Stepping out of the main entrance of the residential complex, the heavy, sweltering July air hit Vanessa like a solid wall of lead. The morning sun beat down mercilessly on the concrete pavement, radiating waves of thick distortion off the asphalt—a quiet, sinister preview of the fiery hell that would engulf the entire city in forty short days.

People walked past her in light summer clothing, fanning themselves and complaining about the unusual morning humidity. They were completely oblivious to the horrifying reality ahead: in less than six weeks, this exact sun would melt the soles of their shoes, shatter the municipal power grid, and turn the metropolis into an open, blazing oven.

Her phone vibrated wildly in her palm, buzzing continuously against her skin. Andrea's caller ID flashed across the screen in bold, demanding letters.

Vanessa slid her thumb across the glass, accepted the call, and placed the device against her ear without uttering a single word.

"Where the hell do you think you're going, Vanessa?!" Andrea’s voice exploded through the speaker, dripping with an arrogant, grating sneer. "Are you completely out of your mind?! Making a scene like that over a simple laundry basket and a utility bill?!"

He let out a sharp, condescending laugh that crackled through the receiver.

"Look at yourself. Just take a look at your life! You don't have a single penny left to your name without my family," he scoffed, his tone thick with superiority. "You're an orphan with no real home, no backup plan, and nowhere else to go. Do you really think you can survive out there on your own in this world? You'd be living on the streets in a week, begging for scraps."

When Vanessa didn't respond—when only cold, heavy silence met his arrogant speech—his tone shifted seamlessly into a calculated, weaponized pout.

"Listen to yourself, Vanessa," he said, softening his voice just enough to sound deeply wounded and disappointed. "Leo is in the house crying his eyes out right now, holding his little eyes and asking for his mother. How can you be so utterly heartless? He’s just a six-year-old child! He needs you right now. Are you really going to abandon our son over a ridiculous temper tantrum just because Mom asked you to do a little bit of housework?"

A bitter, cold laugh escaped Vanessa's throat—a sound so hollow and menacing that Andrea's deliberate softness faltered on the line.

"Our son?" Vanessa said, her voice deadpan, quiet, and razor-sharp. "Stop lying to yourself, Andrea. Leo isn't my son. He's the product of your filthy, secret affair with Susan—your own 'adopted sister.' Do you really think I'm still the blind idiot who buys into your pathetic little family theater?"

She took a slow, deliberate breath, her eyes narrowing as she looked toward the hazy horizon.

"I will draft the divorce papers and sign them as soon as humanly possible, Andrea," she added, her tone dropping into an absolute, unshakeable decree. "Because if you don't, I will drag you through the courts, pull every medical record, and make sure every single person you know finds out what kind of sick parasites you all are."

Silence deadened the line for a fraction of a second as the weight of her words hit him. Then, Andrea exploded into absolute, unhinged rage, refusing to believe she was actually serious.

"You're bluffing! You think you can scare me with this pathetic crap?!" he roared, his voice cracking through the speaker in sheer fury. "You've completely lost your mind! Walk out that door and see how far you get! You'll be back on your knees begging for my forgiveness by tonight when you realize you can't even afford a decent meal! You're going to regret this, Vanessa—and I swear to God, I won't be here to save you when you come crawling back!"

*CLICK.*

He slammed the phone down in a fury, terminating the call.

A fraction of a second later, a relentless barrage of angry, frantic text messages began flooding her notification bar:

*‘Send the money for the groceries NOW.’*

*‘The utility bill is due today, stop acting crazy!’*

*‘Leo needs his private tuition paid by noon or they’ll drop him!’*

*‘Don't make me come down there and find you!’*

Vanessa's fingers flew across the touch screen with methodical precision as she typed out her final reply:

*‘Don't waste your breath. From this second on, I am no longer covering a single dime of your living expenses. Pay for your own electricity, pay for your mistress, buy your own food, and feed your own child. We are done.’*

She tapped send without a moment's hesitation. She was done with Andrea and there was no changing her mind.

As she turned the corner and walked down the main commercial avenue toward the financial district, her phone automatically connected to a nearby coffee shop's open Wi-Fi network. A sudden, high-priority chime echoed from her inbox—a formal email notification from her family's estate lawyer.

Her heart skipped a beat. Her thumb hovered over the screen before tapping the attachment to open the official, encrypted bank.

*Dear Ms. Vanessa,*

*Following the final settlement of the family estate and the clearance of international legal proceedings, the liquid capital totaling $50 million USD has cleared probate and is now fully available in your private account...*

Fifty million dollars.

In her previous life, this exact notice had arrived on this exact day at this exact time. Back then, naive, gullible, and desperate to secure her husband's love and approval, she had immediately called Andrea in a panic of joy and transferred every single cent directly into his account.

He had used her inheritance to fund Susan's lavish designer wardrobe, buy luxury European sports cars for his demanding mother, and install a massive, military-grade backup power grid for their apartment building—the very grid they used to keep themselves freezing cold while they locked her out on the balcony to burn alive in the wasteland.

Vanessa stared at the long row of zeroes glowing brightly on the glass screen, a dark, triumphant smile spreading across my face.

Not a single cent of this money would ever touch their greedy, blood-stained hands again. This money was her war chest, her shield, and her absolute weapon.

She immediately opened a premier, high-end real estate application on her phone. Bypassing standard filters, she typed in the exact neighborhood location and pulled up the map view for her ex-husband's complex.

Her eyes locked onto a massive, standalone, gated hilltop villa situated directly across the street—perched on high terrain, directly opposite Andrea's apartment balcony.

In her previous life, that villa belonged to a wealthy foreign investor who fled the country right before the cataclysm, leaving it vacant. From that high vantage point, she would not only have total visual dominance over her ex-family's building, but she could watch them starve and sweat in real-time while enjoying pristine comfort behind reinforced alloy walls.

