Chapter 6

Author: Harlow
The next day, Chris checked out of the hotel. The hospital provided accommodation, and he moved in with his luggage.

But while at work, he unexpectedly heard the names of Jessica and Michael.

"Ms. Wilder and Mr. Hall have such a great relationship. Did you see the news back then?"

"Yeah, I saw it. Ms. Wilder and Mr. Hall were childhood sweethearts. They were supposed to be together, but their families broke them up. Tsk tsk, it’s like a romance novel!"

"But... didn’t I hear Ms. Wilder is married?"

"So what if she’s married? Mr. Hall is too! Didn’t you see his daughter’s all grown up? But... they must be divorced now, otherwise how could they be back together?"

"Separated for years, married to other people and still reunited—what a melodrama. But Mr. Hall does seem gentle, and Ms. Wilder, too."

Chris stayed frozen at the doorway for a long time, not reacting until his roommate came back from fetching water and called out to him.

"Chris, what’s wrong?"

Coming back to his senses, he shook his head.

His roommate, seeing him holding a cup, shook the thermos. "Come in, I just got some water."

Chris walked stiffly back into the room. His roommate poured him a cup of water.

"Those young nurses just got off duty. Our hospital just received sponsorship from the Wilder Group. It’s natural they’d be curious about Ms. Wilder."

The hospital was sponsored by the Wilder Group?

Chris slowly turned his head toward his roommate. "The Wilder Group? Jessica?"

"Yeah, you’ve heard too?" His roommate, eyes fixed on his phone while gaming, replied, "The Wilder Group just donated 40 million dollars worth of medical equipment. Big move!"

Chris took a few sips of water, feeling a little steadier. Just as he was about to head out, he heard his roommate say from behind, "Hey, you’re assisting with the professor’s surgery tomorrow. You’ve got steady hands—he said the files are in his office. Go grab them."

The dorm for their group of intern doctors wasn’t far from the back of the hospital. After thinking for a moment, Chris put on a coat and got ready to retrieve the case file.

Truthfully, he really wanted to see what Jessica looked like when she loved someone.

Even after five years together, she never loved him. Since he never got her heart, he wanted to see how she loved someone else.

He entered the hospital through the back entrance, went to the professor’s office for the case file, then wandered aimlessly through the hospital.

The nurses all recognized him.

Good-looking, and handpicked by the hospital as an intern—what other intern gets to perform surgery on day one?

Someone like that received a lot of attention in the hospital.

"Dr. Green, what brings you here? Covering another shift?" a nurse greeted him.

Chris hesitated for a moment before walking over and saying, "I came to get a case file. Can you check on a little girl named Jordan? She probably has a fever from bronchitis. Is she still getting an IV?"

The nurse was about to look it up, but the moment she heard the name, she stopped and looked up at him mysteriously.

"Dr. Green, you heard too?"

Chris looked puzzled.

Leaning forward, the nurse whispered, "That little girl seems to be Ms. Wilder’s daughter. You didn’t know? The Wilder Group invested in our hospital and donated medical equipment like it’s free."

She pointed with her lips. "She’s still in Room 512. Rich kids are different—just a cold and fever, and they’re getting IVs in a private ward. Should be done in about half an hour."

"Thanks."

Room 512 was on the same floor. A turn of the corner, and he could see it.

Coincidentally, Jessica and Michael were right outside the room. Perhaps to avoid disturbing the child, the two adults were sitting shoulder to shoulder on the bench outside the private room, the atmosphere ambiguous.

"Here, just take it." Jessica stuffed something into Michael’s hands.

Michael looked a little panicked, instinctively trying to push it back. "No need, staying at your place with Jordan is trouble enough—I can’t take your car."

So she was giving her first love a car.

Chris let out a bitter laugh.

As expected, different people live different fates.

Chris never worked, just stayed home, maybe went out for groceries—he never even needed a car. It wasn’t until two years after they married that Linda gave him one, saying it was for getting around.

Seeing the concern in her mother’s eyes, Chris didn’t want to worry her. He couldn’t refuse, so he accepted it. But that same night, Jessica came home drunk and mocked him again.

"You’re nothing but a househusband. Look at you, you’re getting both money and a car. My dad drove that car for years, and you still take it? Are you a beggar or something?"

Jessica pulled out a card and shoved it into Chris’s pocket. "Stop always asking my mom for money. People will think I’m treating you badly if word gets out."

