Chapter 2

Author: Oatmeal
I didn't sleep well that night. The video from my future self kept replaying in my head.

I didn't fall asleep until the sun came up.

The Turner family was expecting me the following week.

As soon as I woke up, I booked my flight.

When I came downstairs, Charles and Susie were sitting in my living room.

They were talking and laughing.

Susie casually helped herself to some cookies from the pantry.

When they saw I was up, neither of them batted an eye. Susie even frowned at the cookies. "These don't taste good."

Charles grinned. "If you don't want them, give them here."

They acted like it was their own house, like I wasn't even there.

Once they were done debating the cookies, I went to the dining room, poured myself a glass of water, and sat down on the couch.

Out of nowhere, Susie asked, "When did you get up?"

Charles glanced at his watch. "You got up later than usual today. What are we going to do with you if you keep being this lazy?"

Susie laughed out loud.

I just watched them, my expression blank.

When I didn't laugh, Susie's smile slowly faded. "Selena, what's wrong?"

"Nothing. I'm just a little tired," I said coolly.

And I really was tired. Trying to keep this friendship going had worn me out.

They didn't ask anything else.

Charles said, "We'll skip the pool hall, then."

I didn't say anything. I just turned and went back upstairs.

They didn't come after me. Their attention had already drifted back to the cookies. Not ready to give up, Susie went digging through the pantry for other snacks.

Back in my room, I started packing.

I didn't come back down until dinner.

Of course, they stayed for dinner that night too.

At the table, Susie and Charles talked about their plans. Their parents had already sold their houses on Staten Island and were moving straight to Boston.

Mom said, "Once the transfers are confirmed and Selena's assigned to the Boston arms route, we'll move there too."

"That's perfect. The three of us will always be together," Susie said.

She smiled, but the food in her hand never made it to her mouth.

Even after dinner, neither of them showed any sign of leaving.

They sat in the living room chatting with my parents while I sat off to the side without saying a word.

They talked about everything they'd accomplished and everything they planned to do.

Partway through, Susie glanced at me and abruptly changed the subject.

"Did you guys hear what happened in one of the other families? Their little princess thought growing up with another family's heir gave her some kind of claim on him. But he loved someone else. They were the ones who belonged together.

"When the princess took over her family's business, the heir sabotaged her work so he could be with his true love. Because of him, she botched a shipment and fell out of favor with her family. No one had her back anymore, and the heir got to be with his true love.

"Selena, have you heard that one?"

Suddenly Susie was looking right at me.

My breathing slowed. I slowly met her eyes.

After a long moment, I said, "I think the heir and his true love are a couple of scumbags. They screwed that princess over."

The second I finished, Susie's expression froze.

I gave a slow smile. "Scumbags like that should stay together forever, so they can't screw anyone else over.

"The princess should just find the proof and have her father shoot those two pieces of trash dead."

I looked at Charles. "Don't you think?"

Charles didn't look much better than Susie did.

He stood up, breathing hard, and forced a smile at my mother. "We should get going. It's getting late."

I didn't look at either of them again. They hurried out of my house, one practically dragging the other along.

The living room finally felt less stifling once they were gone.

That night, Charles texted me.

"Did you submit your transfer request?"

"Did you confirm your request, Selena?"

I didn't answer. After I showered and got into bed, he sent two more.

"Selena?"

"Did you confirm it or not?"

I texted back, "Is there a problem?"

Charles replied, "Just asking."

I didn't answer him again. I turned off my phone and went to sleep.

I listened quietly and let him say everything he had to say.I said slowly, "But I'm the Turner family's underboss now. And this is your fault, not mine."You're the one who caused all of this."I don't want to hear your voice. You make me sick."When I finished, Charles's broken, ragged scream came through the phone. "Selena!"I didn't wait to hear the rest. I hung up.Once the call was over, I slowly began to relax. I felt lighter than ever. That day, I met with the arms dealers from Southeast Asia as planned.I used the negotiating strategy I'd worked out with the others in the Turner family. It all went smoothly. They signed the contract without a second thought. The moment I had the contract in hand, I knew Charles had failed the Caruso family's test. He couldn't even hold on to one arms route. From then on, there would be no place for him in the Caruso family. After that, I spent my time traveling all over the world for work. I barely made it home anymore. Most of the time, Julia

