Chapter 3

Author: Oatmeal
The transfer assignments hadn't been announced yet.

But the older members of the Caruso family threw us a party to celebrate early. I had a little red wine, then sat in a corner scrolling through my phone.

The older members gathered together to talk about their children's plans.

The whole place was buzzing.

A little later, one of the older members suddenly turned to my mother. "If I remember right, all three of them applied for the Boston arms route, didn't they?"

They meant Charles, Susie, and me.

Another older member said, "Susie's been clever since she was little. Those kids are going to make it into the inner circle for sure."

The praise made Susie duck shyly behind Charles.

Charles smiled too, then turned and ruffled her hair.

Susie said, "Oh, I'm not that great.

"As long as I'm with Charles, I don't care where I apply.

"I'd miss my boyfriend too much if we were apart."

The words were barely out of her mouth before everyone's eyes went wide.

Someone started whooping. "You two are together?!"

"I always said those two looked perfect together!"

"When did this happen? How did nobody know?"

One of the older members even clapped Susie's father on the shoulder. "Charles is a fine young man. Susie's going to be very happy. With the two of them going to Boston together, you've got nothing to worry about."

Everyone was so caught up in the news that no one paid any attention to me.

Only my mother gave me a long, searching look.

The girl next to me laughed. "Now they can both look after Selena."

Susie, who'd been quiet during the congratulations, spoke up. "We'd love to look after Selena, but she's staying here. She applied for the job at the local docks."

Her words hung in the air.

Every eye in the room turned to me.

I'd beaten Charles when it came to trophies and certificates, and later on I'd left Susie in the dust too.

I'd once smuggled a shipment of drugs from Boston to Staten Island all by myself.

I'd gotten it past every inspection and mapped out a brand-new route while I was at it.

Everyone had assumed I'd apply for the Boston job and go on to bigger things.

Susie's news stunned the whole room.

I let out a short, cold laugh and looked at her like none of it mattered to me.

"As far as I remember, I applied for the Boston arms route too."

Susie laughed even louder. She shrugged and glanced at Charles.

"It was just a joke. But we never thought you'd actually submit it without checking.

"Charles and I were betting on how long it would take you to notice.

"But you... you were actually that careless.

"It's a good thing we played that joke on you. Otherwise, we never would've found out how careless you are. If you'd actually gone to Boston and taken over the arms route, your carelessness would've caused a disaster."

She hooked her arm through Charles's. "Don't you think?"

Charles hurriedly looked away. He lowered his head, biting his lip, and said nothing.

They'd done something disgusting, yet they talked as if they had nothing to be ashamed of. They thought calling it a joke would make it all go away.

"Charles, you knew about this too?"

I looked at him and waited for an answer.

Charles kept his head down for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter. "It really was just a joke. I thought you'd check.

"I didn't think you'd be this careless. You didn't even check."

My heart sank. He was blaming me for his own actions, as if it were all my fault for not checking.

It felt like I was meeting him for the first time.

This wasn't the Charles I knew.

I didn't say anything else.

My mother stepped in front of me. Without a second's hesitation, she slapped Charles across the face. "How could you play a joke like that?!

"What did my daughter ever do to you?!

"You're trying to ruin her life!"

She was furious. Ignoring the stares around us, she raised her hand to hit him again, but Charles's father, Frank Romano, stopped her before she could.

"It was just a joke! Is it really that big a deal?!"

Frank gave me an icy look. "All right, Selena, you calm down too—"

Before he could finish, I cut him off, my eyes on Susie. "I'll make sure you die. Charles too."

I gave a small smile, then took Mom by the hand and walked out.

I listened quietly and let him say everything he had to say.I said slowly, "But I'm the Turner family's underboss now. And this is your fault, not mine."You're the one who caused all of this."I don't want to hear your voice. You make me sick."When I finished, Charles's broken, ragged scream came through the phone. "Selena!"I didn't wait to hear the rest. I hung up.Once the call was over, I slowly began to relax. I felt lighter than ever. That day, I met with the arms dealers from Southeast Asia as planned.I used the negotiating strategy I'd worked out with the others in the Turner family. It all went smoothly. They signed the contract without a second thought. The moment I had the contract in hand, I knew Charles had failed the Caruso family's test. He couldn't even hold on to one arms route. From then on, there would be no place for him in the Caruso family. After that, I spent my time traveling all over the world for work. I barely made it home anymore. Most of the time, Julia

