Chapter 3

Author: Rituals
"I have worked for Madam for decades. I recognize only her and no one else. I will never take orders from anyone but her."

As Dotty spoke, she yanked Maeve down the stairs as if lifting a chick by the scruff of its neck, shoved her in front of Jess and Clarisse, and shouted sharply, "Didn't you hear Madam calling you? Hurry up and kneel to Miss Clarisse and apologize!"

Clarisse lifted her chin, stuck out her dirty shoe, and planted her hands on her hips as she glared at Maeve.

"Not only do you have to kneel and apologize—you have to kneel down and lick my shoes clean! My mom said raising you is like raising a puppy. Puppies lick their owner's shoes. That's only natural!"

Before my eyes, my daughter—who had always been proud and obsessed with cleanliness—actually bent her knees and assumed the posture of kneeling down to lick the shoe.

"Maeve, don't!" I grabbed her at once and pressed my hands firmly on her shoulders. "Don't be afraid. Mommy is here. You're Mommy's precious girl. Don't believe them. You're not a bastard."

"B-but…" Maeve shook her head in fear, and tears finally fell. "But the teacher said I'm an illegitimate child. Clarisse and Dotty said I'm an illegitimate child too… Daddy doesn't love me anymore…"

I wiped the tears from her face and looked up at Jess, murderous fury burning in my eyes.

"Jess, you've destroyed my daughter. I will never let you off."

Jess didn't care in the slightest. Instead, she laughed.

"Let me off? You should think about how you're going to save yourself first. Today is Clarisse's birthday party. You came here to make trouble and even tried to hit me and Clarisse. If I don't teach you a lesson, you won't know your place!"

She shot a look at the bodyguards by the door.

"Seize them! Make the mother and daughter kneel and apologize to Clarisse. If they don't apologize, don't let them leave!"

The two bodyguards rushed forward to restrain me.

Maeve clung tightly to me in terror and cried out, "Mommy, just kneel down. I don't want you to get beaten. I'm an illegitimate child. I'll apologize to Clarisse…"

"Don't say that!" I cut her off, heart aching with fury. "Maeve, you've done nothing wrong. They're the ones who are wrong! Why should we apologize?"

But Maeve only cried harder, her whole body trembling.

Seeing her in this state felt like countless needles stabbing into my heart.

This was all forced on her by Jess and Clarisse! They hadn't just abused my daughter—they had shattered her spirit!

"I'll count to three. If you still don't kneel, don't blame me for being ruthless!"

Jess crossed her arms, her voice icy.

"One!"

"Two!"

I held Maeve tightly. "I won't kneel! Even if I die, I will not let my daughter suffer this humiliation!"

"Three!"

Jess shouted at the bodyguards, "Hit them! Beat them until they kneel!"

Clarisse seized the moment and rushed over, reaching out to grab Maeve's hair.

"You illegitimate child—get out of my family!"

"Don't touch her!" I roared and shoved Clarisse away with one hand.

She fell to the ground and burst into loud sobs.

Seeing this, Jess screamed and lunged at me.

"How dare you push Clarisse! I'll kill you!"

She raised her hand to slap my face. I turned aside, grabbed her wrist, and flung it hard to the side.

Jess lost her balance and crashed into the cake table nearby. Cream and cake crumbs splattered all over her.

"Mommy!" Clarisse ran crying into Jess's arms. "She bullied us! Call Daddy! Hurry and call Daddy!"

At that moment, the villa doors were pushed open, and a figure stormed in, seething with rage.

"Who dares cause trouble at my daughter's birthday party?!"

Jess looked as if she had seen a savior and immediately rushed toward him, crying.

"Aaron! You're finally back! This bitch hit us! Save us!"

Clarisse cried out as well, "Daddy! This bad woman bullied Mommy and me! Punish her and that illegitimate child!"

Under everyone's gaze, Aaron slowly turned his head, and his eyes locked onto me.

