Chapter 10

Author: Gu Lingfei
Serenity went to Liberty’s place.

She opened the door and went inside the house to find her sister was already up. Liberty was busy in the kitchen.

“Liberty.”

“Seren, you’re here.”

Liberty came out of the kitchen and was happy to see her little sister. “Have you eaten? I’m making a pot of pasta. Do you want a plate?”

“I’m good. I had breakfast. Have you started cooking? You don’t have to if you haven’t because I brought you and Sonny breakfast.”

“Not yet. Sonny had a fever last night. I didn’t sleep much the whole night, so I got up late. Your brother-in-law had to get breakfast from the shop. He wasn’t happy about it. He accused me of doing nothing all day and I could’ve made him breakfast since all I did was look after a child.”

Liberty was hurt.

Serenity was furious for her sake. “Why did Sonny have a fever? You should take him to see a doctor later even if the fever’s gone in case it comes back. Seriously. I can’t believe Hank didn’t bother to help and even yelled at you when Sonny was sick.

“Is Hank still insisting on going Dutch after I moved out, Liberty?”

Liberty took a seat on the sofa and unwrapped the food. She dug in and said, “I’ll take Sonny later. He’s still insisting on splitting the expenses. He said that all I do is spend money rather than earn my keep. He mentioned that I have no idea the pressure he’s under. As part of the family, I should contribute to the household expenses.

“I bet his sister taught him that. My sister-in-law can’t stop poking her face into our affairs after we got married. Hank used to be good to me, and his sister ruined that.”

Prior to handing in her resignation letter, Liberty worked her way up to the financial chief position. She was paid handsomely. Liberty gave up a lot for love and marriage but received hate from her in-laws in return.

Liberty only spent her money on the home. The clothes she bought were with Serenity’s money. The shopping only came once in a while, and buying things like cosmetics were less frequent than new clothes.

However, her in-laws would kick up a fuss about Liberty’s spending whenever she bought new clothes and cosmetics. Even if Liberty explained that it was with Serenity’s money, her in-laws would argue the gifted money was a joint asset with her husband, so she had no right to use it for herself.

“Liberty, why don’t you send Sonny to a kindergarten? You can pick up your career again and earn as much as, if not more than your husband.”

Serenity felt sorry for her sister.

While Serenity was living under the same roof with her sister and family, Serenity would take on all the housework to help her sister out. Now that she had moved out, Liberty got more on her plate.

“Hank said to wait until Sonny is three or four before enrolling him in a kindergarten.” Liberty was interested to return to the workplace. If nothing else, the burden of a car loan, mortgage, and elderly care was weighing heavily on the family.”

Serenity frowned as she sensed that Hank was treating Liberty like cr*p, and it was only getting worse. Serenity had to ask, “Do you think my brother-in-law is seeing someone else?”

Startled, Liberty uttered, “I don’t think so. I know how much he’s making. He doesn’t have extra money to keep a mistress.”

“But he’s been increasingly rude to you. You must think about your future. Don’t be a misunderstood stay-at-home mom without an income.”

Liberty fell silent for a moment before stating, “We’ll see. Don’t worry about me, Seren. I’ll be okay. How are you doing? When is your husband coming back from his trip?”

“It’ll be a while. He can be busy since he’s working in a major corporation.”

Liberty inquired about Serenity’s life at the new home in detail. She was able to relax once she was sure her little sister was doing well.

Now that Serenity had spent some time with her nephew, Liberty urged her to get back to the shop.

While riding her e-bike to the bookshop, Serenity reflected on her sister’s life of endless bickering. Distracted, Serenity failed to pay attention to her surroundings and nearly rammed into a car. With her fight-or-flight instincts kicking in, Serenity swerved to the side and narrowly missed the car. At the same time, she hit the brakes.

The car also came to a screeching halt.

Serenity glanced at the car. It was a Roll Royce, a luxury sedan!

Behind the Rolls Royce was a row of identical vehicles. The people in those cars must be the bodyguards of the person in the luxury sedan.

Since Wiltspoon was a metropolis, luxury sedans were not a rare sight.

Serenity made a gesture of apology to the driver before starting her e-bike and slipping away.

There was no way she was going to wait to be yelled at.

The driver turned his head over to the man in black in the backseat. “Mr. Zachary, it’s the missus.”

Zachary’s face fell as he clearly witnessed Serenity almost knocking onto his car. She was obviously distracted. To have an absent mind while riding on a busy road, was she trying to get herself killed?

