Chapter 1

[Aurelia's POV]

"Mommy, where did Daddy go?" Sofia Costello hugged her teddy bear, her amber eyes full of confusion.

I crouched to her level and smoothed her rain-soaked blond curls. "He had something important to take care of, sweetheart."

It was our tenth wedding anniversary, and Henson Costello could not even stay for an hour. We had planned to spend a summer camp weekend with Sofia, but the moment he arrived, a phone call pulled him away.

The storm outside was getting worse, rain hammering against the cabin windows with an ear-splitting fury. The staff had warned us about flash floods, and our area was also at risk for mudslides.

We needed to contact rescue immediately, but all the signals had completely cut out.

My heart sank. I frantically dug through my backpack for the emergency satellite phone and dialed Henson's number with trembling hands.

Once, twice…

I made over 90 calls, each one met with that cold, busy tone.

Sofia finally fell asleep in my arms, tear tracks still streaking her little face. I walked to the window, watching the rain grow even more brutal, and dialed that number one more time.

This time, the call finally connected.

I opened my mouth, ready to say, "Henson, we're trapped. The floodwaters could hit any second."

However, I never got the chance.

A woman's breathy moans came through the line, sweet and obscene.

"Henson...slower... You're hurting me..."

My fingers froze, recognizing that it was Angelina Rossi's voice.

She was Henson's first love.

Years ago, when the Costello family faced a crisis with rival families, she had jumped at the chance to take a job overseas without a second thought. Meanwhile, I had chosen love without hesitation, marrying Henson when he had no power and no status.

Henson became the Costello family's Don, and our marriage had looked perfect for years.

I never imagined he still could not let go of Angelina, or that his heart had already changed.

My throat tightened, and no sound came out.

"Honey, do you think Aurelia knows about Leo?" Angelina asked casually, her voice thick with satisfaction.

Leo Costello was my son who drowned five years ago at the beach outside our vacation house.

"She doesn't," said Henson calmly. "He was dead weight anyway. Trading him for control of Pier 9 was the best deal the family ever made."

Thunder exploded near the cabin, or maybe it was my heart breaking apart. My knees went weak, and I almost collapsed to the floor. I covered my mouth tightly with one hand, terrified of making even the slightest sound.

"You are really ruthless," Angelina giggled, and her laughter sent a chill through my bones. "But I guess it makes sense. Our son is the real Costello heir, and as for Sofia... She and Leo were both Vincenzo Moretti's kids, right?"

She said it so matter-of-factly, so certain.

"When the time's right, I'll take care of her," Henson cut in, his tone casual. "The Costello family only needs one heir. I won't let any love child taint the bloodline."

She purred, "Poor Aurelia... She'll be devastated when you get rid of her kid."

Henson paused. "She had two kids with another man, and that's an insult to me. Every single day, I pray for those two brats to disappear."

The phone slipped from my hand and hit the wooden floor with a thud.

It finally hit me that Leo's death was not an accident. All this time, I had blamed myself for his drowning, tormented by guilt for years… It turned out Henson had handed him over as a bargaining chip to secure control of the docks.

At that moment, I suddenly understood why he could say such things so easily.

I clenched my fists so hard that blood trickled down my palms, wishing I could drag both Henson and Angelina straight to hell.

Years ago, when the Costello family was in trouble, I had used my connection with Vincenzo to help. I spent three days with him, negotiating how to divide the docks and funnel investment money to Henson.

When I told Henson about it, he had been understanding, saying gently, "I trust you. You did this because you love me, and I'll never forget what you sacrificed for me."

At this moment, his actions made it crystal clear that he had never trusted me at all. Both of my children's paternity had been called into question.

I had to thank Angelina for answering that call and letting me hear the truth.

I picked up the phone again and pressed 'dial'.

"Vince," I said, my voice raw and rough. "I'll marry you. But you have to help me. I want the Costello family wiped off the face of the earth."

The line went silent for a few seconds. Then, his deep, husky voice came through. "I've been waiting ten years to hear you say that, Aurelia. In three minutes, my rescue helicopter will be at your location."

He paused before adding, "This time, I'm not letting you go."

My phone buzzed.

Angelina had sent me a photo of her hand resting on her slightly rounded belly, a triumphant smile on her face.

[The Costello family needs a legitimate heir, not like that drowned mongrel of yours.]

I stared at that photo as all my grief turned to ice-cold fury in an instant. It was their turn to die.

