Chapter 1

I put my phone away and hugged Mom one last time.

"Have a safe trip, Mom."

I rested my head against her shoulder, so thin from her illness that I could feel the bones beneath her clothes, and my eyes began to burn.

"Once I finish the paperwork for my resignation, I'll take the train home tomorrow. I'll stay with you from now on. I'm not leaving again."

Mom paused.

"What about Nicole? Aren't you two getting married?"

Nicole Davis was my girlfriend, and one of the best internal medicine doctors at Aldora Medical Centre.

We had been together for five years. I'd moved across most of Corvia for her and started over in Aldora so we could build a life together.

But when Mom was hospitalized for 20 days and needed surgery for stomach cancer, Nicole never came to see her once.

Mom had checked herself into a hospital in Aldora without telling me. When my aunt finally called me on the first day, I was out of town on a business trip.

I had no choice but to call Nicole and ask her to look after Mom for a little while.

I told her I'd head straight to the hospital the moment my meeting ended and take over from there.

She was silent for several seconds after answering.

Then, her voice came through the phone, cold and detached. "Kevin's moving today. I already took the day off to help him, so I can't make it to the hospital."

With that, she ended the call.

By the time I finally got away and rushed to the hospital, Mom had spent five hours sitting alone in the lobby because she couldn't figure out where she was supposed to check in.

Her test results came back the next day.

It was Stage 3 stomach cancer.

I couldn't bring myself to tell her. Instead, I hid in the stairwell and cried where no one could see me.

When I felt like I couldn't hold myself together anymore, I called Nicole and asked if she could sit with me for a while.

She didn't even hesitate when she turned me down.

"It's Kevin's first day as an intern at the hospital. I can't leave."

Maybe she realized how bad that sounded, because she followed it with a few stiff words of reassurance.

"Stage 3 stomach cancer has a 50% remission rate. A lot of patients live for another two to five years after they're diagnosed. Try not to worry so much."

I froze.

My lips trembled, but for a long time, I couldn't get a single word out.

A lot of patients?

But I only had one mom.

We requested surgery on the third day, but it wasn't until the tenth that Mom was finally given a date.

Every day we spent waiting felt unbearable. I begged Nicole more than a dozen times to see if there was anything she could do to get Mom in sooner.

She refused every time.

According to her, the fact that Mom was related to her made it even more important that she kept things strictly professional.

Then, that same night, I went to the cafeteria to pick up dinner and overheard two nurses from Nicole's department talking in the elevator.

"I swear, I have no idea what Dr. Davis sees in that new intern. He recognized one of the patients during rounds as someone he went to elementary school with, and she actually insisted on pushing back the stomach cancer surgery on the 13th floor until Wednesday.

"Everyone here knows Dr. Casey operates on Wednesdays. He's getting older, and his hands aren't exactly steady anymore…"

The memory cut off when a tear fell onto Mom's clothes.

Her arms stiffened around me for a moment before relaxing again. Then, she stroked my hair with her rough, warm hand, deliberately keeping her voice light.

"Don't cry, Mike."

She gently wiped away my tears. "Things are going to get better."

She was right.

Mom had only ever had me. From now on, she was all I had, too.

Nicole glanced at him coldly. "If you're uncomfortable, go back. I can wait by myself."Kevin was rendered speechless. His eyes immediately reddened. "That's not what I meant. I'm just worried about you, Nicole."This time, however, his wounded expression only made her angry."Did I ask you to worry about me?" she snapped. "Mike wouldn't have left if it weren't for you. Do you really think I haven't figured out what you've been doing all this time? Maybe you can fool my parents, but you can't fool me. From now on, I want nothing to do with you. Leave.""I…"Kevin had probably never imagined that Nicole would speak to him that way. Humiliated and furious, he stormed off.As time passed, I stopped caring whether Nicole was around. She appeared in the neighborhood so often that eventually, she became nothing more than part of the scenery. Then, one day, while I was out grocery shopping, I ran into Amelia Baker, an elementary school classmate who had also sat beside me throughout mi

