Chapter 4

Author: Sue Purple
After that, as though a string tethered me to him, I was forced to remain by Matteo—forced to watch as he slept with Isabella, tried on their wedding attire, and discussed the details of the ceremony.

It was only then that I discovered that the cold and aloof Matteo I had known could actually be so gentle and thoughtful.

Back when we got married, the Costa family was still relatively weak, so we had only set up a simple feast at home. I hadn't even received a ring.

At the time, I had asked him, "Could we have a wedding ceremony in the future? I want to wear a wedding dress."

He had furrowed his brow as he extinguished his cigar. "Francesca, we live on a knife's edge, and surviving to see another day is already a blessing. Why bother with all that pointless nonsense? Don't let yourself be taken by such pretentious and fanciful thinking."

As it turned out, it wasn't that he couldn't give me a ceremony—he just didn't want to do it for me. He didn't think I was worthy of the effort.

On the day of the wedding, the Costa manor was so bright it seemed a thousand suns were illuminating it. Luxury cars crowded the venue, some even parked all the way to the middle of the mountain.

Matteo was dressed in a pure-white suit, his arm wrapped around Isabella, who wore a million-dollar designer wedding gown. They were greeting the guests who came and accepting the congratulations from all the city's elites.

It was a stark contrast to my wedding, where only a few MadeMans had toasted me in congratulations.

Those same MadeMans—the ones who had gone through hell and high water with me, and the ones who claimed that they would only ever accept me as the Donna—were now all smiles as they addressed Isabella as the Donna.

"Congratulations, Don! Congratulations, Donna!"

Luciano Rinaldi raised his glass in a toast as he added sincerely, "You two really are a perfect match for each other!"

Luciano used to be my right-hand man. Years ago, I was nearly stabbed to death when trying to save him.

Isabella's lips curved into a shy smile. "Grazie, Luciano, but I'm with child, so I can't drink."

"That is truly the greatest blessing for the Costa family!" Luciano's eyes shone with even more respect. "Indeed, only you are worthy of being the Donna of the Costa family. Unlike that crude Francesca, who monopolized the position for so many years yet couldn't even perform the most basic duty—to carry on the lineage.

"What an embarrassment to the family she was!"

Everyone else raised their glasses in fervent agreement.

Isabella smiled, her hand coming up to caress her abdomen.

However, I was utterly dumbfounded at this news.

Isabella was pregnant? That meant the Costa family had a new heir.

I hovered there, watching as they chatted and smiled. I took in the absolute delight on Matteo's face at being a father, yet all I could think of was my own child, of the pitifully small bones that had been crushed and left to rot in the dirt.

"Since the Donna can't drink, you should drink on her behalf, Don Costa!"

Drunk off the alcohol, Luciano couldn't stop congratulating my ex-husband and my murderer before he went off on another tirade.

"Don Costa, forgive my impudence, but it's been two years since that traitor Francesca disappeared. It's about time to capture her and drag her back here! Once we have her, I'll personally punish her, let her have a taste of all the torture methods at our disposal! This shall be my wedding gift to our new Donna!"

The crowd nodded and roared in furious agreement.

"Si! However, even putting her through all that torture isn't enough to wash away her sins!"

Matteo smirked, his silence leaving me breathless with the pain of my heart breaking.

Isabella waved her hand, feigning magnanimity, yet her eyes shone with a triumphant gleam. "Forget it, Luciano. Today is a blessed day, so let's not bring up Francesca… Maybe she has her reasons."

Hearing that, Luciano scoffed and sneered, "What reasons could she possibly have? She's nothing but a greedy and wicked woman! Your kindness knows no bounds, Donna. If it had been anyone else, they would've hated her and cursed her to the depths of hell after what she did!"

An adoring expression painted Matteo's face as he stroked Isabella's hair gently. "Alright, let's not talk about that traitor anymore. It'll just bring bad luck. In a way, her leaving was one of the best things to happen to me. Otherwise, how could I have been able to marry such a wonderful wife as you?"

