Chapter 1

Eva’s POV

My boyfriend tried to sell me off to pay his debt—except the mafia Don he picked was my brother. And that idiot had no idea just how protective my brother was… or how brutal he could be to anyone who dared hurt his family.

Whatever was in the car knocked me out the moment I got in. Time passed—I could feel that much—but my body stayed limp, weak. Eventually, I felt my mind clawing its way back. Not fully, but enough to hear.

Miles was on the phone. First call, he was yelling at someone for pushing him to repay a debt. Then the second call, it was a call to his mother, telling her he wouldn’t be making it to Christmas dinner.

The third call was different. Miles’s tone dropped, soft and submissive. “Sir, I know it was generous of you to let me leave and try to gather the money I owe the casino, but I still couldn’t come up with everything. So—like you said—I brought my girlfriend tonight. Maybe we can try that thing you mentioned… you know, handing her over to your Don.”

He hesitated. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to clear my debt.”

A pause. “Of course, I’ll make sure she behaves. I’ll tell her it’s an honor to be chosen by you. I know how much grace you’ve shown me by giving me this chance. See you soon.”

Panic crawled under my skin.

I tried to move, to sit up—but I didn’t have the strength to lift even an inch. Soon, the car jolted to a stop, and Miles leaned over, cupping my cheek. I forced my eyes shut tight.

“Eva, you looked so stunning tonight. I knew you wore that dress because I said I was taking you home to meet my family…” He lowered his voice. “You know my tuition debt’s a mess. I thought maybe I could hit a lucky streak at the casino. I never meant to lose everything… but now I owe money to a thug who threatened to kill me and my family. But luckily, he said you’re just his boss’s type. I owe him twenty grand, Eva. I can’t let him go after me and my mom…”

His voice dropped, almost guilty. “Don’t blame me, Eva. Blame yourself—for being too damn pretty.”

“Just one night. Mr. Snake said it’s only for one night. Then I’ll come get you. I swear, I’ll take care of you for the rest of your life. I’ll take you to meet my mom. I’ll marry you. Please, Eva… don’t hate me.” He sighed, like the weight of it was crushing him. “And most importantly—when we get to that casino, don’t fight back. Please. Things will only get worse if you do.”

I managed to twitch my fingers. They brushed against the hem of the dress I was wearing tonight. Miles was right. I had put it on just because he finally invited me to spend Christmas with his family.

I remembered how I smiled, how hopeful I was, how foolish to think we were actually moving forward. Turns out, he was just selling me off.

Twenty thousand. That’s all I was worth.

Miles could’ve asked me for help and I would’ve given it. But instead, his pride decided betrayal was easier.

My thoughts spun, scrambling for a plan. I remembered the bracelet on my wrist—the one with a hidden alarm. One press, and it would send an SOS to my brother, along with my location.

The problem? I was still too weak to move.

So I decided to wait for now, gathering what little strength I had left.

Whoever this boss Miles was trying to hand me off to—if I had the chance to mention my brother, they wouldn’t dare touch me.

And if that didn’t work? I still had the bracelet.

A few minutes later, the door opened beside me. Rough hands pulled me out of the car.

“I brought her—just like you asked,” Miles said, his voice trembling with fake pride.

A rough voice answered, laced with amusement. “I gotta admit, even in my line of work, I didn’t think you’d actually sell your girlfriend. But…”

A hand grabbed my chin, tilting my face up. “You were right. She’s very pretty.”

“Not just pretty,” Miles added quickly—eager, pathetic. “The prettiest. She was even voted best-looking in our class. But too proud—always had her nose in the air. Took me nearly a year to win her over.”

“And you’re willing to hand her over to me?” The man sneered.

“I cared about her,” Miles said with a sickening laugh, joining Snake’s. “Just not as much as I care about myself. Besides—look at that body. And her fingers? She’s a pianist. Real flexible, too… if you catch my drift. She’ll make your Don more than happy.”

The men around us laughed, crude and revolting.

“If our Don is pleased, your debt’s cleared,” the man said coldly.

“Thank you—thank you so much, Mr. Snake” Miles stammered.

“Don’t thank me yet,” The man snapped. “Let’s just hope he accepts her—our Don’s picky, doesn’t like women handed to him, which is why I told you to bring her to the casino tonight so he can decide for himself; he’s already on his way.”

My chest tightened.

Mr. Snake.

I’d heard the name before—my brother had recently mentioned recruiting someone called “Mr. Snake” to help run our family’s casino.

So Miles hadn’t just sold me to a stranger—he was trying to sell me to that Snake.

And the “Don” Snake kept referring to? He was my brother.

What were the odds?

I forced my eyes open just a sliver—and there it was, clear as day: the sign of my family’s casino.

Miles—and everyone else around me—had no idea I was actually part of one of the most infamous mafia families in town.

Before I left for school, Theo made me promise never to share anything about our family with anyone. He was afraid that if people knew who I really was, they’d try to use me.

So I took my mother’s last name—Quinn—instead of Crowe.

Still, none of this felt like luck—because Mr. Snake had never seen me before. He wasn’t going to save me.

And knowing my brother as well as I did, I started to worry I might not even get the chance to see him tonight.

Snake had it all wrong. My brother didn’t turn women away because he was picky. He turned them away because he was loyal—to the girl he loved, the one who died ten years ago.

Nothing they planned was going to work.

So my only hope now would be the small button on my bracelet. If I pressed it, my brother would know I was at the casino. And if he was as sharp as ever, he’d realize something was off—because I’d never come to the casino on my own.

