Chapter 1

"Elena, let Mia walk down the aisle first at your wedding."

I stared at my mother, sure I'd heard wrong. "What did you say?"

"Don't get upset." My father sat beside me, his voice earnest. "Mia says her biggest dream is to walk down the aisle in a wedding dress. Let her have this."

I shook with anger. "No! It's my wedding! You want her to walk down the aisle in my place? What do you take me for?"

My father's face darkened. "Elena! It's just a formality. Stop being so selfish."

My mother frowned. "Mia's father died saving us! It's just one little wish. Be the bigger person and stop throwing a tantrum."

I looked at my fiancé, Julian, but he avoided my eyes.

"Elena, be reasonable. You already have so much. Mia just wants to feel included."

Here we go again.

All they had to do was tell me to be understanding and grateful, and I was supposed to hand everything over.

Before Mia came, I'd been the apple of their eye too.

My father used to carry me on his shoulders to watch the fireworks, and my mother used to warm milk for me late at night and tuck me in.

But ten years ago, Mia's father died saving my parents during an avalanche, and everything changed.

Her mother had remarried long before. With her father gone, Mia had no one to care for her.

From then on, our family lived under the weight of that debt.

And I was the one expected to pay it.

My parents brought Mia home to raise her. On her very first day, she pointed at my room and said she liked the tree outside the window.

So I was forced to give it up and move into a cramped storage room. I slept there for ten years.

My mother casually passed the necklace my grandfather had given me on to her. Designs I'd stayed up all night drawing went out under Mia's name. Even the roses Julian gave me ended up in her vase, just because she said they were pretty.

Once, Mia and I were in a car accident together. I broke my right leg; she only scraped her left arm. But when the only ambulance arrived, my parents rushed Mia into it without a second thought and shouted at me.

"Mia's father died to save us. We can't let anything happen to her!"

I was left waiting in the pouring rain for three hours before help finally came.

When I woke up, the first thing I heard was my parents comforting Mia. "It's not your fault. Elena's tough. She can handle it. But you had a scare. You need to rest."

What a joke. Because I was strong and obedient, my pain somehow didn't count.

Whenever they hurt me, they promised to make it up to me someday. But someday never came. They just kept letting me down.

This time, I didn't want to wait anymore...

"Elena? Are you listening?" Julian's voice pulled me back. "Mia just wants to know what it feels like. You'll still be the bride."

As Julian spoke, I thought of everything I'd endured over those ten years. Suddenly, the weight I'd carried for so long lifted.

That old, scabbed-over wound in my heart had finally gone numb.

Ten years. I'd paid off this so-called debt in full. I didn't want this family or this wedding anymore...

I looked at them, managed a calm smile, and said, "Sure. If you all think it's fair, let her have the wedding."

My parents looked stunned for a moment. Then they smiled.

"I knew it. Elena is always so understanding."

My mother reached out to stroke my hair. I turned away and walked to my room.

I locked the door and opened my encrypted laptop. The Department of Defense's top-secret research assignment was waiting on the screen.

If I joined, I'd have to cut off all contact with the outside world and live and work at a secure research base for five years.

I gripped the mouse, typed my name into the signature field, and clicked Confirm.

A countdown popped up in cold red letters.

"Elena!" Julian threw himself toward me, clutching the worn hair clip. The guards pinned him down, scraping his knees raw. He still crawled toward me. "Elena, I'm begging you. Just look at me...""My name is Sophia. Get it right," I said coldly.Julian shook and raised the hair clip over his head. "No, Elena, I was wrong! I know I destroyed our seven years together. I was blind, and I lost you!"Please give me a chance to make it right. I'll give you everything I own! Don't give up on me completely... Please!"He slammed his forehead against the ground again and again. Each thud was enough to make anyone flinch.I was about to fire back when someone stepped in front of me.Nina, my closest friend at the base, strode down the steps, jabbed a finger in Julian's face, and tore into him."You dare bring up those seven years? Where were you on her birthday? With another woman! You left Sophia waiting at that restaurant for four hours!"She shook with rage. "You put another woman's name on h

