Chapter 10

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity went to Liberty’s place.

She opened the door and went inside the house to find her sister was already up. Liberty was busy in the kitchen.

“Liberty.”

“Seren, you’re here.”

Liberty came out of the kitchen and was happy to see her little sister. “Have you eaten? I’m making a pot of pasta. Do you want a plate?”

“I’m good. I had breakfast. Have you started cooking? You don’t have to if you haven’t because I brought you and Sonny breakfast.”

“Not yet. Sonny had a fever last night. I didn’t sleep much the whole night, so I got up late. Your brother-in-law had to get breakfast from the shop. He wasn’t happy about it. He accused me of doing nothing all day and I could’ve made him breakfast since all I did was look after a child.”

Liberty was hurt.

Serenity was furious for her sake. “Why did Sonny have a fever? You should take him to see a doctor later even if the fever’s gone in case it comes back. Seriously. I can’t believe Hank didn’t bother to help and even yelled at you when Sonny was sick.

“Is Hank still insisting on going Dutch after I moved out, Liberty?”

Liberty took a seat on the sofa and unwrapped the food. She dug in and said, “I’ll take Sonny later. He’s still insisting on splitting the expenses. He said that all I do is spend money rather than earn my keep. He mentioned that I have no idea the pressure he’s under. As part of the family, I should contribute to the household expenses.

“I bet his sister taught him that. My sister-in-law can’t stop poking her face into our affairs after we got married. Hank used to be good to me, and his sister ruined that.”

Prior to handing in her resignation letter, Liberty worked her way up to the financial chief position. She was paid handsomely. Liberty gave up a lot for love and marriage but received hate from her in-laws in return.

Liberty only spent her money on the home. The clothes she bought were with Serenity’s money. The shopping only came once in a while, and buying things like cosmetics were less frequent than new clothes.

However, her in-laws would kick up a fuss about Liberty’s spending whenever she bought new clothes and cosmetics. Even if Liberty explained that it was with Serenity’s money, her in-laws would argue the gifted money was a joint asset with her husband, so she had no right to use it for herself.

“Liberty, why don’t you send Sonny to a kindergarten? You can pick up your career again and earn as much as, if not more than your husband.”

Serenity felt sorry for her sister.

While Serenity was living under the same roof with her sister and family, Serenity would take on all the housework to help her sister out. Now that she had moved out, Liberty got more on her plate.

“Hank said to wait until Sonny is three or four before enrolling him in a kindergarten.” Liberty was interested to return to the workplace. If nothing else, the burden of a car loan, mortgage, and elderly care was weighing heavily on the family.”

Serenity frowned as she sensed that Hank was treating Liberty like cr*p, and it was only getting worse. Serenity had to ask, “Do you think my brother-in-law is seeing someone else?”

Startled, Liberty uttered, “I don’t think so. I know how much he’s making. He doesn’t have extra money to keep a mistress.”

“But he’s been increasingly rude to you. You must think about your future. Don’t be a misunderstood stay-at-home mom without an income.”

Liberty fell silent for a moment before stating, “We’ll see. Don’t worry about me, Seren. I’ll be okay. How are you doing? When is your husband coming back from his trip?”

“It’ll be a while. He can be busy since he’s working in a major corporation.”

Liberty inquired about Serenity’s life at the new home in detail. She was able to relax once she was sure her little sister was doing well.

Now that Serenity had spent some time with her nephew, Liberty urged her to get back to the shop.

While riding her e-bike to the bookshop, Serenity reflected on her sister’s life of endless bickering. Distracted, Serenity failed to pay attention to her surroundings and nearly rammed into a car. With her fight-or-flight instincts kicking in, Serenity swerved to the side and narrowly missed the car. At the same time, she hit the brakes.

The car also came to a screeching halt.

Serenity glanced at the car. It was a Roll Royce, a luxury sedan!

Behind the Rolls Royce was a row of identical vehicles. The people in those cars must be the bodyguards of the person in the luxury sedan.

Since Wiltspoon was a metropolis, luxury sedans were not a rare sight.

Serenity made a gesture of apology to the driver before starting her e-bike and slipping away.

There was no way she was going to wait to be yelled at.

The driver turned his head over to the man in black in the backseat. “Mr. Zachary, it’s the missus.”

Zachary’s face fell as he clearly witnessed Serenity almost knocking onto his car. She was obviously distracted. To have an absent mind while riding on a busy road, was she trying to get herself killed?

