Chapter 2

作者: Elin
Countdown: twenty-four hours.

Damon barely came home. Morning till night, he was gone. The promised mating ceremony might as well have never existed.

Sometimes I'd see his friends' social posts. In the corner of some group photo, there was always a shot of him walking beside a woman. That face. The one I'd seen in his phone gallery.

Late that night, he came back. He hesitated for a long time, then finally said, "The belated ceremony… do we still have time to prepare it?"

I lowered my head. I knew what he really meant—he wanted to cancel it.

Because of Vivian.

"Then cancel it. There aren't many days left anyway." I looked up at him. No need to embarrass either of us.

Damon froze, like he couldn't believe his ears. Then he asked, "You don't care?"

Fair enough. Before, I would've lost it on the spot. Begged for an answer. Made a scene. How many humiliations in this marriage had happened during my meltdowns? Even though every single one of them started with him.

I shook my head. "Why would I care? It's just a ritual."

A long silence. Then Damon spoke again, almost hesitant. "How about I take you down to Southaven in a few days? Relax a little."

I glanced at the countdown on my phone and said no.

"The beach, then? Or that restaurant you've always wanted to try?" He kept offering, and I kept refusing. By the time he headed out the door, his expression had cycled through awkwardness, guilt, confusion, and finally—displeasure.

Countdown: sixteen hours.

I started moving my things out, little by little. Trying not to let him notice.

But he noticed anyway. "You've been moving a lot out lately."

I nodded and gave him the excuse I'd prepared. "Yeah. Going to stay somewhere else for a while."

He hesitated, then said, "I've been thinking about the ceremony. Maybe we could still have it…"

I cut him off. "There's no time for that anymore. Forget it."

His expression shifted to confusion. "What do you mean, no time? This was always what you wanted. And we've been together for five years now. Maybe it's time to make our relationship public."

Was he actually thinking that way? Maybe after five years, he'd finally started to forget Vivian?

I hesitated for a moment. Almost told him about the dissolution agreement I'd already signed.

Then Vivian's name lit up his phone screen. Perfect timing.

I smiled. "Go handle your thing. We can talk later."

Damon grabbed the door handle. Then, as if to make up for something, he turned back and made me a promise. "The ceremony is still on. I'll be back that day."

I watched his hurried back and said nothing.

Countdown: twelve hours.

I got an anonymous video. Vivian in a white dress. Damon in a suit. People all around them, toasting and laughing.

My quiet, empty room couldn't have been more different.

So he really never loved me.

A few drops landed on the screen. I turned off my phone and sat in the dark until late night.

Countdown: three hours. I finished packing everything.

Countdown: two hours. I cut him out of every photo. The album only had me left.

Countdown: one hour. I laid the dissolution agreement neatly on the table.

I thought about leaving some words for him. Changed my mind.

I could only say it in my heart:

"Damon, I loved you for ten years. Loving someone for ten years is hard. But I finally chose to let go."

"Congratulations to you. And congratulations to me."

I grabbed my suitcase. At the very last second of the countdown, my hand touched the doorknob.

It was over. My mating bond.

Then the door opened from the outside.

Damon stood there, forehead sweaty, breathing hard. A smile on his face, still tinged with guilt. "Sorry, something came up. Why aren't you dressed?"

His voice stopped. His eyes dropped to my suitcase. To the ticket in my hand.

"Where are you going?"

Turns out, Leo was telling the truth.I went back to my office and pulled out the lease agreement. Checked the landlord's name. Davenport. Not Leo's last name. I called him, confused. He laughed. "That's my mother's name. She's off fishing somewhere in the Pacific—has been for three years. Left me in charge of everything." A pause. "So technically, yeah. It's me."My jaw dropped.I walked back downstairs and cleaned out every cake in his shop. Every single one. Packed them into boxes and carried them upstairs to share with Tina. And I didn't pay.But I went back the next day to make up for it. "Yesterday was just a joke," I said. I knew he didn't need the money, so I brought him a small decorative piece—a hand-carved wooden wolf I'd found at a local artisan market. It was exactly what his shop had been missing. Consider it thanks for having my back.Leo examined the wolf, turning it over in his hands. "This is nice," he said. Then, more quietly: "You're trying to push him out of the ma

