Chapter 2

Author: Jasmine Flower
The ballroom fell silent.

Mia covered her mouth as tears slid down her cheeks. “I’m sorry, Adrian. I never wanted to embarrass you, but everyone has been killing themselves for this financing round. I can’t watch the people who did the work get erased.”

I kept my eyes on Adrian.

“Who contacted the six strategic partners?”

His jaw tightened. “You did.”

“Who negotiated with Whitmore Capital?”

“You did.”

“Who resolved their demand for additional collateral?”

After a pause, he answered, “You.”

The murmuring stopped. Several department heads avoided my eyes. They knew his answers were true, but no one wanted to contradict the CEO.

Mia quickly gripped Adrian’s arm.

“But the project team closed the transaction, right?”

Adrian looked at her and seemed to recover.

“Right. Elena introduced the resources. Mia and the team executed. Knowing the right people isn’t the same as completing an eighty-million-dollar financing round.”

“Introduced the resources?”

I had flown to New York twelve times to win over Whitmore Capital, boarded the Harbor Crown yacht after midnight to keep them from leaving the deal, and used Bellini Holdings’ credit to cover the collateral shortfall.

Adrian knew every detail.

In the company’s early days, he had waited in rental cars outside private clubs while I convinced investors to give him fifteen minutes. When I secured the seed money that saved our first payroll, he kissed me in our unheated office and promised that one day everyone would know I was the reason he had made it out of that room.

Back then, he had called it loyalty.

Now, beneath the ballroom chandeliers, he said, “A company needs people who can finish the work, not a socialite who occasionally brings home a phone number.”

His words hurt because he knew the truth and had chosen to bury it.

Emboldened, Mia signaled her assistant to reopen the contribution report.

“Then we should settle this now. The top credit goes to me. Elena leaves the financing project, and I take over strategic partnerships and all six accounts.”

Her gaze shifted toward my office.

“I’ll also need the lake-view office if I’m expected to host investors.”

She didn’t only want the credit. She wanted my title, my clients, my office—and my place beside Adrian.

“You don’t even have the personal numbers for four of the partner executives,” I said.

Mia stepped closer to Adrian and straightened his tie.

“Once the contracts are signed, personal numbers won’t matter. Business relationships belong to the company, not to one woman.”

“Then call Harbor Crown. Ask them to confirm tomorrow’s implementation meeting.”

Her hand paused.

“I don’t need to perform on command.”

“You demanded that I perform for the entire company. One phone call shouldn’t be difficult.”

Adrian stepped in before she had to answer.

“This isn’t about playing games with clients, Elena.”

He didn’t move away from her hand.

I looked at his tie. I had chosen it for him in Milan. It suddenly looked cheap.

“Do you agree with her?” I asked. “Do you honestly believe this company has nothing to do with me?”

“I recognize that you’ve helped us, but Cross Meridian can’t depend on your personal connections forever. It’s time for you to step back and let a real team take over.”

I nodded.

“Fine.”

I didn’t argue again. I took out my phone and messaged the family attorney.

[Withdraw every personal guarantee and all Bellini credit support attached to this financing round. Make it effective before formal closing.]

His reply arrived less than a minute later.

[Confirmed. All notices will be completed within thirty minutes.]

Formal closing was one hour away.

Three months later, the investigation results became public.Mia was charged with commercial fraud, document forgery, misappropriation of company funds, and malicious disclosure of private information. Northstar Advisory's accounts were frozen, and her father became a subject of the same investigation. The board permanently removed Adrian as CEO.His Gold Coast condo and two investment accounts were frozen pending recovery of the related-party proceeds. The surveillance photographs and reputation-management contract also became the basis of my civil suit against him.Cross Meridian survived.I had never intended to punish more than seventy employees for two people's betrayal. After completing supplemental due diligence, Whitmore Capital restored the financing. All six strategic partners signed revised agreements. The new documents included independent-governance provisions that prevented any executive from bypassing financial review for related-party transactions. The closing wasn't ce

