Chapter 1

My brother forced me to drink an aphrodisiac, triggering my heat early.

Half-conscious, I felt someone pulling at my clothes.

I wanted to fight, but my arms and legs felt like lead, and I couldn't move them.

My mother's voice came from above me. "Penny, I don't have a choice, either. If we don't get this investment, the pack may not survive.

"You're an Alpha's daughter. Think of it as a sacrifice for the pack." As she spoke, she dressed me in a lace slip.

I wanted to speak, but I didn't even have the strength to move my lips. All I could do was let her do whatever she wanted with me.

Then my brother's voice came from outside, trembling with excitement. "Mom, it's settled. Rowan Gale is sending someone to pick her up soon."

Then he patted my shoulder.

"Don't act like you've been wronged. That's Rowan Gale, the Alpha of the largest pack in the werewolf world. Women fight each other for a chance to get into his bed. Count yourself lucky."

My mother agreed. "That's right. If Rowan Gale actually takes a liking to you and makes you his Luna, our pack will be set."

My brother scoffed. "Mom, think about it. Why would a man as wealthy as Rowan take a liking to someone as lowly as Penny? He'll only play with her. That's all.

"Even one night serving Rowan Gale is more than you deserve."

My head was heavy, but I could still hear the name clearly.

Rowan Gale.

Was he the one his own brother had hunted seven years ago, the one who'd nearly frozen to death in the snow?

Seven years ago, I pulled him out of that snow, half-dead. I planned his campaign, and despite being vastly outnumbered, he defeated his brother and took the Alpha's seat.

I taught him everything he knew about running a pack. He called me his teacher and the one who'd saved his life.

And now my brother had the nerve to say I'd be marrying above my station?

My mother took a rope and trussed me up like a turkey.

"Don't hold it against us. You're making this sacrifice for the pack. It's only right."

When I was born, a witch prophesied that I was an ill omen and that my existence would bring disaster to the pack.

My parents believed her, and whenever anything went wrong in the pack, they blamed it on me.

Even this crisis, they'd decided, was my fault.

That was exactly why they could put me in Rowan's bed with a clear conscience.

The drug's effects were wearing off, my heat was easing, and my head was clearing.

I could hear my brother negotiating with Rowan's Beta.

But what he didn't know was that Rowan's Beta was secretly working for me too.

Once I knew Rowan was firmly established, I withdrew without leaving a trace.

But he spent seven full years looking for me.

He'd turned a pebble I'd given him without a second thought into a necklace and worn it for seven years as if it were sacred.

Not long ago, some fool had joked that Rowan Gale's necklace was nothing more than a worthless rock.

Even though the man was a longtime business partner, Rowan immediately pulled every investment tied to him and left him no way to recover.

And my brother imagined he could package me up and hand me over to Rowan in exchange for an investment.

It was pure fantasy.

Most of the drug's effects had worn off, but I still couldn't move.

Two guards carried me out to a car.

My brother was driving.

He saw my eyes open in the rearview mirror, and a smug little smile tugged at his lips.

"Awake, Penny?

"I'm taking you to Rowan Gale. Countless women would kill for a chance to get into his bed. I'm giving you that chance."

I gave a humorless laugh.

"You're worried the pack's financial problems will threaten your position as heir. Don't pretend this is about anything else."

He shook his head, as though none of it were his doing.

"Don't call me heartless. Blame yourself for being the ill omen threatening this pack. Without you, there would've been no crisis at all."

He was the one who couldn't run a pack properly, yet that baseless superstition was the one thing he'd managed to remember all these years.

Maybe he was worried I wouldn't cooperate, because his voice softened. "Be good, Penny. If this deal goes through, I'll get you anything you want."

I saw right through his feigned concern. I said nothing and closed my eyes.

He took my silence as proof that I had finally given in.

We drove all the way to a villa, and they blindfolded me before letting me out of the car.

When the cloth came off, I was in an enormous bedroom.

Through the window, I could see one mountain range after another behind the house.

My only thought was whether those hills were where my brother would end up buried.

