Chapter 22 - Irony

The last time that she cried was when her father died. It’s been so long since she last cried but since that day she met Matthew, her eyes were like a broken tap. As if Matthew was the key opening the floodgates of her tears.

Matthew clenched his fists as he heard her heart wrenching cry. War waged deep within. Should he come in and console her or just ignore her and leave.

“No, I shouldn’t pamper her or else she’ll have me wrapped around her fingers,” he muttered.

Lifting his foot as he decided to leave her, Kirsten started to cough. He froze and his resolve waned when he heard another coughing fit.

Matthew pushed the door and hurriedly approached Kirsten. She hadn’t heard him come back and was surprised when she felt a hand stroking her back.

“Stop crying, you’re coughing hard,” he said when she looked up to him. He lifted his hand to dry her face.

“Why are you back? You should go to your office,” Kirsten said in between her bouts of coughing and sniffling.
