Chapter 3

Author: Sue Purple
That was the first I had ever heard of this childhood friend of Matteo's.

From then on, Matteo changed.

He began to grow disdainful of me, claiming I wasn't gentle enough, that I only knew how to fight and kill, that I always used my past contributions to walk all over him.

In fact, when I confronted him about his relationship with Isabella, he had impatiently retorted, "Francesca, can you stop being so petty? I only see Bella as a younger sister. As someone older and the Don's wife, can't you be more magnanimous?"

Younger sister, my ass!

What sort of older brother would leave his wife, who was recovering from surgery, alone at the hospital while he went off to celebrate his younger sister's birthday?

What sort of older brother would immediately abandon his wife on their wedding anniversary, all because his younger sister called to say she was afraid of thunder and needed his company?

The icing on the cake was when someone actually addressed Isabella as "Second Donna". Not only did Matteo not correct them, but he even smiled, his silence as good as an admission.

The night we decided on our wedding date, I happened to see his chat with Isabella.

Isabella had asked, "If I had been back earlier, would you have married Francesca or me?"

Matteo's reply was, "You. You're the only woman I love, the one I want to marry. As for Francesca… she's more like a brother to me, a responsibility."

As it turned out, I was nothing more than a responsibility, while Isabella was his one true love.

Yet, how had it never occurred to him that she was nothing but a useless woman?

If it weren't for me, Matteo would've died countless times before. The Costa family might not even exist anymore!

That day, we had a huge fight.

He leveled such a cold stare on me as he said, "Francesca Marino, could you stop bringing up your contributions and achievements for one second? Even without you, I could've brought the Costa family to glory! If you dare harm even a hair on Bella's head, I'll definitely not let you go!"

That was the final straw that broke the camel's back.

The next day, I gathered all the necessary documents, feeling utterly disheartened. I planned on requesting a divorce at the family meeting, even though I had only just discovered that I was pregnant.

Unfortunately, I never arrived at the venue.

Isabella had conspired with our enemies, causing the family to suffer significant losses. As a result, Matteo had to cancel the meeting at the last minute to salvage the situation.

I was halfway there when Isabella intercepted me.

"Do you think that being pregnant will prevent me from taking your place? Dream on!"

She first knocked me unconscious with a drug, then, worried that I would retaliate after I regained consciousness, she used a sledgehammer to shatter the bones of all four of my limbs.

Following that, jealousy and hate drove her to smash my stomach, over and over again. At last, she caved the back of my head in with a hard swing of the hammer before tossing me into the mine like a piece of trash.

"Matteo refused to marry me, all because you refused to give up your spot, so you only have yourself to blame for this! And you even got pregnant? In that case, you can't fault me for being ruthless! Only with you dead can I get what I want!"

After cleaning up the crime scene, she broke her own leg before stumbling back and putting on a show. She pinned the crime of colluding with enemies on me, claiming that she had realized something was wrong and went to stop me, only for me to attempt to silence her. Her broken leg became undeniable proof of this.

Not only had Matteo believed her, but everyone else had, too.

Back in the present, I glared furiously at Isabella, the urge to rip her apart with my bare hands surging through me.

What right did she have? How was it that the killer who murdered me and my child could live such a happy, blissful life after my death? Not only had she stolen my man from me, but she was even enjoying the riches that should've been mine! Everything she had now had been gained from my death!

Reaching out a finger, Isabella drew circles on Matteo's chest as she asked shyly, "Matteo, after tomorrow's wedding, I'll be able to officially call you my husband, right?"

Matteo snatched her hand up to press a kiss to it. "Of course. You'll become the new Donna of the Costa family. As for Francesca, she'd better be dead out there somewhere in a ditch. Even if she isn't, she'd better not dare to come back. If she did, I'll cut her up into pieces to take revenge for you."

A bitter laugh left my lips when I heard that.

I thought, "Matteo, you have already cut me up. The body you had the coroner examine earlier was me!"

