MasukCHAPTER 3
KATRINA
Dad shot me a sharp look, his eyes wide, intense screaming a silent command and I get it already.
I exhaled deeply and I grabbed my bag from the ground. I walked forward. My Dad quickly moved to the opposite side of the backseat and opened the door for me. I didn’t meet his eyes. I didn’t say anything. I just lowered my head and slid into the car.
The door closed behind me with a soft thud and suddenly, the world outside felt far away.
The silence inside was heavy. The scent of leather and expensive cologne surrounded me. I could feel him beside me. Boss Valerion. Just inches away and sitting still. Watching, maybe.
I quietly settled into the wide, luxurious seat, my eyes locked straight ahead, my hands clenched tightly on my lap.
After a few more seconds, Dad climbed into the driver’s seat. I could see the way his hands trembled slightly as he gripped the steering wheel.
As I heard the soft hum of the car engine, I stole a glance at Boss Valerion sitting beside me. He was just staring straight ahead, his eyes fixed on the road.
Was he really not going to say anything?
I waited, hoping he would speak, but even as we approached the main gate, his lips remained tightly sealed.
I thought for sure he’d scold me, but he stayed completely silent. Even after the countless times I’ve visited his mansion looking just like this, he never seems to care.
Is he really that determined to have me marry his son?
Is this the final decision?
I let out a deep sigh and turned my full attention to the view outside the car’s windshield.
I watched as the four stern-looking guards opened the two heavy gate bars for us.
We drove down a wide road that led into an even larger courtyard. When our vehicle finally came to a stop, my father immediately got out of the car and rushed to open the door for his boss.
Meanwhile, I opened the door on my side by myself and stepped out. “Kitty.”
I glanced over at my dad. He was signaling for me to come closer. At the same time, Boss Valerion had already started walking ahead. We quickly followed behind him.
“Dad,” I whispered under my breath as we trailed behind his boss. "When are you going to retire from being his personal driver?”
He gave me a sharp look. “If you really want me to retire, maybe you should stop giving me so much trouble.”
I fell silent as we approached the staircase. We began climbing up, and before long, we entered through the large main door. A butler greeted us as soon as we stepped in, and he promptly escorted us to the second floor.
He said we were heading to the dining hall.
When we reached a pair of large closed doors, the butler stepped forward and pushed them open.
We all filed into the room.
The first thing my eyes landed on was a man sitting casually on a modern chair.
He was on the left side of the long dining table, his long legs stretched out and resting on top of it. He was completely absorbed in his phone.
Even though it was obvious that he heard the door open, he didn’t glance in our direction. His eyes stayed glued to the screen.
As we slowly made our way closer to the table, I kept my eyes fixed on him.
And well, I had to admit.
He looked even better in person.
And I hadn’t expected him to be that... huge.
I mean, tall. He was boad-shouldered, heavyset kind of way that made you think twice before saying anything sarcastic. If the two of us ever got into a physical fight, I’d be doomed.
He was wearing a formal suit. The sleeves stopped just at his elbows, and I couldn’t help but notice how his arm muscles stood out.
And his legs were long. Like I said, everything about him was stretched out, like he was built on a different scale.
But just as I was starting to mentally acknowledge all that physical presence…
I landed my eyes on his feet. Propped up on the edge of the table.
Still wearing socks.
I cringed a little. I mean, who does that in formality like this?
My lips twitched in an involuntary wince.
Okay, no.
He’s really not my type.
Just then, as we reached the far-left corner of the long dining table and settled into a tense, awkward pause, I heard a throat being cleared and all eyes shifted to Boss Valerion.
That was when his son finally looked at me properly. His eyes moved to me, then flicked downward. He casually dropped his feet from the chair, letting them rest on the floor, and straightened his posture.
“Dad, where’s my fiancée?”
Damn, that voice...
It was deep but smooth. The kind of tone that made you freeze for a second.
“I thought today was the day?” he added, glancing around the room.
“You didn’t bring her?” he asked, eyebrows slightly raised.
That was when Boss Valerion coughed again.
“She’s here,” he said. “Right in front of you, Pierre.”
I could see his expression change.
His brows drew together, puzzled, and his gaze flicked between the faces in the room.
“Where?” he asked, turning his head. “I haven’t seen any woman here... aside from this.”
Then his eyes landed on me.
His stare hardened. There was no mistaking the disgust in his tone when he finished his sentence.
“And why did you bring that beggar into my house?” As if that wasn’t enough, he actually lifted his hand and pointed at me.
“What are you planning to do with that girl, Dad?”
“She’s not a beggar,” Boss Valerion said formally. “Allow me to introduce you to your wife, Katrina Barillas.”
The room fell into silence.
Pierre’s lips parted slightly in disbelief, like he wasn’t sure he’d heard right.
Then he turned to me with a brutal look.
“I… ain’t... marrying that shit.”