Marvin said, “Sheila just transferred to Wiltspoon General Hospital. She’s busy and probably doesn’t have time to consider marriage. “Anyway, you still have a chance because she’s single. I support you.”Enid remained silent. Kent had been trying to seek their attention for two years. The young man was okay, but Enid disapproved of his family. Kent was the only successful individual in his family. He had to support his parents, elder brother, and younger sister financially. Marvin was not as attentive as a woman. He simply thought Kent was a fine man. Despite not having a solid family background, Kent was able to establish himself in a big city. He bought a house and a car through his own efforts and even had some savings. With that, he had surpassed many other youngsters. Marvin liked Kent without considering his family background. Although he occasionally heard Kent mention that he had to help his brother and sister, he thought it was normal because he and his siblin

He had fully paid for an apartment in a certain residential complex in Wiltspoon, bought a car worth over thirty thousand bucks in full, and had some savings in the bank. Considering he had started from nothing and worked his way up to having a home, a car, and savings, he had already done quite well.Marvin had quite an appreciation for Kent.It was just that his own niece was rather indifferent to Kent and only treated him as a school friend, so Marvin did not feel it was his place to say much.Sheila respected him very much, but he was, after all, just an uncle. Her parents, elder brother, and sister-in-law were still around, so it was not his place as an uncle to make decisions for his niece.“Sheila.”Encouraged by Marvin’s look, Kent walked over to stand opposite Sheila and handed her the bouquet of red roses.“Sheila, I like you.”Kent mustered his courage and spoke his feelings for Sheila out loud.Sheila did not accept the flowers. She apologetically said, “I’m sorry,

“You can take that invitation back. I won’t be attending Ms. Marshall’s birthday banquet.”Kevin picked up the invitation and said, “In your condition, it really isn’t convenient for you to go. Then I’ll take it to Rowan and have him make an appearance. As long as the Marshalls know our family has a representative attending, it’ll be fine.”Alex nodded repeatedly.Rowan did not have a love interest yet, so it was most suitable for him to go.Though Rowan was a bit younger than Ms. Marshall, it was only by a year, so it was not a big deal if the woman was older. If Rowan knew what Alex and Kevin were thinking, he would protest that he was not interested in older women! His older brothers were too sneaky. They did not want to attend Ms. Marshall’s birthday banquet, so they pushed it onto him. They were basically bullying him for being the youngest! After the brothers chatted for a while longer, Kevin left.Meanwhile, at the Joneses' residence...The family lived in a five-story s

“Dr. Jones’s family isn’t bad either. They’re a family of doctors. Her parents and grandparents are quite renowned in the medical field. You could say our families are well-matched, too.” Now that Alex had set his sights on Sheila, he praised her highly in every way.The Jones family’s wealth and status were naturally not comparable to the Yorks’, but if Alex liked her, they were still a good match.Kevin said with amusement, “The problem is, you aren’t even brave enough to confess your feelings right now. When will you be able to win her over? “Besides, she already has two admirers, one of whom works at this same hospital, while the other runs his own clinic. Both are her colleagues, and they’re also all alumni of the same school. One’s a senior, and the other’s a classmate.”If you compared Sheila to the women of the York family, she could only be considered plain, not a beauty. By ordinary standards, though, she was quite pretty.Plus, her family background was very attracti

Alex hurriedly asked, “You didn’t tell Nana, did you? My injuries are almost healed, and it’s nothing serious. Don’t let Nana know.”“So you do know your injuries are almost healed,” Kevin teased. “Yet you’re still loitering in the hospital, refusing to be discharged. Your attending physician must be inwardly criticizing you.“Of course, we wouldn’t tell Nana. When Nana asked about you, Zack said you were on a business trip out of town and wouldn’t be back soon. He said you might be gone for half a month, or possibly one or two months, and that the timing was uncertain.“Nana also grumbled that you didn’t even tell her you were going on a business trip, and you haven’t made a video call to her in so long. She misses you.”That was how Grandma May was. If any of her grandsons had not returned home for a while or had not called her, she would still remember them and ask about them from time to time. They were all children she watched grow up. No matter how old her grandsons became,

Alex said, “Don’t bring any. I’m already drinking some iron-replenishing soup every day.”He glanced at Stanley.Prepared by Stanley, two out of his three daily meals included soup. After drinking it for so many days, he was starting to get tired of it.“You know, you guys can just come empty-handed. There’s no need to bring anything. I’m not lacking anything here.”“How could we visit a patient in the hospital empty-handed? Buying a fruit basket is only proper.”Alex was speechless.Kevin pulled over a chair and sat down by his brother’s bed.Stanley poured a cup of water for Kevin and then left the room, giving the brothers space to discuss topics he should not overhear.“Has Hayden returned to Jensburg?” Alex asked.“Yes, she’s gone back. There’s a lot going on at the company. She can’t be away for too many days.”Alex chuckled, “Hayden probably couldn’t wait to get back to Jensburg. During summer vacation, it’s rare for you guys to have time without the kids.”Kevin and