It was raining hard outside, and I stood under the eaves looking out at the street.Guards were everywhere, but not one of them dared to stop me.My bruises had almost faded. Then an umbrella appeared above my head, and a coat settled around my shoulders."I've looked into it. Merrick's pack is nothing. The slightest crisis could wipe it out."He can't make you happy."I looked at him quietly. "What is it you're trying to say?""You'd rather be with someone so useless than come back to me?"I looked straight at him."He isn't useless."He takes care of me in every way, remembers every anniversary, and makes me breakfast every morning."Rowan ground his teeth."I can do all of that ten thousand times better. I can give you the largest pack in the werewolf world and make you the most honored Luna alive."I shook my head. "He doesn't keep a kennel full of dogs around to disgust me the way you do."Rowan stiffened, his face turning pale. "What can he give you? Being his mate only means liv

My brother froze and looked at me in alarm.I began slowly, my voice quiet but hard as iron. "When we were children, we played hide-and-seek, and you deliberately led me into a patch of wolfsbane. It poisoned me. You could have helped me right then, but instead you turned and walked away. The poison spread through my blood and left lasting damage."He pressed his lips together and lowered his head.I didn't let up. "Because a witch called me an omen, I was blamed for every loss this pack ever suffered and forced to work to pay off the pack's debts."His head sank even lower. Not out of guilt, but because everything was being exposed in front of Rowan, and he knew there was no deal left to make.Rowan's face darkened with every painful detail I recounted, as though each word were being carved into his heart.Rowan looked at me. "How do you want this handled?" His voice trembled, and even breathing had begun to hurt him.My brother scrambled over and grabbed my feet."I was wrong, Penny.

Rowan stayed where he was and didn't answer. He lowered his eyes and wouldn't look at me, like a big dog whose owner had found its weak spot."Answer me!" I didn't raise my voice, but each word carried enough weight to leave no room for argument. He finally gave in. "Only three..." Then he hurried to explain, "I only looked at them. I never touched them."Never touched them. I knew he was telling the truth.Even when he'd done something wrong, he'd never once lied to my face.I pointed at Blanche on the floor."And her? How do you explain her?"Rowan's face darkened, and Blanche scrambled back two steps, staring at him in terror."What have you been telling people you are?"Blanche's lips trembled, and her words came out in fragments. "I said... I said I was your secretary..."I cut her off before she could finish. "You were the person who mattered most to him, the only woman close to him, and there was even talk that..." I paused deliberately, then continued, "You would be his Luna?"

"The Alpha's here." My brother went over to greet him at once.He was all smiles, rubbing his hands together nonstop and fawning like a dog."This is my sister, a gift for the Alpha. She has a bit of a temper, but we've trained her, and I guarantee you'll be satisfied."The captain hurried forward to claim some credit."Yes, yes. We checked. She's never been with anyone. She's completely untouched."Rowan's eyes darkened. He gave the two of them the briefest glance, then turned to look at me as I knelt in the hall. The point of the knife was less than an inch from my face.I raised my head slowly and gave him a cold smile."After all these years, this is how you've trained your people?"For a second, his expression froze. His body went rigid as if caught in a binding spell, and even his breathing stopped. But no one there noticed anything unusual about him.Blanche inched the knife closer to my face and said smugly, "That's right, Alpha. She's new and doesn't know the rules, so we're t

When the doors opened, all the gold in the room was bright enough to blind anyone.Even the stone set into the floor was a piece of jade worth a fortune.Never mind all the objects scattered around the room, large and small. Even an ordinary ashtray in that room was worth a million dollars. At the sight of so much luxury, my mother's mouth fell open."The ornaments in this room alone could buy our entire pack, and this is only one of his least important rooms. Just how rich is he?"I can't even imagine how rich he is."My brother went around touching everything like a dog that had never been let out."Penny, if you serve Rowan Gale well, our pack will never have to worry about money again."If I were a woman, I'd gladly be his dog."I found his behavior both pitiful and ridiculous.I could see at a glance that this was no ordinary room. The pen displayed under glass on the cabinet wasn't a rare antique. It was the pen I used to sign with. The blue moon roses in full bloom on the table

About half an hour later, the bedroom door was kicked open. Two guards entered and each took one of my arms."Move. Rowan Gale will be here soon."I forced my eyes open and glared at them."I don't need you to hold me up. I have legs. I can walk!"We walked down a corridor into a hall, where two rows of armed guards stood. At their head stood the captain of Rowan's guard. When I taught Rowan the rules, he was one of the lowest-ranking guards there, so it made sense that he'd never seen me.What he didn't know was that he'd soon pay for that ignorance. My brother rubbed his hands together and gave the captain a fawning smile. "This is my sister. Do you think she'll be suitable for your Alpha?"The captain looked me up and down as if he were inspecting a cut of meat at a butcher's counter, then scoffed. "Your sister doesn't look willing at all. Forget it. Our Alpha isn't a man who forces anyone. If she doesn't want to, let it go."Flustered, my brother quickly protested, "No, no. She's j
