Chapter 6

ผู้เขียน: Zoe bear
I didn’t cry.

Didn’t scream.

Didn’t shift into my wolf and go on a well-deserved rampage through the house.

Instead, I packed.

Clothes, shoes, books—anything that I could shove into my suitcase. My wolf huffed in the back of my mind as I tossed out anything that carried even a whiff of Beta Max’s scent. The pretty dress I wore on our first date? Trash. The necklace he gave me last year? Trash. That expensive candle he once said "smelled like me"? Oh, definitely trash.

I didn’t want any trace of him in my life.

Before I left, I made one final call—to a real estate agent.

This house had been a gift from Grandpa, originally meant to be my wedding home. Now, it was nothing but a haunted museum of bad decisions and shattered dreams.

I didn’t hesitate. List it. Sell it. I don’t care who buys it—just get it out of my name.

That night, I checked into a hotel.

Tomorrow, I would go to Grandpa.

Where I should have been all along.

I called Alpha David first thing in the morning.

Because if I had to be awake and dealing with the wreckage of my love life, then so did he.

"Mmph?" His voice was barely human when he answered.

"Get up. I need you."

"Louis… it's the middle of the night—"

"It’s six-thirty."

"Exactly. The middle of the night."

I rolled my eyes and dialed my best friend. She had no patience for sleepy alphas and no issue dumping a bucket of ice water over David’s head if needed. Five minutes later, he called back—very much awake and very much unhappy about it.

"You are evil," he muttered.

"You love me."

"Questionable."

"You owe me."

"Fine. What do you need?"

"A fake husband."

Beat of silence.

"…Excuse me?"

---

David and I put together a quick cover story on the way to the hospital.

Because here was the problem—Grandpa knew about Max. He knew I was supposed to marry him. And I refused to let him waste his precious energy worrying about me.

So David, agreed to play along.

What I didn’t expect… was that Grandpa actually liked him.

Not just tolerated him.

Liked him.

The two of them hit it off instantly, reminiscing about the "old days"—back when packs were built on grit and claw, not politics and social media. They swapped war stories, debated training tactics, and discussed pack management like they were long-lost brothers.

By the time we were leaving, Grandpa looked downright reluctant to let us go.

He took my hand in his weathered one, giving it a gentle pat. "Louis, this one's good. Much more dependable than Max ever was."

I froze.

Oh, Moon above.

I forced a smile. "Grandpa, maybe you're just confused. This is Max."

Grandpa leveled me with the kind of look only an elder wolf could master—the kind that stripped away all my nonsense in a single second.

"Your grandpa may be old, but I’m not senile." His tone was firm. "I know who’s who. The only thing I don’t know is whether I’ll still be here when you finally hold that wedding banquet…"

Cue instant panic.

Before I could think it through, I yanked open my bag and pulled out the marriage certificate David and I had signed in a moment of sleep-deprived insanity.

"Don’t worry, Grandpa—we’re already married. The wedding banquet’s in the works. You’ll be there, I promise."

Grandpa squinted at the certificate through his magnifying glass.

A long, excruciating moment passed.

Then, he nodded with satisfaction. "Just as I thought. Not that Max brat. His name is David, isn’t it? Now that’s a strong name."

I rolled my eyes and quickly excused myself before he could start picking out baby names.

Out in the hallway, David was waiting for me—

And judging by his scowl, he had just had an argument with someone.

The client who came to view the house was very decisive—after seeing it, they immediately paid the deposit. As I walked out of the neighborhood, I ran into Beta Max and Grace sitting by the roadside, both looking miserable.Grace was sniffling hard enough to fog up her compact mirror. “Where are we gonna sleep tonight, Mal? I can't go back to my mom's. She thinks you're a deadbeat.”I mean, she wasn’t wrong.Max was puffing on a cigarette like he was trying to smoke away the shame. But the second he saw me, he tossed it aside and launched himself at me like a rogue wolf sensing a last chance at redemption. He grabbed the hem of my coat, his voice all wobbly.“Louis, you can’t treat me like this! After everything we’ve been through—how can you just walk away like it meant nothing?!”I stared at him, unimpressed. My wolf snorted in the back of my mind. Is he seriously still pulling the wounded-pup act?I raised an eyebrow. “Your little sweetheart is right here. You’d better stay away fro

