Tiffany’s POV

Mrs. Bennett walked ahead of me without saying a word. Her heels clicked against the floor, her posture just as perfect as before.

I studied her from behind.

She looked like the type of person who had worked in this house for decades. Someone who knew every secret hidden behind every door.

That made her just as important to watch as Jacquelline herself.

People like Mrs. Bennett didn’t stay in a place like this by accident. They stayed because they were trusted.

Which meant I

  • Mindreader   Chapter 31: The Birthday Surprise

Tiffany's POV The next morning, I woke before dawn. Summer was still asleep, her arm thrown over her face as if she was trying to block out the entire world. I tied my hair back in a loose knot and quietly went downstairs. The kitchen smelled like cinnamon and warm apples. Mama Rose was already there, moving between the ovens and the counter with the same practiced ease she had every morning. When she saw me, she smiled. “Happy birthday, Tiffy,” she said, wiping her hands on her apron. A fresh apple pie sat on the counter, still warm from the oven, with a single candle waiting in the center. My chest tightened. “Mama Rose, you didn’t have to…” “Yes, I did.” She waved me over with a smile. “Come on. We do this every year, don’t we? Warm apple pie and a candle. Just like always.” I walked over to the counter, and Mama Rose lit the candle for me. The small flame flickered between us as she stepped back and looked at me with a soft smile. “Make a wish,” she said. I closed my eye

  • Mindreader   Chapter 30: The Heartbeat After Midnight

Tiffany's POV “I think someone’s following us,” I said quietly, glancing at Summer’s head lolling against my shoulder. She was humming to herself, completely oblivious. “What? Where are you?” “I just left a bar downtown. I’m walking home, but something feels off.” The prickling at the back of my neck intensified. I slowed just enough to scan the parked cars again. A dark sedan sat two rows behind us with its engine running. The headlights were off, but I could see the faint glow of the dashboard. I reached out with my mind. [There she is. The blonde one.] The voice belonged to an older man, rough and gruff, and the moment I heard it, my heart started pounding harder. [This is taking too long. We should have grabbed her already.] Another man. At least two of them. “Hale, there’s definitely someone following us. I can hear their thoughts. At least two people are in a dark sedan about fifty feet behind us.” “Shit.” His voice tightened immediately, but he kept it controlled. “

  • Mindreader   Chapter 29: The Night Off

Tiffany's POV By the time I rode back to the Fernandez estate, my head was still spinning from running into Scars. I barely made it through the back entrance before I noticed something strange. Maids were leaving. Two of them passed me with duffel bags in their hands, heading toward the side door without so much as a glance in my direction. I slowed to a stop and frowned. Okay. What did I miss? I parked the bicycle near the entrance, grabbed the cake box, and carried it inside. Mrs. Bennett was standing by the kitchen island. I walked over and set the white box gently on the marble counter. "Here's the cake." She turned around and nodded. "Thank you, Sofia. You can head out now." I blinked. "Head out? Did I get fired?" Mrs. Bennett sighed and shook her head. "No. Tomorrow is Madam Jacquel's daughter's birthday. She gives everyone the day off every year because she prefers to spend it alone. The entire staff gets twenty-four hours away from the estate. You can come back the

  • Mindreader   Chapter 28: The Second Encounter

Tiffany's POV Of course. Because apparently, avoiding Scars once today wasn't enough. The universe had apparently decided we needed a second encounter, and judging by the timing, it had a seriously messed-up sense of humor. First the Fernandez estate. Now this. I had no idea what was going on, but I was beginning to suspect that staying away from Zane Knight was going to be a lot harder than I thought. “Zane,” I managed to say. My voice sounded much thinner than I wanted it to. “I didn’t think I’d see you here.” His eyes stayed on mine for a moment before he glanced toward the bakery behind me. “In Riverton. In this exact place.” “Yeah. I wasn’t expecting to see you either.” His eyes scanned my face before settling briefly on my arm. His jaw tightened for a second before he looked back at me. “I’ve been wondering how you’ve been,” he said quietly. “After everything that happened, I didn’t exactly stop thinking about whether you were okay.” A nervous lump formed in my throa

  • Mindreader   Chapter 27: The Worst Possible Timing

Tiffany's POV I had two choices, and neither one of them ended well. I could let Scars open that door, see my face, and destroy everything I had worked so hard to protect. My identity, my cover, Lucas’s cover, and the entire operation would be exposed before we even had the chance to finish what we started. Or I could drop the tray, make it look like a careless mistake, and pray Jacquelline did not fire me on my first day. Getting fired would ruin the current mission, but it was something we could recover from. We could find another way inside and rebuild the plan. Being exposed was different. Once Scars knew who I was, there would be no recovering from it. Everything we had worked for would be over. So I made my choice. The moment the door handle started to turn, I loosened my grip. The tray slipped from my hands before the door could fully open. The crash exploded through the hallway, far too loud for a simple accident. The coffees spilled first, followed by the plates and

Tiffany’s POV Mrs. Which meant I needed to be careful around her. We reached another staircase leading to the third floor, and the difference was obvious the second we stepped onto it. The staff became fewer, the house became quieter, and the two guards stationed near the hallway entrance made one thing clear: this part of the house wasn’t meant for everyone. Mrs. Bennett stopped in front of a door at the end of the hallway. “This will be your room.” She unlocked it and pushed the door open. The room was far nicer than I

  • Mindreader   Chapter 5: The Target

Tiffany's POV Hours later, I found myself staring at the bag sitting on the bed. The clock on the wall read nine o’clock. We had exactly two hours before the ship sailed, and for the first time, the weight of what we were about to walk into really started settling in my stomach. I slipped into t

  • Mindreader   Chapter 4: The Transformation

Tiffany’s POV Five minutes later, we were shoved into matching salon chairs. Apparently, the “premium transformation package” came with champagne, cucumber water, and two stylists aggressively touching our hair without permission. I stared at myself in the mirror while a pink-haired stylist sect

  • Mindreader   Chapter 3: The Harpers

Tiffany's POV “Alright then, I’m leaving before you suddenly decide I need a fake fiancé too.” Mercer snorted quietly, already reaching for another file. “Don’t tempt me.” A small laugh escaped me before I turned toward the door. “Oh, and Tiffany?” Mercer called before I reached it. I glanced b

  • Mindreader   Chapter 2: The New Partner

Tiffany's POV Mercer fought back a smile. "Hale is one of the best detectives we have." "He already hates me," I countered. "He hates everyone. Don't take it personally." [Including me. Constantly.] Mercer leaned across his desk, his expression turning serious. "Tiffany, Hale has spent the last
