Darius's POV

The cellar smelled of damp stone and fear, but beneath the rot and the dust I could feel her, and the scent of her was a riot of roses and adrenaline that hit me like a physical blow. The pulse of her life was a steady rhythm in the dark and I watched the rise and fall of her chest, noting the way the silk of her dress was caught in the ropes Venus had tied far too tightly. My wolf roared behind my ribs and demanded blood for every mark on her skin, but I clenched my jaw and forced the human part of me forward because I needed to be controlled and focused and merciless.

I stepped closer and every footfall echoed against the sweating walls while the silence of the cellar seemed to shrink around us. Iris’s hair caught the faint moonlight and it fell across her pale face like a curtain I wanted to lift, and my fingers itched to burn through those strands just to see her eyes. My hands were shaking with the urge to touch her and rip away those ropes so I could claim her righ

DARIUS’S POVThe drug Venus had hit me with was a slow-burn neuro-suppressant. It was designed to dull the wolf, to make me sluggish and compliant. It wasn't working. If anything, the chemical interference was making the wolf more erratic, more violent. It felt like a caged beast pacing against my ribs, baring its teeth at every shadow. Every time I looked at Iris, pale, bruised, but standing tall the rage flared hotter. We met Finch in a darkened alleyway two blocks from the Gala. The little tailor was trembling, his eyes wide as he handed over two garment bags through the window."The... the red one, Alpha. As you requested," Finch stammered."Move," I barked, not waiting for a thank you.I pulled into a private parking garage beneath the Gala venue. We had ten minutes."Change," I told Iris, stepping out of the car to give her the meager privacy of the tinted windows.I stripped off my bloodied shirt and threw on the fresh one Finch had provided. I didn't bother with the tie. I wan

IRIS’S POVThe interior of the SUV was a silent, high-speed vacuum. Outside, the world was a streaked blur of midnight blues and forest blacks as Darius pushed the vehicle to its mechanical limit. The speedometer needle danced toward numbers that felt like a death wish, but I didn't tell him to slow down.I sat in the passenger seat, wrapped in his oversized tuxedo jacket. The scent of him—expensive cologne, iron, and the musk of our recent, desperate coupling—was the only thing keeping me from shattering into a thousand jagged pieces.A tragedy is the perfect incentive. My father’s voice on that recording played on a loop in my head. It was a cold, calculated cadence. He hadn't just allowed my kidnapping; he’d choreographed it. I was a line item on a ledger, a sacrificial lamb offered up to ensure the Wolfe coffers opened wide."Stop thinking about it," Darius commanded, his eyes fixed on the road. His hands gripped the steering wheel so hard the leather groaned."How can I not?" I a

IRIS’S POVThe silence that followed Venus’s exit was heavier than the darkness had ever been. It was thick with the scent of ozone, damp stone, and the sharp, metallic tang of Darius’s blood.I stepped out from behind him, my legs trembling so violently I feared they might give out before I reached him. He hadn't moved. He stood like a statue carved from obsidian, his back to me, shoulders rising and falling with a jagged, predatory rhythm."Darius," I whispered, my voice cracking. He didn't turn. "I told you to stay quiet."His voice was a low, guttural rasp that sent a shiver of both fear and heat down my spine. The sedative was still a dull hum in my veins, but the adrenaline was winning, sharpening every sensation to a painful edge.I reached out, my fingers hovering over the dark tear in his expensive tuxedo shirt. The fabric was soaked, the black material looking even darker where the blood had bloomed."She drugged you," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What was in

Darius ~The wood of the stairs groaned under heavy, deliberate footsteps and they were feminine and unhurried because Venus never rushed for anything. She liked to taste the anticipation of her prey before she swallowed it whole, so I stood my ground and felt the heat of my own rage beginning to boil over. I tightened my hold on Iris and kept her tucked at my side while I shielded her with my frame, and I could feel her pulse fluttering against my wrist like a trapped bird that was quick and terrified but very much alive.Fear keeps people aware and I needed her to stay awake for what was coming next. The door at the top of the cellar creaked open and Venus stepped in with a silk dress and bare feet and a mouth painted the color of fresh, wet wounds. Her dark hair spilled down her shoulders in waves like sin had dressed itself and decided to smile, but her eyes flicked to Iris first because she was always calculating the damage before she looked at me with a slow and decadent interes

IRIS~The world tilted sideways and it wasn't a violent movement because it felt more like the floor had quietly decided it no longer believed in gravity, so I just slid with it.The sedative wrapped around my thoughts like a heavy velvet shroud and it was pressing me into the stone wall like a pinned butterfly, making my lungs remember how to breathe only because my body had been doing it for years without my permission.Everything else felt new and wrong and far too sharp for a girl who was supposed to be fading away into the dark.Conrick stayed exactly where he was and he looked like a shadow carved into the corner of the cellar, still and watchful and terrifyingly patient. He didn't touch me again but I could feel the heat of his gaze on my skin, and the small vibration of the tracker pulsed weakly in my palm where he’d tucked it between my fingers like a heartbeat that didn't belong to me.I tried to close my hand around it so I could claim it or hide it, but the rope bit deeper