Beta Max’s call came not long after. I’d just finished a run in my wolf form—needed the fresh air to cool off my temper .My wolf let out a low growl the second his name popped up on the screen.“Don’t answer it,” she warned.“I have to,” I muttered. “I need to hear just how far this idiot plans to take it.”I swiped to answer.“Louis, you regret it now, don’t you? If you come back to me, we can still be as happy as we were before.”I blinked. Was this man serious?“I won’t even hold it against you that you got married. As long as you come back, I’ll go online right now and tell everyone you’ve realized your mistake and returned to me!”Oh. So now I was supposed to crawl back, wag my tail, and thank him for dragging my name through the mud?“You’re disgusting,” I snapped. “I gave you seven chances to mark and mate me, and you blew every single one. You picked your little childhood sweetheart, remember? I’m just doing you a favor.”He sputtered. I didn’t let him get a word in.“Don’t wo

Every time I stepped outside, I could feel it—the weight of a hundred stares pressing down on me, the hushed whispers that weren’t so hushed. My wolf bristled under my skin, ears practically twitching with every not-so-subtle comment thrown my way.By the time I got back to the packhouse, the Silver Claw elders were already waiting, sitting in their usual semi-circle like a tribunal of judgmental grandpas."Louis," Elder Marcus started, steepling his fingers like he was about to hand down a life sentence. "Perhaps it would be... wise to be more mindful of your actions."The other elders nodded in solemn agreement, like I was some reckless pup caught chewing up the furniture.Mindful? Of what exactly?I frowned. "Did I miss an emergency decree banning grocery runs? Or do I need the council's approval before stepping outside?"They exchanged glances, their expressions screaming she doesn’t know.I was really starting to hate that look. So, the moment I got back to my apartment, I pulled

Just as I was about to open my mouth and tell Beta Max to get lost, the low growl of an approaching engine interrupted us.A sleek black sedan pulled up beside us. The moment the car stopped, the door swung open, and out stepped Alpha David, looking every bit the overprotective mate he thought he was. Before I could blink, he pulled me against his broad chest, his scent—pine, smoke, and something undeniably dominant—flooding my senses.“My wife doesn’t need you to protect her,” he said, voice dripping with authority. “And for the record, Grandpa didn’t like you—he liked me.”His tone was casual, but the way he held me screamed territorial.I felt his wolf’s energy pressing against mine, a silent but clear message: Mine. Stay back.Beta Max’s face twisted like he’d swallowed a mouthful of wolfsbane. His jaw clenched, and his gaze darted to where David’s hand rested firmly on my waist.“Louis, he’s not your fated mate!” Max burst out, desperation lacing his voice. “He’s just toying with

Grandpa was already covered with a white sheet. He wasn’t breathing anymore. The scent of death lingered in the room—sterile, final, suffocating. My wolf whimpered in my head, pacing anxiously, but I could only stand frozen, staring at the still form on the bed.The doctor looked at me, sympathy etched across his face."Alpha Louis, you’re too late. But your grandfather passed away with a smile on his face. As doctors, it's rare for us to see a patient leave this world so peacefully."Too late. The words sliced through me like claws.I numbly reached out and touched Grandpa’s hand. It was cold—too cold. Yvonne pulled me into a tight hug, her wolf brushing against mine in silent comfort."Louis, don’t be sad. You helped fulfill your grandpa’s final wish. Even the doctor said he left this world happy."I wiped at the endless tears pooling at the corner of my eyes and gently ran my fingers over the white sheet, tracing the shape of Grandpa’s face.“Yeah... he must’ve been really happy.”

The wedding day came faster than I expected. One second, I was rolling my eyes at David’s insistence on a grand event. The next, I was standing in the venue, wrapped in a wedding gown that probably cost more than my entire life's savings. My wolf, usually a ball of snarky commentary, was uncharacteristically quiet. But I could feel her satisfaction humming beneath my skin. This is right, she whispered. Then, from behind me, came a voice I knew all too well.Panicked. Shaky. Unbelieving.“Louis? I thought you were on a business trip! Why are you in a wedding dress?”Before I could even turn around, I felt a familiar presence at my side—Alpha David. His aura rolled over me like a protective blanket, steady and unbothered.“Isn’t that the guy from the hospital?” he mused, tone casual but with a glint of something dangerous in his eyes. “Should I go have a little chat with him?”His version of a “chat” probably involved a broken nose or a missing limb. Knowing his sharp instincts, he’d alr
