Chapter 3

Author: Maria
With the system's help, I recovered in a day and returned to my newly rented house. I was prepared to live out the next two days in peace and quiet.

I felt much calmer without Quinn and Atlas yelling in my ear.

However, a group of black-suited men swarmed into my house two days later. Upon seeing me, one of them shouted coldly, "That's her! Take her away!"

I was still having lunch at the time. I was baffled when they covered my mouth and dragged me off to the house I used to stay in with Quinn.

Melody was in the living room, holding a wailing infant. Her eyes lit up when she saw me.

"You've finally come back, Ariel!" she exclaimed.

Then, she continued aggrievedly, "She's been crying ever since I got her. Did you feed her something? She's your child, so you can't just—"

I reflexively took my daughter from her before Melody could even finish speaking. She gradually stopped crying in my arms. She stared unblinkingly at me and even seemed to be smiling.

Quinn was dumbfounded. He didn't notice that Melody's gaze had darkened completely.

Melody gritted her teeth before forcing a smile and saying despondently, "In the end, Ariel's still her biological mother… unlike me. Who knows if I'll still have the chance to have a child of my own?"

Her words were cut off by a series of coughs, her face instantly turning pale.

Quinn immediately snapped out of his daze and hugged her, comforting her and patting her back gently. His movements were so practiced he must've done that a thousand times before.

Melody gently tried to push him away. "Ariel's still here—"

Quinn interrupted coldly, "You're my wife now, so it doesn't matter."

As he spoke, he glanced pointedly at the nanny, Goldia Jennings, who had been standing off to the side. "Well? Hurry up and take the child back!"

My daughter had already fallen asleep.

Melody carefully took her and hummed gently to her.

However, a second later, she started crying harder. She waved her hands wildly in the air, her face turning purple.

Melody started crying from fright. "What's going on? She was fine just a moment ago! How did this happen?"

Quinn led Melody and our daughter outside. "We're heading to the hospital right away."

Halfway to the door, a thought seemed to occur to him. He glanced at the men in black and ordered, "Bring Ariel Somer along as well!"

After arriving at the Langley family's private hospital, the doctor frowned down at my daughter, who was breathing weakly. "She looks like she's been poisoned."

As soon as the words left his mouth, Goldia arrived in a hurry with Atlas in tow. "This is bad! Mr. Atlas has difficulty breathing, and his face has turned purple!"

Quinn was shocked. "How did this happen to Atlas too?"

The doctor looked Atlas over with a serious expression. "These two seem to be affected by the same poison. Quick! We need to detoxify them!"

Quinn glared disbelievingly at me and roared, "What kind of poison did you feed the children, Ariel Somer? Our daughter's only four days old! How cruel can you be?

"It's no wonder you disowned them and decided to let Melody stay with me! You were already planning to frame her today, weren't you?"

I desperately shook my head. "That's not it at all! They're both my children, so there's no way I'd poison them! You can't accuse me of this without evidence!"

Quinn snorted coldly, refusing to listen. "It's not like it's the first time you've done such a thing. You were behind Melody's current condition too, so poisoning two children is hardly beyond you."

I shook my head repeatedly, tears falling from my face.

Even if I didn't like Atlas anymore, he was still my biological child. How could I even think of harming him?

I wanted to follow after the doctor to check on the children, but Quinn's men held me down before I could take more than a single step forward.

Quinn mocked coldly, "Still trying to run, are we? Just wait right there. You'll get to go home only once the children are fine."

On the day Melody was taken away, Quinn visited my grave. The photo on the tombstone was one of a 25-year-old me. I was wearing a white dress and beaming at the camera. It was taken the same year we got married. Back then, I was still able to smile.Quinn stood before the grave all night.Nobody else knew what he said. The old man working as the graveyard keeper there later told others that Quinn had just stood there from dusk till dawn, staring at the photo on the tombstone without uttering a single word. The next morning, the old man found him lying against the tombstone as if asleep. There was a piece of paper clutched tightly in his hand with only one line of text on it. "I was wrong, Ariel, so could you… look at me again?"At that moment, I was sitting in the system space, looking through these follow-up events.A system prompt appeared on the screen next to the image of Quinn."Favorability rating of capture target Quinn Langley: 100/100""Status of capture target: Term

