Chapter 1

Graham's POV

My girlfriend, Natasha Bishop, helped my best friend, Devon Hart, into the front passenger seat first, her movements practiced and natural. When she came back for me, I cracked my eyes open.

"Natasha, why'd you help him first?"

She paused and glanced down at me. "He's way more wasted than you are. You can stretch out in the back. It'll be more comfortable."

I nodded. Her logic made sense. But for some reason, it still stung.

I dropped my gaze, pretending the alcohol was hitting harder, and pulled her into a tight hug. "Natasha."

She looked up at me. "Yeah?"

"If you ever cheat on me, I'll kill the guy."

She laughed softly, like humoring a drunk who was being dramatic. "Then I'd rather you didn't. You'd end up straight in prison. I still want you around for the rest of my life."

I didn't say anything. I just closed my eyes, my throat so tight it ached.

When the car neared an intersection, someone darted across the road, and Natasha slammed on the brakes. My forehead slammed against the back of the front seat, hard enough that everything went dark for a second.

Her arm shot out instinctively to brace Devon. Only after he was steady did she glance up at me through the rearview mirror.

I squeezed my eyes shut, not even brave enough to figure out whether she was worried about me or just making sure I was still asleep.

By the time I came to, the car was parked outside Devon's apartment complex.

Natasha got out and helped him out of the passenger side. I pushed my door open and trailed behind them.

The hallway was quiet, nothing but our footsteps echoing off the walls. I kept a few paces back, telling myself over and over that I was reading too much into things.

Then Natasha pressed her finger to the smart lock, and it beeped open.

I froze.

Devon leaned down and kissed her. The two of them stumbled backward into the apartment, tangled together. I didn't need to see anything else.

Through the half-open door, Natasha finally looked up.

Something snapped the second she saw me, and she shoved Devon away. "He's drunk. I was just helping him inside for you."

My eyes drifted to the smart lock. "And the fingerprint? Was that for my sake too?"

She went quiet for a beat. "A client switched up a wedding order. I had to drop off samples at his place a few times."

"And the kissing? Was that part of the job deion?"

Devon cut in, panicked. "Graham, don't take it out on her. This was all my—"

"Since when, Devon? Since when do you get to speak for my girlfriend?"

Natasha reached back and pulled Devon behind her. "Enough. This has nothing to do with him."

I looked at her and nodded slowly. "Right. It's got nothing to do with him. I shouldn't have followed you up here, shouldn't have seen any of it, and shouldn't have asked."

Panic flickered across her face. "That's not what I meant."

"I've been making excuses for you the whole way here," I said, shaking my head. "I'm done lying to myself. We're over."

I turned and walked away. Quick footsteps echoed behind me, and Natasha grabbed my wrist, her palm burning hot.

"Graham, don't say things you don't mean. We've been together eight years, not eight days," she said. "The wedding attire's picked out, and the venue's paid for. The wedding is in three days. You were up until dawn last night editing our wedding video."

I stopped.

That video was a surprise I'd been putting together for months, going to all the places that mattered to us and secretly filming clips.

From our old campus to street corners, from snow-covered fields to the beach, eight years pieced together one frame at a time.

My throat tightened.

For a second, I almost asked her, "Natasha, can you end things with Devon? Right now, right here, can you just end it?"

But before I could get the words out, Devon's voice came from inside the apartment. "Natasha… I…"

She let go of me. "His stomach's probably bothering him. Let me go check on him."

She took two steps toward his apartment, then turned back and grabbed my hand, like she was afraid I might actually leave. "Graham, wait for me downstairs. We'll talk as soon as I'm done here."

Graham's POVNatasha was awake when I walked into her hospital room. I'd been sitting outside her room. The doctor said her injuries weren't minor, but she wasn't in danger. A quiet sigh of relief had escaped me then, not because I still loved her, but because she really did save me this time. She lay in the hospital bed with gauze wrapped around her temple, her face drained of all color. The moment she saw me, her eyes lit up."Graham." Her voice was raw, like she was afraid I'd vanish the second she spoke.I walked to the side of the bed and handed her water. "The doctor said you'd be fine once you woke up."She didn't take it. She just stared at me. "Graham, can we start over?"I looked at her and shook my head gently. "Natasha, we're even now. You saved me once. But that doesn't cancel out every choice you made before."She tried to push herself upright, but the movement pulled at her wounds, drawing sweat to her forehead. "Graham, I know I was wrong. I won't make you wait

