Penulis: Infinite Summer

Chapter 1

Penulis: Infinite Summer
Ashton Grant lay unconscious in the hospital bed, his face drained of color.

By then, I knew what had happened. What I didn't have was an explanation. Not a single word from anyone.

The frustration sat like a weight on my chest.

Ashton's mom, Vivian Grant, rushed into the room, her purse still clutched in one hand. The moment she saw Ashton lying there, her eyes turned red.

"Mrs. Grant…" The slap came before I could say anything else. Pain exploded across my cheek, sharp enough to make my head snap to the side. I tasted blood.

"You promised me," she said. "You promised me this wouldn't happen. How could you just stand by and let Ashton do something that dangerous?"

I kept my face turned away for a moment, my cheek burning. "Mrs. Grant, Ashton is an adult. He makes his own choices. I couldn't have stopped him."

"Don't give me that." She jabbed a finger into my chest, her face tight with anger. "He was never like this when he was with that other girl. Nothing like this ever happened. Ever since you came into his life, you've brought him nothing but trouble."

I swallowed the blood in my mouth and forced a bitter smile. "Fine. Then Ashton and I are done. Is that what you want to hear?"

"Are you threatening me?" Vivian's voice rose sharply.

"Mom…" Ashton's weak voice stopped her. His eyes had barely opened, and even speaking seemed to take what little strength he had left. "Don't blame Annie. None of this is her fault."

He tried to sit up, trembling with the effort, and his assistant, Peter Wilson, hurried over to prop another pillow behind his back. "Just leave her alone."

Vivian let out a cold laugh. "Of course you'd defend her. She's really got you wrapped around her finger, hasn't she? If you ever marry her, I suppose I can forget about having a son altogether."

She then turned on her heel and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.

The second she was gone, the tears I'd been holding back finally spilled over.

Ashton's hand was still trembling when he reached for me. He gently brushed the tears from my cheek.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. "This is my fault. I shouldn't have let you take the blame for any of this. I won't let it happen again, okay?"

His voice was as gentle as ever, exactly the way it had always been.

"What was the letter about?"

Ashton glanced at Peter. Something passed between them before he looked back at me, his smile faint.

"I'm fine, aren't I? There's no need for the letters now. You should be happy about that."

"Don't twist this around. I don't care about your money. I don't want any of it. But you could at least tell me why. Why is there someone else involved in something that's supposed to be between us?"

The steady beeping of the monitors filled the silence. A nurse opened the door and pressed a finger to her lips. "Please keep your voices down. Other patients are trying to rest."

Ashton remained perfectly composed. I, on the other hand, must have looked completely unhinged.

"If we're being technical about it, you're the outsider here," he said.

He smiled. A thin layer of mist clouded his oxygen mask with every breath.

For a moment, I had the strangest feeling that I had never really seen him clearly at all.

"Why does it matter so much to you?" he asked. "You're the one I'm marrying in the end."

But my mind had already stopped working. All I could hear were those words. I stared at him. "I'm the outsider? You really think I'm the outsider?"

I swept my hair back, revealing the gash on my forehead. "When I heard what happened to you, I fell down the stairs. I didn't even stop to get this looked at. All I could think about was getting here to see you."

Pain flickered across Ashton's face. He opened his mouth to speak, only to break into a violent coughing fit. A streak of blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

"Sir!" Peter shot to his feet, but Ashton caught him by the wrist.

"I'm fine. Get a doctor to look at Annie first."

Then he reached for my wrist. His grip was weak, his breathing labored. "About the letter… don't read too much into it.

"Winnie has no one. She's been alone for years, and she once saved my life. I owe her. I just wanted to make sure she'd be taken care of. It was one last favor. That's all."

"Just a favor?"

With visible effort, he gave the slightest nod.

"Stop lying to me." I picked up one of the pages lying nearby. "You asked to be buried beside her when you die. Was that just a favor too?

"What about me? We're done, Ashton. Since I'm such an outsider, I wouldn't want to get in the way of whatever the two of you have."

"Annie!" Ashton shouted my name with what little strength he had left.

I didn't turn around. I opened the door and walked out.

The moment the door closed behind me, my legs gave out. I sank to the floor against the wall, too weak to keep myself upright.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I knew my passcode by heart, but it still took me several tries to enter it correctly.

Finally, the screen changed.

"Ms. Annie Shaw, please plan your time accordingly. Your flight is scheduled to depart at midnight tomorrow."

