"Isabella, why are you always such a klutz? As my fiancée, the future Mrs. Pierce, you need to be graceful and composed, not stumbling around and making messes like a child."

James complained in English, sounding so disappointed that anyone would have thought I had ruined the entire engagement party instead of dropping a note card.

"Sweetheart, you're being way too hard on her. She's just an uncultured girl raised by an ailing mother. Graceful and composed? Ha! You might as well ask a donkey to fly!"

Rachel mocked me in Italian first, then turned around and sharply scolded James in English, her face full of concern.

"James, how can you talk to Isabella like that? She's your fiancée!"

"Relax, honey, you've been doing great... Are you just nervous? Have a glass of champagne. Trust me, you'll feel so much better."

"I don't want a drink." I refused on the spot.

Their cheap, two-faced act made me sick. My stomach was churning so hard I couldn't have swallowed a thing.

But Rachel ignored my refusal completely and walked straight to the champagne tower.

She gracefully lifted a glass of champagne while her other hand, hidden by the sweep of her skirt, gave the tablecloth a vicious yank.

"Ah!" Rachel let out an absurdly theatrical scream. The entire champagne tower came crashing down, spraying golden wine and shattered glass everywhere.

My mother was seated right beside it. Champagne soaked her from head to toe, and she froze in place, helpless, her face going white in an instant.

Three years earlier, my mother had undergone heart surgery. She had never fully recovered, and she was easily startled.

I scrambled up to go check on her, but James moved faster.

He charged toward Rachel without a second thought, his elbow slamming into my shoulder. I went down hard, and my palm landed on a shard of glass. Blood gushed out instantly.

James didn't even notice. All he could see was Rachel and the cut on her calf.

By the time I struggled to my feet, James was already carrying Rachel toward the door, his face frantic with worry.

"James, our engagement ceremony isn't over."

I said it slowly, warm blood dripping steadily from my fingertips onto the carpet.

"That's right, James. I'm fine, really. Your engagement to Isabella matters more."

Rachel's words were pretty enough, but the malice blazing in her eyes was sharper than the glass glittering on the floor. Her arms wound tightly around James's neck, and she kept deliberately pressing her full chest against him.

"Can't you see Rachel is hurt? I'm taking her to the hospital! This party is just a formality. It doesn't matter at all."

James snapped it out impatiently, then strode off without a backward glance.

Every guest at the party saw it. My fiancé walked out carrying my best friend before we had even finished our speeches.

The looks they gave me held sympathy, pity, and plenty of mockery and scorn.

I took a deep breath, forced my tangled emotions back under control, and hurried over to check on my mother.

She really wasn't doing well. Her face was gray and her breathing was fast. She was badly shaken.

I drove her to the hospital right away.

"Isabella, my poor girl. Whatever you decide, even if you break up with James, Mom will stand behind you."

On the drive over, she kept watching me with worried eyes. During the intake exam, she finally said what she'd been holding back.

I took her hand gently and told her not to worry. "I'll handle everything."

Break up? Of course I would break up with James. Just not yet. That would be letting him and Rachel off far too easy.

My father had taught me from the time I was small never to go soft on a traitor. I would make them pay the full price for betraying me!

But the James before her was no longer the dashing young hotshot she remembered. He was skin and bones, shrunken and wretched, his hair and beard tangled from at least six months without a trim.Even in the dead of winter, he gave off an unbearable stench."Life doesn't seem to be treating you well."Rachel sneered down at him. Being able to humiliate James to his face lifted her spirits considerably."You look like... you're doing all right."James tried to straighten his spine, which only made him look more pitiful."Of course! As a matter of fact, I just got back from a trip to Italy."Rachel said it in Italian on purpose. She tipped her chin up and looked down her nose at James as his face went pale."I saw Isabella at a charity gala just yesterday... James, you really should see her now. She looks like a true princess.""Honestly, I feel sorry for you. You had the chance to marry her once, didn't you? Such a shame. You wrecked it all yourself.""Shut up! Shut your mouth! I didn't

