Ashton Grant lay unconscious in the hospital bed, his face drained of color.By then, I knew what had happened. What I didn't have was an explanation. Not a single word from anyone. The frustration sat like a weight on my chest.Ashton's mom, Vivian Grant, rushed into the room, her purse still clutched in one hand. The moment she saw Ashton lying there, her eyes turned red."Mrs. Grant…" The slap came before I could say anything else. Pain exploded across my cheek, sharp enough to make my head snap to the side. I tasted blood."You promised me," she said. "You promised me this wouldn't happen. How could you just stand by and let Ashton do something that dangerous?"I kept my face turned away for a moment, my cheek burning. "Mrs. Grant, Ashton is an adult. He makes his own choices. I couldn't have stopped him.""Don't give me that." She jabbed a finger into my chest, her face tight with anger. "He was never like this when he was with that other girl. Nothing like this ever happen

I ended the call.Ashton's eyes found me almost immediately, and the color drained from his face. "Annie? What are you doing here?"He grabbed the wheels of his chair and pushed himself toward me as fast as he could.Winnie froze for a second. Then, her face lit up. "Annie! You're here!"Her smile was so bright, so genuinely delighted, that I somehow felt like the villain.Ashton looked from me to Winnie. Winnie asked, "You two know each other?""She's a friend," he replied.I stared at him. "A friend? That's all I am?"Ashton pulled out his phone. A second later, a message appeared on mine. "She's fragile. She can't handle getting upset. She barely knows you. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?"I almost laughed. Then I looked at Winnie and asked, "Aren't you going to introduce me properly?"Winnie seemed completely oblivious to the tension between us. She said, "Ashton, this is Annie Shaw. She's the woman who's been supporting me for the past six years."Asht

I saw Ashton's reaction through the security camera—every second of it.He dropped to his knees. His phone slipped from his hands once, then again. But before he could send me a single message, I turned my phone off.The note I'd left him was short. After six years together, you'd think there would have been a thousand things left to say. There weren't. In the end, all I had for him were four lines. "The dress is yours. Give it to Winnie. I hope you two have a beautiful life together. Don't ever look for me again."My destination was a quiet little town. My best friend, Chloe Brenner, had rented an apartment there ahead of time and even taken time off work just to stay with me.The moment I opened the door, a party popper went off in my face. "Congratulations on finally cutting your losses!"Chloe took my suitcase with one hand and shoved a glass of wine into the other. She said, "Seriously, I'm starting to think Ashton had you under some kind of spell. You grew up with everyth

The door clicked shut, and Casper immediately pulled out his phone and booked us flights home. "If Ashton's willing to chase you all the way out here, I'm guessing you're not exactly in the mood to keep vacationing."Chloe nodded in agreement. "Your parents have been dying for us to come home anyway."Casper straightened slightly and cleared his throat. "Well, if your parents start giving you a hard time about settling down, just remember I'm available.""I'll keep that in mind."Casper's head snapped toward me. "Wait. What did you just say?"Chloe rolled her eyes, though the knowing smile on her face gave her away. "She said she'll keep it in mind."The day we flew home, Casper went ahead to get the car while Chloe waited outside the terminal with me. Suddenly, she pointed toward an older woman sitting by the curb. "Hey, doesn't that look like your ex's mom? I thought his family lived a couple of hours away.""She doesn't look like her. That is her."Chloe's mouth fell open. S