"Aaron darling, don't believe her!" Jess pleaded."Frame you?" I gave a cold laugh. "Do you really think you're worth framing? When the Conrad family investigates something, there has never been a case we couldn't uncover."Aaron lifted his head and stared at Jess."You… you actually lied to me! You've been lying to me all along!""I didn't! I didn't lie to you!" Jess continued to argue. "I love you! Those things are all misunderstandings. Selene did this on purpose to drive a wedge between us! You have to believe me!"Watching them tear into each other like rabid dogs, I couldn't help but smile."Oh, right, Aaron—there's one more thing I forgot to tell you."His body stiffened as he slowly turned to look at me."Are you really sure Clarisse is your child?"With that, I picked Maeve up and walked away without looking back. The chaos and screaming behind me no longer had anything to do with me.Before long, the Meyer family collapsed completely.Aaron fell from grace. "Aaron! Are you even a man? You were the one who came after me first! And now that something's gone wrong, you want to dump all the blame on me? You coward!" Jess shrieked."Shut up, you bitch! She threw herself at him, and the two of them began grappling and screaming at each other."Stop putting on this pathetic show. It disgusts me." I waved my hand as if brushing away an annoying fly and spoke coldly.Aaron froze at once. He turned back to me and dropped to his knees, pleading desperately."Selene, I'm begging you—spare my family! I'll give you the company back. I'll give you all my assets. I just want to stay alive! Maeve still needs her father. For Maeve's sake, please forgive me this once!"At the mention of Maeve, a colder killing intent flashed through my eyes.He had the nerve to bring up Maeve? When he allowed Jess and Clarisse to bully her, did he

Aaron immediately chimed in as well."That's right! Selene, stop pretending! If you were really the eldest daughter of the Conrad family, would you have needed to live with me for eight years?"If you wanted to fake an identity, you should've picked a more believable one! The Conrad family is a top-tier elite family—how dare you try to impersonate them? You're courting death!"I looked at them coldly, watching their self-deception without bothering to argue. Instead, I lifted my gaze to the middle-aged man beside me and said calmly, "Three minutes. I want the Meyer family bankrupt.""Yes, Miss."The middle-aged man answered without hesitation. He immediately took out his phone and sent several messages in quick succession.Aaron froze for a moment, then burst out laughing."Selene, have you finally gone completely insane? Bankrupt my family in three minutes? Who do you think you are? The Conrad family's eldest daughter? You must still be dreaming!"Jess sneered as well. "Honey,

Stumbling forward, he rushed toward the middle-aged man, plastering on an ingratiating smile."You must be a distinguished guest from the Conrad family! What an honor!"I never imagined the Conrad family would take an interest in my daughter's birthday party. Are you here to discuss a potential collaboration?"Please rest assured—if the Conrad family is willing to give us a chance, the Meyer family will go all out. We'd go through fire and water without hesitation!"As he spoke,

"Everyone, don't let her ruin your mood. The birthday party will continue. Eat, drink, and enjoy yourselves!" Aaron said.Seeing this, the guests quickly echoed him."Aaron is too polite. This is nothing worth fussing over.""Exactly. Just take this crazy woman away so she doesn't spoil the fun.""Clarisse's birthday party is what matters. Let's keep celebrating."Aaron nodded in satisfaction, then turned and barked an order at the bodyguards by the door."What are you standing there for? Seize this crazy woman and that little bastard! Pushing through the onlookers, I drove my foot straight into his groin.Aaron cried out in pain, clutching himself as his body curled in on itself."Selene! Are you out of your damn mind?!"After catching his breath, he lifted his head and roared.Seeing this, Jess ignored the cream and cake smeared all over her and rushed to his side."Aaron! Are you okay? That bitch actually dared to hit you! She's completely insane!"Clarisse sobbed and chimed in, "Daddy! Beat this bad woman! Make her pay for it! She hit Mommy and me; she even tried to ruin my birthday party!"Gritting his teeth through the pain, Aaron growled, "You crazy woman! You're nothing but a nanny our family hired!