Quinn gritted his teeth. "Why did I let her go to her prenatal checkup alone? Why didn't I wait outside the delivery room while she gave birth? Why did I take her daughter away from her? Why did I remain silent while she kneeled and begged me? Why did I do all that for your sake?"Melody's tears streamed down her face. She had never seen this side of Quinn before."I didn't drug you. You did everything willingly," she defended shakily. "You told me yourself that I needed protection while Ariel was resilient. You said she could overcome anything on her own and didn't need you."You said that just seeing her made you feel pressured, and it was only when you were with me that you felt relaxed. You were the one who said you regretted marrying her and lamented that you didn't meet me first. I'm only repeating your own words back to you!"Quinn froze. He let go of Melody's wrist, stood up, and took a step back.He had indeed said all of that.He remembered standing in front of his floo

The hospital room's door was opened, and Melody was brought in by two bodyguards. Her wrists were red from the bodyguards' grip. The moment she passed through the door, she broke away from them and staggered over to Quinn."Quinny… Hear me out. I really didn't mean to refuse to come."She looked up with tears in her eyes. "You know as well as I do about my illness. I've been coughing up blood since I woke up this morning. I kept it from you because I didn't want you to worry. Look, I'm still coughing even now."As she spoke, she took a handkerchief stained with red liquid from her pocket, covered her mouth, and started coughing violently again. Her shoulders shook, and she coughed so hard that it looked like she might collapse at any moment.Quinn gazed at her. He didn't steady her anxiously like he would have before. The look he gave Melody now made her hair stand on end.He used to always look at her with tenderness and heartache. Every time her brows so much as scrunched up,

My records read, "Attempt No. 1. Today, I made him his favorite grilled steak, but he told me to have dinner without him. Melody fell sick, so he needed to take care of her at the hospital. The steak went cold. I reheated it three times but eventually threw it away."Attempt No. 7. He told me he'd bought me a necklace as a gift for our wedding anniversary. I was so happy I wore it for an entire day. Later that night, Melody came over to our house for dinner and said that my necklace looked really nice."After some thought, he took the necklace off my neck. He said that since Melody liked it, he'd give it to her. He explained that I had a lot of accessories anyway, so I didn't need that one."Attempt No. 12. I went to the hospital for a prenatal checkup alone. When the nurse asked me why my husband wasn't with me, I answered that he was busy. In truth, he was helping Melody take care of her dog, who'd just given birth to puppies. The dog was at a vet, and he stayed there the entire a

After Quinn's bodyguards left to carry out his orders, he stood up and laid my body gently back on the hospital bed.He pulled out the blankets and tucked my body in carefully. When his fingers brushed against my cheek, he paused for an instant. In the past, my cheek had always been warm and painted with a faint blush, but now, it was cold.In the first two years of our marriage, I'd always wake up before him every morning. I'd then lay my head against his chest and rub my warm cheek against his jaw."Wake up already, Quinn! I made today's breakfast myself, so you have to give me praise!" I'd say with a smile. He would always pretend to turn over impatiently and reply with his back turned, "Okay, okay."There were only a few occasions where he was willing to take a few bites and praise me with a smile. I would be over the moon for the entire day and cook an entire feast for dinner. After Melody came into the picture, he never ate my cooking again."Ariel," he said softly. He r

"Daddy, why are you crying?" Atlas asked softly, confusion in his voice. "Melody said you'll truly be together with her soon, and then I can actually start calling her 'Mommy.' She said that this is a good thing, so you should be happy. Why are you crying instead?"Quinn turned to look at him as if he were seeing a stranger for the first time. "Who taught you to say these things?"Atlas pouted and replied matter-of-factly, "Melody did. She said that Mommy's a bad woman who occupied our home and refused to leave, preventing us from living together."Also, she said that Mommy clearly knew she didn't have long to live but purposely kept us to herself so that Melody wouldn't be able to rest in peace. Melody told me how pitiful she felt, because her biggest wish was to be family with us, but Mommy wouldn't agree.""So?" Quinn asked with frightening calm.Atlas continued obliviously, "So, Mommy just needed to be gone. As long as Mommy wasn't around, Melody would be able to move in with
