Nora's POV

The name hit me like a slap.

"Abernathy," I said slowly, memory dragging up a small, unremarkable man in a gray suit who'd notarized my signature the day I ended my marriage. "He barely said ten words to me the whole meeting. Reviewed the paperwork, had me sign, wished me well."

"That's usually how the effective ones operate," my father said grimly. "Quiet, forgettable, entirely beneath suspicion."

"Where's his office," Kade asked Elias.

"Small practice, three towns from Silvercrest.

Kade's POVI let Nora go because she was right, and I hated that she was right. The car's taillights had barely cleared the south gate when I turned and walked straight to the cellar, where Torres's people had put Thorne in the old cold room. It had no window and a single steel door. A chair, a table, a bare bulb. He sat there with his hands folded, looking like a man waiting for a late train."Alpha Parker." He nodded politely. "I wondered how long you'd make me wait.""Where's the real key?""Ah. So Venn finally did it." He sounded almost pleased. "I told him to be patient.""You told him?""I told him a great many things. Whether he listened is another matter." Thorne tilted his head. "Sit, Kade. You look like you want to break something, and this room has so little furniture."I stayed standing. Torres closed the door behind us and leaned against it, arms crossed."Start with who Venn works for," I said."Not me." The answer came too easily, and I almost believed it. "Alaric Venn

Nora's POVSarah didn't faint. I kept waiting for her to, because her face had gone the gray of wet paper, but she gripped the doorframe with both hands and stayed upright through sheer stubbornness."Say that again," Kade said, very gently."Annika." Her lips barely moved. "My little sister. She was a nurse at the Eastern clinic. There was a fire six years ago, in the records annex. They found her badge in the ashes. I buried an empty box, Kade. I've been visiting an empty box ever since."I steered her into a chair and pushed a glass of water into her hands. She held it without drinking."Rewind it," I told Torres. "Slowly."He ran the clip back. The woman paused at the service door, turned her head, and looked straight at the lens for one full second. Then she raised two fingers to her left temple, a small, tired gesture, like someone brushing away a headache.Sarah made a sound that was half laugh, half sob. "She did that when she was nervous. Ever since she was a girl. I used to

Kade's POVNobody in that study said a word for a long moment. Helena, oblivious, turned the little thorned coin over in her fingers like a button she'd found under the sofa.I eased it out of her grip with a smile I didn't feel, promised her a biscuit in exchange, and watched Sarah carry her toward the kitchen wing. Only when the door closed behind them did I let my face change."Sarah said the nursery was locked from the inside," Nora said. Her voice had flattened into the careful register she used when she was holding something enormous at arm's length. "Who has a key?""Three of us." I counted them off. "You, me, and Sarah.""And the lock itself?""Biometric. Palm print, plus a keycode that changes every week." I pulled up the access log on the study terminal, fingers moving faster than my mind could keep pace with. "Torres rebuilt that system after Elias. Nobody gets through it without leaving a trace."The log loaded. Nursery door, 9:04 that morning: Sarah Whitlock, palm verifie

  • My Alpha Rejected Me Then Discovered I was Billionaire Luna   CHAPTER Eighty

Nora's POVI don't remember crossing the clearing. One moment Thorne's words were still ringing against the trees, and the next I was in the passenger seat of Kade's truck with the engine howling and the dashboard clock reading eleven minutes past nine."Seventy minutes if the roads stay clear," Kade said. His knuckles had gone pale on the wheel. "Less if I stop caring about the speed limit.""Stop caring."He did.Behind us, Torres drove the second vehicle with Thorne bound in the back seat. Isadora rode beside him, notebook open on her knees. My father-in-law followed in a third car with Margaret, who had refused, flatly, to stay alone in a farmhouse a stranger had already walked through.Sarah's voice kept coming through the speaker every few minutes, thin but steady. Helena was awake. Helena was eating a banana. Helena wanted to know why everyone kept whispering.I pressed both hands against my knees to stop them shaking.*Helena Voss. The last true heir of the Hollow line.* My mo

  • My Alpha Rejected Me Then Discovered I was Billionaire Luna   CHAPTER Seventy Nine

Kade's POVNobody lowered a weapon, though I noticed Torres's aim drifting between Thorne and the woman at the treeline, unsure which of them deserved it more.Isadora looked thinner than I remembered. Her hair had gone loose from its severe pinning, her coat was dusty at the hem, and she walked toward us with the careful, unhurried steps of someone who knew exactly how this would look."Before anyone does something regrettable," she said, "I'd like to explain why I'm standing here.""Please do," Nora said, her voice cool enough to frost glass."Three weeks ago, a man matching Thorne's description came to the cottage where I've been living. He made me an offer. Take the Patron's seat, or watch Margaret Hollow take it instead, with all the consequences that would bring for a woman who'd never asked for any of it." Isadora's gaze slid to Thorne. "I told him I'd think about it. Then I started following him."Thorne's smile thinned. "Following me. How resourceful.""I learned from the bes

  • My Alpha Rejected Me Then Discovered I was Billionaire Luna   CHAPTER Seventy Eight

Nora's POVHe stood perhaps thirty feet off, hands clasped loosely in front of him, dressed in plain traveling clothes that gave away nothing about who he actually served. No weapon visible. No urgency in his stance at all, as though he'd simply strolled onto the property for a pleasant morning conversation rather than walked into a clearing full of people ready to stop him by force."Stay back," Kade said, voice hard, positioning himself slightly in front of Margaret."I have no intention of coming closer," the man said, something almost amused in his measured tone. "I find conversations go more smoothly without weapons pointed at anyone's chest. Though I imagine you'll keep yours raised regardless.""Who sent you," Torres demanded."Nobody sends me anywhere," the man said. "I serve the Patron directly, same as I have for nearly thirty years. Before that, I served the previous Patron, and before them, the one before that. Loyalty of this particular kind isn't purchased, Alpha Parker.
