Chapter 3

Author: Jasmine Flower
I had barely turned toward the exit when Mia glanced at Adrian.

He gave a slight nod.

Two security guards stepped in front of me.

“You’re not leaving yet.”

Mia placed a document on the table. The heading read Project Withdrawal and Continuing Cooperation Agreement.

Two pages were enough to make me laugh.

The agreement required me to admit that I had stolen Mia’s credit, resign as Director of Business Development, transfer my voting proxy to Adrian, and continue managing the company’s investors and strategic partners for three years.

I also had to keep my personal guarantees in place and remain silent about how the relationships had been secured.

In exchange, Cross Meridian would refrain from suing me for “reputational damage.”

They wanted my silence, my contacts, and my financial backing after taking away my title.

Adrian’s electronic signature was already at the bottom.

He hadn’t made a bad decision under pressure. He had approved this agreement before Mia ever walked onto the stage.

I tapped the paper.

“You refuse to acknowledge my contribution, but you still expect me to manage your clients and guarantee your debt?”

Mia folded her arms. “It’s the least you can do after the chaos you’ve caused.”

“If you had been content to support Adrian as his fiancée instead of demanding credit, none of this would be happening.”

I closed the agreement.

“I’m not signing it.”

“I knew you wouldn’t cooperate.”

Mia nodded to the technician.

A grainy photograph appeared on the screen. It showed me entering a penthouse suite at the Blackstone Hotel at eleven that night. An older man held the door for me, his body close to mine.

The photograph had been cropped to remove our general counsel, the financial advisers, and the project team already waiting inside.

We had negotiated for seven hours before Whitmore Capital accepted the investment framework.

Our general counsel had been inside that suite with me. Now he stood near the stage and said nothing.

The complete photograph existed in Adrian’s private cloud account. I had never sent it to anyone else.

Mia let her voice turn suggestive.

“So this is what Elena calls business development. No wonder older investors are always eager to meet with her.”

Laughter moved through the ballroom.

“What exactly are you implying?” I asked.

Her eyes widened innocently. “I didn’t imply anything. I can’t control what people conclude from the photograph.”

I looked at Adrian.

“You know what happened in that suite.”

He refused to look at the screen.

“Sign the agreement, and the photograph won’t go any further.”

That was when I understood.

Mia hadn’t stolen it.

Adrian had given it to her.

“You’re letting her smear your fiancée as a whore so you can take my position and voting rights?”

“The press will be here any minute, and closing begins in less than an hour,” he said. “I can’t let investors believe this deal depends on my girlfriend.”

“So you need them to believe it belongs entirely to you.”

“I’m protecting the company.”

Mia cut in.

“A CEO and his fiancée controlling the same financing deal creates an obvious governance problem. The cleanest solution is for Elena to leave the project—and the relationship.”

Adrian’s gaze dropped to the black diamond on my finger.

“We should put the engagement on hold.”

I removed the ring and placed it on the table.

“On hold? Or have you used up everything I can give you?”

“We’ll talk when you’ve calmed down.”

I almost smiled.

For five years, I had never used the Moretti name to control him. When my father offered to buy Cross Meridian, I refused because I wanted to protect Adrian’s pride.

All I had really protected was his insecurity.

My phone lit up.

[Principessa, the withdrawal notices have been delivered. Mr. Moretti is on his way.]

I locked the screen and pushed the ring toward Adrian.

“You don’t have to wait for me to calm down. The engagement is over.”

"This is all your fault!"Mia seized a pair of steel ice tongs from the bar and came at me.She didn't make it two steps. One of my father's guards caught her wrist and pinned her against the table before the tongs could touch me."Let go of me!" she screamed. "Elena destroyed my career. She has a family name, money, and power. Of course she gets to stand there and judge everyone else."I stopped in front of her. "Your career ended when you forged signatures and stole company money, not when you found out my last name was Moretti.""You have everything. I crawled out of an apartment where the heat barely worked. I couldn't afford to lose.""Wanting to win isn't wrong."I glanced at the altered financial model on the screen. "But you don't get to call theft ambition and lies fairness. You don't get to step on someone, then demand that she keep carrying your risk."One of the department heads who had laughed the loudest approached me with his hands open. "Ms. Bellini, Ms. Moretti, we wer

Adrian broke free of security and rushed toward the projection controls. "Those messages are fake. She manufactured them."Mia clutched her phone behind her back. "Why are you panicking? I saved the voice notes too."She pressed play.Adrian's voice rolled through the ballroom speakers."Once Elena is gone, all six partners will have to come through me. She handles a little socializing and thinks that makes her irreplaceable."There was a faint clink of glass on the recording, then his voice continued."After closing, I'm the CEO and you're the project lead. No one will ask what Elena did."The recording ended.Adrian stood beneath the screen as though his own voice had nailed him to the floor. It took him several seconds to look at me."I was telling Mia what she wanted to hear. I didn't mean any of it."I lifted my wrist, where the guards' fingers had already left dark bruises. "You only gave her the photographs, paid a firm to follow me, let her publish my address, and watched her f

Mia stared at the screen. "Those are legitimate market-consulting fees."The head of the external audit team left the back row and took control of the presentation. "Northstar Advisory is registered to a suburban residence and has reported no full-time employees in two years. Its owner, Daniel Foster, is your father. Correct?"The blood drained from her face. "He has industry experience. I recommended a qualified vendor. That's not a crime.""A competitive analysis of this scope normally costs no more than forty thousand dollars. Northstar billed Cross Meridian two hundred seventy thousand. Its European investor background report copied six pages from public websites and cost another four hundred ten thousand."The next invoice claimed Northstar had interviewed thirty-two institutional investors. The audit team had contacted every name on the list. Nineteen denied speaking to anyone from Northstar, eight addresses didn't exist, and five names belonged to people who had retired years ea

"We can renegotiate," Adrian said as he hurried toward me, keeping his voice low enough to sound intimate. "Everyone's angry, and things got out of hand. Let the deal close tonight. When we get home, I'll support whatever action you want to take against Mia."I stepped away before he could touch me. "Thirty minutes ago, you made sure there was no home for us to go back to.""Elena, I didn't know you were a Moretti.""You've already said that.""If I'd known, I never would've let it go this far.""So the problem isn't that you helped her smear me, tried to strip my voting rights, and ended our engagement. The problem is that you didn't know I was important enough to fear."His mouth opened, but no answer came out.Mia wasn't ready to surrender. "Whitmore isn't the only investment firm in the market. The data and partnership contracts belong to Cross Meridian. We can replace the money."The Whitmore representative turned to her. "Four of those documents are nonbinding letters of intent.

Lorenzo Russo, the Moretti family's general counsel, entered first."Take your hands off my daughter."The security guards released me as if I'd burned them. Mia stumbled back, her eyes darting from my father to the six partner representatives who were now standing. The chairman of Harbor Crown Shipping approached first. "Mr. Moretti."One by one, the other executives greeted him as well. The employees who had been laughing with Mia minutes ago went dead silent. No one in Chicago's shipping or hospitality world mistook Vittorio Moretti for a retired hotel owner. His companies held legitimate contracts, paid taxes, and appeared in financial papers. The power surrounding him lived in the details people were careful not to print: which unions took his calls, which ports never delayed his cargo, and how quickly a room changed when he entered it.He hadn't come with a gun or a shouted threat. He didn't need either one."Your daughter?" Mia forced out a brittle laugh. "There must be some mis
