Chapter 1

Serena's POV

The freezing wind whipped snow into my face.

I'd picked out a thin, off-the-shoulder silk evening gown for tonight, hoping to dance with Alessio Valenti at the castle.

I'd figured I'd be warm enough in the car, and the castle had heated floors, so I wouldn't have to worry about the cold. I never imagined I would end up stranded on the winding road leading up to the castle.

The road was deserted, with no streetlights for miles. Darkness stretched in every direction, threatening to swallow me whole as fear crept over me.

I turned on my phone's flashlight and stumbled downhill, struggling to keep my footing.

The wind was so strong I could barely stay upright, and I'd already lost all feeling in my exposed skin. If I didn't make it down the mountain and find a ride home soon, I knew I would freeze to death out here.

Years ago, I'd developed post-traumatic stress disorder after a car accident.

Alessio had brought in a team of the country's top psychiatrists to assess my condition. They'd concluded that it wasn't severe and that a few rounds of exposure therapy would be enough to help me recover.

But Alessio had always spoiled me rotten. He couldn't bear to see me go through something so distressing.

He'd held me close and promised, "Tesoro, no matter where I am or what I'm doing, if you need me, I'll drop everything and come straight to you."

And he'd kept his word.

Six months ago, I never would have imagined finding myself in a situation like this. Back then, Alessio would drive me wherever I needed to go. No matter how busy he was, he would make time for me whenever he could.

Even if he was stuck in negotiations worth tens of millions of dollars and couldn't leave, one call from me was all it took for him to send an entire fleet of cars to pick me up.

"My wife depends on me, and I wouldn't have it any other way!" He used to brag about it to his subordinates all the time.

But everything changed six months ago, when Bianca Moretti came back to the country.

It was my birthday that day. Alessio was driving me to our country estate for a little getaway when Bianca called.

Without a second thought, he turned the car around. "Sweetheart, some creeps have been following Bianca around. She's scared out of her mind. I have to go get her."

He sounded frantic as he floored the accelerator, pushing the car to nearly 120 miles per hour.

The sudden acceleration and violent jolting brought back the trauma of my accident. My head started spinning, and I couldn't stop gagging.

Only then did Alessio finally slow down and pull over. "I'll send a driver to pick you up. Sweetheart, go on ahead to the estate and wait for me. I'll take Bianca home, then come straight over to be with you."

Before I could even catch my breath, let alone answer him, he'd already driven off.

Remembering that day, I glanced at my phone again. The battery was down to one percent.

Shivering in the freezing wind, I called Alessio one last time before my phone died.

But Bianca answered instead. "Good evening, Donna Valenti! Looking for Alessio? I got some cake on my dress earlier, so he's washing it for me."

Third-Person POVAlessio sat alone in the first-class cabin, staring at his phone by the window. On the screen was a photo of him and Serena. He found Serena's number and pulled up their recorded conversations. For years, he'd had his phone set to record every call with her automatically. He listened to them over and over, from the times she'd sweet-talked him into doing things for her to the call she'd made after he'd abandoned her halfway up the mountain on her birthday.Hearing how coldly he'd spoken to her that night felt like a knife twisting in his chest. He scrolled further until he came across a recording from their wedding anniversary. He pressed play.A familiar voice came through the speaker

Serena's POVAlessio looked much worse than the last time I'd seen him.Maybe it was the long flight or the lack of sleep, but dark circles hung beneath his eyes, and he looked completely worn out.Even from where I stood, I could see the anguish on his face as he stared at me. "Serena… y-you're marrying him?"Caspian wrapped an arm around my waist and leaned down to whisper in my ear. "Want me to have him thrown out?"I shook my head and turned to Caspian. "No. If he wants to watch, let him."I stood on my tiptoes and pressed my lips to his.Behind me, Alessio let out a choked cry. I didn't look back. I just kissed Caspian harder. After the ceremony, I gathered my skirts and headed to the bridal suite to change out of my wedding dress and into my reception gown.I'd barely shut the door when a hand reached past me and slammed against it, trapping me against the door. I turned around.Alessio stood right in front of me, his eyes red and bloodshot. "Serena, please. I'm begging

Serena's POVThe plane landed in Bellavere, its city lights glittering against the night sky outside my window. I stepped off the plane and made my way through the jet bridge into the terminal. The airport was quiet this late at night, apart from the occasional announcement and the sound of suitcase wheels rolling across the floor.I spotted Caspian Ferretti as soon as I reached arrivals. He stood near the exit in a long black coat, his silver-gray hair combed neatly back. With his broad shoulders and straight posture, he looked every bit as elegant as he did dangerous. Two bodyguards in black stood a few steps behind him silently. When he saw me, he didn't move. He simply lifted his chin slightly, his eyes sweeping over my face with a cool, measured look.I walked up to him. He stood half a head taller than me. After studying me for another moment, he reached out and pulled me firmly into his arms. His coat was cold from the night air and carried the faint scent of cigars."Lo

Third-Person POVAlessio was changing Bianca's bandages in the master bedroom.Propped up against the pillows, Bianca spoke in a weak voice. "Don Valenti, one of the maids can change my bandages. You don't have to do it yourself."Alessio sat on the edge of the bed, carefully tending to her old wound with practiced hands. He shook his head. "You took a bullet for me. It's only right that I take care of you."Bianca lowered her head, her eyelashes fluttering. "Don Valenti, you're so good to me. Won't Donna Valenti get jealous?"Alessio chuckled. "Of course not. She's been very understanding since she got home. She's probably resting right now. Don't worry about her. Just focus on getting better."Bianca was about to reply when someone knocked on the door."Don Valenti, Ms. Moretti, dinner is ready," the butler announced.Alessio acknowledged him, fastened his cufflinks, and stepped into the hallway. "Go get my wife. Tell her dinner's ready."The butler hesitated. "Is she in the

Serena's POVThe moment Alessio saw me, panic flashed across his face. Almost instinctively, he moved away from Bianca. He hurried over and pulled me into his arms, one hand settling around my waist as he gently scolded me. "Serena… are you okay? Thank God you're home!"I didn't push him away. I let him hold me and answered flatly, "Yeah, I'm home."Alessio paused, clearly surprised by how calm I was.He pulled back and looked me over anxiously. "Where were you last night? Your phone was off, and I couldn't get through. I was worried sick! I almost sent an entire fleet of cars up the mountain to look for you.""The road was closed, so I found a motel and stayed there." I didn't feel like explaining myself, so I made up an excuse and stepped out of his arms.My eyes drifted toward Bianca, who was still lying in bed.She was tucked under my comforter, looking pale as she watched me nervously. "Donna Valenti, I'm so glad you're back. We've been so worried about you…"I ignored he
