Chapter 1

My head spun as I processed what I had just heard.

My bag slipped from my grasp and hit the floor. The medical report inside fluttered down beside it.

Across the living room, candlelight flickered over the table where my boyfriend and my best friend sat together, sharing what looked unmistakably like a romantic dinner.

Ethan Bennett rose calmly from his seat.

"You're home. Why didn't you tell us you were coming back?"

My face went pale. I pressed my lips together and forced myself to speak.

"What were you two talking about?"

Vivian Carter quickly jumped in, changing the subject. "Eve, I won first place in the city competition, so Ethan wanted to celebrate with me. We didn't mean to leave you out. We thought you were working late."

Ethan slipped an arm around my shoulders and guided me toward the table.

"Just give us a heads-up next time you're coming home," he said. "You're making it sound like we deliberately excluded you."

I stared at him as my eyes began to sting. "What about what you two were just saying? Don't you have anything to explain?"

Ethan's expression darkened. "Can you stop overthinking everything?"

Vivian bent down and picked up the medical report. She gave a strained laugh, clearly trying to defuse the situation. "Eve, we were just joking. You didn't seriously take that…"

Then she looked down at the report, and her voice trailed off.

Ethan immediately stepped in. "She's right. You always take things too seriously. Honestly, it's exhausting."

I laughed bitterly. If I hadn't gone to the hospital myself for another test, they would have dismissed everything with a few careless words.

And this wasn't the first time.

Over the past five years, moments like this had happened again and again. Quietly. Subtly. So gradually that I had convinced myself I was imagining things.

A chill crept down my spine.

Ethan glanced at the report in Vivian's hands. His expression changed instantly. For a brief moment, he and Vivian exchanged a look. Then they both turned toward me.

Vivian spoke first. "Eve, it's not that serious. You've always pushed yourself too hard with dancing. We're just worried your body can't handle it anymore."

I stared at her in disbelief.

"You're a dancer too," I said. "You know better than anyone what it takes to succeed. If you want to make a name for yourself, you train until you have nothing left to give."

My voice trembled as the words poured out. "You've spent the last five years doing exactly that. And now you're standing here telling me to take care of my health?

"All these years, while I've been stuck on the sidelines helping you like some idiot… did you enjoy watching me play that role?"

"That's enough, Evelyn!" Ethan's voice cut through the room. "You're going too far."

He stepped in front of Vivian protectively. "For five years, Vivian has been the one holding the company together while you were resting. You don't have to thank her if you don't want to, but you have no right to stand here and put her on trial."

Vivian's face crumpled. Tears welled up in her eyes.

"Eve, you have Ethan. But I have nothing." Her voice was soft and trembling. "I've had to fight for everything I have. How could I possibly afford to stop?"

But what did I have five years ago?

I closed my eyes and slowly let out a breath. Then I opened them. "I'm going back to the dance company."

"No." Ethan didn't hesitate. "Vivian is about to represent the city in an upcoming performance. If you suddenly go back now, it would create a mess."

Tears spilled down Vivian's cheeks.

"Forget it, Ethan," she whispered. "That position was originally Eve's. I'll give it back to her."

Ethan looked at her with unmistakable tenderness.

"Don't say that." His voice softened. "It was always yours."

Something twisted violently inside my chest, and the pain was so sharp it made me nauseous.

Ethan rubbed his temples as though I were the one making everything difficult. "What I mean is, Vivian has put so much into this performance. We can't just let all that effort go to waste."

He turned to me. "Just listen to me, Eve. Stay home. Be my wife. I'll take care of you for the rest of your life."

His next words hit even harder. "We can have a baby, too. You won't feel so alone anymore."

I stared at him. For the first time, I barely recognized the man standing in front of me.

Ethan and I had grown up together. We had been childhood sweethearts.

Ever since I was little, I had dreamed of becoming a professional dancer, and Ethan had always supported that dream.

He used to promise that one day, he would make enough money to build the greatest dance company in the world so I could perform on stages everywhere.

I could still hear his younger voice, full of absolute certainty.

"Eve, you're going to be the greatest dancer in the world."

The memories came rushing back, and my eyes burned.

Something in Ethan's expression softened when he saw the tears gathering in my eyes.

"If you really insist on going back," he said, "then wait until Vivian finishes this performance. After that, I'll send you back to your old company."

My heart sank.

The "old company" he was referring to was nothing more than an abandoned backstage facility. There were no performances, no audience, and no future waiting for me there. It was nothing but a place where I could disappear quietly.

My gaze hardened. "I'm going back to exactly where I was before."

Ethan's expression darkened. "Evelyn, enough is enough."

Beside him, Vivian suddenly began to cry. "Ethan, I'm the one who took Eve's place. That position should have been hers."

The anger immediately disappeared from Ethan's face. He turned to Vivian at once, his voice softening as he comforted her.

I couldn't bear to watch their little performance anymore.

Without another word, I turned and walked back to my room. Then I picked up my phone and called the person in charge of the dance company.

