Chapter 5

Author: Harlow
After thinking it over, Jessica still felt that bringing Michael along was not a good idea.

"Forget it, I'll go by myself. Chris has a strange personality—he might offend you. You can get some rest. Tomorrow you still have to take Jordan to the hospital for an IV. Let’s not get delayed."

After saying that, Jessica didn’t even give Michael a chance to object and left with her car keys.

Michael stood in the living room for a long time, then turned and looked around the whole house, finally pushing open the door to Jessica and Chris’s bedroom.

Jessica really didn’t like Chris, did she?

When he first arrived, he had noticed that there were no men's toiletries at all, yet Jessica hadn’t realized that.

Michael felt that it saved him a lot of trouble.

Because of a problem with his passport, Chris had spent several days trying to resolve it, missing the first round of exchange studies. A fire simmered quietly in his chest—he knew all of this was Jessica’s doing. She was forcing him to show up.

But for the sake of a smooth divorce, he still didn’t say anything.

Language classes started, and Chris spent every day either in class or interning at the hospital.

When Jonathan heard that he couldn’t go abroad, he told him to wait for the next semester. In the meantime, a hospital that had requested him long ago had him come in for work. With Jonathan making the connection, Chris started working for the first time in five years.

He moved to a different hotel. He knew very well that if Jessica wanted to find him, she would succeed no matter where he went.

Work and study filled up his week. Busy and fulfilled, Chris once again felt invigorated—he finally felt alive.

He had thought he wouldn’t run into Michael until the divorce was finalized, but unexpectedly, Michael showed up at the hospital where he was interning—with Jordan.

“You must be Mr. Green.”

Chris, still in a white coat and fresh off the operating table, was heading toward his office when he heard the voice and turned his head.

Michael smiled at him. “Hello, I’m Michael.”

His voice matched the one on the phone, and he did indeed have the look Jessica liked. No wonder she had thought about him for so many years.

Chris instinctively looked for Jessica, but instead locked eyes with Sophie’s disdainful glare.

“What are you doing here? You didn’t follow us here, did you?” Sophie sneered. She had known Chris wouldn’t obediently leave the house. After all the fuss, here he was pursuing her sister.

Chris looked away, nodded slightly at Michael, and turned to leave.

But Michael didn’t seem willing to let him go, stepping forward to block his way.

“Mr. Green, let’s talk.”

Michael’s fake smile made Chris uncomfortable.

What was there to talk about between a recently-returned first love and a cast-aside, soon-to-be-divorced husband?

Chris frowned and declined. “I still have work.”

Before Michael could speak, Sophie hurriedly interrupted, “Michael is being nice to you. Don’t be so ungrateful!”

The noise had already drawn some attention.

If the security guards were alerted, it would only reflect poorly on him.

Chris sighed. “What are you getting at?”

Michael said nothing, only gestured toward the fire escape.

Inside the fire escape.

The emergency exit light hung at an odd angle, and the cement floor was littered with cigarette butts.

“You’ve moved out already?”

Michael crushed a cigarette butt with his shoe, dragging a long black streak across the floor.

He said “moved out,” clearly implying he already saw himself as the master of Jessica’s home.

Chris sneered, his gaze fixed on Michael. “Mr. Hall, since you already know, why come here to humiliate me?”

Michael didn’t respond. He sucked in his cheeks, then said slowly, “Mr. Green, don’t tell me you’re trying to play hard to get—trying to keep Jessica thinking about you this way?”

Even Chris hadn’t thought of it like that. If it worked, it would be the first time she had thought of him.

No wonder she had been so attached to Michael all these years.

Chris laughed bitterly. “I’ll be divorcing Jessica soon. Actually, I should already be abroad. If not for...”

If he had already decided to leave, why was there still a sliver of hope buried deep in his heart—hoping that Jessica would stop him?

She was so busy, and these days Michael and his daughter were always with her...

What was he being delusional about?

Chris gave a pained smile.

“I don’t believe you’d give up someone like Jessica.” Michael acted as though he had heard a joke.

“So, in your eyes, Jessica is just a tree that gives good shade, is that it? Then her taste must be awful.”

After saying that, Chris pushed open the fire escape door and stepped out.

Michael gave a few sinister laughs, then suddenly pulled a fruit knife from behind and slashed his own arm.

“Chris, you want a divorce? I’ll help you out...”

Chris turned back and tried to grab the knife, but it was too late.

The sharp blade cut through Michael’s tailored suit and left a long gash on his upper left arm.

Blood dripped to the ground.

Michael’s face turned pale.

For the first time, Chris hated being a doctor.

He quickly turned and yelled, “Patient in need of surgery—send him to the OR!”

Sophie was waiting outside the fire escape. Hearing this, she grabbed Chris’s arm. “What did you do?”

Chris kept walking.

Sophie yanked his arm again. “I said, what did you do?”

Chris shook her off impatiently. “If you’re still worried about your beloved’s safety, then get your ass into the fire escape!”

This suspicion had long taken root in Chris’s heart. He had always felt Sophie treated Michael with excessive warmth.

