Chapter 4

Author: Redleaves
My mother's smile disappeared completely.

I forced down the anger boiling in my chest and walked up to Kellan.

"Why did you bring her?"

Kellan didn't even blink.

"Serena has always admired the Luna of the Blackcliff Pack. She wanted to meet your mother."

"You'd better keep her in line," I said under my breath, staring at him. "Don't let her forget her manners."

My mother glanced at her, her tone even. "And who is she?"

"The woman who saved my life," Kellan answered before I could. "She's also my healer."

Serena bowed to my mother so perfectly that no one could fault her manners.

She and my mother got along well, chatting the entire way.

Slowly, I started to relax.

When the convoy reached the pine forest outside the stronghold, my mother's party turned onto another road.

The manor where she was staying this time was just past the woods.

I stood there and watched my mother's convoy slowly disappear.

Kellan and Serena stood beside me to see her off.

A moment later, three urgent horn blasts sounded in the distance.

A wolf guard dropped to one knee in front of Kellan.

"Alpha, we've spotted signs of more than 20 vampires. They're headed this way!"

Serena went white.

"Leon is still in the stronghold."

She grabbed Kellan's arm, her voice shaking. "Send the wolf guards back to protect him now."

Kellan turned at once.

"Give the order. Pull the—"

"No!"

I cut him off and calmly turned to the wolf guard.

"The White Moon stronghold has three lines of defense. Vampires won't get in that easily."

I pointed in the direction my mother had gone.

"My mother didn't bring many guards this time, and the mountain road is narrow. If those vampires attack her, she won't be able to hold them off for long."

Serena quickly shook her head. "The Blackcliff Luna is the strongest Luna in her pack. How could she not hold them off?"

She looked up at Kellan with red eyes. "Kellan, please, save Leon."

"No, Kellan!" My voice was hard. "Send people to protect my mother!"

Kellan looked at me, then turned to look toward the stronghold.

His wolf guards were inside the stronghold. Leon should have been perfectly safe.

Out on the mountain road, my mother had only a handful of guards. She was the one in real danger.

But the moment Serena started crying, Kellan's hesitation vanished.

The next second, he signaled his personal guards over.

"Give the order. Send every wolf guard with us back to the stronghold to protect Leon."

I stumbled back half a step and stared at him in disbelief.

"The stronghold has three lines of defense, but my mother doesn't have enough backup. And this is your choice?"

He avoided my eyes.

"Your mother is the strongest Luna in the Blackcliff Pack. She can hold out. Leon is just a pup who can't even shift yet."

Excuses. Nothing but excuses.

But I didn't have time to argue with him anymore.

I clenched my jaw and forced the words through my teeth. "Fine. Then we'll go protect my mother ourselves!"

I shifted and took off, but Kellan didn't follow.

I skidded to a stop and looked back.

Serena was clinging to his sleeve with all her strength.

"Kellan, Leon is still in the stronghold. I can't lose him. Please take me back."

Kellan looked down at her, a storm of emotions in his eyes.

Serena turned to me. "Luna, your mother will be fine. I know it. But the Alpha is the only one who can save my son."

Kellan swayed, but he didn't move.

"We're out of time!" I screamed at Kellan. "Come on!"

He was silent for a moment, then said quietly, "I'll take Serena back first, then come right back."

The last thread holding me together finally snapped.

The last bit of warmth in my heart was gone.

I laughed.

There was no warmth in the sound.

I didn't look back again. I raced toward my mother.

By the time I reached the mountain road, the fight was already over.

Black bats were scattering from the trees. My mother lay in the bloodstained snow with her broken moon blade beside her hand.

Her eyes were still open, like she was waiting for me.

I knelt beside her and held her body as it went cold.

In the distance, the vampires' laughter echoed through the valley.

There wasn't a single signal fire burning at the stronghold. Everything was quiet.

I bent down and closed my mother's eyes, her blood soaking my palms.

My grief hardened into cold hatred.

"Don't be afraid, Mother."

I raised my head and looked toward the walls of the White Moon stronghold.

"I'll make him pay for this."

