Chapter 3

Author: Do Re Mi Fa
The next day at noon, I led my parents through the door of the luxury private room on the top floor.

Aria and Jessica were already seated at the head of the table.

Jessica had clearly dressed up today.

When she noticed us enter, she did not even bother to look at us. She just picked up her teacup and took her sweet time brushing the foam aside.

“Have a seat,” Aria said as she pointed to the seats farthest from them.

Her casual tone made her sound like she was addressing servants.

I guided my parents to their seats. Both of them looked uncomfortable.

My father had put on his cleanest white shirt for the occasion, even though the collar was a little yellowed from age.

Still, he sat up straight, determined not to make me look bad.

Jessica finally put down her teacup and said, “Let’s order food.”

She gave my parents a once-over, like she was inspecting something she had already decided was beneath her.

“I know you folks from the countryside don’t get to eat anything decent. So today’s meal is on us. Consider it a little taste of the good life.”

With that, she waved the waiter over and rattled off a whole spread of seafood, including lobster, king crab, and raw oysters like it was nothing.

“Mrs. Zimmer,” I said coldly, “Aria is three months pregnant. Her doctor said that she shouldn’t be eating raw or cold seafood. It’s not good for the baby.”

Jessica shot me a sidelong glance.

“Our family has money. What’s the big deal about eating some seafood? You’re a grown man, and you’re already this controlling? After you marry Aria, are you going to micromanage every little thing she does?

“Philip, marrying her is like winning the lottery for your family. You should be counting your blessings.”

She smirked mockingly.

“But let me be upfront. Our family has high standards. If you can’t take care of her properly after the wedding, then get out of our house. Don’t just take up space if you’re not pulling your weight.”

The atmosphere turned tense after she said that.

My father’s face turned red with rage. He slammed his hand on the table and shot to his feet, his entire body trembling.

“What exactly are you trying to say? Philip graduated from an Ivy League university. He’s a decent, respectable young man. How did he suddenly become some kind of servant in your eyes?

“If you don’t want this wedding to happen, just say it outright. There’s no need to drag us through the mud like this!”

“Oh my, such a temper.”

Jessica was startled by my father. She then dramatically patted her chest and turned to Aria.

“Aria, take a good look. This is the man you’re so dead set on marrying. His whole family is full of rude country bumpkins. Why is he slamming tables at me?”

Aria’s expression darkened. She snapped at me, “Philip, are you going to do something about your father or not? My mom is older. What’s wrong with her pointing out a few things? Is this your idea of coming to apologize?”

“Apologize?” I chuckled as I slowly stood up and pulled out a jewelry box as well as a transfer receipt from my bag.

I slammed them heavily onto the glass table and slid it to Jessica.

“Aria, did you get water in your head? Can you not understand plain English?”

I looked at this absurd mother-daughter duo as I said resolutely, “I didn’t bring my parents here today to eat your seafood dinner. I didn’t come here to apologize either.”

I smiled.

“I’m here to call off the wedding!”

Aria sank deeper into despair and pain, and her fixation on me turned obsessive and unhealthy. She clung to the delusion that finding me and begging me for forgiveness would somehow put her shattered life back together. She pawned the last of her valuable jewelry. Behind Jessica’s back, she quietly sold the apartment that was supposed to be our home after we got married. She returned my million dollars and used what little money she had left to hire a private investigator. After months of searching, she finally traced my whereabouts to a city in the south. She could not afford a plane ticket and was too afraid to tell her mother, so she set out alone, pushing a wheelchair at first, then trading it for a pair of battered crutches when the chair slowed her down. She spent days and nights on a slow train, traveling almost two thousand miles across the country to find my city. The once-proud, wealthy heiress was now a gaunt, sunken-eyed woman. She wore a dirty old trench coat, and

Time flew by, and a year passed in the blink of an eye.The climate in the south was warm and pleasant. It was a far cry from the biting, dry cold of Nexus.Back in my hometown, surrounded by gentle breezes and soft rain, I finally left the shadows of the past behind. Thanks to careful care, my father’s leg had healed completely. He still had a slight limp, but he could already go to the park every morning to take a walk with the other seniors. My mother no longer felt depressed. Instead, she had joined a community choir and was happily occupied every day.As for me, I worked at a local branch of my company. I had leveraged the outstanding work skills I had honed in Nexus and my relentless drive to secure two consecutive promotions. I became department head, achieving both financial independence and a renewed sense of self-respect.More importantly, I met Crystal Xanders. She was a representative from one of our company’s partner firms. She was gentle, poised, mature, and shar

(1st POV)Aria started to panic and regretted how she had treated me.She could not accept the fact that I had actually sued her and abandoned her. She thought that I could not live without her. How could I have the courage to do something so ruthless?“I need to find him! Yes, I can try the train station or the airport!”Like a madwoman, she scrambled up from the floor and rushed out the door. She did not even close the car door properly before flooring the accelerator. The evening rush hour in Nexus was gridlocked, yet she darted through traffic like a maniac with no regard for her life. Her mind was consumed by that court summons and the cold, resolute look I had given her at the restaurant that day.“Philip, you can’t leave... You can’t do this to me!”She slammed the gas pedal and pounded the steering wheel, barely holding it together. At the overpass ramp to the train station, the light turned red.Aria was so consumed with the thought of stopping me before the train de

That afternoon, I arrived at the hospital on time.My father’s condition had stabilized. The doctor said that with proper rest and regular check-ups, there would not be any severe aftereffects.“Dad, Mom, let’s go home,” I said firmly.I pushed my father, who was seated in a wheelchair, and held my mother’s hand. “Yes, let’s go home! We’re never setting foot in this lousy place again!” My father nodded, and his eyes turned teary. This time, we chose comfortable business-class seats on the train. As the train slowly pulled out of Nexus Station, the scenery outside the window began to blur, then recede at breakneck speed as we picked up momentum.I took out my phone and canceled the number I had used for five years. Then I blocked Aria, Jessica, and every one of their relatives on my phone, on WhatsApp, and on every social media platform. After that, I removed the old SIM card and flushed it down the toilet in the train’s restroom.Goodbye to five years of my youth. I had wa

I booked a high-end hotel near my father’s hospital. He had just come out of surgery for a broken leg, and my mother was already scared enough. I could not let them find out what was really going on. I also needed a place where the Zimmer family could not reach me. The hotel was private and discreet, perfect for lying low.I told my mother my company had an urgent training retreat that would last three days and that I would not have phone access during that time. I assured her that she could focus on staying with my father at the hospital. The caregiver would handle everything else.During those three days, my phone remained unusually quiet.Apart from a few messages in the work group chat, Aria did not call or text me. She never asked how my father’s leg was doing, nor did she show any concern for me. It was as if the person she had pushed down the stairs at the restaurant that day was nothing more than a stray dog that did not matter. On the third night, I leaned against th

I sat in the ambulance, tightly holding my father’s cold, calloused hand. The paramedic was applying a splint to his leg. When they cut his pant leg open, the sight of the injury hit me like a punch to the gut.My mother sat beside me, covering her mouth as she wept silently. Her tears fell onto the stretcher. My father’s lips turned purple from the pain. Still, he forced himself to comfort me. “Philip... I’m fine. It’s just a little sprain. Don’t cry...”“Dad, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry...”I buried my face in his palm, and I could not stop crying.I was the one who had been blind. I was the one who had let a wolf through the door. Because of that, my father, the man who raised me, had ended up paying the price for nothing. At the hospital, I moved from counter to counter like I was on autopilot. When the result came back, the doctor said his right shin was shattered and that he needed surgery right away to put in a metal plate.I spent everything I had on a private room and a
