Lily's POV.

"Anywhere" turned out to be a two-hour drive out of the city, into a quiet that arrived so gradually I didn't notice it until the noise had been gone for a while.

The road narrowed and the trees closed in on both sides, the city's heaviness which had clearly settled densely on my chest beginning to lift off my chest, replaced with a relief that washed over me.

I'd taken my shoes off in the car. Diego didn’t say anything. Not like I wanted him to, the silence was a comforting one, es

  • Marrying the Tyrant: You Will Regret Killing Me, Ex-Husband!   064

Lily's POV.By afternoon, I could walk without holding anything.Diego had spent the morning conducting a one-man campaign to ensure I didn't have to: appearing with things before I asked for them, repositioning pillows with care, basically fussing over me like I would break at the slightest mistake. I let him. It was easier than arguing, and I understood why he was doing that.By two o'clock, I was sitting up properly and the cramping had settled to something manageable and the color had apparently returned to my face. I knew, because Diego stopped checking it every twenty minutes."I want to go outside," I said.He looked at me."Not far," I said. "Just — out. I've been in this room since this morning and the walls are starting to have opinions."He stood and held out his hand, not without reluctance, of course. We walked without direction, which I couldn’t complain about. As we passed various landmarks, Diego tried to give me lores and memories he had of those landmarks, some of

Lily's POVDiego's father was looking at me directly now. He was implying something else, I realized. My mind darted back to the quizzical glance he’d thrown when he saw the partition between the bed. This was the first time, I wondered, I’d ever been able to read him.Ignoring his rhetorical question, I threw my own thoughts in his way. "Why did you remove him?""The board asked me to," he said simply. "Frank was my rightful heir, yet his position was threatened. And, incapable as he was, at the time, his position in the company required protecting. Diego was… difficult to m

Lily's POV.The ceiling was the first thing.White, unfamiliar, and then familiar. The plasterwork I'd noticed on the first day. I was in the bedroom, I realized. I was in bed.I sat up slowly. My stomach cramped in protest and I pressed my hand flat against it and breathed through it until it passed. What happened? A dull throb in the head was all I felt. All I could remember was Diego yelling my name. The door flew open and Diego emerged from behind. He looked like he'd aged somewhere between the dining room and now. His face carried something I hadn't seen on it before. He looked worried and vulnerable. And lines creased on his forehead, making appear even older. He crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed and studied me for a moment like he was checking something. He felt my temperature, poked me to see if I was hurting anywhere, which I wasn’t. I knew he liked to be thorough, but this was my first time experiencing this level of thoroughness. He pulled me into his arms

Diego's POV.Breakfast was easier this morning. The familiarity from the Vault last night still lingered at the dining table this morning, and everyone seemed rather informal and relaxed around each other.Aldric greeted Lily warmly when she sat down, helping her with the fruit juice which was far from her side of the table. Isadora then proceeded to ask her some questions about painting that pulled Lily into a ten-minute conversation I couldn’t not listen to, which was fine. I could listen to her all day.“…and I believe that the way an artist— ” Her words were cut short with a violent fit of cough.I found her back immediately, grounding her as I rubbed her back. My heart pounded in my chest for a moment, and I handed her a glass of water.“Are you alright, Lily?” That was my father. My eyes darted his way before I could control it. His eyes were slightly widened with what looked like panic but he quickly recovered as his eyes landed on me.“I’m fine, thank you.” She set the glass

Diego’s POV.Lily stilled for a moment, then she looked up to meet my father’s intrigued stare, before moving from face to face."Perrin's going to raise on the next hand regardless of what he has," she said. "He's been sitting on the same stack for minutes and it's bothering him more than he's showing." She glanced at Isadora. "Isadora hasn't touched her drink since the second hand, which means she has something she doesn't want to affect." She looked at Aldric. "And Aldric…you’re asking me questions to see if you can break my concentration, which suggests your hand is better than you've been letting on."The table went quiet for a second. When Aldric laughed, it was of delight. Lily had read him completely right, which meant she was right about all others, and he found it interesting unlike others who squirmed with embarrassment.“Diego! She’s a very clever one, your wife!” Aldric clapped as he looked at me. Something swelled in my chest as Aldric praised Lily. Her gaze found mine at

Diego's POV.“You don’t have to go.”Lily turned to face me while she adjusted her earrings. She looked stunning in this green dress, especially because it suited her. Everything did suit her, but this seemed like it was exactly for her. I couldn’t take my eyes off her.“Of course, I do,” she replied with a chuckle. “It’s my father-in-law’s birthday. It’s why he invited us.”I couldn’t tell whether she was being sarcastic or not.“Quick, help me with the necklace.” She waved me over to her side of the bed, and I moved to her immediately, looping my fingers around the necklace as I fixed it on her shoulder. When I glanced at her in the mirror, she mumbled a “Perfect!” while she leaned backward slightly into me, giving me a whiff of her beautiful shampoo.“Well, let’s go.” She stepped away, all giddy, and quickly grabbed her purse before leaving the room.Lily had been invited to the Rookwood Vault which hosted his important events, his definition of “important events” being gambling a