During the family meeting, Matteo sat at the head of the table. The urn containing my ashes had been set down beside him."I called everyone here today for one thing only." He reached a hand out to stroke my urn before continuing in a flat voice, "To clear the honor of Francesca Marino, the previous Donna."Taking a deep breath, he went on, "Two years ago, I was blind to the truth behind the treason incident and wrongly believed Isabella Rossi. The one to leak the family secrets was none other than Isabella. Francesca didn't betray us. Even till her death, she was loyal to the Costa family."In an instant, the room exploded into chaos.Luciano leaped to his feet, his eyes red-rimmed as he bowed his head in respect at my urn."Donna Francesca, I failed you! I truly deserve death!"The others were quick to follow in his footsteps. Those who had once spat upon my corpse were now fervently expressing their regrets and apologies.Matteo simply watched them, his gaze desolate."Wha

The underground chamber reeked of the coppery stench of blood and musty mold.Isabella was still shrieking at the top of her lungs when she was dragged in by two MadeMans."Release me! I'm the Donna of the Costa family! And I'm also carrying the future heir!"Matteo! Matteo, where are you? They're rebelling against you!"It wasn't until she spotted Matteo sitting in the shadows that she stopped yelling. However, the tears came next, making her appear utterly pitiful."Matteo, hurry up and save me! They've gone crazy and actually had the nerve to lay their hands on me!"Nonetheless, Matteo didn't speak, merely watching her performance in silence. In the past, every time Isabella cried, it tugged at his heartstrings. Now, however, all he felt was disgust."The future heir?" Matteo took a drag on his cigar. "Are you referring to the bastard you killed my son to have?"Isabella's crying abruptly stopped as her eyes widened in shock and fear. "Y-You know everything already? N-No, w

Paolo was quite efficient. Within a day, he was placing a thick stack of papers detailing the results of his investigation before Matteo. At the same time, he brought in two tightly bound men, one of whom was Giovanni.Giovanni was a useless and cowardly man, already wetting his pants even before they started interrogating him."Don Costa, have mercy! I was only acting under the orders of that bitch, Isabella! I was just a driver, nothing more! I don't know anything!"Reclining in his chair, Matteo tossed a dagger up and down, the look in his eyes reminiscent of a demon."You were just a driver? So while Isabella was breaking my wife's limbs, you were still only in charge of driving, yes?"Giovanni was quick to throw Isabella under the bus. "I didn't do anything, I swear! It was Isabella! She said that if Francesca didn't die, then she wouldn't be able to become the Donna! She also insisted on breaking all of Francesca's limbs, claiming it was so we'd be safe if Francesca woke u

A hesitant expression crossed Paolo's face. "But… wasn't Ms. Rossi hospitalized that day for a broken leg?""I said, look into her!" Matteo's head whipped around, his gaze so sharp that it could cut the air. "If you fail to find anything, then you can go keep her company in the mine!"Fear sent Paolo scrambling to obey the order. The moment Matteo entered the manor, Isabella lunged at him with tears streaming down her face."Matteo, you're finally back! I was so worried about you. What happened to Francesca… I'm truly saddened by it as well, even though she… Well, whatever her sins, her death comes first."She reached out, planning to place a hand on Matteo's arm. However, Matteo deftly avoided her hand, his gaze falling on her left leg."Does your leg still hurt?"Isabella blinked in confusion before nodding pitifully. "It still hurts on rainy or humid days. But for the sake of stopping Francesca back then—""Was it broken when you tried to stop her, or when you tried to kil

Matteo's bellow had the coroner jumping in shock, his hands jerking in response. Then, with careful steps, as though the floor was littered with spikes, Matteo slowly made his way over to the autopsy table. The horrid stench of decay assaulted him as he gazed down at the body, the rotting flesh clinging to the skeleton like black mud. It was truly a gruesome and disgusting sight. On a tray nearby lay the misshapen and blackened bullet that was my ring.Matteo reached out a trembling hand but stopped right before he could touch the metal."F-Francesca?" he called out hoarsely and almost warily, as though he were afraid that the body would suddenly come to life and smack him. However, all that answered him was a dead silence.I floated beside him and took in his every response with a cold expression. His earlier words rang in my ears, and I thought, "Matteo, didn't you say you hated me? That you would chop me into pieces? Well, I'm right there! Why aren't you taking action?"The

A hushed silence fell upon the venue.Matteo was gripping his phone so tightly that his fingers had gone pale."Say that again?"With a shaky voice, Paolo uttered, "Don Costa, I had them cross-check the DNA three times. There's no mistake. The coroner even found a misshapen ring on the body's left ring finger. Carved on the inside of the ring are the letters 'C' and 'M'."Matteo's phone fell to the floor with a clatter, cracks spiderwebbing across the screen. That ring was a keepsake between us, a token of the promise he had made me.Years ago, he was shot twice, and I was the one who carried him through the snow for over 12 miles. Upon waking, he had the extracted bullet forged into this ring as he vowed that he would never let me down in this lifetime. From where I was floating in front of him, I could see how all the color instantly drained from his face.I thought, "Matteo, have you finally remembered? You personally slipped that ring onto my finger while promising you woul
