The inn was called The Dovecote. It was warm, with a low ceiling, and smelled of woodsmoke, roasted meat, and spilled ale. Under different circumstances, I would have been glad to see it. I handed my horse to the stable boy, pushed through the door, and stood there for a moment, letting the warmth hit me.

The room was half full. Farmers occupied most of the tables, with a couple of merchants by the look of them, and a group of men crowded around a table in the far corner. They had the loud

Lord Draken I was not asleep. Vampires did not sleep. Precisely, we stilled. The body’s endless, restless machinery would wind down to its lowest possible register. Breath became almost nothing. The heart slowed to a distant, occasional knock. The mind released its grip on the present moment and drifted somewhere between consciousness and its absence. It was not sleep. It was the closest thing to death that we were permitted. Perhaps that was why so many of my kind found it difficult. I had never found it difficult. I had five centuries of practice.Tonight, I had been lying in the dark gloom of my chamber, perfectly still as stone, when she came to me.She always came eventually. That was the thing I had learned about her during these encounters over the past few months. She did not navigate the dreamspace so much as drift through it, pulled by currents she was unaware of, finding her way to me the way water found its way downhill.Without intention.Without understanding.Simply t

MayaTyler had been right about one thing. He was a very heavy sleeper.I had been sitting with my back against the same birch tree he’d used, watching the tree line and listening to the forest for what felt like hours. The fire had burned down to nothing while I slept, and the dark night was dark and cold around me. The kind of cold that crept beneath your cloak and settled deep into your bones.I pulled my knees to my chest and wrapped the cloak tighter around myself as I watched the moon track slowly across the sky through the birch branches.Wind direction. What doesn’t fit?Animals don’t go quiet for nothing. The forest had been quiet in a good way.The owl was back, far off to the north. The creek murmured steadily behind me. Once, something small moved through the undergrowth at the far end of the clearing.A fox, I thought, I tracked the sound until it disappeared, and the night settled back into its ordinary rhythms.I had done the job. And I was almost proud of myself. But w

They had the loud, loose quality of people several tankards of ale deep into their evening.Zane came in behind me.Then Finn and Liam followed, both looking around the tavern with bright-eyed appreciation. Liam, especially, looked like an eighteen-year-old encountering his first proper inn without parental supervision.“Food first,” Zane said wearily. “Then sleep.”“I want to ask around,” I said. “Someone might have seen something.”Zane looked at me for a moment. “Then do that quietly and carefully,” he said.

Kai We lost the trail at the creek. One moment, it was there hoofprints pressed into the soft earth, the faint crush of undergrowth, an occasional scent marker that even a day and a half of weather hadn’t completely erased. And then the treeline broke and the bank dropped away. There was nothing but water, turning silver beneath the last of the evening light. The trail stopped.I sat on my horse, staring at the creek, and felt the anger in my chest slowly turning into something colder. Something considerably harder to control. We had picked up fragments throughout the day, a partial hoofprint here and a broken branch there. Twice, the faint thread of Valeria’s scent had drifted through the trees, as though she had brushed against the undergrowth while passing.Just Valeria.Never Maya.I’d been turning that over in my mind for hours, and I didn’t like what it suggested. Then there was the dress or what remained of it.A mile back from the creek, Finn had spotted scraps of red wool ca

TylerThe fire had burned down to glowing coals, and I let it. Too much light was a liability at night. My eyes were better in the darkness, and I needed to see or hear anything that might be following us. I sat with my back against a birch trunk, listening to the forest. The creek murmured somewhere nearby. Leaves whispered overhead. Occasionally, a branch creaked in the distance. And beneath all of it was her scent. The wind was coming off the creek, carrying it straight toward me with a persistence I was beginning to find unreasonable. The masking potion was completely gone now, washed away in the creek along with two days of road dust and sweat. What remained underneath was a problem. A significant, ongoing problem, vanilla, and beneath it, something else.Something warm, luminous, and faintly wild. Something I had no name for.My wolf had been paying very close and entirely unwelcome attention to that scent since the moment Maya Russell had grabbed my neck, fallen against my ches

MayaI sat on the horse blanket with my knees pulled tightly to my chest, watching Tyler move around the camp with the practiced ease of a man who had spent more nights beneath the stars than beneath the chandeliers of a pack dining hall.He had butchered the boar with frightening efficiency and arranged the meat over a spit he had fashioned from sticks. Every few minutes, he turned it over the flames, watching the skin slowly brown as fat dripped into the glowing coals. The smell was torture and my stomach growled loudly. Beside me, Valeria was practically drooling. I pretended not to notice. She had not said a single word about what had happened at the creek. She didn’t need to.The moment I had returned to camp, flushed from my bath and deliberately avoiding Tyler’s direction, Valeria had taken one look at me and understood everything. Without a word, she handed me my red dress. I pulled it over my clean shift as quickly as possible and sat down, determined to look as though nothin