The pampered second daughter of the Wilder family actually came to the hospital to accompany Michael. In an ordinary family, maybe that would be considered care between in-laws. But she was Sophie—born with everything.

Her attitude toward him said it all.

Love and hate were clearly defined.

Sure enough, Sophie stared at him wide-eyed, as if he had hit a nerve.

After a moment, she snapped out of it and ran into the fire escape.

Jessica arrived quickly—likely right after getting a call from Sophie and leaving work in a rush.

Michael’s wound wasn’t too serious. He was cruel to himself, but his instinct still protected him. It only nicked a blood vessel.

But that was enough for Jessica to charge in with righteous fury.

So when she pushed open the office door, full of rage, Chris wasn’t the least bit surprised.

“You stabbed Michael with a knife?”

Chris gave a bitter smile. “Is that really what you think of me?”

Jessica snapped back, “Isn’t it true? You’ve been fighting with me over him this whole time!”

So everything he had done these days was, in her eyes, petty jealousy over Michael.

“Michael cut himself.”

“You think I’d believe that? Has Michael gone mad—hurting himself just to frame you? You think you’re worth it?”

Those last words made it hard for Chris to breathe. He stared at her intently. “He framed me. Jessica, why can’t you just believe me—just once?”

‘Just this once—’

If she believed him now, then maybe these five years wouldn’t have been for nothing.

But every hope he had pinned on her always ended in disappointment.

“You’d better pray he’s okay.” Jessica flung out those final words and left the office.

Her high heels clicked crisply across the hospital floor.

Chris collapsed helplessly into his chair.

In the end, she didn’t even bother closing the door behind her.

In the wound-cleaning room, Jessica pulled up a chair and sat beside Michael.

The cut was long, but thankfully not deep.

Michael looked pale. “Jessica, did I do something to upset Mr. Green?”

Jessica shook her head. She couldn’t get Chris’s expression out of her mind.

From what she knew of him, he didn’t seem like the kind of person who would do something like that.

Had she really misjudged him?

Michael didn’t get the reaction he wanted and kept pressing, “Jessica, if I’m really causing trouble here, I can take Jordan and move to a hotel.”

Oh right, Jordan was still sick.

All this drama these past two days had made it hard for the child to recover.

Things had gone too far today—it was just childish.

Had she been indulging Chris too much all along?

With that thought in mind, Jessica reassured him, “No, stay. You didn’t do anything wrong. He hurt you—I’ll make sure he apologizes to you in person.”

Michael nodded, a faint smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

Just then, Sophie burst through the door. “Jessica, you’re finally here! Chris dared to stab Michael with a knife! Aren’t you going to do something?”

“Well, when his passport is ready, he’ll be gone anyway!”

When Jessica heard that, she suddenly stood up and asked, “Where is he going?”

Sophie was startled and blinked. “He’s going abroad. Didn’t you know?”

Shannon sighed as she looked at how tired Chris was. She took the coffee cup from his hand and personally made him a fresh cup of coffee."Ms. Wilder may not be as gentle as other women, but... Ms. Wilder still cares about you. Every time you wanted to leave, Ms. Wilder got really anxious. It was only after Mrs. Linda's birthday banquet that Ms. Wilder find out about..."Shannon cleared her throat lightly. "Only then did she find out that you two had divorced."Actually, Shannon was even more curious about how Ms. Wilder had signed the divorce agreement. Given how much she cared for Chris, if she had seen the agreement in person, she definitely wouldn't have signed it. Otherwise, she wouldn't have stopped Chris from going abroad so many times. So how did she end up signing it?The fragrance of coffee spread throughout the office, and Shannon handed the cup to him, her voice soft. "Ms. Wilder has been in this position for so long that she's bound to have some tendencies of someone in po

Hearing the mention of River Crescent, Mr. Hickey's expression immediately darkened, and the other shareholders turned their gazes toward him.People like them having some secrets wasn't unusual, but they hid them well and never used their own names to buy properties. They would usually use the names of their spouses or family members.Jessica hadn't expected her to have such great skills to actually find out about it."How did you..."There was still much more behind the file, but Jessica was in a good mood after catching Chris's attention. She didn't want to continue discussing it and just wanted to quickly go back with him. She closed the file, placing it on the table and pressing down with her hand."I know a lot more, not just about Mr. Hickey." She leaned back, her whole body relaxing as she spread her arms out. "You all can try to bring me down, but my mother's methods will be even harsher than mine."Over the years, she had tolerated the shareholders' small tricks in thei

Actually, Jessica had figured it out in the car."Michael is in a tough spot himself."Chris nodded. Since it was the Wilder family's reputation on the line, and he and Jessica were just partners, he didn't need to get angry on Michael's behalf.Since that was the case, he stood up and was about to leave, but Jessica quickly stepped forward to stop him."There are so many journalists outside, and there must be some near the front gates as well. If they don't see you returning home with me, they'll definitely speculate. During the collaboration phase, you need to stay with me.""You!"He frowned at Jessica, and she smiled lightly. "It's just a collaboration. Are you scared?"What was there to be scared of? He was a man, and it wasn't he who was going to suffer. So, Jessica started dealing with work, while Chris was ordered to stay in the office. He made a few phone calls to some teachers, starting with an apology."Chris, the exchange program in Desland is precious. They can't