  • My Alpha Shared a Bed with the Woman Who Saved Him, So I Walked Away   Chapter 10

I received a letter from the White Moon Pack begging for help. The letter bore the signatures of all seven elders, and its terms were even more blunt than I'd expected. They promised that if the Blackcliff Pack sent troops to drive back the vampires, the White Moon Pack would hand over half its territory. As if they were worried that wasn't enough, they'd added one more line at the end."Kellan has been removed as Alpha. The White Moon Pack pledges its loyalty to you."When I finished reading, it struck me as ironic. As if Kellan losing his title would give me any satisfaction. But whether he was Alpha or not had nothing to do with me.I had to focus on what was best for the Blackcliff Pack.If we let the vampires grow stronger, the Blackcliff Pack would be the next to face them.Besides, sending troops this time would win us half of White Moon's territory.I talked my father into it and set out with the Blackcliff forces.Three days later, the two armies met head-on.I stood on a high

Kellan's POV:The moment Kellan got back to the White Moon Pack, the Council of Elders stripped him of his title as Alpha.Without Evelyn's support as Luna, he didn't even have the right to remain in the council hall. When the wolf guards dragged him out of the hall, the jeers outside crashed over him."Look, isn't that the shortest-reigning Alpha in White Moon history?""He lost his Luna and the reinforcements over an Omega. Does he even have a brain?""You've ruined the White Moon Pack! You worthless piece of trash!"Every word was like a blade, slicing away the last of his dignity.Kellan kept his head down and hurried away, his fingernails digging into his palms. The shrill jeers rang in his ears, and the wolf inside him grew restless.A violent urge to kill, tangled with regret, rose from deep inside him.His wolf was on the edge of breaking loose.Without thinking, Kellan headed for Serena's clinic. But when he pushed open the door, the place was already half empty.Everything va

On the day of my mother's burial, every Blackcliff war banner was lowered to half-mast.I placed her favorite moon blade in the coffin. The blade had been mended, but the break was still clearly visible.A guard came up behind me and said quietly, "The White Moon Alpha has come to pay his respects and is asking to see you. Serena is with him."My father gazed at my mother for a long time and didn't look up."Take their weapons," I said in a low voice. "Then let them in."Blackcliff warriors stood in formation on both sides of the path to the tomb. When Kellan and Serena walked in, hundreds of long blades lowered in unison. The tension in the air made Serena flinch, and she instinctively grabbed Kellan's arm.Kellan pushed her away immediately. He walked up to the black coffin, stopped short, and looked at me."Evelyn...""If you're here to pay respects, stand over there," I said coldly. "Don't block the funeral procession."He staggered and licked his cracked lips."Come back with me.

[Kellan's POV]The pain from the shattered mate mark hadn't even faded when Kellan forced himself back to his feet.Evelyn had already turned away. The Blackcliff war banners snapped in the wind as the army escorted the black coffin and slowly withdrew north.Evelyn never looked back. She didn't spare him a single glance."Evelyn!"Kellan stumbled a few steps after her.Dozens of Blackcliff warriors blocked his path."Alpha Reed, that's far enough."Kellan kept his eyes locked on Evelyn as she moved farther away. "Out of my way."His only answer was the sound of blades being drawn in perfect unison.Dozens of swords came free of their sheaths at once and crossed before him, blocking his path.Kellan stopped short. All he could do was watch Evelyn and the black coffin disappear at the end of the road.He opened his mouth, but only ragged breaths came out.Evelyn had really left. She wasn't sulking. She wasn't waiting for someone to coax her back. She wasn't going to come home on her own

By the time Kellan found me, I'd already gathered all the Blackcliff reinforcements from the border."Evelyn!"Kellan leaped off his horse and rushed over to me in a few long strides. He grabbed my wrist, his voice urgent. "Where are you going?"I peeled his fingers off one by one. "Back to the Blackcliff Pack."Kellan looked past me at the long lines of soldiers behind me.Something seemed to click, and his face darkened."You're taking all the Blackcliff reinforcements?""Yes.""The Ashford line will be left wide open." He glared at me, unable to hide his anger. "Do you have any idea what that means?""Of course I do.""And you're still taking them?""Kellan," I said, looking up at him, "the Blackcliff warriors stayed because I used to believe you were worth it."Kellan's whole body tensed. He lost control and roared, "You can't leave me! And you can't pull the Blackcliff reinforcements out either!"The full force of his Alpha aura slammed down on me.But the next second, the Blackcl

Kellan's POV:Kellan stood there and watched Evelyn disappear into the thick woods.Without realizing it, he clenched his fists.Beside him, Serena clung tightly to his sleeve."Alpha, hurry. Leon is still in the stronghold."Her voice trembled, and the scent of white roses spread through the air.Kellan looked down at her pale face, and an inexplicable sense of unease stirred in his chest. He made the decision without thinking. This would be the last time. The last time he went against Evelyn's wishes for Serena's sake.Once he knew Leon was safe, his debt to Serena for saving his life would finally be repaid. He closed his eyes for a moment, then swung up onto his horse."Back to the stronghold!"As the horse turned, Kellan looked down the mountain road one more time.It was empty. There was no sign of Evelyn at all. When he got back to the stronghold, everything was perfectly fine. All three lines of defense were untouched, and Leon was in the inner keep playing a stone-tossing game