Setting the search filters to heavy-duty reinforced steel construction, private deep-well water filtration, subterranean storage vaults, and independent off-grid solar infrastructure, she tapped the listing agent's contact button.

She didn't just need a place to live. She needed an impenetrable, self-sustaining fortress capable of surviving fifty-degree heatwaves, armed mobs, and the total collapse of human civilization.

And sitting right across from the parasites who destroyed her, she had forty days left to build it.

The grand double oak doors of the Axerold Estate clicked shut behind Vanessa, instantly sealing out the hum of heavy machinery and the crisp mountain air. Inside, the temperature was a steady, refreshing 20°C. The wide marble foyer stretched out before her, bathed in soft, natural sunlight filtering through floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The scent of fresh eucalyptus and polished wood filled the high-ceilinged space. It was silent, pristine, and completely her own. Vanessa took a slow, deep breath, letting the cool air fill her lungs, washing away the lingering, stagnant memory of Apartment 301’s stairwell. Instead of heading straight up the grand staircase to her private wing, Vanessa turned toward the side corridor leading out to the west terrace. Through the glass, she could see three stonemasons in heavy leather aprons carefully aligning dark marble slabs along the edge of the pavilion pool. She pushed open the terrace door, her heels clicking softly against the flagstone. "

The autumn sun hung high over the rolling private crest of the Axerold Estate, casting long, sharp shadows across the terraced lawns. Up here, three hundred meters above the sprawling city basin, the air was crisp and clear, carrying the clean scent of crushed pine needles, fresh timber, and mountain air. It was a world completely removed from the suffocating, concrete heat trapped in the city streets below. Matt leaned against the raw pine framing of the main gatehouse, a heavy steel tape measure clipped to his leather work belt. Sweat glistened on his broad neck, but unlike the stagnant moisture of the lower districts, this was the honest sweat of physical labor. Around him, the rhythmic hum of high-end construction filled the afternoon—the deep thrum of a hydraulic lift positioning reinforced steel beams, the sharp bite of a circular saw cutting through thick oak planking, and the steady clatter of pneumatic nail guns. "Hey, boss!" one of the senior framers shouted over the noi

"Took you long enough," Andrea breathed out, his voice cracking with a sudden, wild mixture of relief and forced arrogance as he gripped the hot brass doorknob. Vanessa didn't answer right away. She stood framed in the dim concrete corridor, immaculate in her tailored ivory linen suit, completely untouched by the stifling, 42°C heat radiating from the stairwell. In her right hand, she held the sleek, insulated thermal bag, her expression smooth, composed, and unreadable. Her quiet presence carried a sharp, undeniable authority that filled the narrow hallway, turning the grimy passage into her personal stage. Inside, the silence cracked instantly. Veronica pushed herself off the frayed sofa, her red, sweat-streaked eyes widening as she staggered toward the entryway to see who was at the door. For a fraction of a second, absolute shock washed over her face—Vanessa looked so striking, so commanding, so entirely out of reach that it felt like looking at a high-society stranger rather

They practically tumbled back through the threshold of Apartment 301, slamming the heavy iron door shut behind them and sealing themselves right back into the suffocating, heat trap. Inside, the silence was absolute—heavy, foul, and thick with the rancid stench of decaying food in the sink and the suffocating heat baking off the plaster walls. Overhead, the dead ceiling fan hung uselessly like a dark spider, completely still. Susan dropped directly to her knees on the sticky floor tiles, pulling six-year-old Leo into her chest as she broke down into harsh, ragged sobs. The boy’s skin was burning hot, his small shirt soaked through with sweat as he whimpered continuously against her shoulder. "We are trapped!" Susan cried out, her voice raw and breaking. "We can't even step outside to buy water without those vultures putting cameras in our faces! Look at us! Look at what we've become!" Veronica staggered toward the frayed couch, collapsing onto the damp cushions with a heavy, whee

The heavy glass doors of the Axerold Estate main house slid shut with a soft hiss, instantly cutting off the suffocating 40°C heat and the noise of the power tools outside. The cool air conditioning hit Vanessa immediately, fresh and smelling of clean floor polish and wood. Matt walked right behind her, carrying the big market tote into the kitchen and dropping it onto the marble counter with a heavy breath. "Thanks again, Matt," Vanessa said, turning around and taking a small towel to wipe the sweat from her neck. "I know carrying market bags isn't part of your job." Matt laughed, wiping his brow with his sleeve. "Call it site prep, Miss Axerold. Carrying that much meat and peppers in this sun is no joke." Vanessa let out a laugh, shaking her head as she pulled a fresh navy apron out of her bag. "Site prep? You're turning my market run into construction work now?" "Hey, it counts," Matt said with a grin. "Every project needs good site prep. If my crew collapses from hunge

The echo of the slammed front door lingered in the sweltering silence of Apartment 301, leaving the room heavy with the sour stench of decaying food and unwashed linoleum. Andrea stood motionless near the broken hallway mirror, his face drained of every drop of color. His open dress shirt hung loosely off his shoulders, damp with cold sweat. For the first time, the blind arrogance in his eyes faltered, replaced by a hollow, vacant stare as he looked at the silk-wrapped bakery box Clara had left resting on the grimy cabinet. Veronica was the first to snap the silence. "That ungrateful witch!" Veronica shrieked, her voice cracking into a ragged, high-pitched scream. She slammed both fists onto the sticky dining table, sending a cloud of stale dust into the stagnant air. "How dare she! How dare she drag David and Clara into our private business! She paid them to say those things! She hired actors to come to our home and insult my son!" Susan slowly pushed herself off the sofa,
