Cleo

The rest of dinner continued with more conversation than I expected. We talked about random things and basically got to know each other a little more.

After dessert, we left the restaurant. Xavier dropped me off at my apartment and left.

By the next morning, pictures of us were everywhere. I had expected it. Still, seeing my face beside his on gossip blogs felt strangely surreal.

Lexi called first.

Then Amaya.

Then my mother.

I gave all three of them the same explanation: Xavier and I were

Cleo “Nothing. It’s just amazing how you can sit there and say something like that without even thinking about how I might feel.”His expression hardened slightly, his jaw tightening. “Cleo, I don’t understand what you’re trying to get at right now.”“Of course you don’t.” I shook my head, tearing my eyes away from him for a second before snapping them right back. “I had to sit in front of my parents and convince them that I am desperately in love with you. I had to tell them that I’m happy, that I know exactly what I’m doing, and that marrying you is what I want more than anything.” I paused, my throat tightening so severely it ached.Xavier remained completely silent.I waited for him to say something. Anything. But he only stared back at me, his expression entirely unreadable.“I had to lie straight to the faces of two people I love so much,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Do you have any idea how that felt?”“Cleo, you knew exactly what this arrangement involved when you agre

  • Married to my Ex’s Brother   CHAPTER 33

CleoI returned to my office and finished reviewing the stack of files I had left on my desk. By the time I was done, the building had grown entirely quiet. I packed my things, switched off my computer, and was just about to leave when my phone vibrated in my hand.Xavier’s name appeared across the screen.Xavier: Are you still at the office?I frowned slightly at the screen.Me: I’m about to leave. Why?His reply came a few seconds later.Xavier: I’m taking you out for dinner tonight.I stared at the glowing text, a prickle of irritation washing over me. He hadn’t asked whether I was free, or whether I even wanted to go. He had simply informed me of his plans.Typical Xavier.Me: And what if I don’t want to go?Xavier: I’ll pick you up in thirty minutes.I let out a harsh scoff, aggressively shoving my phone back into my handbag.Exactly thirty minutes later, Xavier was waiting outside my office building. He was leaning casually against the passenger side of his car, looking effortl

Cleo “Yeah,” I nodded, a heavy sigh escaping me. “I was just as shocked when I found out.” “Wait, did Xavier know that you and Damian were involved?” Dad asked, his expression growing serious with concern. “No.” I shook my head firmly. “Trust me, he had absolutely no idea.” “Oh, Cleo, honey. I’m so sorry,” Mom said, her eyes filling with empathy. “I know this must be so hard for you.” “It’s fine, Mom. It’s really not a big deal,” I said, trying to play it cool. The last thing I wanted was for my parents to pity me or feel sorry for me. “Not a big deal?” she repeated, her eyes widening in disbelief. “Cleo, you just found out that someone you loved for years kept such a huge secret from you, and now he’s suddenly engaged to a friend of yours. I think that is very much a big deal.” “Mom, it’s fine, really. What’s done is done, and I don’t want to keep dwelling on it.” She looked like she wanted to push the matter further, but thankfully, she didn’t. “Is that why you’re marrying

CleoThe walk to my parents’ office felt longer than usual. By the time I reached their door, my palms were slightly damp, and I found myself hesitating before knocking.“Come in,” Dad called from inside.I pushed the door open and stepped in.My parents were seated beside each other on the couch near the window. Neither of them looked particularly upset, but there was something about their expressions that made me uneasy.“Hi,” I greeted them, closing the door behind me.“Come and sit, darling,” Mom said, gesturing toward the chair opposite them.I walked over and sat down, placing my hands in my lap. Dad glanced at Mom before looking back at me. Mom, on the other hand, seemed unusually interested in the gold bracelet around her wrist.I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.“Okay, what’s going on?” I asked, trying to keep my tone light. “Is there a problem with the company?”“No, sweetheart,” Dad replied.“Then what is it?”He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees.“T

CleoThe rest of dinner went by quietly. When we were done eating, I helped Mom clear the table before we all moved to the living room.Dad and Xavier continued their conversation, while Mom occasionally asked me questions about the pregnancy and offered a few words of advice.Although my parents seemed to have accepted both the engagement and the pregnancy, I couldn’t help finding their reactions a little strange. I had expected more questions, perhaps even a little resistance, but neither of them seemed particularly interested in discussing the matter further. So, I decided not to dwell on it.After dinner, Xavier and I said our goodbyes, and we soon found ourselves on the road back to my apartment.I sat in the passenger seat, staring out of the window as the streetlights passed by, my mind wandering over everything that had happened that evening.“What’s on your mind?” Xavier asked, briefly glancing at me.“Nothing.”“You’ve been staring out of that window for the past ten minutes

Cleo“Pregnant?” Mom asked, her voice cracking with shock.“Yes,” I answered softly. The room fell completely silent. I kept looking back and forth between them, waiting for someone to say something—anything. But neither of them did. Mom looked as though she was struggling to put her thoughts into words, while Dad’s expression had become impossible to read.A loud, piercing beep from the kitchen suddenly shattered the heavy silence.“Oh, the chicken!” Mom gasped. “I’ll be right back.”She hurriedly stood from her seat and practically raced toward the kitchen. The living room fell right back into a suffocating quiet. Dad didn’t say a word. His intense gaze simply moved between Xavier and me, making the silence even more uncomfortable.“Cleo, come help me set the table,” Mom called from the dining room, cutting through the awkward silence.“I’m coming,” I called back loudly enough for her to hear me.I glanced between Xavier and Dad before offering Xavier a small, reassuring look. Then
