Chapter 11

Author: Gu Lingfei
“Let’s go.”

Despite tearing into Serenity in his mind, Zachary had no intention to say or do anything about it.

Serenity was his wife on paper, but they were no different than strangers.

Too scared to say anything, the driver started the car.

Serenity had no idea she nearly ran into her man’s car. She sped off on her e-bike and made it to the shop in no time. Jasmine always arrived earlier than Serenity since the former lived nearby.

“Seren.”

Jasmine ordered breakfast after she was done setting up the shop. She was enjoying breakfast when her best friend entered the scene. Jasmine asked with a smile, “Have you eaten?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh.” Jasmine went on to finish the most important meal of the day.

“I brought you some desserts. They’re delicious. Try them,” Jasmine told her best friend while putting down her bag by the cash register.

Serenity placed her bike keys by the cash register and sat down before pulling over the bag containing the dessert. “You can’t go wrong with desserts. I saw a Rolls-Royce on my way to work, Jasmine.”

Jasmine replied, “I see. It’s not strange to spot a Rolls-Royce in Wiltspoon, but it’s not a common sight. Did you see who’s in the car? Is it just like in the books—a hot and single CEO?”

Serenity stared at Jasmine without a word.

Jasmine chuckled. “That’s what it’s like in the books. Why are the young, hot, and rich CEOs eluding us?”

“The storylines are made up to cater to the market. Would anyone read a book if it’s about your average wage earner? The leading man has to be society’s elite even if he isn’t a CEO.”

Jasmine burst into another bout of laughter.

“That reminds me. Are you free tonight, Seren?”

“You know I’m either at home or at the shop, right? What’s the matter?”

Life was simple to Serenity as it only revolved around managing the shop and caring for her sister’s son.

“There’s a dinner party tonight. It’s a gathering of high society. I got an invitation. Do you want to come along and have a peek into their world?”

Serenity turned down the offer. “I don’t run in the same circle as them. I’m not interested.”

Although she earned quite a bit, the upper crust was beyond her reach. She had no intention to elbow her way into the community, nor did she have the means to.

To be frank, Serenity might be mistaken as the server if someone of her social status were to attend such a refined dinner party.

“I don’t want to go either, but my mom begged my aunt for an invite. I can bring a plus one, so I thought of taking you. Seren, oh Seren. Please come with me to see what it’s like. Wait, no. I need you there to be my rock. I don’t want my mom to nag at me.”

The Soxes were wealthy and locals of Wiltspoon. They owned several properties and half a block of stores, making their tens of millions through rent. However, wealth could not buy social standing.

Mrs. Sox took pride in her daughter’s pretty face as marrying her off could be the ticket to a higher social class. Jasmine’s aunt happened to marry into a rich and powerful family. It had been a few tough decades, but it finally worked out for the aunt as she was now rubbing shoulders with the upper class.

The aunt doted on Jasmine and believed her niece had just only what it took to bag a wealthy and influential bachelor. Since Jasmine’s mom asked, the aunt was happy to make it happen for Jasmine.

“Is Mrs. Sox pressuring you to get married again?”

“All mothers are the same. They can’t wait to kick their daughters out and make them another man’s problem once their daughters turn eighteen. I can make my own money and be financially independent. I don’t need a man to enjoy a good life.

“I think you shouldn’t marry out of your social class. I don’t want to marry up. Although my aunt is mingling well with the circle, it took her decades to get there. She faced a lot of difficulties when she first married her husband. She used to cry to my mom when she visited back then. She knows what it’s like.”

Jasmine was all for freedom and not being bound by the upper crust’s unwritten rules.

“Come on, Seren. Just tonight. We’ll be in this together. We get to see how the top 1% live. My aunt said there will be a lot of young eligible bachelors attending tonight. They’re all Wiltspoon’s finest and richest. We can check the scene out even if we’re not there to snag a man. It’s a dinner party, so there’s going to be lots of good food.”

Serenity was not one to say no to food.

So was Jasmine.

It was that common interest that brought the pair together.

It took an hour of convincing before Serenity gave in to her best friend’s request. They closed the store early to attend the event.

Serenity called Liberty and asked about Sonny. He had seen a doctor, and the fever was only a case of the sniffles.

It put Serenity’s mind at ease.

She then told Liberty about attending a dinner party with Jasmine.

“It’s nice even if it’s just for the experience. Of course, you could make some friends from that circle.”

Liberty was in favor of Serenity attending the party.

It was not for any other reason than to witness the other side of the world.

The shop was closed right after lunch just to attend tonight’s party. Jasmine dragged her best friend home to put on some fancy dress and slap some makeup on.

Since the Soxes adored Serenity, they had no problem with Jasmine bringing Serenity along to the dinner party. Serenity was married anyway, so there was no concern that Serenity would steal the limelight from Jasmine.

Just after six in the evening, a sedan arranged by Jasmine’s aunt rolled into the Soxes’ driveway.

“Have fun.”

Seeing the girls off at the door, Mrs. Sox said to Serenity, “Help me keep an eye on Jasmine, Seren. Don’t let her stuff her face. Get her to socialize with the young bachelors.”

She told her daughter, “Jasmine, your aunt has done a lot for you. Don’t let her down.”

Serenity replied with a smile, “Don’t worry, Mrs. Sox. I’ll help you keep an eye on Jasmine so she doesn’t wander off to the buffet.”

They would hang out at the buffet together.

“I feel relieved with you around.”

Mrs. Sox was fond of Serenity because the girl was sensible and independent. Had it not been because her son was a lot younger than Serenity, Mrs. Sox would have played matchmaker for them.