Eva’s POV“It was only after your brother told me,” Miles rushed on, “that Snake made people lose money on purpose, then charged them insane interest. I didn’t know any of that. I swear—”I laughed softly and cut him off. “Stop lying, Miles. I wasn’t completely unconscious in your car. I heard everything.”His face went pale. “You can blame Snake for your debt,” I went on calmly, “but he didn’t drive me to the casino. He didn’t hand me over. You did. You’re not a victim—you’re an accomplice.”Miles broke down. “No… it wasn’t like that…”“And the things you said,” I continued. “About how dating me made you look good and how you never really liked me.”“That was just talk!” he cried. “I love you, Eva. I even planned to take care of you after—after everything. I wanted to marry you.”“Yes, you love me,” I said. “The kind of love that leaves bruises and breaks bones. That’s an interesting definition, don’t you think?”I shook my head. “Do you really think I’m that stupid?”“No, I didn’t me

Eva’s POVHe pulled back, eyes a little misty.“I’ve wanted to tell you this for a long time,” he said. “Sometimes, being too gentle with others means you lose pieces of yourself.”“I know that now,” I said softly. “But don’t worry. I’m okay.”After that, the conversation drifted to lighter things. Theo brought up what I might want to do once I fully recovered.I could tell he was still nervous I’d return to Boston alone, but I wasn’t ready to let go of my dream either. Being a pianist had always been part of me. It was Papa’s dream too. He was the one who placed my hands on those keys when I was little.“Theo,” I said gently, “I know you’re worried. But I have to go. I can’t give up on this.”“I know,” he said with a small smile. “That’s why I made some calls. There’s a music school in Germany. One of the best.”He paused. “How about there?”I blinked, surprised. I’d thought about going abroad, dreamed of it even—but deep down, I never believed Theo would let me go that far.“When you

Eva’s POVTheo’s gaze didn’t waver. He looked straight into me, after a pause, he turned and handed me a glass of water. “What do you want to do with those scumbags?” he asked. “I haven’t made a final decision yet—I figured you might want a say.”Just hearing their names again—Miles, Snake—made my blood simmer. I glanced down at my bandaged ankle, the bruises blooming across my palm.“Miles owed the casino money?” I asked.Theo nodded. “Yes.”“Just twenty grand…” I gave a bitter little laugh, flexing my aching fingers. “Considering what he did to me, let’s call it a million now.”“Only a million?” Theo raised an eyebrow. “I was thinking more like a hundred.”“Even a million’s generous,” I said, voice dry. “And with the kind of job he has, he won’t be able to pay off even the interest.”I smiled faintly. “Doesn’t our factory in Mexico still need workers? Send him there.”Theo grinned. “He’ll rot in that place. He’ll never pay off a cent.”“As for Mr. Snake…” My smile faded. He hadn’t ju

Eva’s POVSnake knew, whatever waited for him would be worse. So instead of begging Theo, he crawled toward me.Theo caught him by the arm and flung him back. “Don’t you dare come anywhere near my sister.”Snake went deathly pale. He stared at me like he’d seen a ghost. “P–Please, Don… you didn’t tell me that you have a sister. And she’s barely twenty—”Theo kicked him hard in the stomach. “So now I need to explain my family to you?”“No—no, of course not—”Theo turned to me. “What did he do to you, Eva?”“It wasn’t just the whiskey and the slaps—he used a belt on me too.”Theo’s hand fisted in Snake’s collar. “I can’t stand seeing my sister touched—and you beat her?”“Don, I didn’t know!” Snake sobbed. “I was following protocol. I was protecting you—”Theo smiled coldly. He took the belt from his men and asked calmly, “How many times did you hit Eva?”“I—I didn’t count.”“Then we’ll start at one thousand.”The belt cracked down hard. Snake screamed.Theo handed the belt to two burly m

Eva’s POVI nodded, still barely able to speak, but I forced out one word. “Theo…”Theo’s face went ghost white. I must’ve looked like hell.Snake, the idiot, completely misread the moment. “Don, this is the girl I was telling you about. Isn’t she something? I didn’t know you two already knew each other…”Theo didn’t answer. He was still holding my hand. I could feel him shaking. When Theo finally looked up— I saw it in his eyes, Snake and Miles were about to learn what real fear felt like.Theo gave my hand a quick squeeze, then stood and turned to face the room.Snake kept smiling, clueless. “Don, don’t be mad. She lied to me, said she was your sister. I mean—your sister? Never heard you had one. So I figured she was playing us. Just taught her a little lesson. For you.”Theo’s voice dropped, icy cold. “What did you do to her?”“Just a bit of whiskey,” Snake said, shrugging. “Slapped her a few times, nothing serious. Liars like her need to be put in place, right? If she ever spread

Eva’s POVSnake held out his hand. Someone passed him a belt. Snake dragged it slowly across my arm. Pain exploded behind my eyes almost immediately.“You know how many girls come in here every day,” he said calmly. “All claiming they’re connected to my Don.”The belt came down again.“And do you know how many of them I’ve tossed out of this casino?” He smiled. “Dead.”Another strike…Then another. Finally, when Snake was satisfied, he tossed the belt aside and picked up a bottle of whiskey. “I don’t want to ruin you too much before my Don sees you,” he said lightly. “So let’s drink. Might lift your mood.”“No—”He forced the bottle to my lips. Whiskey burned its way down my throat, choking me.“If you pull a stunt like that in front of my Don,” he said quietly, “I’ll make you wish you were never born. You hear me? You won’t walk out of my casino in one piece.”Then he released me.My throat burned. I tried to speak, but no sound came out.The bracelet. I had to find it. I couldn’t wait