I thought Ethan and I would never have anything to do with each other again. Then, one night after a performance, I ran into him backstage.A staff member stood in his way, blocking him from entering. "Sir, this is a restricted area. Only authorized personnel are allowed backstage."Ethan ignored him and tried to push past. "I'm here to see Evelyn Hayes," he insisted. "I'm her husband!" I frowned and walked over. "What are you doing here?"The moment Ethan saw me, his eyes lit up. He hurried toward me and grabbed my hand. "Eve, I apologized publicly. I cleared up everything about the stand-in dancer, too." His grip tightened as he rushed to explain. "I even transferred Vivian to another branch. She won't bother you again. I swear."He begged, "Please, Eve. Just give me another chance. Come home with me."I yanked my hand free. "Ethan, we're divorced."His expression froze. "You signed the divorce papers yourself. Now that you have time, we can go to the courthouse and ge

When I arrived in Westbridge City, the dance company's manager was waiting at the airport to pick me up personally. His name was Julian Cross. Tall, handsome, and effortlessly polished, he greeted me with an easy smile before opening the car door for me."We've been trying to get you here forever," he said. "I'm just glad we finally managed to bring you on board."I glanced at him curiously. "What if I have a heart condition? Would you still want me here?"Julian laughed softly. "To be honest, I'm a huge fan of yours. With your talent and experience, having you join our company as a master instructor would be an incredible honor." He paused, then gave me a curious look. "But about that 'what if…'" I smiled. "My heart condition was misdiagnosed. There's nothing wrong with me."Julian's eyes lit up immediately, and his smile widened. "Then I just hit the lottery." …After I arrived in Westbridge City, Julian didn't immediately announce that I had joined his company. Instead,

After that, public opinion turned completely against Vivian. The internet erupted with criticism. The backlash grew so vicious that she became afraid to leave her house. Ethan searched everywhere for me, but I was nowhere to be found. Desperate, he even went to my parents' house, only to be turned away without a shred of sympathy. With nowhere else to turn, Ethan returned to his office and called Linda in. "Can you get in touch with Eve?" he asked, his voice hoarse. "I need to apologize to her."Linda hesitated before shaking her head. "Mr. Bennett, I really don't think that's a good idea."Ethan's eyes were bloodshot from days of exhaustion. "I don't have any other choice." Linda sighed. "Eve is incredibly talented, and I understand why you want to find her. But right now, your priority has to be keeping the company running." Ethan said nothing. "Valentine's Day is only a couple of days away," Linda continued carefully. "Why don't you use the occasion to do some damage

Ethan shot to his feet. "What?" he screamed. Linda was confused. "Didn't you say she wasn't allowed back at the dance company?""I said I wouldn't let her come back, but I never said she had to leave. When did this happen?" Ethan questioned. Linda hesitated. "I told you a few days ago. You said, 'Whatever. Don't worry about her.'"She paused, then added carefully, "Don't take this the wrong way, but someone as talented as Eve shouldn't be pushed out of the company. If you really didn't want her dancing here, you could've at least made sure she had somewhere else to go."Ethan fell silent as the memory came back to him. Right. She had told him. But at the time, he'd barely been listening. He'd been too caught up in his vacation with Vivian to give it a second thought.Ethan's face went pale. He immediately pulled out his phone and called my number. The call went straight to an automated message saying my phone was turned off. He tried texting me next, only to realize that I'

  • My Best Friend Danced on My Grave   Chapter 4

Ethan and Vivian flew to Palm Bay for a vacation. Vivian seemed determined to take over everyone's social media feeds with her vacation pictures. In her latest post, she was leaning against Ethan's shoulder, sipping coconut juice with a carefree smile. The caption read, "The boss is paying!"One of our mutual friends commented, "Still calling him 'Boss'? Shouldn't you be calling him something else by now?"Another chimed in, "When are we finally getting those wedding invitations? It's been years."Vivian's reply was deliberately vague. "That's something you'll have to ask the boss about."I blocked and deleted both of them from my social media. Just like that, the world became a little quieter.…"Evelyn, can you teach me that move? I still can't quite get it." The girls were just teenagers. They weren't nearly as complicated as adults. Their admiration was simple and genuine, and with Vivian gone, they naturally gravitated toward me.As we grew closer, they started inviti

Vivian's face fell the moment I finished.I didn't bother waiting for either of them to say anything. I turned and started toward the door."Stay right there." Ethan's cold voice stopped me in my tracks. "Did I say you could leave?"I slowly turned toward him. "You're going to be Vivian's stand-in for next week's performance," he said. "You'll take her place onstage."I stared at him. "She's given so much to this company," Ethan continued, as if he were doing me some great favor. "This is the perfect opportunity for her to take some time off."Vivian let out a soft chuckle. "Ethan, are you sure that's a good idea?"He ignored her. "You wanted a chance to dance, didn't you?" His tone was flat, almost dismissive. "I'm giving you one. So you'd better learn to appreciate it."He looked at me coldly. "Vivian has built a reputation here. Being her stand-in is already an opportunity most dancers would kill for."Something inside me finally broke. Whatever love I still had for Et