CHAPTER 53“M-Madame… Katrina…”The soft, hesitant voice drifted from behind me, pulling me out of my spiraling mind.“Why can't you... Just love Mr. Pierre?"Good grief, I had completely forgotten there was a maid standing in the garden this whole time.“What’s your name?” I asked, trying to sound composed.“Jelly, Madame…” she replied.“How old are you?” I continued.“Twenty-seven…” she answered.“Why did you say that... why did you think I can’t love Pierre?” I asked."It’s obvious, Madame. He likes you more than he likes Madame Queen…”I laughed out loud.“You actually believe in your master’s moves?” I said, shaking my head with a mix of disbelief and amusement. “He just wants to make me fall for him because he knows I don’t like him. And if he succeeds... of course... he’ll turn unbearably arrogant.” I let out another laugh. With that, I walked back to my seat before my food turned completely cold. I picked up my fork again and resumed eating, determined to finish everything.Be
CHAPTER 52KATRINA BARILLAS“Take good care of her.”Madame’s voice carried that familiar weight of authority that could silence even the wind as it passed through the garden hedges. Her heels clicked sharply against the stone path as she turned away, leaving Queen and me in the soft hush of the sunlight. The moment Madame’s figure disappeared beyond the archway of vines, I allowed myself a quick, secret glance in Queen’s direction. I gave her a small, subtle nod.She returned the gesture with the same discreet confidence.I let the air settle before speaking. “You look… exceptionally blooming today, Queen,” I said, letting my tone tease her just a little. She let out a soft, girlish giggle. “Yeah,” she admitted, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “I have to look good for Pierre’s eyes…”“I’m honestly jealous... you're just so beautiful," I responded. “You know… whenever I see you, I really do get stunned,” I went on. “You look so elegant. From the back, from the side… and espec
CHAPTER 51I splashed water on my face and gargled to wash away the lingering sleepiness before stepping out of the room. The maid fell into step beside me.We descended to the ground floor. The air grew cooler as we approached the wide glass doors leading outside. We walked through them and followed the stone path that wound gently into the garden. It felt as though my feet were leading me down the same path we had taken the day before, back to the little spot we had claimed as our own. The trees parted familiarly, the morning light slipping through their leaves just as it had yesterday. And when the open space finally revealed itself, I immediately spotted Pierre. He was seated exactly where he had been the day before, on that chair slightly angled to the side, his posture was composed, as if he had been waiting there for hours with nothing but patience to keep him company. From where I stood, the early sunlight framed him in soft gold, adding an almost serene glow to his usually un
CHAPTER 50KATRINA BARILLASI had already finished everything on my plate, yet Pierre still hadn’t finished whatever he was trying to say.At that point, I no longer knew whether he was scolding me, giving me orders, or offering advice, his words were such a confusing mixture of all three that I couldn’t even categorize them anymore. He just kept going on and on, his voice blending with the ambient noise around us until it felt like a constant buzz in my ears.“Katrina, are you listening to me?”I lifted my gaze toward him, suppressing a yawn that escaped before I could stop it. It was only then that he finally paused from the endless stream of words he had been pouring out since earlier.“I have keen ears,” I muttered, rubbing my eyes as sleepiness crept in. “So obviously, I’m listening.”“Yes, you’re listening but are you actually trying to comprehend the things I just said?” he asked, edging with irritation.“Of course I am,” I answered.I handed him the plate I’d been holding,
CHAPTER 49“Why?” I asked sleepily.“I brought you something.”I heard his footsteps approaching. When my eyes finally adjusted, I saw him standing in front of me.“You didn’t finish your dinner earlier,” he said gently. “So here... sit up and eat this.”He bent down slightly and lowered the tray to my level so I could see it clearly. On the tray was a steaming plate of steak, still glistening with juices, accompanied by boiled corn kernels and a colorful side of vegetables. The faint aroma of butter and grilled meat drifted through the air.I shot up from the bed and sat at its edge. “So, who won this time... you or your mom? You already knew she’d be furious, and yet you still went ahead and said all those ridiculous things—”I stopped talking when he suddenly reached out and grabbed my right wrist. He took a step forward right away, and instinctively, I followed. Without another word, we walked down toward the living area.“Take your seat,” he said.I drew in a deep breath before s
CHAPTER 48Katrina BarillasI went down to the dining room to eat and I was the only one there. I ended up eating a lot more than I intended to. Every dish on the table was mine, and for a moment, it felt nice having everything to myself. But that evening, when dinnertime came, my appetite suddenly vanished. I struggled to swallow. It was impossible to eat properly with Madame Precilla’s sharp eyes fixed directly on me. Her stare was so intense that it made the air around me feel suffocating.“What?!” Her strict, commanding voice echoed across the corners of the dining room. “They have been sharing the same room?!”“Yes,” Boss answered. “That was my instruction for Katrina.”“I will transfer her to the maid’s room,” Madame replied authoritatively.“Mom, there are extra guestrooms upstairs…” Queen whispered. “It would be embarrassing for Dad if you moved Katrina there…”And just like that, I could feel it, the start of the polite pretending. I saw Madame turn her eyes toward Queen for
CHAPTER 12KATRINAThe next morning, I woke up to find that Pierre was no longer on the couch. I must’ve slept really well, the kind of deep, uninterrupted sleep that you don’t want to wake up from and I had the entire bed to myself. I didn’t even know if he managed to sleep properly last night. Be
CHAPTER 11KATRINAI wasn’t even surprised by what he said. Honestly, I’d expected something like that from him. When he noticed that I wasn’t reacting, no outrage, not even a flinch, he straightened up from his slouched position. His eyes met mine again, sharper this time, as if trying to read what
CHAPTER 10KATRINA“You weren’t… impressed?” he asked, his voice tinged with disbelief.I raised both my eyebrows at him.“I mean,” he went on. "Your husband is filthy rich... hella rich and… not to brag, but I have pretty good genes, too. The least you could’ve done was welcome me properly or at le
CHAPTER 7KATRINAI was speechless for a few seconds, completely stunned. “Can’t we just… wait until after we get married?”“How are you supposed to get along if you won’t even share a bed until next month?” he responded seriously, not a trace of hesitation in his voice. I let out a fake cough, tryi
