Chapter 4

Author: Little Red Hand
I did not know how long I was unconscious before I woke up.

The cold wind cut across my nearly bare body like knives.

It helped me regain some awareness.

Then I realized I was hanging from a tree.

My feet did not touch the ground. The rope dug deep into my skin.

Quilla held up her phone and aimed it at my face.

The number of viewers was climbing fast. Comments started to scroll.

[What the hell is happening?]

[It’s the middle of the New Year! What’s she doing?]

[What did this woman do? Why is she hanging from a tree? Is this a stunt or something else?]

[Hey, tell us what is going on!]

Quilla grew more excited when she saw the questions.

She held up the police raid notice and the photos of me from the hotel.

The comments changed instantly.

[This kind of person corrupts society. Hanging her like this is too kind!]

[Support the streamer! People like her should be exposed! Let her reputation be destroyed!]

[Nice! This feels so satisfying! Great job, streamer!]

[No mercy for someone like her! Make her pay!]

The screen was full of insults and cheers.

Quilla watched the viewer count rise. Her smile could have split her face in two.

She moved the camera close and gave me a full view of my swollen, bruised face.

I forced out the last bit of strength I had and said, “Quilla, you’re insane. You’ll stop at nothing to frame me. Did you ever think about what would happen if the truth came out?”

Quilla did not get angry. She laughed. She picked up an ice-covered tree branch from the ground, swung it hard, and struck me.

“You shameless woman! Still talking back when death is at your door!”

The branch cut several bloody welts into my body.

I was already numb from the cold. I could barely feel any pain.

After striking me more than ten times, I was still silent.

Seeing her attacks fail, Quilla panted and walked over to Cole. She put on a pitiful look.

“Cole, this woman is so stubborn. Punishing her like this is still too mild.”

Cole stared at my bloody wounds.

He froze for a moment. The last trace of hesitation in his eyes disappeared, and he looked cold and determined.

He took a deep breath and said sharply, “If she’s so shameless and refuses to repent, then brand her face with a mark. Let everyone know what she has done.”

My blood ran cold.

The man I once loved, the one I wanted to spend my life with, could say such cruel words as if they meant nothing.

It felt like a hole had been drilled through my heart, and the cold wind rushed straight in.

Before long, Quilla brought a tool.

She held up a glowing hot branding iron and waved it in front of my face like a threat.

“Sophia, I’ll give you one last minute. If you admit everything now, maybe I can go easy on you.”

She shook the red-hot tip of the iron.

I stared at the phone camera.

I forced out my voice.

“I’ll never admit to something I didn’t do, even if it kills me.

“But you’ll pay for what you did today.”

Quilla’s face turned bright red with fury.

Her eyes hardened. She raised the glowing iron and aimed it at my face.

“Fine! I’ll finish this. You’ll never hold your head up again!”

Just as the tip of the iron was about to touch me, urgent sirens cut through the air.

Several police cars stopped at the gate.

Officers jumped out and ran toward us as fast as they could.

Leading them was Owen.

He pushed through the crowd and searched anxiously until he saw me hanging from the tree, battered and bruised.

His face went pale.

He shouted in fury, “You have some nerve! Do you even know who she is? Put her down right now!”

The victims were Cole’s parents. They had been brutally murdered at home. The scene was horrifying.Cole himself had gone missing under mysterious circumstances. From the preliminary investigations, he could either be a major suspect in the murders or a victim who had been kidnapped by the actual killer.Because of the severity of the case, the city police immediately set up a special task force.I personally took charge of the investigation. After reviewing the evidence, I concluded that it was likely a revenge killing. Both of Cole’s parents had been stabbed dozens of times. The killer’s anger was fiercely evident. No cash or valuables had been stolen from the house, which ruled out robbery as a motive. While we were working urgently to get to the bottom of the matter, a breaking news alert interrupted the television broadcast.A large crowd of reporters and onlookers had gathered under an overpass. Once the truth came out, the internet blew up.Those who had insulted me without knowing the facts quickly disappeared.People focused on Quilla instead. They dug up her past misdeeds. She had been caught before for illicit affairs and never learned her lesson. She even used her own arrest to frame me.Public opinion quickly turned in my favor, and people felt justice had been done. Some began sharing information about me, the newly appointed chief, noting my honesty and dedication to my work. Public support was overwhelming. That day, I had just finished work and planned to take a short trip home to see my parents. As I stepped out of the office, I saw a familiar figure shivering in the falling snow.It was Cole. When he saw me, his eyes lit up. He ran forward and forced a smile onto his face. “Sophia, you’re finally off work! I’ve been looking for you so many times. Every time you were in a meeting or away on business. Today I finally—”I calmly cut him off, “Mr. Grif

Quilla was temporarily held for multiple suspected violations of the law.Since Cold had not directly planned or carried out any attacks, he was sternly reprimanded by the officers and then released. As soon as he left the station, he rushed to the hospital.I was lying in my hospital bed. Thankfully, my injuries were not too serious. I was just a little weak. When Cole entered the room, he immediately wore a nervous, apologetic expression. He hurried to my bedside with teary eyes. “Sophia, I’m sorry. I was foolish and believed that shameless Quilla. “I should’ve trusted you from the start. I never meant to hurt you. Please don’t be angry with me.”I smiled, but there was no warmth in it. “Mr. Griffin, since you have been released, it means that Chief Clark has cleared you. They won’t hold you responsible. “After all, you really had no idea what was going on.”I paused and saw his face relax slightly. I continued, “Don’t worry. I’m not petty. Only the people who are trul

“That day, I even had dinner with her. She was busy with work. How could she have been at an anti-vice raid?”Cole’s face went even paler. He quickly handed over the photos.Owen took the photos and studied them closely. He frowned even more. “Fine. I’ll call an expert to check these immediately. If the photos are real, I’ll be fair.“But if someone forged them to slander Chief Sinclair, they’ll face serious punishment.”He reached for his phone to make the call.Quilla panicked. She scrambled toward him, crying and sobbing, and grabbed his leg. “Chief Clark, please! Stop! I admit it! The photos… I had someone Photoshop them. I just didn’t like Sophia and wanted to play a trick on her. I didn’t mean any harm!”“A trick?”Owen kicked her away. He pointed at me, bruised and battered, and raised his voice. “You stripped her, hung her from a tree, beat her until she was covered in wounds, and broadcast it to thousands of people online! You call this a trick?”Cole was stunned

Quilla trembled in surprise. She forced an awkward smile and stammered, “Chief Clark, she’s just a shameless bar girl. I only wanted to teach her a lesson so she would learn her place.”Owen looked like he might faint from anger. He held himself together and walked past her.He carefully helped me down from the tree.My legs were numb from the cold. I stumbled as soon as I touched the ground.Owen caught me quickly. He took off his coat and wrapped it tightly around me.Seeing the bruises on my face and the cuts on my body, his eyes turned red with anger. His voice shook as he said, “Chief Sinclair, I’m truly sorry. I was busy with family matters and only just saw all the calls you made.”When Owen spoke my name, the crowd that had been jeering fell completely silent.Quilla’s face was drained of color. She froze in place. “Chief Clark, what did you just call her? “You must be mistaken. She’s just a bar girl. How could she possibly be…”Her body shook. She could not belie