Mia lay around for two more days before barely recovering enough to function. Her fever broke. Her color returned. She announced she was going to fight for my future, and that very day, she went to negotiate the collaboration with Damon.I heard through the grapevine that Damon had perked up tremendously after learning I agreed to work with him. That he'd smiled for the first time in weeks. That he'd told his assistants to clear his schedule for the project.I could only laugh. The man who wouldn't give me the time of day no matter how I begged back then—now every little thing I did pulled at his heartstrings. A meeting invitation made him happy. A shared document made him hopeful. How was that not funny? The funniest part came when the project was nearly finished. Weeks of work, late nights, tense negotiations. And then, on a random Tuesday afternoon, he decided to declare his love for me in public.Right outside the office building I rented. He looked like some college kid with a cru

Mia arrived a week later and immediately collapsed. Not literally—but close. The climate in Southaven was warmer and more humid than what she was used to. She spent her first two days in her hotel room, pale and sweating, complaining about the heat and the food and the weird-smelling water.I had to go to her hotel and take care of her. Bring her soup. Refill her water glass. Listen to her rant about the terrible air conditioning.Weak as she was, she shoved the next day's client file into my hands. "You have to take this meeting," she said, her voice raspy. "I can't. I'll die."I stared at the file. Then at her. "You're burning up with fever and you're still thinking about work?""Someone has to."I sighed. With her down, I had to take her place. It was both of our businesses anyway. Didn't matter who handled the client meeting. The second I walked into that hotel conference room, I regretted it.I pulled out my phone and called Mia immediately. "You didn't tell me the client is Damon

Mia said she'd come visit me in a while and help expand our business here. We'd been partners for years, and saying goodbye to the old location was bittersweet. I hadn't expected her to follow me all the way here, but honestly? It was an honor.I rented a small workspace here—just a tiny office in a mixed-use building—with only one assistant for now. Her name was Tina. Young, eager, and always hungry.Every day, I'd take her downstairs to the coffee shop on the first floor for little cakes as a reward for all her hard work. It was a ritual now. Our thing. The baker was a young guy. Clean-cut short hair, always wearing a dark blue apron dusted with flour. He didn't talk much, but his cakes were incredible. Light, fluffy, perfectly sweet. Tina drooled over them every single day, swearing they were better than any professional pastry shop in Southaven. That afternoon, Tina was swamped with over a dozen documents to process. Contracts, forms, spreadsheets—the boring stuff that kept the bus

That day at the airport, Damon stood right there in the middle of all those shredded paper scraps.People came and went. Business travelers with rolling suitcases. Families with screaming children. Couples holding hands. Some stared at him. Some whispered behind their hands. A few took out their phones and recorded. All the humiliation he'd never experienced before—none of it made him move an inch. He just stood there, frozen, surrounded by the pieces of our broken bond.He swept all the scraps into a pile and gathered them at his feet. Crouched down and started collecting them, piece by piece, like they were precious. As if guarding that pile of torn paper might bring me back. As if keeping the shreds meant the agreement wasn't real. But I was already on a plane flying to the other side of the country.Layers of clouds drifted past the window—white and soft, like a blanket over the world. The cabin was quiet except for the low hum of the engines. I had no idea about the one-man traged

I watched the shreds of paper fly everywhere and let out a tired sigh. Some landed on my shoulder. I brushed them off."This is a public place," I said calmly. "Don't litter."Damon frowned. Of all the things I could have said, that was what came out? His hands dropped to his sides. The last scraps of paper fell from his fingers. He kicked the scraps aside with his foot and grabbed my arm again, trying to pull me away from the security line. "I don't accept that agreement. Let's re-mate—right now. We'll go to the elders. We'll fix this."I stumbled, then caught myself. Planted my feet. "You signed it. I told you to read the ceremony documents carefully. You didn't look. How is that my fault?"But he wouldn't listen. He just kept pulling. His grip was stronger now—his wolf was surfacing, desperate and confused.I didn't move.He wasn't using real force. He could have dragged me. Could have thrown me over his shoulder and carried me out of there. But he didn't. He was just testing me. Se
