Chapter 4

Author: Washing Wheat
"That's not true!" Rebecca said through gritted teeth, staring at me.

"That expression looks familiar," I said. "Wasn't that the same one you had last month when you found out your husband was seeing a college student?"

"Alright, let's take it down a notch," Sebastian said, wiping his mouth after finishing his food and stepping in as the peacemaker.

"We're all classmates. Brianna, accusations like bullying aren't something you can just throw around. Back then, everyone saw how Melissa treated you. You can't just say things like that without evidence."

"There weren't any cameras in the storage room. What evidence could she even—"

Vexana stopped short, realizing too late that she had let something slip, and instinctively glanced at Melissa.

Melissa, on the other hand, turned on Sebastian with a furious glare.

Sebastian immediately put on an innocent expression.

Everyone at the table understood what that unfinished sentence implied. Murmurs spread almost immediately.

"So it really happened? I didn't expect her to be that kind of person."

"Bullying can land you in jail. Doing something like that at such a young age is frightening. It's a good thing I never crossed her."

The discussion was still building when Zachary slammed his hand down on the table. The sudden sound made the glass in front of me shake, and the wine nearly spilled.

"Brianna, that's enough!" he said. "We're all classmates. There's no need to keep pressing people over trivial matters from the past."

Melissa looked at him with obvious gratitude, her expression soft and shy.

He was trying to play the hero. How ridiculous.

"I was too busy dealing with those bitches that I forgot about you for a moment."

I pulled out the injury assessment, medical records, and therapy notes from my bag and slammed the thick stack down in front of him.

"Being bullied, falsely accused, used like a tool, driven to self-harm, and nearly ending my own life—were they all trivial matters?"

"I…"

Zachary's face flushed red, and he couldn't say anything else.

Those who had been whispering moments earlier all fell silent, covering their mouths as they exchanged looks.

"Zachary, every single one of these things was a nightmare I can never forget," I said.

"Hey, Brianna, can you get this straight?" someone said impatiently. "This is a class reunion, not some kind of public trial. Can't we just eat in peace?"

I turned to look at the speaker. It was Jackson Wright, the class secretary.

Back in high school, he'd never held back when it came to verbally abusing me. He used to say my bob haircut hurt his eyes, that I walked around all day with a blank expression and a sickly yellow face, like something not quite human.

The insecurity that haunted me for years had his name written all over it.

Now, looking at him again, he had slicked-back hair, a bloated face, and a protruding beer belly that even his oversized suit couldn't hide.

Years had passed, but he was just as unpleasant as ever.

"Fine," I said. "Anyone who'd rather not hear old stories is welcome to leave. Just tell the front desk my name, and they'll set you up with a complimentary bottle of premium red wine on me. Consider it my apology."

"Can I pick it up after this is over?" Sebastian asked, raising his hand and clearly enjoying the chaos.

I rolled my eyes at him. "Of course."

That only made everyone even less willing to leave. After all, who didn't want to hear gossip about the former stars of the class?

"Mention your name? Who do you think you are?" Jackson sneered. "This is one of the top restaurants in Nadoria. A bottle of wine here costs at least a few thousand, if not tens of thousands. You run a small company and think you can just give it away? You really think you're capable of that?"

Having been embarrassed earlier, he refused to let it go.

I glanced around and saw that the others were watching eagerly and waiting for my reaction.

Noticing the server who had been standing nearby for a while, I waved him over. "You tell him. Am I capable of doing that or not?"

"Of course, you are, Ms. Shore."

"Honey, the truth is, the day after the reunion, Zachary came looking for you.""Why? Did he follow me?"My confusion turned into shock.Quincy clearly hadn't expected that reaction and let out a quiet breath. "He said he wanted to apologize to you in person, but I turned him away. I told him my wife wouldn't want to meet with trash like him."I couldn't help bursting into laughter.Quincy had been raised with strict discipline his whole life, and the harshest insult he could manage was calling someone a piece of trash.I stood on the couch and held his face. "Good. But next time, try swearing a little harder."…After that, I started preparing to get pregnant.Even so, I didn't stay idle. I helped Sebastian collect evidence and deal with a family dispute. It wasn't that I enjoyed meddling. The other woman involved just happened to be Cassandra.Sebastian might look carefree and unserious, but he was actually very sensitive. I'd noticed it back in high school.Quincy told

