Chapter 2

Author: Enlightened
"Celeste, if you look down on our poor relatives, just say it! Who are you trying to fool with these pieces of scrap paper on Christmas?"

Everyone's gaze turned to me, then to my mom.

My mom was about to accept everyone's gratitude when her smile froze instantly. "What... What happened?"

She immediately stood up, slapped the table, and shouted angrily, "Celeste! You brat, I told you to give a gift envelope filled with cash to everyone. What did you use to deceive everyone instead?"

Her reaction was quick, immediately shifting the blame onto me. "I gave them good stuff, but she swapped them out. "

Cheryl immediately played along, rattling her cutlery on the table. "I knew it! Celeste, you're too greedy! How dare you swallow the cash prepared for our relatives?"

Our relatives' expressions changed instantly — from disappointment to contempt.

"It turns out it was embezzled; that's completely out of line."

"She'd even scam her own mother out of her money. What a waste of all those years of education."

Facing everyone's condemnation, I remained calm. I even helped myself to a piece of braised pork with a pleasant smile. “Mom, you should at least have a conscience when you say things like that.”

I put down my cutlery and took out the remaining unsealed gift envelope from my bag. "This is all you gave me. I didn't touch a single one. I packed them untouched. If you've forgotten, take a look at the rubber bands holding them together."

I turned the gift envelope upside down and shook it out in front of everyone.

Those tattered vouchers fell out, still bound by a rubber band that had a few strands of graying hair caught in it.

I pointed at the hair. "Mom, this rubber band is the kind you use to tie up your hair; it's even got strands of your hair wrapped around it. My short hair certainly doesn't require anything like that."

The evidence was irrefutable.

My mom's face instantly turned crimson red.

The hair was unmistakable — half-black, half-white, and with the same curl pattern as the hair on the crown of her head.

The look in our relatives' eyes changed again; this time, they were looking at my mom with suspicion.

"Sophia, are these... really your gifts?" Mary asked tentatively.

My mom's eyes darted around, clearly panicking. However, her greatest talent in life was being unreasonable. "I... of course not! Right! Celeste, did you make a mistake?"

She slapped her thigh, feigning exasperation. "The real gift envelope must still be at home!"

It was an excuse so lame that even a three-year-old would not buy it, but Cheryl bought it — or rather, she needed that excuse to pick a fight.

Cheryl stood up and pointed a finger right in my face. "You grabbed the wrong one on purpose! You wanted to humiliate Mom! How can you be so evil? If you knew Mom had grabbed the wrong one, why didn't you say something?"

I stood up too, towering half a head above her as I looked down at her. "I did say something. Mom insisted these were 'VIP premium vouchers' and were more valuable than gold. As her daughter, how could I possibly contradict her?"

Cheryl was left speechless by my retort.

Sensing the situation was getting out of hand, my mom deployed her ultimate tactic. "Alright, that’s enough! Why are we arguing during Christmas?"

She glared at me and ordered, "Since it was a misunderstanding, pay up right now, Celeste! Give everyone an extra 1,000-dollar gift envelope as an apology!"

1,000 dollars — with over a dozen people at the table, that would come to more than ten thousand dollars.

She was certainly generous, using my money to buy herself goodwill.

I sat back down and calmly wiped my mouth. "You gave me paper scraps; why should I make up for it with real money? I'm not paying."

"You won't pay?" Cheryl shrieked, reaching out to knock my plate right off the table.

Pasta scattered across the floor, and the sauce splattered onto my coat.

"Celeste! Why are you acting poor? You know how many of Mom's reward points you pocketed over the years!"

