Alex

I knew Nina would hate me.

I expected it.

What I didn’t expect was how quickly seeing her again would make me forget every reason I had spent three years avoiding her.

I stood at the bottom of the staircase, watching her beside her mother.

She looked exactly like I remembered.

No.

That was a lie.

She looked better.

Much better.

Her hair was pulled away from her face, exposing the delicate line of her neck. She wore a simple dress that somehow made her look more dangerous than any woman covered in diamonds ever could.

And those eyes.

Those same eyes that had challenged me since we were children.

They found mine.

For a second, everything else disappeared.

Then she lifted her chin.

“Alex.”

There it was.

That voice.

Still capable of irritating me with one word.

I walked toward her.

She didn’t move.

Good.

I stopped in front of her.

“You look exactly as I remember.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Disappointed?”

I almost smiled.

Still difficult.

“Still difficult.”

“Still arrogant.”

“Still angry.”

“Still unbearable.”

I couldn’t stop the small smile that touched my mouth.

“Good.”

She frowned.

“Good?”

I wanted to tell her the truth.

That I had missed this.

Missed arguing with her.

Missed the way she looked at me like she was the only person in the world who wasn’t afraid of me.

But I couldn’t.

Not yet.

“At least neither of us has changed.”

Her eyes remained locked on mine.

I stepped closer.

I watched her breathing change.

She tried to hide it.

She always did.

“Because we’re getting married, Nina.”

She swallowed.

“I know.”

There was anger in her voice.

Fear, too.

I hated knowing that I was the reason for it.

But there were things she didn’t understand.

Things I couldn’t tell her.

Not yet.

“And I have no intention of making this easy for you.”

Her lips curved into a sweet smile.

“Neither do I.”

There she was.

The Nina I remembered.

The girl who had once thrown a glass of orange juice at my shirt because I’d beaten her in an argument.

The woman standing in front of me was far more beautiful.

And far more dangerous.

She stepped back.

I wanted to stop her.

I didn’t.

Instead, I watched her carefully.

“What?” she asked.

“Nothing.”

“You’re staring.”

“I’m looking at my future wife.”

Her expression immediately hardened.

“Don’t call me that.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“You’d prefer something else?”

“I’d prefer you keep your distance.”

I glanced between us.

“I’m standing perfectly still.”

“Then stand somewhere else.”

A laugh escaped me.

I hadn’t intended to laugh.

But she still had that effect on me.

She folded her arms.

“Let’s make something clear, Alex. This marriage may be happening, but that doesn’t mean you own me.”

My smile disappeared.

“I know.”

“I will not follow your rules.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“I won’t pretend to love you.”

“I don’t want you to.”

“And I certainly won’t share a bedroom with you.”

That caught me off guard.

I looked at her.

She was serious.

Completely serious.

And somehow that made me want to tease her.

“That last one,” I said quietly, “might become complicated.”

Her eyes widened slightly.

“Not a chance.”

I smiled.

“We’ll see.”

She glared at me.

I almost wanted to keep pushing.

Almost.

But there was something else I needed her to understand.

She had been given only half the truth.

So I turned toward the staircase.

I took a few steps before stopping.

“Oh, Nina?”

“What?”

“You should read the contract again.”

Her expression changed.

“What contract?”

I looked over my shoulder.

“The marriage contract.”

Silence.

“You’ve only read the part your father showed you.”

Her face paled.

“What are you talking about?”

I held her gaze.

She deserved the truth.

Just not tonight.

“You’ll find out soon enough.”

I walked upstairs.

With every step, I felt her eyes following me.

I hated myself for what I was about to do.

But I had made a promise.

Not to my father.

Not to hers.

To myself.

I would protect her, even if she hated me for it.

Especially if she hated me for it.

Because Nina didn’t know the real reason I had agreed to this marriage.

She thought I was doing it for money.

She thought I wanted control.

She thought I was her worst enemy.

Let her think that.

For now.

Because if Nina ever discovered the truth about why I chose her…

I wasn’t sure she’d ever forgive me.

And I wasn’t sure I could survive losing her twice.