Sheila went to her room as soon as she got upstairs. Before she could close the door, Enid knocked on it. When Sheila saw her aunt, she asked, “Why haven’t you gone to bed, Aunt Enid?”“How can I fall asleep when you aren’t home yet? Your uncle and I are your guardians while your parents aren’t around. We can’t sleep when you’re still outside.”Enid entered the room with a smile and sat beside Sheila. She asked, “How was the movie?”“It was great.”“Did you come back right after watching the movie?”“Yeah. It was already ten o’clock when we exited the cinema. Since Alex and I have to work tomorrow, we decided to head home to rest. That way, we’ll be in good spirits while working tomorrow.“Alex had suggested grabbing a late-night snack, but I rejected him because I don’t eat late-night snacks unless I’m on night shifts.”Enid nodded. She knew her niece was strict about her diet.“Alex must’ve brought you back. Why didn’t you invite him in for a cup of tea?”“Look at the time.

“Your sisters didn't get married to doctors themselves. Their husbands have different jobs.“Sheila's partner can have any profession, so long as she likes him.”Enid added, “Anyway, I think Alex has a good chance. You should stop helping Kent secretly. Sheila doesn't even like him.”Marvin said, “I didn't help Kent that much. He does have some talent when it comes to wooing ladies. I only gave him some advice whenever he had questions. Having done it for two years, he feels like a student to me.“I can't do anything if Sheila doesn't like him. In my opinion, her ex-boyfriend, who left her for someone of a higher status, hurt her too deeply. That's why she hasn't dared to start a new relationship.“Sheila's feelings take priority. If she really likes Alex, that's fine too. It's better than her staying single for the rest of her life.”Marvin cared a lot about his niece. He was worried that she would not dare to get married after getting hurt in her previous relationship.Sheila

“Your family should have a family doctor, right?”Sheila heard that wealthy families would hire a family doctor, who would handle most minor illnesses, so there was no need to go to the hospital. If wealthy people had to visit the hospital, it would mean they had a serious health issue.“Yes, but I trust your skills more.”Sheila smiled. “You’re overestimating me. I’m a young doctor who hasn’t yet gained the trust of many patients. Usually, patients only come to see me for consultations when I’m on duty, as other doctors have their hands full.“They only come to me because they’re in a hurry.”However, things had gotten better. Sheila was truly talented and had grown up among doctors. She had heard and seen many things since she was young, and had experience assessing patients before she even graduated. Sometimes, she would attend to patients at her family clinic when Marvin was not around.Patients who consulted her later realized she was thorough and prescribed the correct m

Mary learned medicine. She was aware of that fact. It was also confirmed at that moment. In the end, she gave up, but did not leave, instead choosing to lie on the bed with Kent fully clothed. She wondered how he would react when he woke up the next day.On the other hand, Sheila was unaware of what was happening. She simply knew Mary would look after Kent and take him home. It was already ten at night by the time she and Alex exited the cinema after watching a movie. He suggested going for a late-night snack, but she rejected the idea.“I don’t eat late-night snacks unless I’m on night shifts. I don’t want to gain weight.”Alex smiled. “I don’t eat late-night snacks often either. When there are events, I’ll only drink a glass or two of wine and not eat much.“You must be very disciplined in terms of your lifestyle, Dr. Jones.”Sheila was still thinking about the movie’s contents. As she walked, she replied, “I guess so. After all, I’m a doctor who knows how one’s lifestyle

The master bedroom had the largest area out of the entire unit. The interior design of Kent’s room was simple but elegant. However, upon entering the room, Mary spotted a wall filled with Sheila’s photographs. Those pictures were enlarged and pasted on the wall. There were pictures from Sheila’s younger and recent days. Needless to say, Kent had secretly taken pictures of Sheila and developed them to be pasted in his room. Looking at the wall filled with Sheila’s pictures, Mary was depressed. It was a hard blow. She moved Kent to his bed but lost her strength at the last moment. Her grip loosened, and he fell onto the bed.“Do you love Dr. Jones that much? I can’t believe you took so many pictures of her and even printed them out to be stuck on your walls,” said Mary bitterly. There was also a group photo on the bedside table. The people in the pictures were most likely Kent and Sheila’s coursemates. He stood pretty close to Sheila, with only one person in between them. With ho

It was silent inside the car. Kent started snoring. He had fallen asleep. It was easier to fall asleep when one was drunk.Mary turned up the heater, worried Kent would catch a cold.Did he understand their conversation properly?Mary hoped he could let go of his feelings for Sheila. Sheila would never accept him. She already had another person by her side. Although Mary had never met Alex York, she knew he was a handsome man from Kent’s words. Kent still did not know much about Alex’s family background, but all the shop lots along Westbrooke Street belonged to his cousin’s wife.Kent kept saying that Alex was a useless man who mooched off his cousin and his cousin’s wife, and that he was scamming many girls with his good looks. He also said Sheila would be deceived by Alex’s handsome face.Kent complained that he could not win Enid’s favor despite having gone to the Joneses’ clinic every day, yet Enid was on Alex’s side as soon as she met him.He blamed women for being ob
