Chapter 8

Author: Perfect Timing
Fortunately, I didn't die.

My front door hadn't been fully latched, and the neighbor happened to hear Lauren's hysterical laughter from the hallway. That was the only reason I was saved in time.

I spent a few days recovering in the hospital before being discharged.

As for Lauren, she was held in the prison's medical ward.

I went to visit her.

The moment she saw me, she snarled and cursed.

"So close… I was so close! I almost had it!

"Jen, why does the universe favor you? Why wasn't it you who died?! You're the one who deserves to die! You should be the one with organ failure!"

Listening to her rant, I could only see how utterly pathetic she had become.

I met her gaze. "You did this to yourself, Lauren. It was your own greed that let the system control you."

The moment she heard the word "system," her eyes flickered with a frantic hope—a final lifeline. But when she realized the word had come from my mouth, she froze.

"You… you know about the system?"

After dealing with that mess, I actually enjoyed a brief period of peace.I heard that Lauren kept clinging to Zach, but he threw her out on the spot. Their scandal spread through the company, and the management promptly fired Zach.I treated it all like a joke. What I didn't expect was for Lauren to come looking for me.She knelt at my door, begging for forgiveness."Jen, we've been best friends for so many years. Can you give me one more chance?"Sisterhood over men! Jen, please forgive me, just this once!"…Day after day, she used every sweet word she could think of, even camping outside my door. Every night, even through the closed door, I could hear her muttering to herself. When I pressed my ear closer, I realized she was talking to her system. She thought I didn't know. She was still scheming, still trying to find a way to exchange weight with me.Then one night, in the middle of the night, she coughed up blood and fainted right outside my door.A neighbor found her

Hearing his words, Lauren stared at Zach in disbelief, her eyes full of hurt."You told me if Jen couldn't lose weight, you would marry me!" she protested.Zach scoffed. "Look at yourself. Who wouldn't feel sick just seeing you?"He tilted a bottle of beer and poured it right in front of her."Open those eyes of yours and take a good look. What kind of desperate idiot would be interested in a freak like you?"Lauren didn't dare glance at her reflection in the spilled beer. She could only babble excuses."This is just an accident. It'll get better. In a few days, I'll go back to normal—Zach, you have to believe me!"She crawled toward him, reaching for the hem of his pants, but he kicked her aside without hesitation. Then she had to watch, helpless and humiliated, as Zach turned to me, begging for forgiveness."Jen, I was confused for a moment. Please forgive me just this once! How could I possibly like that ugly monster? What happened just now was just a wedding prank!"Zach

"Ghost! There's a ghost!"Lauren hobbled into the room in her bridesmaid dress, limping in crooked circles. She was nothing but skin stretched over bones, her eyes bulging like brass bells, her hair fallen out until she looked half-bald. Her clothes hung off her like old rags. At this point, she looked more terrifying than a mummy.Weakly, she reached a skeletal hand toward Zach. "Zach… Zach, I'm here."But Zach collapsed to the floor in fright, eyes wide as saucers. "You—how did you turn into… this thing? You look neither human nor ghost!"He couldn't believe the shriveled scarecrow in front of him was the same seductive Lauren who had flirted with him just two weeks ago.Step by step, Lauren shuffled toward him. From her bony fingers, she pulled out a man's ring and lifted it toward him as if to slip it onto his hand."Zach, I knew you would choose me. We're going to be together forever."But the moment Zach's fingers brushed her wrinkled, papery skin, he recoiled instinctivel

A few days later, a video popped up on my phone. It was filmed in my bedroom.Lauren sat straddling Zach's waist, dressed in the cosplay outfit he loved most. Her eyes sparkled as she spoke in a soft, flirtatious voice."Zach, don't you just want to nibble at my collarbone?"In the video, she looked much thinner—exactly the type Zach preferred. And just as she intended, Zach leaned in and bit down on her collarbone. She let out a satisfied, breathy laugh."Zach," she giggled, "what if Jen fails to slim down? What should we do?"With his face buried in her neck, he mumbled absentmindedly, "I gave her a chance. If she can't manage, I'll just switch brides.""Oh? And who would be the most suitable replacement?"Zach naturally heard the implication in her voice. He laughed, flipped her beneath him, and growled, "If Jen fails, then I'll just pick you, little temptress."They rolled around wildly in my room.Watching them fornicate in my space, I felt no anger at all. I simply at

The very night I signed up, Zach and Lauren practically threw my bags into the car and drove me straight to the weight-loss bootcamp's campus. They called it "eliminating distractions" so I could "focus on my mission."While I sweated through brutal workouts each day, Zach spent his evenings "unwinding" at sketchy massage parlors. He'd text me graphic details—rating the women's bodies or their "special services"—and claim it was all to "light a fire under me" to get thin.It was repulsive. Looking back, I couldn't fathom how I'd ever been blind enough to love him.Thankfully, a whole lifetime of hindsight had cured me of that delusion. His words rolled off me now like water off wax.Meanwhile, Lauren dedicated her days to curating a private show just for me. She'd post story after story on Instagram—juicy burgers, loaded cheese fries, decadent milkshakes—each one carefully tagged "Close Friends" so only I could see. When mutual friends commented with concern, asking if she'd get si
