The grand double oak doors of the Axerold Estate clicked shut behind Vanessa, instantly sealing out the hum of heavy machinery and the crisp mountain air.

Inside, the temperature was a steady, refreshing 20°C. The wide marble foyer stretched out before her, bathed in soft, natural sunlight filtering through floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The scent of fresh eucalyptus and polished wood filled the high-ceilinged space. It was silent, pristine, and completely her own.

Vanessa took a slow, deep breath, letting the cool air fill her lungs, washing away the lingering, stagnant memory of Apartment 301’s stairwell.

Instead of heading straight up the grand staircase to her private wing, Vanessa turned toward the side corridor leading out to the west terrace. Through the glass, she could see three stonemasons in heavy leather aprons carefully aligning dark marble slabs along the edge of the pavilion pool.

She pushed open the terrace door, her heels clicking softly against the flagstone.

"Good afternoon, gentlemen," Vanessa said, her voice smooth and carrying easily over the clatter of raw stone.

The three workers paused instantly. The lead mason—a burly, grey-bearded man named Hank—wiped his brow with a towel and pulled off his hard hat, tipping it toward her with genuine deference.

"Afternoon, Miss Axerold," Hank said, offering a warm, respectful smile. "Just finishing up the bullnose edges on the pool coping. We’ll have this section sealed before sunset. And thank you so much again for that food earlier, Miss Axerold! Half the crew’s still talking about it. Best meal we’ve had on a job site in twenty years."

"You're very welcome, Hank," Vanessa replied, scanning the clean, razor-sharp lines of the masonry with a gentle smile. "How are the timber frames holding up near the south wall?"

"Matt checked them himself an hour ago, ma'am," Hank replied, resting his hand against his work belt. "Reinforced every single joint. You've got a fine crew supervisor in him. Guy doesn't miss a single detail."

"I know," Vanessa murmured quietly, her eyes drifting toward the driveway where Matt's truck was parked. She gestured toward the portable cooler resting under the shade of the arbor. "Make sure everyone takes a long break before packing up for the day. There’s cold mineral water and fresh ice in the terrace kitchen if you need to refill."

"Appreciate that deeply, Miss Axerold," Hank said, nodding warmly before putting his hard hat back on. "We'll leave the site spotless before we wrap up."

Surrounding herself with honest, productive people who took pride in their work felt like night and day compared to the ten years she had wasted feeding four parasites in a rotting apartment. Up here, every dollar she spent built something real; down there, every drop of effort she had given was swallowed whole by bitter entitlement.

Vanessa walked into her expansive, sunlit study on the second floor. The room was lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, a massive executive desk positioned to face the sweeping views of the valley below.

She set her designer handbag on the leather blotter, unbuttoned her ivory suit jacket, and draped it neatly over the back of her chair.

Just as she reached for a crystal decanter to pour herself a glass of chilled water, the sleek smartphone on her desk lit up, vibrating rhythmically against the dark wood. The caller ID displayed a familiar name: **Clara**.

Vanessa picked it up, sliding the screen to answer and bringing the phone to her ear as she leaned against the edge of the desk.

"I have been calling you!" Clara exclaimed the instant the line connected, her breath coming out in a sharp, urgent burst. "Where were you? You left him, didn't you?"

"I did," Vanessa replied quietly, her voice smooth, calm, and completely unbothered.

Over the line, Clara let out a long, heavy exhale. "My husband and I were talking about it when we drove down to that house earlier," Clara explained, her tone laced with disgust as she referred to David. "We came by to check on you when we heard about the house.nVanessa, David and I saw him and his sister through the window... seeing Andrea and Veronica in that twisted, compromising state was revolting. The way those two cling to each other is utterly sickening."

Vanessa listened silently, swirling the ice in her glass. "It’s been like that for years, Clara. Guess they don't need to hide it anymore."

"It made my blood boil," Clara said, her voice shaking with residual fury. "Before we left, David told Andrea straight to his face never to call our office. David didn't hesitate—he looked Andrea right in the eyes and told him that we are completely done with that sick family, you know you were the only reason we ever stayed or put up with them for a single second. We warned him not to even try reaching out to us."

"David always did have good instincts," Vanessa murmured, a ghost of a smile touching her lips.

Clara paused, waiting for Vanessa's full reaction, but when the line remained quiet, Vanessa took a slow, deliberate sip of her cold water and spoke softly into the receiver.

"I went there."

The line went dead silent for two full seconds.

"What?" Clara gasped, her voice pitching up in absolute shock.

"Yeah," Vanessa said calmly.

"To do what?" Clara demanded, her professional composure momentarily slipping into pure anxiety. "Vanessa... tell me you didn't. Are you going back to him?"

Vanessa looked out the window down toward the courtyard, watching Matt supervise his workers with steady, quiet focus. A slow, unreadable smile touched the corners of her lips.

"Maybe," Vanessa murmured faintly.

"Vanessa, are you okay?" Clara asked, her voice tight with deep worry. "After everything he's done? After everything his sister and mother said to you?"

Vanessa leaned back against her mahogany desk, her dark eyes glittering with cold, quiet confidence as she swirled the ice cubes against the crystal glass.

"Hmm... what do you think?" Vanessa replied softly.

Clara let out a sharp, incredulous breath on the other end, the sudden realization hitting her like a bolt of lightning. She knew Vanessa better than anyone—Vanessa wasn't faltering, and she certainly wasn't going back to be a victim. She was playing a cold, lethal game of cat and mouse that Andrea's family couldn't possibly comprehend.