NinaThree months ago, I had stood in this same mirror and wondered how my life had gone so wrong.Today, I was staring at a woman dressed in white. My wedding dress. My wedding. His wedding.Alex’s.I swallowed hard.“You look beautiful.”Kimora’s voice came from behind me.I looked at her through the mirror. She was standing there with her arms folded, her expression unusually soft.“Beautiful enough to marry my worst enemy?”She smiled.“Unfortunately, yes.”I laughed despite myself. For a few seconds, everything felt normal. Then my eyes dropped to the ring on my finger. The diamond caught the light.Alex had placed it there weeks ago, but somehow it felt different today.Permanent.Real.Terrifying.I wasn’t marrying him because I hated him anymore. That was the problem.I wasn’t sure what I felt for him now.I thought about the way he looked at me when he thought I wasn’t watching. The way he’d touched my face. The way he’d kissed me.The way he’d told me he’d loved me since we

AlexSomeone she knew. Those three words had been sitting between us like a loaded gun.Nina stared at me.“Who?”I didn’t answer immediately. Not because I didn’t know.Because I did.And I wasn’t ready to tell her.“Alex.”I stepped closer.“There’s something I need you to understand.”Her expression hardened.“If you’re about to tell me to trust you without explaining anything, don’t.”I almost smiled.Still Nina.Still challenging me even when she was afraid.“You’re right.”She blinked.“I am?”“Yes.”I took a breath.“You deserve answers.”“Then give me some.”“I will.”“When?”“Soon.”She groaned.“That’s not an answer.”“I know.”I reached for her hand. She let me take it.That small gesture affected me more than it should have.Especially after what had happened between us.The kiss.I could still feel her lips against mine. And now that I’d finally had her, I wanted more.Much more. That was precisely why I needed distance.Because I knew myself.Once I allowed myself to hav

The KissNinaI couldn’t breathe. Not properly.I was staring at Alex, but my mind was stuck on the words he’d just said.Because I’m hiding it because I love you.He loved me.Alex Sterling loved me.The man who had spent years arguing with me.The man who had looked at me like I was the most irritating person he’d ever met.The man I had convinced myself couldn’t stand me.Loved me.“You…”My voice barely came out.Alex’s expression changed. He looked almost frightened. Not of me.Of what he’d just admitted.“Nina.”“You love me?”He closed his eyes briefly.“I shouldn’t have said that.”“No.”I stepped closer.“You don’t get to say something like that and then walk away.”“I wasn’t going to.”“Then tell me.”His emerald eyes met mine.“I’ve loved you since we were nineteen.”Everything inside me went still.“Nineteen?”He nodded.“All this time?”“Yes.”I shook my head.“But you hated me.”“I never hated you.”“You made me believe you did.”“I know.”“Why?”His jaw tightened.“Beca

AlexI woke up the next morning knowing I had made a mistake. Not because I had almost kissed Nina. That part wasn’t the mistake. The mistake was letting her see me.Not Alex Sterling—the billionaire, the businessman, the man who never loses control.Just me.The man who had loved her for thirteen years.I stood in front of the mirror, fastening the buttons of my shirt.Three years.Three years of keeping my distance.Three years of convincing myself that staying away from Nina was the only way to keep her safe. And now she was sleeping under my roof.I was losing the control I’d spent years building. My phone rang.Lucian.I answered.“Tell me.”His voice was serious.“We have a problem.”I walked toward my desk.“What happened?”“The security team found something.”My stomach tightened.“What?”“A vehicle has been watching the penthouse.”I went completely still.“How long?”“Three nights.”Three nights.Since Nina moved in.“Do we know who?”“Not yet.”I grabbed my jacket.“Keep th

NinaI couldn’t sleep.Which was ridiculous. It was almost two in the morning, and I had been staring at the ceiling for what felt like hours. All I could think about was Alex.More specifically—His lips. The way he had looked at me on the balcony. The way he’d admitted that if I hadn’t told him not to kiss me, he would have.I rolled onto my side.“This is a disaster.”I hated him.I had to remember that.He was arrogant.Controlling.Infuriating.And he was the reason I was living in a penthouse I hadn’t chosen, preparing for a marriage I hadn’t asked for.So why did my heart beat faster whenever he got close?I threw the blanket off and got out of bed.I needed water.Maybe that would clear my head. The penthouse was completely silent when I walked downstairs.Except for the soft sound of music.I followed it.The lights in the living room were dim.Alex stood by the windows. He was wearing black sweatpants and a plain white T-shirt.No suit.No expensive watch. No perfectly style

AlexI knew Nina was jealous. She thought she was hiding it.She wasn’t.The moment Victoria touched my arm, Nina’s entire expression changed. It should have amused me.Instead, I found myself wondering whether she cared. And that was dangerous.Because I had spent years convincing myself that wanting her was something I could control.Living with her was making that lie harder to maintain.I watched her from across the room as she spoke with Kimora. She looked beautiful. Not because she was dressed for attention.Because she wasn’t trying. That was always the problem with Nina. She never needed to try.She caught me staring.“What?”“Nothing.”“You’re staring.”“I was thinking.”“About?”I walked toward her.“You.”Her eyes widened slightly.“I doubt that.”“You shouldn’t.”She crossed her arms.“Was that woman your girlfriend?”“No.”“Ex?”“No.”“Someone you’re sleeping with?”My eyebrow lifted.“Are you asking because you care?”“No.”“Then why are you asking?”She opened her mouth