Three months later, I moved to a new city, changed my job, and blocked all my family's contacts. I only kept one setting where 1,500 dollars would be automatically transferred every month.According to a sensible cousin from my hometown, who was the daughter of Lana, whose account was banned, Cheryl had to work at a factory to pay off her debts. Every day, she came home exhausted, only to care for our bedridden mother. They could not afford a caregiver, so the two spent their days fighting and cursing each other. My mother called Cheryl a thief, saying she stole her pension money.Cheryl called my mother senile for insisting on spoiling her. Now both of them were suffering. The home that had once been consumed by greed and vanity was now a living hell filled with endless chaos.I sat on the balcony of my new home, sipping on coffee. In my hand was a scratch-off lottery ticket that I had just received from the supermarket.[Congratulations! You have won a 5-dollar voucher.]I s

At the hospital, my mom lay in bed with an IV drip attached. The doctor said it was due to a sudden emotional outburst and a spike in blood pressure. There was no immediate danger to her life, but she needed to rest.Cheryl was taken away by the police to make a statement. Because she was an immediate family member and my mom refused to file a case against her and arrest her after waking up, they only gave her a verbal warning and let her go back. The atmosphere in the ward was tense. My mom looked ten years older as she lay there, staring blankly at the ceiling.Cheryl sat on the side, cutting apples, her hands still shaking. She did not dare look at our mom or at me. "Celeste... Could you lend me some money to cover the shortfall?"Cheryl suddenly spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "Mom needs money for treatment. That financial platform may have vanished, but I'm still trying to recover a little..."I looked at her, filled with disbelief. Even now, all she could think ab

I thought this matter had come to an end for the time being.Unexpectedly, the real disaster occurred just two days later.I was at work when I suddenly received a call from the police station. "Are you Sophia Lawson's daughter? Your mother made a scene at the bank and smashed the counter glass. Please come over."When I arrived at the police station, my mom was throwing a full-blown tantrum in the mediation room.Cheryl stood off to the side, shrinking into herself and not daring to say a word."What happened?" I asked a police officer. The police officer looked helpless. "The old lady insists that the bank swallowed her money. She said her account had 300,000 dollars in pension funds, but now it's all gone. She insists that the bank stole it."'300,000 dollars?' I thought and was stunned for a moment. My mom was ridiculously stingy, even picking rotten vegetable leaves out of the trash to eat. Could she really have saved 300,000 dollars? Moreover, if she had that much money

As soon as the word "fraud" was uttered, the air in the private room seemed to be sucked dry.My mom stopped whimpering and sat up straight, showing no sign of having a heart attack at all."Are... Are you going to sue your own mother?" She stared at me in disbelief."You two forced me to do it." I pulled out a chair and sat down calmly.Just then, Lana suddenly shrieked. "Ah! My livestream! It's been banned!"It turned out that because I had shown too many real transaction records and the word "fraud", along with the frenzied reports from netizens, the platform judged that the live stream room had illegal inducement and fraud risks, so they suspended Lana's account. Before the account was suspended, the final wave of traffic had already propelled the livestream to the top of the local trending charts. The headline now read: [Toxic Family Exposed: Daughter Fights Back in Epic Showdown].Lana was on the verge of tears. She had only wanted to ride the drama to gain followers, bu

I opened the banking app and effortlessly retrieved the transaction records for the past three years. "Lana, bring the camera closer."I called out to the still-dazed Lana. She subconsciously pointed the camera at my phone screen."May 2021, transferred to Cheryl, remark: computer purchase, 8,000 dollars.""October 2021, transferred to mom, remark: medicine for dad, 5,000 dollars.""January 2022, payment for Amazon order, double-door refrigerator, 12,999 dollars.""June 2022, sponsorship for Cheryl's graduation trip, 10,000 dollars."...I read them out one by one. Each one had an electronic receipt with the time, amount, and remarks. The entries went on and on, adding up to well over half a million."Mom, Cheryl." I put away my phone and looked at their pale faces. "Did this money come from the points conversion? Or did my bank card also get hacked and I faked it myself?"The evidence was conclusive. No matter how much they tried to argue, they seemed powerless in the face

She rushed toward me, trying to snatch my tablet, but I was well-prepared. I turned sideways and quickly pressed the screen-sharing button. The TV screen lit up.The Happy Shopping Mart app interface appeared on the screen for everyone to see, including Lana's livestream that was flooding everyone's feeds. The screen was huge, and the fonts were clear. Even the words "Welcome, esteemed member Ms. Sophia Lawson" could be seen clearly.Cheryl still tried to struggle. "It must be a picture you photoshopped! It's fake!"I clicked the refresh button on the tablet in front of everyone.