I didn't hide anything from Marco. I told him exactly what had happened, from start to finish. He offered me a better deal. But nothing he could offer tempted me anymore.I felt at home with the Turner family because their businesses were slowly going legit. Running the Boston arms route, on the other hand, would mean staying in the criminal underworld.Charles was the one who'd wanted Boston. That was the only reason I'd ever wanted it too.The truth was, I'd never liked living on a knife's edge. After meeting with Marco, I wrapped up my work in Boston and went back. The day I got back to the Turner family's headquarters, everyone had gathered in the council hall to discuss taking over the Boston arms route.Charles was the only one running that route now.Honestly, taking it over would be easy. The Turner family was now the biggest mafia family in the world, and its power reached every corner of the globe.Boston was the one place we hadn't expanded into yet.I signed off on the plan

In a black suit jacket, Charles looked clean-cut and more mature than before. We'd only been apart six months, but there was a new sadness in his eyes.I looked at him without saying a word.He spoke first. "Long time no see, Selena. Do you have a minute? I want to talk to you."I didn't answer. He came closer, watching my face carefully. After a long moment, he spoke again, his voice rough. "I knew you were coming to meet Marco today, so I got here early to wait for you.""What for?""He wants to see you... If I had to guess, he's going to try to talk you into working for our family. After all, that whole thing online blew up in a big way."And..." He went quiet for a second. "And Susie's assignment was revoked."So that was why her name hadn't come up.I looked at him. "So what do you want to talk about?"I had a pretty good idea already. Charles kept his head down, like he was working out what to say."I want you to tell Marco that everything online was fake. That we were just messi

Charles's mother, Diane Romano, stood in front of the others. Her eyes were red, and her shawl hung crooked on her shoulders. The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with tears again. She covered her mouth and started to cry.Behind her, Charles stood with his head down."Selena, I'm sorry," Diane said, her voice shaking. She bowed her head, her shoulders trembling.I looked at my mother, and she pulled me behind her.She looked furious. "What's done is done. There's no need to apologize. An apology won't change anything. Thank God my daughter withdrew that request."Diane turned on her son. "Apologize to Selena!"You almost ruined her whole life!"She broke down and screamed until her voice went hoarse. "Selena, he just doesn't know any better. Please don't hold it against him, okay? I'm begging you."Watching her, I softened a little.Diane had always been incredibly good to me. The year I turned 18, I lost my handgun and cried as I searched the garden for it.To cheer me up, she boug

Almost everyone in the Caruso family had heard by now.So had our old classmates. Suddenly, everyone was talking. Before this, everyone had heard that my request had been changed and I hadn't fixed it in time, so I'd be stuck on the docks for life. Now a completely different story was going around.Naturally, I was at the center of it all.Under the Turner family's post about me, Susie and Charles were the ones getting tagged the most.Everyone was waiting to see how they'd react. But before long, Charles deleted the post he'd shared.A few seconds later, Susie deleted hers too.Just like that, the whole thing exploded online.By the time I found out about any of this, I was already with the Turner family.First, I was taken to the office to meet Julian Turner, the Don of the Turner family. I didn't know why, but I was on edge the whole way there. Then I saw him, and for a few seconds I just stared. He was young and handsome, with an intense, expressive gaze. When he saw me, he smiled.

We'd already left the party and gotten into the car.Only then did Charles come running out and start pounding on the window."Selena, get out of the car. Let's talk."Come on, get out. It was just a joke. Is it really that big a deal? What did you mean back there? Are you threatening Susie?!"Get out right now and apologize to her, and I'll act like none of this ever happened."I didn't spare him a single glance. I spoke only to the driver. "Drive."The driver floored it, leaving Charles standing behind us.In the car, my mother didn't ask a single question. She just held my hand tight. "Don't worry," I told her. "I'm okay."I smiled at her, trying hard to act like nothing was wrong. But beneath it all, a deep hatred was beginning to burn. We'd barely gotten home when Charles's texts started coming in, one after another."Selena, what you said scared Susie.""She's still crying. Is this what it takes to make you happy? What is your problem?!"I read them and didn't answer. Then I bloc