Casper said, "Yeah, I'm busy. I'll just work late tonight. I'll get it done eventually."I asked, "Your dad doesn't mind you slacking off?"He shrugged. "Apparently, securing his future daughter-in-law is a higher priority."I nodded thoughtfully, my fingers never leaving the keyboard. "In that case, I suppose we should make this partnership official sooner rather than later.""What partnership?""The one between our families."Casper stared at me. "Since when do our families have a partnership?"I finally stopped typing and looked up at him. For a second, he just stared back. Then realization hit him.He shot out of his chair so fast that it nearly toppled over. "Wait. Are you saying yes? I'm going to start planning right now, Annie. I swear, I'm going to give you the wedding of your dreams."He threw open the office door and rushed out like someone had lit a fire under him.It wasn't until later that I found out what he'd done next. The second he got back to his office, h

The door clicked shut, and Casper immediately pulled out his phone and booked us flights home. "If Ashton's willing to chase you all the way out here, I'm guessing you're not exactly in the mood to keep vacationing."Chloe nodded in agreement. "Your parents have been dying for us to come home anyway."Casper straightened slightly and cleared his throat. "Well, if your parents start giving you a hard time about settling down, just remember I'm available.""I'll keep that in mind."Casper's head snapped toward me. "Wait. What did you just say?"Chloe rolled her eyes, though the knowing smile on her face gave her away. "She said she'll keep it in mind."The day we flew home, Casper went ahead to get the car while Chloe waited outside the terminal with me. Suddenly, she pointed toward an older woman sitting by the curb. "Hey, doesn't that look like your ex's mom? I thought his family lived a couple of hours away.""She doesn't look like her. That is her."Chloe's mouth fell open. S

After saying that, Chloe clutched her head and disappeared into her room. There was no reasoning with her. Still riding the buzz from the alcohol, I pulled out my phone and started deleting every trace of my past with Ashton. If I was moving on, I was moving on for good. The progress bar crawled across the screen as hundreds of photos vanished one by one, and somehow, it felt as though the memories in my head were disappearing with them.At some point, my phone slipped from my hand and landed on the carpet. I drifted off before I even realized how tired I was.I had no idea how long I'd been asleep when a chuckle stirred me awake.I opened my eyes to find a face hovering in front of me. One that looked uncannily like Chloe's."Annie, it's been forever. Don't tell me you've forgotten all about me."I shrank back. Behind him, Chloe cracked open her bedroom door. She peeked through the narrow gap, looking distinctly guilty. "Hey, Casper."Over the next few days, no matter where C

I saw Ashton's reaction through the security camera—every second of it.He dropped to his knees. His phone slipped from his hands once, then again. But before he could send me a single message, I turned my phone off.The note I'd left him was short. After six years together, you'd think there would have been a thousand things left to say. There weren't. In the end, all I had for him were four lines. "The dress is yours. Give it to Winnie. I hope you two have a beautiful life together. Don't ever look for me again."My destination was a quiet little town. My best friend, Chloe Brenner, had rented an apartment there ahead of time and even taken time off work just to stay with me.The moment I opened the door, a party popper went off in my face. "Congratulations on finally cutting your losses!"Chloe took my suitcase with one hand and shoved a glass of wine into the other. She said, "Seriously, I'm starting to think Ashton had you under some kind of spell. You grew up with everyth

Ashton drove away, leaving a rush of hot air in his wake.Almost instinctively, I pressed a hand to my chest. That was when I realized that something was missing. My neck was bare.I'd worn that pendant every day for the past six years.Ashton had made it for me when we'd first started dating. I'd come down with a bad case of the flu, and he'd personally chosen the stone, then carved the pendant by hand.Back then, he'd moved everything he could out of the office and worked from home just so he wouldn't have to leave me alone.I'd teased him about it. "It's just the flu. You don't have to worry this much."Ashton had wrapped his arms around me and shaken his head. "I just need to know you're okay. I can't stand seeing you sick. It hurts more than anything you could ever do to me."By the time I reached the hospital, I found Ashton carefully fastening that same pendant around Winnie's neck."We can't do this," Winnie said through her tears. "Annie saved my life. I can't do some

I ended the call.Ashton's eyes found me almost immediately, and the color drained from his face. "Annie? What are you doing here?"He grabbed the wheels of his chair and pushed himself toward me as fast as he could.Winnie froze for a second. Then, her face lit up. "Annie! You're here!"Her smile was so bright, so genuinely delighted, that I somehow felt like the villain.Ashton looked from me to Winnie. Winnie asked, "You two know each other?""She's a friend," he replied.I stared at him. "A friend? That's all I am?"Ashton pulled out his phone. A second later, a message appeared on mine. "She's fragile. She can't handle getting upset. She barely knows you. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?"I almost laughed. Then I looked at Winnie and asked, "Aren't you going to introduce me properly?"Winnie seemed completely oblivious to the tension between us. She said, "Ashton, this is Annie Shaw. She's the woman who's been supporting me for the past six years."Asht
