no way she was going to wait to be yelled at.

The driver turned his head over to the man in black in the backseat. “Mr. Zachary, it’s the missus.”

Zachary’s face fell as he clearly witnessed Serenity almost knocking onto his car. She was obviously distracted. To have an absent mind while riding on a busy road, was she trying to get herself killed?

“You have a great-granddaughter now, Nana. Since your wish has come true, you should stop badmouthing your grandsons.”Grandma May replied, “I only have one great-granddaughter. I want a few more.”She was greedy for wanting more, even though her wish had been granted. She had more and more wishes. Before Callia was born, the Yorks would have been satisfied with one daughter. Now that Lil’ Pie had changed the fate of the family destined not to have daughters, everyone became greedier. They hoped they could have more girls in the family.Grandma May said, “I can die peacefully if you and your brothers have at least a son and a daughter each.”“What are you talking about, Nana? Don’t speak of death out of the blue.“It’s not that we don’t want to have sons and daughters. We also need luck to be on our side.“Well, since medical technology is so advanced now, we can have as many daughters as we want via IVF.”Grandma May scolded Alex, “Why would you do that? You men will be f

“Lilian has taken on Doc’s responsibilities. She’s much friendlier than he is, and at least she isn’t picky about patients and illnesses. However, she’s still too busy, which makes it difficult for ordinary people to meet her.“There’ll be many chances for you to get to know Lilian in the future. She visits my house from time to time because she’s close to my granddaughters-in-law.“I’ll tell Alex to inform you when she comes over. You can just come over with him.”Sheila thanked Grandma May without giving her words much thought. Despite her sudden request, Grandma May did not dislike her for being abrupt and was even willing to connect her with Lilian. The old lady, rumored to be intimidating, was actually very friendly. She was not as strict as the rumors suggested, but was simply a kind old lady. Sheila had a great impression of Grandma May. Not only was Grandma May willing to introduce her to Dr. Carden, but she also radiated a calm aura. It was easy for Sheila to lower

Grandma May and Alex exchanged glances and understood the meaning behind each other’s gazes. Ten minutes later, she looked around the new house her grandson had bought. As Sheila had mentioned, the house was still messy due to the renovation works. There was nothing much to see, and the design concept was not yet obvious. The effects of the design could only be seen clearly after the renovation and cleaning were done. Next, they all went to Sheila’s house. Upon entering, Grandma May started praising the interior design. She could even shower endless compliments on a sofa. Nevertheless, her words came across as sincere and not just flattery. Sheila went to wash her kettle and boiled some water. “I don’t live here most of the time, so there’s no water.”“It’s okay. We’re not thirsty.”Grandma May smiled. When Sheila was not paying attention, she patted Alex and whispered, “Do you like her?”Alex knew he could not hide the truth from his nana once she was in Westbrook

“I thought since she has experience with renovations and I’d already seen her apartment, I’d ask Dr. Jones to recommend her craftsmen to me. I also asked her to take me to buy materials since she’s experienced.“We just went to look at materials together. I was planning to take Dr. Jones home first before coming back. Oh, her family owns a building on Westbrooke Street. The ground floor is a clinic run by her uncle and aunt.“Though Dr. Jones’s apartment in Westbrooke Gardens has already been renovated, she hasn’t officially moved in yet.”Grandma May smiled warmly and said, “I see, no wonder you looked unfamiliar. So you’re his new neighbor.“Do you live on Westbrooke Street, Dr. Jones?”Sheila smiled and replied, “Yes, my grandparents bought the land and built the house. The whole family used to live there. Later, my father and the others bought other properties, but we still prefer coming back here to live.“There are lots of people. It’s lively, and it’s also the place we've

“In that case, let’s head back to Westbrooke Gardens together.”Since he had already warned her and she still chose to meet Grandma May, then so be it.Sooner or later, the old lady would find out anyway. With how sharp his nana was, he could not keep it from her for long.Case in point, just because he was personally overseeing the renovation, Grandma May had already grown suspicious. Unlike Rowan, who just kept muttering and thinking hard but could not figure it out, genuinely believing Westbrooke Gardens was an exceptionally good property.Sheila smiled. “Your nana probably isn’t as intimidating as you make her out to be. I caught a glimpse of her from afar last time and thought she seemed very kind.”“My nana is very kind, but haven’t you heard that old people are like children? When people get old, they can be just like little kids.”Sheila laughed, “That’s true, too.”As they spoke, they soon arrived at Westbrooke Gardens.Alex spotted two familiar cars. Recognizing the

Lately, that classmate of hers had stopped hovering around her.It was just Kent who still refused to give up and was pestering her relentlessly. When she worked the night shift, every morning, Kent would be waiting at the hospital entrance for her to get off work, wanting to take her out for breakfast. When she switched to the day shift, Kent would still wait for her at the hospital entrance every day, wanting to invite her to see a movie or go shopping with her.She had clearly rejected him several times, but Kent just would not take no for an answer.Kent said he had liked her for years, that he could not let her go, and begged her to give him a chance. She sighed internally. Being liked by someone could sometimes be a real hassle. She truly felt no spark with Kent, and it was not just because she thought his family would be a burden. If she loved Kent, even if his family was troublesome, she could handle it and would not let the Levitts take advantage of her indefinitely.