I didn't hide anything from Marco. I told him exactly what had happened, from start to finish. He offered me a better deal. But nothing he could offer tempted me anymore.I felt at home with the Turner family because their businesses were slowly going legit. Running the Boston arms route, on the other hand, would mean staying in the criminal underworld.Charles was the one who'd wanted Boston. That was the only reason I'd ever wanted it too.The truth was, I'd never liked living on a knife's edge. After meeting with Marco, I wrapped up my work in Boston and went back. The day I got back to the Turner family's headquarters, everyone had gathered in the council hall to discuss taking over the Boston arms route.Charles was the only one running that route now.Honestly, taking it over would be easy. The Turner family was now the biggest mafia family in the world, and its power reached every corner of the globe.Boston was the one place we hadn't expanded into yet.I signed off on the plan

In a black suit jacket, Charles looked clean-cut and more mature than before. We'd only been apart six months, but there was a new sadness in his eyes.I looked at him without saying a word.He spoke first. "Long time no see, Selena. Do you have a minute? I want to talk to you."I didn't answer. He came closer, watching my face carefully. After a long moment, he spoke again, his voice rough. "I knew you were coming to meet Marco today, so I got here early to wait for you.""What for?""He wants to see you... If I had to guess, he's going to try to talk you into working for our family. After all, that whole thing online blew up in a big way."And..." He went quiet for a second. "And Susie's assignment was revoked."So that was why her name hadn't come up.I looked at him. "So what do you want to talk about?"I had a pretty good idea already. Charles kept his head down, like he was working out what to say."I want you to tell Marco that everything online was fake. That we were just messi

Charles's mother, Diane Romano, stood in front of the others. Her eyes were red, and her shawl hung crooked on her shoulders. The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with tears again. She covered her mouth and started to cry.Behind her, Charles stood with his head down."Selena, I'm sorry," Diane said, her voice shaking. She bowed her head, her shoulders trembling.I looked at my mother, and she pulled me behind her.She looked furious. "What's done is done. There's no need to apologize. An apology won't change anything. Thank God my daughter withdrew that request."Diane turned on her son. "Apologize to Selena!"You almost ruined her whole life!"She broke down and screamed until her voice went hoarse. "Selena, he just doesn't know any better. Please don't hold it against him, okay? I'm begging you."Watching her, I softened a little.Diane had always been incredibly good to me. The year I turned 18, I lost my handgun and cried as I searched the garden for it.To cheer me up, she boug

Almost everyone in the Caruso family had heard by now.So had our old classmates. Suddenly, everyone was talking. Before this, everyone had heard that my request had been changed and I hadn't fixed it in time, so I'd be stuck on the docks for life. Now a completely different story was going around.Naturally, I was at the center of it all.Under the Turner family's post about me, Susie and Charles were the ones getting tagged the most.Everyone was waiting to see how they'd react. But before long, Charles deleted the post he'd shared.A few seconds later, Susie deleted hers too.Just like that, the whole thing exploded online.By the time I found out about any of this, I was already with the Turner family.First, I was taken to the office to meet Julian Turner, the Don of the Turner family. I didn't know why, but I was on edge the whole way there. Then I saw him, and for a few seconds I just stared. He was young and handsome, with an intense, expressive gaze. When he saw me, he smiled.

We'd already left the party and gotten into the car.Only then did Charles come running out and start pounding on the window."Selena, get out of the car. Let's talk."Come on, get out. It was just a joke. Is it really that big a deal? What did you mean back there? Are you threatening Susie?!"Get out right now and apologize to her, and I'll act like none of this ever happened."I didn't spare him a single glance. I spoke only to the driver. "Drive."The driver floored it, leaving Charles standing behind us.In the car, my mother didn't ask a single question. She just held my hand tight. "Don't worry," I told her. "I'm okay."I smiled at her, trying hard to act like nothing was wrong. But beneath it all, a deep hatred was beginning to burn. We'd barely gotten home when Charles's texts started coming in, one after another."Selena, what you said scared Susie.""She's still crying. Is this what it takes to make you happy? What is your problem?!"I read them and didn't answer. Then I bloc