When Nicole saw how calmly I had accepted her apology, she hurried to apologize once more."I was so busy that day. I didn't realize Mrs. Quinn was that sick. If you're angry, slap me. I don't care. I'll do anything you want if you'll just take me back."Mom's medical records were right there in the hospital system. Nicole worked at Aldora Medical Centre and could've checked them whenever she wanted, yet she was standing in front of me claiming she hadn't known how serious Mom's condition was.Did she really not hear how absurd that sounded?I was tired of going in circles with her, so I made myself clear."I already said everything I needed to say in those messages. When I said we were breaking up, I meant it. Being with you was exhausting, Nicole. Go back to Aldora. Be with Kevin. Your parents would be happy about it, and you can stop wasting your time coming after me.""No!" Nicole looked close to breaking down. "You're the one I love. I won't be happy with anyone else. I

Little by little, Mom began looking healthier, which reassured me that coming home had been the right decision. Now and then, she would casually mention Nicole, and I would always change the subject.I hadn't explained our breakup to Mom in detail because I didn't want her thinking she'd somehow ruined my relationship. Still, after I suddenly quit my job and moved home, even she could guess that something had happened, and I knew she couldn't help feeling guilty about it.Every time Mom had visited me in the past, Nicole had treated her poorly.I knew Mom had put up with it solely for my sake. My relationship had already hurt her far too much, and realizing that only deepened my resentment toward Nicole.I certainly never expected Nicole to come looking for me.Knowing her, I'd assumed that once I left, she would curse me out, convince herself I was an idiot who didn't know how good I had it, and eventually marry Kevin. Then, she could spend the rest of her life waiting for t

"Dr. Davis, we have an emergency! We need you here!"By the time Nicole finished the surgery, it was already early the next morning. Her job had always been demanding, and I used to hate seeing how exhausted it left her. Even after working a full day myself, if I knew she was staying late at the hospital, I would make one of her favorite late-night snacks or cook some soup and bring it over.Nicole always told me there was no need and insisted I should stay home and sleep instead, but that was what people did when they were in love. Sometimes, one went out of their way for someone simply because doing it made them happy. The hospital was usually quiet and deserted late at night. Nicole would sit there drinking the soup I brought while I pulled up a chair beside her and cracked jokes. Those were the rare moments when her parents and Kevin weren't around, and it was just the two of us. For a little while, it almost felt as though we'd caught a glimpse of what a happy life to

Nicole wanted to stop me from leaving. She didn't want to break up.By then, however, I was already on the train home.As the train pulled away from Aldora, I said goodbye to everything that belonged to my past, including Nicole. My phone kept buzzing. When I finally checked it, her messages filled the screen."Mike, where did you go?""Mike, I know I messed up. Please don't leave me…""Mike, I'm sorry. I know I screwed things up. Please don't leave me, okay?"I read one desperate apology after another, yet none of them stirred anything in me.It was far too late for regret. If Nicole had paid even a little more attention to me, our relationship never would have reached this point. With a heavy heart, I deleted all the messages and blocked her on every app and platform we used. Then, I tapped on my conversation with Mom.She'd asked what time I expected to arrive and told me that my room was already prepared. Early that morning, she'd even gone grocery shopping so she coul

Those words left Nicole staring silently at her phone for a long time. She had expected me to be angry and had even prepared several ways to deal with it. She could buy me a gift and coax me into forgiving her, just as she'd done before, or she could turn the blame around on me and accuse me of being unreasonable and failing to understand her situation.Either approach had always worked. No matter how upset I was, I had eventually forgiven her.But this time was different.Over the years, Nicole had made promises she never kept and repeatedly raised my hopes before disappointing me all over again. Even so, until she saw that breakup message on her screen, it had never once occurred to her that I might be the one to end our relationship. For the first time, panic set in.Without another thought for her parents or Kevin, Nicole turned to leave.Kevin's face fell, and he immediately seized her arm."Nicole, where are you going? I already ordered everything. You're not seriousl