Such a large-scale replacement meant that the chances of recovering the missing drugs were almost zero. More importantly, under the problems caused by the shortage, they had to immediately find a substitute medication — that was the real priority. They simply didn’t have the time to track down whoever had swapped the drugs. Their efforts had to focus on the hospitals that were now facing critical shortages. It seemed the person behind all this had already anticipated that.“There’s one more thing you need to prepare for,” Francesca said, her tone suddenly heavy, as if what she was about to say carried great importance.“Go on,” Chris replied.Francesca stayed silent for a few seconds. It sounded like she was flipping through some documents on the other end — the faint rustle of papers came through the line. After a pause, she finally said, “Nicole and Logan have conducted a small-scale review of potential substitute drugs. Nicole gave me an answer.”“The most effective substitute

“All right, there’s no point in discussing this any further today. Everyone can go now. Once you’re done eating, head back. All the reports from Hurricane Media have already been released. Indya, take the PR department and start managing the situation. Also, what’s going on with that variety show Blake was supposed to sign for recently? Why hasn’t the contract been finalized yet?”A while back, Sam and Shannon had negotiated a variety show deal for Blake — one that suited him well and that he was quite interested in joining. But so far, they hadn’t reached an agreement with the director, so the contract had never been delivered.“Blake’s going to attend a red carpet event in a couple of days,” Indya said. “Sam will be accompanying him. The contract will probably come through after the event, but he’s already agreed to participate.”Jessica tapped on the table. “Don’t put all your attention on your love life. He’s our company’s main artist, and every project is centered around him.

After he finished speaking, it was as if he had completed some sort of mission. He began crawling forward again, struggling even as the bodyguards held him down. He looked up at the two people sitting in the chairs.“You said you’d let me go! You said once I answered, I could leave! Let me out — let me out! Please, let me out!!”Jessica sat in her chair, staring at the shadow of the man on the ground for a long while. Then she rose swiftly to her feet, and Chris followed her out.The corridor outside was still pitch dark. The sound of the door opening made the motion-sensor lights flicker faintly. The bodyguards remained hidden in the shadows. Jessica and Chris stood there — the only two living figures in that darkness.“Do you think he’s really insane or just pretending? Is what he said believable?” Jessica asked.Chris replied, “When I looked into his eyes, they were flickering but still focused — that means he hasn’t lost his mind. It’s probably just a physiological reaction f

“Later on, we felt we couldn’t delay any longer. All the measurement data had already come out, so we planned to propose sending the construction team over. But not long after that, the project was bought by your company. Heh… at that time, I thought you must have fallen into some kind of trap — who would take over such a half-finished project?”Anthony suddenly laughed as he spoke, as if he had gone mad. He raised a hand and clutched at his own hair.“Everyone knew that they kept that project only to use it later. I didn’t work at Hall Group for very long, so I didn’t know much, but that chairman of theirs never looked like a real boss to me. He was always timid, shrinking back like a quail all day long. I figured there had to be someone behind him.”To everyone else, Thomas had always seemed calm and in control — except for that one public breakdown that ruined his reputation and got him kicked out by Jaden. Other than that, every time he appeared, he represented the entire Hall f

It wasn’t until Jessica strode quickly to a certain door that someone finally appeared from the right side — a figure hidden in the darkness, hands clasped respectfully in front of him as he greeted softly, “Ms. Wilder.”“How is he?” she asked.“That man has been locked up the whole time,” the subordinate replied. “He seems a little mentally unstable, but his physical condition is fine. According to your orders, we’ve made sure he doesn’t die.”At the mention of this person, Jessica frowned. Her expression turned cold and displeased. “Can he still talk? He hasn’t gone completely mad, has he?”“We haven’t interfered much. Meals have been delivered regularly — that shouldn’t be a problem.”Now that they could finally clear up their doubts, they could get rid of Anthony afterward.“Open the door.”It was the same small room. When the door opened, a shadowy figure lunged toward it — but before he could reach the doorway, someone pulled him back. A hoarse, broken scream tore through

Some of the patients’ medications could be replaced, but some patients were either allergic to the substitute drugs or those medications were their regular prescriptions, and the current stock was not enough to last for long.“How long will it take for Nicole’s results to come out?”“They said it would take at least one to two days. I called Nicole over to help, so it might be a bit faster, but definitely not today — the earliest would be tomorrow. We’re already on our way to the academy, so let Francesca figure something out when we get there.”Soon, Shannon hung up the phone and came in from outside. She said, “I’ve confirmed with the pharmaceutical factory — they said there’s no problem with the medicine and they haven’t changed the batch numbers. If the drugs had been replaced, the drug administration would have sent a notice, but they haven’t received anything. So the medicine they delivered was intact; the problem must have come from someone else.”That person had only delive