Graham's POVBefore I could say anything, a voice came from behind me."Graham, who's this?"Margot walked over, carrying a bundle of eucalyptus, and gave Natasha a quick once-over. I took the supplies from her and kept my tone even. "My ex."Natasha's expression shifted immediately.Margot raised an eyebrow and said in her halting, accented way, "Ex-girlfriend? A guy as great as you, and she let you go?"She glanced back at Natasha with a polite smile. "Her loss, if you ask me."Natasha's gaze dropped to the hand Margot used to pass me the flowers, and her voice went low. "Who is she?"I didn't answer. She took another step closer, barely containing herself. "Graham, did you leave me for her?"The second the words left her mouth, she seemed to realize what she'd said. But I just laughed."Natasha, what right do you have to ask me that? "I wasn't the one kissing someone else three days before the wedding. "I wasn't the one saying I love you while protecting another pe

Graham's POVThree days after arriving in Valcourt, I officially started my classes. I thought I'd have a hard time adjusting to the unfamiliar language and streets and classrooms, but the teachers were patient enough to let me finish my sentences and the other students went out of their way to say hello. No one treated me like a man who was too clumsy for floral work, and no one told me to stop chasing things now that I was supposed to be married.Morning sunlight fell across the glass windows of the studio, and as I trimmed a white rose, it hit me that the world hadn't actually ended when I left Natasha. After class, I walked out of the building with an armful of supplies and found Devon standing by the entrance. He wore a dark jacket and looked far more haggard than the last time I saw him. When he spotted me, he took a step forward, then stopped himself."Graham."I stood still. I wasn't surprised he'd tracked me down. We'd grown up together, after all. He knew what I lov

Third-Person POVNatasha opened the group chat. It had already blown up.Someone had posted the surveillance footage from yesterday's wedding. In the video, Devon waited until no one was looking, then slipped a gardenia into the bouquet.Right after that came the delivery photos from Graham's studio. The bouquet in the pictures didn't have any gardenia.Someone in the chat asked, "So Graham was innocent this whole time?"Another message followed. "Didn't he get hurt last night too? And Natasha was with Devon the entire time?"Natasha's vision went dark.By the time she rushed to the office, people were already crowded outside the conference room. Inside, the bride's father was slamming the table."My daughter is still under observation at the hospital. Whoever put the gardenia in that bouquet needs to step up and take responsibility."Devon sat in the corner, ashen-faced. The moment he saw Natasha, he jumped to his feet, looking at her like she was his lifeline."Natasha,

Third-Person POVAt four in the morning on the day of the wedding, Natasha was already in her gown, the one Graham picked out himself. The day they'd found it, he stood behind her at the mirror, smiling as he smoothed the veil. "Natasha, when you marry me, you have to wear this one."Now, she looked at herself in the mirror and ran her fingers along the edge of the veil. She then picked up her phone. The chat was still open to last night's message."Graham, I'll be waiting for you to come get me in the morning."He didn't reply. She frowned, but thought it was nothing. He was still upset. Once the wedding was over, she'd talk him down the way she always did.Yet as the sun began to shine brighter outside, the silence from her phone started to feel wrong. She dialed the driver handling the wedding car, and the voice on the other end hesitated."Ms. Bishop, the car was canceled yesterday afternoon."Natasha went still. "What?""Mr. Dawes canceled it himself. He said the wedding

Graham's POVDevon froze, the color draining from his face. "Graham, I know you hate me. But the client's innocent. You could at least keep this separate from work."Natasha frowned at me. "Graham, I never thought you'd stoop this low."I gave her a thin smile and stared right back at her. "That makes two of us."Natasha blinked, clearly not expecting me to humiliate her in front of everyone. She lowered her voice and leaned in. "Graham, now's not the time to be petty. Go apologize to the client."Devon chimed in beside her, every word carefully clearing himself of blame. "Graham, the bride's still in the lounge. Just go talk to her."They made it look like they were trying to help me, but every sentence was an admission of guilt on my behalf. The groom had completely lost his composure. He pointed at us and snapped, "Is this how you people do your jobs? Falling over each other to take credit when things go right, and pointing fingers the second something goes wrong?"The fam