"You had me terrified for a second," Clara breathed out, letting out a breathless laugh filled with fierce validation. "You deserve to be happy, Vanessa. You more than deserve it. Put them through hell."

"Thank you, Clara," Vanessa murmured softly. " I will remember your when I decided what to do with them."

She ended the call, dropped her phone onto the dark mahogany desk with a soft click, and walked slowly toward the full-length gilded mirror resting against the mahogany-paneled wall.

Standing before her reflection, Vanessa looked at the woman staring back—her tailored ivory suit uncreased, her hair perfect, her gaze clear, steady, and sharp. The years of silent submission, the disgusting household dynamics, the suffocating heat of Apartment 301—it was all behind her now.

She let out a long, shuddering exhale—a deep, cleansing sigh of absolute relief that seemed to lift ten years of weight off her shoulders.

*Soon, Vanessa,* she thought, her dark eyes flashing in the glass with quiet, lethal promises as her lips curved into a slow, victorious smile. *Soon, they will realize they haven't even seen the worst of it.*

The autumn sun hung high over the rolling private crest of the Axerold Estate, casting long, sharp shadows across the terraced lawns. Up here, three hundred meters above the sprawling city basin, the air was crisp and clear, carrying the clean scent of crushed pine needles, fresh timber, and mountain air. It was a world completely removed from the suffocating, concrete heat trapped in the city streets below. Matt leaned against the raw pine framing of the main gatehouse, a heavy steel tape measure clipped to his leather work belt. Sweat glistened on his broad neck, but unlike the stagnant moisture of the lower districts, this was the honest sweat of physical labor. Around him, the rhythmic hum of high-end construction filled the afternoon—the deep thrum of a hydraulic lift positioning reinforced steel beams, the sharp bite of a circular saw cutting through thick oak planking, and the steady clatter of pneumatic nail guns. "Hey, boss!" one of the senior framers shouted over the noi

"Took you long enough," Andrea breathed out, his voice cracking with a sudden, wild mixture of relief and forced arrogance as he gripped the hot brass doorknob. Vanessa didn't answer right away. She stood framed in the dim concrete corridor, immaculate in her tailored ivory linen suit, completely untouched by the stifling, 42°C heat radiating from the stairwell. In her right hand, she held the sleek, insulated thermal bag, her expression smooth, composed, and unreadable. Her quiet presence carried a sharp, undeniable authority that filled the narrow hallway, turning the grimy passage into her personal stage. Inside, the silence cracked instantly. Veronica pushed herself off the frayed sofa, her red, sweat-streaked eyes widening as she staggered toward the entryway to see who was at the door. For a fraction of a second, absolute shock washed over her face—Vanessa looked so striking, so commanding, so entirely out of reach that it felt like looking at a high-society stranger rather

They practically tumbled back through the threshold of Apartment 301, slamming the heavy iron door shut behind them and sealing themselves right back into the suffocating, heat trap. Inside, the silence was absolute—heavy, foul, and thick with the rancid stench of decaying food in the sink and the suffocating heat baking off the plaster walls. Overhead, the dead ceiling fan hung uselessly like a dark spider, completely still. Susan dropped directly to her knees on the sticky floor tiles, pulling six-year-old Leo into her chest as she broke down into harsh, ragged sobs. The boy’s skin was burning hot, his small shirt soaked through with sweat as he whimpered continuously against her shoulder. "We are trapped!" Susan cried out, her voice raw and breaking. "We can't even step outside to buy water without those vultures putting cameras in our faces! Look at us! Look at what we've become!" Veronica staggered toward the frayed couch, collapsing onto the damp cushions with a heavy, whee

The heavy glass doors of the Axerold Estate main house slid shut with a soft hiss, instantly cutting off the suffocating 40°C heat and the noise of the power tools outside. The cool air conditioning hit Vanessa immediately, fresh and smelling of clean floor polish and wood. Matt walked right behind her, carrying the big market tote into the kitchen and dropping it onto the marble counter with a heavy breath. "Thanks again, Matt," Vanessa said, turning around and taking a small towel to wipe the sweat from her neck. "I know carrying market bags isn't part of your job." Matt laughed, wiping his brow with his sleeve. "Call it site prep, Miss Axerold. Carrying that much meat and peppers in this sun is no joke." Vanessa let out a laugh, shaking her head as she pulled a fresh navy apron out of her bag. "Site prep? You're turning my market run into construction work now?" "Hey, it counts," Matt said with a grin. "Every project needs good site prep. If my crew collapses from hunge

The echo of the slammed front door lingered in the sweltering silence of Apartment 301, leaving the room heavy with the sour stench of decaying food and unwashed linoleum. Andrea stood motionless near the broken hallway mirror, his face drained of every drop of color. His open dress shirt hung loosely off his shoulders, damp with cold sweat. For the first time, the blind arrogance in his eyes faltered, replaced by a hollow, vacant stare as he looked at the silk-wrapped bakery box Clara had left resting on the grimy cabinet. Veronica was the first to snap the silence. "That ungrateful witch!" Veronica shrieked, her voice cracking into a ragged, high-pitched scream. She slammed both fists onto the sticky dining table, sending a cloud of stale dust into the stagnant air. "How dare she! How dare she drag David and Clara into our private business! She paid them to say those things! She hired actors to come to our home and insult my son!" Susan slowly pushed herself off the sofa,