During the family meeting, Matteo sat at the head of the table. The urn containing my ashes had been set down beside him."I called everyone here today for one thing only." He reached a hand out to stroke my urn before continuing in a flat voice, "To clear the honor of Francesca Marino, the previous Donna."Taking a deep breath, he went on, "Two years ago, I was blind to the truth behind the treason incident and wrongly believed Isabella Rossi. The one to leak the family secrets was none other than Isabella. Francesca didn't betray us. Even till her death, she was loyal to the Costa family."In an instant, the room exploded into chaos.Luciano leaped to his feet, his eyes red-rimmed as he bowed his head in respect at my urn."Donna Francesca, I failed you! I truly deserve death!"The others were quick to follow in his footsteps. Those who had once spat upon my corpse were now fervently expressing their regrets and apologies.Matteo simply watched them, his gaze desolate."Wha

The underground chamber reeked of the coppery stench of blood and musty mold.Isabella was still shrieking at the top of her lungs when she was dragged in by two MadeMans."Release me! I'm the Donna of the Costa family! And I'm also carrying the future heir!"Matteo! Matteo, where are you? They're rebelling against you!"It wasn't until she spotted Matteo sitting in the shadows that she stopped yelling. However, the tears came next, making her appear utterly pitiful."Matteo, hurry up and save me! They've gone crazy and actually had the nerve to lay their hands on me!"Nonetheless, Matteo didn't speak, merely watching her performance in silence. In the past, every time Isabella cried, it tugged at his heartstrings. Now, however, all he felt was disgust."The future heir?" Matteo took a drag on his cigar. "Are you referring to the bastard you killed my son to have?"Isabella's crying abruptly stopped as her eyes widened in shock and fear. "Y-You know everything already? N-No, w

Paolo was quite efficient. Within a day, he was placing a thick stack of papers detailing the results of his investigation before Matteo. At the same time, he brought in two tightly bound men, one of whom was Giovanni.Giovanni was a useless and cowardly man, already wetting his pants even before they started interrogating him."Don Costa, have mercy! I was only acting under the orders of that bitch, Isabella! I was just a driver, nothing more! I don't know anything!"Reclining in his chair, Matteo tossed a dagger up and down, the look in his eyes reminiscent of a demon."You were just a driver? So while Isabella was breaking my wife's limbs, you were still only in charge of driving, yes?"Giovanni was quick to throw Isabella under the bus. "I didn't do anything, I swear! It was Isabella! She said that if Francesca didn't die, then she wouldn't be able to become the Donna! She also insisted on breaking all of Francesca's limbs, claiming it was so we'd be safe if Francesca woke u

A hesitant expression crossed Paolo's face. "But… wasn't Ms. Rossi hospitalized that day for a broken leg?""I said, look into her!" Matteo's head whipped around, his gaze so sharp that it could cut the air. "If you fail to find anything, then you can go keep her company in the mine!"Fear sent Paolo scrambling to obey the order. The moment Matteo entered the manor, Isabella lunged at him with tears streaming down her face."Matteo, you're finally back! I was so worried about you. What happened to Francesca… I'm truly saddened by it as well, even though she… Well, whatever her sins, her death comes first."She reached out, planning to place a hand on Matteo's arm. However, Matteo deftly avoided her hand, his gaze falling on her left leg."Does your leg still hurt?"Isabella blinked in confusion before nodding pitifully. "It still hurts on rainy or humid days. But for the sake of stopping Francesca back then—""Was it broken when you tried to stop her, or when you tried to kil

Matteo's bellow had the coroner jumping in shock, his hands jerking in response. Then, with careful steps, as though the floor was littered with spikes, Matteo slowly made his way over to the autopsy table. The horrid stench of decay assaulted him as he gazed down at the body, the rotting flesh clinging to the skeleton like black mud. It was truly a gruesome and disgusting sight. On a tray nearby lay the misshapen and blackened bullet that was my ring.Matteo reached out a trembling hand but stopped right before he could touch the metal."F-Francesca?" he called out hoarsely and almost warily, as though he were afraid that the body would suddenly come to life and smack him. However, all that answered him was a dead silence.I floated beside him and took in his every response with a cold expression. His earlier words rang in my ears, and I thought, "Matteo, didn't you say you hated me? That you would chop me into pieces? Well, I'm right there! Why aren't you taking action?"The

A hushed silence fell upon the venue.Matteo was gripping his phone so tightly that his fingers had gone pale."Say that again?"With a shaky voice, Paolo uttered, "Don Costa, I had them cross-check the DNA three times. There's no mistake. The coroner even found a misshapen ring on the body's left ring finger. Carved on the inside of the ring are the letters 'C' and 'M'."Matteo's phone fell to the floor with a clatter, cracks spiderwebbing across the screen. That ring was a keepsake between us, a token of the promise he had made me.Years ago, he was shot twice, and I was the one who carried him through the snow for over 12 miles. Upon waking, he had the extracted bullet forged into this ring as he vowed that he would never let me down in this lifetime. From where I was floating in front of him, I could see how all the color instantly drained from his face.I thought, "Matteo, have you finally remembered? You personally slipped that ring onto my finger while promising you woul