Because of the trauma from being bullied in high school, I was afraid of the dark and even more afraid of being alone at night. The woman who first introduced me to modeling suggested I see a psychiatrist. I told her I couldn't afford it, so she took me to bars to meet men, saying that at least I wouldn't be alone that way.By sheer coincidence, it worked because that was how I met Quincy.Unfortunately, our first encounter was far from pleasant. I accused him of harassment, and he accused me of stealing his wallet. After clearing up the misunderstanding, I apologized, and he treated me to dinner.I chose the restaurant, an expensive place I'd always wanted to try but could never justify going to.A few months later, after I started earning money, I went to see a psychiatrist through a friend's recommendation.I didn't realize it at the time, but that so-called top psychiatrist was actually Quincy. At the time, he was using Sebastian's name, pretending to be him.I later found

Rebecca concluded her speech with righteous passion, then looked at me with a triumphant smile."Oh," I said calmly. "He's my husband. We've been married for three years. We sleep in the same bed every night, and I saw him this morning, so why would I be surprised to see him here?"After I spoke, the classmates who understood immediately burst out laughing."So, the reason your husband repeatedly spam-called me and begged me to come over was because you wanted me to pick up my wife?" Quincy said as he pulled me into his arms and wrapped an arm around my waist. He looked straight at Rebecca and continued, "Ms. Jenkins, please tell your husband that, from now on, my clinic will no longer partner with his university."Realizing that she had failed to smear me and had instead caused her husband to lose an important partnership, Rebecca panicked."Dr. Aldrich, I was ignorant and made a mistake. Could you please—""That's enough," he cut her off. "I don't work with people who lack pro

By the time lunch reached its later stages, I'd already settled the scores with everyone who had bullied me back then. Since I'd achieved what I came for, I no longer had the patience to sit around listening to them brag about their lives.I was just about to stand up and leave when Rebecca, who had rushed over after finishing a phone call, stopped me."Oh, I almost forgot about you."Before deciding to attend the reunion, I'd looked into nearly everyone who'd ever bullied or humiliated me. Rebecca was the one exception.I didn't have any friends in the education system, so the only information I could find about her came from the school's public website."Brianna, I'm really sorry," she said. "I know what I did back then was wrong, and I know you probably won't forgive me. I just want to do something to make up for the pain I caused you."As expected of a teacher, she spoke in polished, well-practiced phrases."What are you trying to do?" I asked."I had my husband get in touc

Sebastian immediately jumped in, buttering me up.The moment gossip came up, no one paid attention to Zachary anymore. Everyone set their utensils down and leaned in."Yeah, Brianna. Go on. Tell us.""A friend of mine works in colorectal surgery," I said. "A few nights ago, their department admitted a woman in her 40s. She's wealthy, runs a jewelry business, and is very polite and soft-spoken. "But the tests showed she had syphilis. She didn't get checked early enough, so she occasionally experiences hallucinations and paranoia.""What does that have to do with Melissa?" someone asked.Even Melissa was staring at me now, clearly waiting for an explanation."She didn't get infected on her own," I said evenly. "As for who passed it to her, that's something our star student here might want to explain."Zachary's expression finally cracked, and he stood up abruptly."You're making things up!" he snapped. "I didn't do anything!""I never said it was you, but you just admitted to

I watched Jackson's face turn an even uglier shade than before. Satisfied, I smiled and returned to my seat.Halfway through the meal, the atmosphere slowly relaxed, and people started talking about work."Honestly, Brianna, you're impressive," Cassandra said, idly caressing the gold bracelet on her wrist. "Becoming a boss at such a young age and even running a restaurant is no small feat."She looked sweet and innocent on the surface. The words she chose, however, carried a different intent."Exactly," I said. "Not everyone can make it on ability alone. Some people have to rely on other advantages. You must've dealt with plenty of trouble over the years. Those angry wives can be relentless. Still, it's good to hear you're married now. At least that clears up any misunderstandings."I knew Cassandra's husband.People called him a wealthy tycoon, but in reality, he was nothing more than a contractor with some money. He was nearly 50, with no looks and no physique to speak of. The