"This is all your fault!"Mia seized a pair of steel ice tongs from the bar and came at me.She didn't make it two steps. One of my father's guards caught her wrist and pinned her against the table before the tongs could touch me."Let go of me!" she screamed. "Elena destroyed my career. She has a family name, money, and power. Of course she gets to stand there and judge everyone else."I stopped in front of her. "Your career ended when you forged signatures and stole company money, not when you found out my last name was Moretti.""You have everything. I crawled out of an apartment where the heat barely worked. I couldn't afford to lose.""Wanting to win isn't wrong."I glanced at the altered financial model on the screen. "But you don't get to call theft ambition and lies fairness. You don't get to step on someone, then demand that she keep carrying your risk."One of the department heads who had laughed the loudest approached me with his hands open. "Ms. Bellini, Ms. Moretti, we wer

Adrian broke free of security and rushed toward the projection controls. "Those messages are fake. She manufactured them."Mia clutched her phone behind her back. "Why are you panicking? I saved the voice notes too."She pressed play.Adrian's voice rolled through the ballroom speakers."Once Elena is gone, all six partners will have to come through me. She handles a little socializing and thinks that makes her irreplaceable."There was a faint clink of glass on the recording, then his voice continued."After closing, I'm the CEO and you're the project lead. No one will ask what Elena did."The recording ended.Adrian stood beneath the screen as though his own voice had nailed him to the floor. It took him several seconds to look at me."I was telling Mia what she wanted to hear. I didn't mean any of it."I lifted my wrist, where the guards' fingers had already left dark bruises. "You only gave her the photographs, paid a firm to follow me, let her publish my address, and watched her f

Mia stared at the screen. "Those are legitimate market-consulting fees."The head of the external audit team left the back row and took control of the presentation. "Northstar Advisory is registered to a suburban residence and has reported no full-time employees in two years. Its owner, Daniel Foster, is your father. Correct?"The blood drained from her face. "He has industry experience. I recommended a qualified vendor. That's not a crime.""A competitive analysis of this scope normally costs no more than forty thousand dollars. Northstar billed Cross Meridian two hundred seventy thousand. Its European investor background report copied six pages from public websites and cost another four hundred ten thousand."The next invoice claimed Northstar had interviewed thirty-two institutional investors. The audit team had contacted every name on the list. Nineteen denied speaking to anyone from Northstar, eight addresses didn't exist, and five names belonged to people who had retired years ea

"We can renegotiate," Adrian said as he hurried toward me, keeping his voice low enough to sound intimate. "Everyone's angry, and things got out of hand. Let the deal close tonight. When we get home, I'll support whatever action you want to take against Mia."I stepped away before he could touch me. "Thirty minutes ago, you made sure there was no home for us to go back to.""Elena, I didn't know you were a Moretti.""You've already said that.""If I'd known, I never would've let it go this far.""So the problem isn't that you helped her smear me, tried to strip my voting rights, and ended our engagement. The problem is that you didn't know I was important enough to fear."His mouth opened, but no answer came out.Mia wasn't ready to surrender. "Whitmore isn't the only investment firm in the market. The data and partnership contracts belong to Cross Meridian. We can replace the money."The Whitmore representative turned to her. "Four of those documents are nonbinding letters of intent.

Lorenzo Russo, the Moretti family's general counsel, entered first."Take your hands off my daughter."The security guards released me as if I'd burned them. Mia stumbled back, her eyes darting from my father to the six partner representatives who were now standing. The chairman of Harbor Crown Shipping approached first. "Mr. Moretti."One by one, the other executives greeted him as well. The employees who had been laughing with Mia minutes ago went dead silent. No one in Chicago's shipping or hospitality world mistook Vittorio Moretti for a retired hotel owner. His companies held legitimate contracts, paid taxes, and appeared in financial papers. The power surrounding him lived in the details people were careful not to print: which unions took his calls, which ports never delayed his cargo, and how quickly a room changed when he entered it.He hadn't come with a gun or a shouted threat. He didn't need either one."Your daughter?" Mia forced out a brittle laugh. "There must be some mis