It was regrettable that Serenity was taken. There were a lot of youngsters in the Sox family. Serenity could have picked any one of them if she wanted to walk down the aisle.

It was what it was. There was no point talking about it since it was not like Mrs. Sox’s regret could change anything.

With Mrs. Sox urging them to hurry up, Jasmine, dolled up in glamorous makeup, white gown, and jewelry, dragged her best friend into the sedan arranged by the aunt.

Seeing that Serenity was married and acting as a plus-one, she did not bother to dress up. She wore her usual clothes and put on natural makeup. Nevertheless, her natural beauty still shone through despite her plain attire.

Mary learned medicine. She was aware of that fact. It was also confirmed at that moment. In the end, she gave up, but did not leave, instead choosing to lie on the bed with Kent fully clothed. She wondered how he would react when he woke up the next day.On the other hand, Sheila was unaware of what was happening. She simply knew Mary would look after Kent and take him home. It was already ten at night by the time she and Alex exited the cinema after watching a movie. He suggested going for a late-night snack, but she rejected the idea.“I don’t eat late-night snacks unless I’m on night shifts. I don’t want to gain weight.”Alex smiled. “I don’t eat late-night snacks often either. When there are events, I’ll only drink a glass or two of wine and not eat much.“You must be very disciplined in terms of your lifestyle, Dr. Jones.”Sheila was still thinking about the movie’s contents. As she walked, she replied, “I guess so. After all, I’m a doctor who knows how one’s lifestyle

The master bedroom had the largest area out of the entire unit. The interior design of Kent’s room was simple but elegant. However, upon entering the room, Mary spotted a wall filled with Sheila’s photographs. Those pictures were enlarged and pasted on the wall. There were pictures from Sheila’s younger and recent days. Needless to say, Kent had secretly taken pictures of Sheila and developed them to be pasted in his room. Looking at the wall filled with Sheila’s pictures, Mary was depressed. It was a hard blow. She moved Kent to his bed but lost her strength at the last moment. Her grip loosened, and he fell onto the bed.“Do you love Dr. Jones that much? I can’t believe you took so many pictures of her and even printed them out to be stuck on your walls,” said Mary bitterly. There was also a group photo on the bedside table. The people in the pictures were most likely Kent and Sheila’s coursemates. He stood pretty close to Sheila, with only one person in between them. With ho

It was silent inside the car. Kent started snoring. He had fallen asleep. It was easier to fall asleep when one was drunk.Mary turned up the heater, worried Kent would catch a cold.Did he understand their conversation properly?Mary hoped he could let go of his feelings for Sheila. Sheila would never accept him. She already had another person by her side. Although Mary had never met Alex York, she knew he was a handsome man from Kent’s words. Kent still did not know much about Alex’s family background, but all the shop lots along Westbrooke Street belonged to his cousin’s wife.Kent kept saying that Alex was a useless man who mooched off his cousin and his cousin’s wife, and that he was scamming many girls with his good looks. He also said Sheila would be deceived by Alex’s handsome face.Kent complained that he could not win Enid’s favor despite having gone to the Joneses’ clinic every day, yet Enid was on Alex’s side as soon as she met him.He blamed women for being ob

“Do you get tired? Don’t you feel annoyed? I think you must be, because you can’t stand me helping my family.“It’s just that you can’t fight back. You keep compromising and tolerating your relatives because of your vanity. You want everyone to know how capable you are and let your parents brag about you back home.“I’m not scared to say that we’re in the same boat. That’s why we’re more suitable for each other. Dr. Jones has a great family. All of them are successful, so she doesn’t need to help them financially like us.“She’ll never tolerate our actions. Once or twice might be fine, but not countless times.“Getting a partner who’s equal in social status isn’t just a saying. It’s really important. I know you really like Dr. Jones, but I believe there are selfish reasons behind it too. You’re thinking that you can have her arrange your relatives’ medical appointments after you marry her. You can also find better doctors to treat your relatives and friends, which will reflect your

Kent leaned against the car and observed Mary’s side profile. She was not as beautiful as Sheila, but she was not ugly either. In terms of look, he and Mary did make a good pair.“Live for yourself from now on, Mary. Save up your salary. You’re not that young anymore. Life after marriage will be difficult if you don’t have some money saved up.“Providing for your adoptive parents is acceptable, but your brothers aren’t your responsibility. You don’t have to care about them.”Mary glanced at him, then stared at her car blankly without saying a word. Kent continued giving her a lecture on life.“You don’t even earn much every month. You refuse to spend too much on yourself, even though you’ve worked tirelessly, yet you’ll transfer all your money to your mom as soon as she calls. You even borrowed some money from your colleagues or me when you’re short.“I think you can give your family a few hundred dollars when they need it. However, you should tell them you don’t have enough mo

Kent despised Mary’s family, yet he had forgotten that his family was in the same situation. As Mary had mentioned, they were more suited for each other.“This is annoying.”Kent let out a self-deprecating laugh. He grabbed the bottle and filled his glass with more alcohol. He asked Mary, “Do you want some? I can continue drinking. Why don’t we drink together till we’re drunk?“I can give you a day off tomorrow if you don’t think you can work.”Mary said, “You’re already drunk, Dr. Levitt. “I can’t drink alcohol. We won’t be able to go home if I do. I need to drive.”After Kent emptied one glass, Mary snatched his glass and said, “Stop drinking. Let’s go.”She stood and pulled Kent to help him get up.Although Kent put up slight resistance, he still let Mary lead him outside. Before they reached the door, Kent suddenly felt his stomach churn. He got nauseous and wanted to puke.Unable to hold it in, he immediately covered his mouth and ran toward the bathroom. It was a bar