Henson stared at me in disbelief, fear flashing across his eyes. "Murder? Aurelia, did you call the cops?"I did not answer and only watched as he was dragged away.In truth, I had not called the police, but Vincenzo's influence reached deep into every department, and he had his own way of handling things.Henson turned back desperately as he was dragged out of the chapel, his voice breaking apart. "Aurelia! I didn't kill her! I just... I just wanted her to pay the price! You have to believe me!"His voice faded with distance until it disappeared beyond the chapel doors.I knew that might be the last time I ever saw him.The guests whispered among themselves, but the noise quickly died down.On Moretti's territory, no one dared to speak out of turn."Let's continue the wedding." Vincenzo held my hand and nodded calmly at the priest. His grip was warm and steady, and because of him, I slowly found my peace again."Aurelia Astor, do you take Vincenzo Moretti to be your husband

"Throw him out." I signaled to the bodyguards, my voice terrifyingly calm.I did not want blood to stain my wedding or for Sofia to witness violence. This was supposed to be a beautiful day, a day of new beginnings."No... Aurelia, please..." Henson crawled toward me in pain, grabbing the hem of my wedding dress. He knelt on the ground, pleading desperately, "I was wrong! I know I was wrong... It was all Angelina's scheme. I've dealt with her…"Come back with me, okay?"His voice was choked with tears as he continued, "We'll start over... I'll be good to you, better than before..."His hands trembled as they clutched my dress, his fingernails still stained with blood. I could feel his desperation, but my heart had gone numb."I love you, Aurelia... I've always loved you... I can't live without you..." He clung to my leg desperately. The guests murmured in low voices, some showing expressions of disgust. Sofia hid behind her seat in fear, unable to watch the scene.Henson conti

Sunlight streamed through the stained glass windows onto the white marble floor of the Moretti family estate's outdoor chapel, where flowers bloomed in abundance. White roses, lilies, and baby's breath decorated every corner, filling the air with their delicate fragrance.I stood before the priest in an ivory silk wedding gown, holding a bouquet of white roses. This dress had been custom-made for me by Vincenzo himself, with every pearl carefully selected and the lace patterns on the train exquisitely crafted.Vincenzo wore a black tailcoat, his deep blue eyes focused intently on me as if I were the only person in the world. His hand was warm and strong, giving me a sense of security I had never felt before.Sofia sat in the front row wearing a pink dress, holding a flower basket with a radiant smile on her face. She had completely accepted Vincenzo and had even started calling him 'Daddy.'"Aurelia Astor, do you take Vincenzo Moretti to be your husband, for richer or poorer, in

[Aurelia's POV]Warm sunlight shone through sheer curtains and into the room. I stood in front of the mirror and looked at my reflection. My honey-colored curls had been carefully styled into soft, elegant waves, and my emerald eyes had regained their old sparkle.I no longer looked like the exhausted woman I once was.The woman in the mirror looked calm and resolute, and there was strength in her gaze."Mommy!" Sofia burst through the door and threw herself into my arms, her little face glowing with excitement. "Uncle Vince said he's taking me horseback riding today, and he said he will buy me a pony!"I hugged her tightly and kissed her forehead. "Then you have to behave and be nice to him.""I will!" She planted a loud kiss on my cheek and ran off, bouncing with joy.Watching her joy filled my heart with warmth. This past year at Vincenzo's estate, Sofia and I had slowly healed from our wounds. Nightmares still woke me in the middle of the night at times, but they could no l

"You're right." Henson's voice was eerily calm, like the deadly silence before a storm. He slowly turned, looking down at Angelina, that twisted smile still on his face. He approached her step by step, adding, "I am the one to blame, so I'm going to make things right."A flash of madness flickered in his eyes. "Aurelia was so kind, so gentle. If I truly repent, she'll forgive me. Won't she?"He seemed to be asking Angelina, but also himself."She'll forgive me." He repeated it, his voice growing more certain. "I'll eliminate everyone who ever hurt her, then get on my knees and beg for her forgiveness."He crouched down and gently wiped the blood from Angelina's face with his finger. The gesture was tender, yet absolutely chilling. His voice suddenly turned ice-cold. "As for you... You, your worthless brother, Antonio, and your greedy family will learn what happens when you cross the Costello family."Angelina's face went deathly pale. She shook her head frantically, her voice t

Angelina screamed, "You can't do this! Deep down, you still love me, don't you?"You don't really love Aurelia! Otherwise, why would you believe me? Just forgive me this once! We can start over!"She was pinned to the ground by the bodyguards, struggling desperately with a piercing, shrill voice. Her nails scraped against the carpet, creating a harsh sound, her eyes filled with a wild, frantic hope. She continued to scream, "I know you have feelings for me! All these years, your eyes were always so gentle when we were together!"This statement was like a fuse, completely igniting the last shred of Henson's rationality. He strode toward her, his murderous intent intense. The guards wisely released her and stepped back.Henson approached Angelina, looking down at her with contempt. Then, he struck her with a brutal slap that echoed through the office. The sound was so sharp it made Angelina's entire body violently jerk. Her head whipped to one side, blood seeping from the corner o