On Christmas Eve, the Messina Family, the second-largest mafia family in Italy, threw a charity gala, and my father sent me in his place. "It's time they met the little princess I'm so proud of.""Principessa of the Lucchese Family, we are honored by your presence."Don Antonio Messina himself welcomed me.It wasn't until he started eagerly introducing his three sons, none of them engaged yet, that I finally understood my father's real agenda.Just as I was about to invent an excuse and slip away, I was stunned to see the woman on the arm of his eldest son, Kevin Messina. It was Rachel! Her dress was daringly revealing, her makeup loud, and half the room kept sneaking glances at her."Long time no see, Isabella!" Rachel wasn't the least bit surprised to see me and greeted me with a breezy little wave.Don Messina's face darkened instantly. I smiled. "It's quite all right, Don Messina. Rachel and I used to be best friends."Just then, the Messina Family's consigliere hurried over and mu

James fought to steady himself, but his voice kept shaking anyway. His Italian clearly wasn't up to the task. He stumbled and stalled. My father's face darkened, making James even more nervous."...the system launders money through international networks and... and cryptocurrency. By a conservative estimate, it's more than ten times faster than traditional underground banking, and it eliminates the risks created by middlemen entirely.""I've been working with the Ferrandi Family for over a year now. To date, not a single slip.""It does sound impressive. But I have one small question. I noticed that with your system, every transfer over $250,000 loses 0.5 percent. I'd like to know why."James's expression went taut. He rubbed the tip of his nose, unable to hide his guilt. "That's... that's normal transaction loss.""Is it? I don't think so. I think you stole that money and used it to pay for Rachel's designer jewelry and couture gowns, as well as those watches and sports cars you love

"F-Father?"My words hit James like a lightning strike. The man who could talk his way out of anything was suddenly stammering."Isabella, you're saying the... the Don of the Lucchese Family... is your father?""Yes," I said calmly in Italian."You... you can actually speak Italian? Since when? Why... why did you never tell me!""I never said I couldn't. Did I?"I let my gaze slide away from James and rest gently on Rachel.Rachel flinched hard, her eyes darting away in panic. Every drop of color had drained from her face, and not even her flawless makeup could hide the terror written all over it.Beside her, James swallowed hard and started loudly blurting out excuses."Isabella, listen... listen to me. It was Rachel. Rachel seduced me! Back in Milan, I... I had too much to drink one night, and then... I never loved her. You're the only one I love!""I wanted to tell you everything, I swear. Isabella, you have to believe me! But Rachel threatened me. She said if I didn't keep seeing h

Two days earlier, Uncle Pete had sent me the file on Rachel's father. His name was Marco Bellini, and he was nothing more than a low-ranking made man in the Lucchese Family. Yet Rachel had spent years claiming he was the Family's consigliere and profiting from the lie.Uncle Pete put men on Marco immediately, and found he had leaked the Don's American itinerary to Rachel well in advance. Rachel had used it to squeeze in a meeting between James and the Don."My father pulled strings to get you a full five minutes with him. James, don't disappoint me."Rachel sat perched on James's desk, preening as if she deserved a medal.I watched all of it through a hidden camera in James's office, planted by a cleaning lady I had paid off."Of course, sweetheart. I don't even need five minutes. One minute is all it takes.""I've built the Don a flawless money-laundering pipeline. It runs through an international network. One tap of a finger can move ten-billion-dollar sums, far better than anything

I suddenly remembered a family photo Rachel had once posted on social media. At a red light, I pulled it up."Uncle Pete, could you find out who the man in this photo is?"I sent him the message along with the photo.I was genuinely curious who would have the nerve to impersonate the Lucchese Family's consigliere. After all, impersonating a consigliere violated the Mafia's Ten Commandments. The penalty was execution on the spot."So do you actually love me, or do you love the consigliere's daughter?"Rachel went on flirting with James in Italian."You, obviously, sweetheart. I want to pin you down on this seat right now and show you exactly how much I love you.""With your fiancée sitting right there? I have to say, I like the sound of that."Rachel licked her lips at James as she said it."What are you two talking about?" I couldn't stand another second of their nauseating little exchange, and I kept my voice as steady as I could."Nothing much. Just school stuff, and... work stuff."