Security outside the National Hall was tight. Armed officers had set up a cordon and let no one through. My parents and Julian stood outside in the pouring rain, soaked to the skin, sobbing and crying out my name."Elena, it's Mom. Please, just come out and let us see you!"The guards blocked them, expressionless. "We told you, there's no one named Elena here. Are you deaf? Get out of here, or we'll open fire!"During the scuffle, the doors opened. I came out, flanked by more than a dozen officers and guards."Elena!" My mother recognized me at once and burst into loud sobs. "Sweetheart! Look at me! I'm here to take you home!"My father pushed forward. "Elena, I was wrong! Forgive me and come home with us!"The guard beside me moved to stop them, but I shook my head and looked down at them, my voice flat. "Home to what? The dark, damp storage room where I lived for ten years? Or that table full of seafood and nuts, where you tried to make me eat food you knew I was allergic to?"The th

"Shut up! You bitch!" Julian's eyes were bloodshot as he lunged and grabbed Mia by the throat. The brutal truth in her words left Julian and my parents in agony. She was right. Mia had only asked. The real wounds had come from them, every single time they indulged her and took her side!My mother slapped herself hard, again and again, wailing, "She's right. What kind of mother am I?! I'm worse than an animal! I was the one who drove Elena away!"My father sank to the floor, tearing at his white hair with shaking hands. "Elena... I deserve to die! If you come back, I'll give you my life!"Julian grabbed his car keys and bolted for the door. "Keep looking! I'll turn the world upside down if I have to. However long it takes, I'm bringing Elena back!"They threw Mia out for good and took back the car and house they'd given her. After ten years of being treated like a princess, Mia had no skills to support herself. She couldn't even find an ordinary job.To keep up her old lifestyle, she wa

Time flew by. Because my research was classified, the government kept me under tight protection.Julian and my parents called in every favor and searched the world for me, but they found nothing.Meanwhile, Mia realized they were paying less and less attention to her.My parents and Julian no longer spoiled her. They'd even begun to resent her because I was gone.No matter how she sulked or cried, all she got were cold, dismissive looks.Their every thought was consumed by the search for me. Then one night, they came home late and heard Mia's furious voice through her half-open door upstairs."Now that Elena's gone, those two old fossils barely pay attention to me. If they find out I'm not even the daughter of the man who saved them, I'm finished!"Get rid of them so I can take their money. If you don't, you won't see a cent!"The three of them froze outside her room. My father kicked the door open, startling Mia.Her face went white. "Wh-when did you get back...""Mia, what did you me

I had no idea my parents and Julian were frantically searching for me. My whole world was the data in front of me."The magnetic confinement model for the third fusion track is down to a 0.003% error rate!"Professor Hawke's voice rose with excitement as he watched the figures change on the screen. "Elena, you solved in five months what we couldn't crack in two years. You're a genius!"Dozens of leading scientists in the hall applauded. They looked at me with open admiration. Here, people recognized my work, and my research was protected by patents. No one put Mia's name on it the way Julian had.Once, Professor Hawke and I worked on a project together. I assumed my name wouldn't even be on it, but he listed me as the sole author."Elena, you did the work," he told me. "I only gave you a couple of pointers. You deserve the credit."In that moment, I felt a pang. I remembered finding Mia's name on my work, and how Julian had pulled me aside when I confronted him."Mia wants to use this

On the wedding day, Mia went through the entire ceremony in the wedding dress, then put on an innocent act. "Julian, the ceremony's over. I want to give the wedding back to Elena. Why isn't she here yet?"Julian praised her for being thoughtful. Then he called me. I didn't answer. He sent a few texts. No reply. Irritated, he said, "Elena's acting out again. Does she think we won't get mad? If she doesn't show up soon, I'll marry someone else!"My mother frowned. "I barely mentioned the house, and she snapped at me and told me to get out. It's not like she even uses it. What's wrong with giving it to Mia? She's being unreasonable."Mia's eyes reddened. "Don't talk about Elena like that. It's her wedding. Of course she's upset. I've already gotten more than enough. I'll move out tomorrow and give you all back to her.""You don't have to," my father said, his face grim. "Mia, Elena used to be such a sweet, understanding girl. Don't worry. She'll show up."Julian nodded. "Let's check the d