Sophie froze for a moment, clearly not understanding all of what Jessica had just said."I just wanted these people to acknowledge Michael as my brother-in-law. I didn't do anything that would harm the company's image!""As the CEO, if I had an affair while married, my personal reputation alone would cause many business opportunities to slip away from us. Sophie, what happens between me and Chris is not for you to meddle in. If it weren't for Chris today, I would have to bear the shame of having an affair during my marriage. Tomorrow, the company's shareholders could demand my resignation. Do you want to destroy the Wilder family with your actions?"A string of questions came pouring out, and Sophie was stunned, unable to cover her face anymore. Instead, she looked at Chris in silence."But... but you two are already divorced. As long as you admit that you're divorced, you and Michael could be together!" she said."That's my business."Jessica was never a woman who could be easil

Chris hadn't expected to be dragged into such a situation. Just a moment ago, they had been a deeply affectionate couple, but the next second, with Jordan's sudden appearance, it only made him feel more embarrassed. The show had gone on long enough, and Jessica was starting to feel anxious. She gave Shannon a look, and the latter quickly came over to pull Jordan away."You've all seen it. This child is not mine but Michael's. My marriage with my husband is still intact, and we haven't done anything illegal. Michael came here to prove our innocence. Meeting in the hospital was just a friendly gesture of mutual help. My husband was also there. Do you have any more questions?"In truth, Jessica had no idea Michael was going to show up.At that moment, Jessica had been slightly stunned, and instinctively grabbed Chris's hand, afraid that if she let go, he would disappear. The clarification in front of so many eyes forced Michael to speak up."Yes," said Michael, struggling. "I didn't

With that thought in mind, Chris smiled, reaching out to pull Jessica tighter into his arms. "No, my wife and Mr. Hall's past relationship is already a thing of the past. We have a good relationship now. I kindly ask everyone not to spread rumors," he said."Does Mr. Green know that Ms. Wilder accompanied Mr. Hall and his child to the hospital?" a reporter asked.Chris replied, "Of course I know. Didn't you know I work at that hospital? Jessica also invested in that hospital, so naturally, she would take Mr. Hall's child there."Jessica furrowed her brow slightly. She had planned to have Shannon help Chris resign, but now that Chris had mentioned working at the hospital on camera, he couldn't resign anytime soon.Otherwise, it would look staged. So, this was Chris's counterattack? She had thought that Chris was easy to control. Over the years, he had always been obedient, docile, and followed all her suggestions. But recently, Chris seemed like a porcupine, full of spikes, mak

Jessica had already hung up the phone. She glanced at Chris's bloodshot eyes, then casually instructed the driver to go to the company.Who could have leaked this information?During Michael's time back in the country, he had kept a low profile. If it hadn't been for Jordan getting sick, he probably wouldn't have even left the house. So who would want to use Michael to target her?The target had to be her. Michael was no longer of use to the Hall family, and with the child, who would go after Michael?Except for Chris.Thinking of the person beside her, Jessica was still angry.Twice, he had almost left."Stop thinking about it, just stay at home and behave yourself," said Jessica.Chris tried to grab the bag, wanting Jessica to take a good look at their divorce certificate. Even though she didn't know, they were already divorced. The car stopped in front of the Wilder Group's office building. Chris didn't make any move to get out. "We're already divorced. Why are you still putting on this act?" Chris lowered his gaze, quietly staring at her fair hand. He was actually surprised at how strong Jessica was as a woman. He asked in return, "Don't tell me, you really fell in love with me?""I...""Jessica, this is hilarious."A person who hadn't fallen in love in five years suddenly realized they love someone after a divorce? What was even more ridiculous was the fact that her first love was still openly living in her house. Was that even love?If it was, then it would truly cheapen the word.Jessica endured the sarcasm and ridicule, tilting her head to look at Chris for a long time, as if she was meeting this sharp-tongued Chris for the first time.In the past five years, she had grown accustomed to Chris's submissiveness, even his somewhat weak willingness to be at her beck and call. But now, something had changed. He had become prickly since Michael's appearance, unwilling to let go."Are you jealous?" "Hey, sir!" The flight attendant was pushed aside, so he tried to steady himself against the wall. He pointed at Chris and shouted, "He's here! He's here!"Jessica immediately instructed her people to surround Chris. She walked toward him, step by step, and finally stopped right in front of him.Chris tightly held onto his ticket and passport, while Jessica only stared into his eyes. With a slight force from one hand, she snatched them away from his grasp and tossed them to a bodyguard behind her."I haven't agreed yet. Where do you think you're going?""We're already divorced. It's my freedom to go wherever I want. Are you going to restrict my personal freedom? I can sue you!"Jessica smiled, mocking his naivety. "We've been married for five years, and you're still this cute."After that, she waved her hand, and two bodyguards immediately moved to restrain him, one on each side.Chris didn't want to shout or act crazy, but the flight attendants, who were watching yet didn't da
