Chapter 4

Author: Jasmine Flower
Less than an hour remained before formal closing.

Mia stopped pretending this was about fairness.

She projected my full name, private phone number, and home street onto the screen, then restarted her livestream.

“If Elena won’t apologize to the team, the public deserves to see how our Director of Business Development really operates.”

My phone began ringing almost immediately.

The first caller called me a whore. The second threatened to send the hotel photograph to every investor. The third claimed he was already outside my building.

Messages flooded the screen.

[How many investors did you sleep with?]

[Gold Coast isn’t far. Maybe someone should pay you a visit.]

Someone posted a photograph of my building entrance.

Mia watched the viewer count rise.

“Publishing my private information and encouraging harassment is a crime,” I said.

“I shared publicly available information about a corporate executive.” She smiled at the camera. “I can’t control how people react.”

The family attorney called.

Before I could answer, Mia snatched the phone from my hand and rejected the call. When it rang again, she slammed it against the marble bar.

The screen shattered and went black.

“Now you can’t ask one of your old men to fix this for you.”

I looked at the ruined phone.

“That line is connected to a private security network. Destroying it doesn’t silence the alert. It triggers one.”

Her smile faltered, but only for a second.

I turned to Adrian.

“You know I brought in Whitmore Capital and negotiated the strategic partnerships.”

“I know.”

“You know the story she’s telling with that hotel photograph is a lie.”

He hesitated.

“I know.”

The ballroom went silent.

“But this company can’t move forward while everyone believes you’re the one who made me successful,” Adrian continued.

That was the truth behind all of it.

He had wanted me beside him while I carried the risk. The credit and power were supposed to belong to him.

Mia pushed an electronic signature pad toward me. The withdrawal agreement had already been loaded onto the screen.

“Sign it, and I’ll end the livestream and remove your information.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Then we’ll help you.”

The guards looked at Adrian.

He nodded.

They seized my arms and forced me against the table.

“Once you sign, this will be over,” Adrian said.

“Tell them to let me go.”

His gaze flicked toward the reporters gathering outside the glass doors.

“Don’t make this uglier than it already is.”

“I’m not the one holding someone down.”

“Then stop fighting and sign.”

Years ago, in our first unheated office, Adrian had promised that no one would ever force me to bow my head while he was there.

Now he watched his guards pin me down.

Mia grabbed my right hand and forced my thumb toward the screen.

Before she could press it against the signature pad, the ballroom doors crashed open.

A team of men in black suits swept into the room and moved straight toward the table.

Behind them, a man with silver at his temples stood in the doorway.

His gaze settled on the hands gripping my wrists.

“Take your hands off my daughter.”

"This is all your fault!"Mia seized a pair of steel ice tongs from the bar and came at me.She didn't make it two steps. One of my father's guards caught her wrist and pinned her against the table before the tongs could touch me."Let go of me!" she screamed. "Elena destroyed my career. She has a family name, money, and power. Of course she gets to stand there and judge everyone else."I stopped in front of her. "Your career ended when you forged signatures and stole company money, not when you found out my last name was Moretti.""You have everything. I crawled out of an apartment where the heat barely worked. I couldn't afford to lose.""Wanting to win isn't wrong."I glanced at the altered financial model on the screen. "But you don't get to call theft ambition and lies fairness. You don't get to step on someone, then demand that she keep carrying your risk."One of the department heads who had laughed the loudest approached me with his hands open. "Ms. Bellini, Ms. Moretti, we wer

Adrian broke free of security and rushed toward the projection controls. "Those messages are fake. She manufactured them."Mia clutched her phone behind her back. "Why are you panicking? I saved the voice notes too."She pressed play.Adrian's voice rolled through the ballroom speakers."Once Elena is gone, all six partners will have to come through me. She handles a little socializing and thinks that makes her irreplaceable."There was a faint clink of glass on the recording, then his voice continued."After closing, I'm the CEO and you're the project lead. No one will ask what Elena did."The recording ended.Adrian stood beneath the screen as though his own voice had nailed him to the floor. It took him several seconds to look at me."I was telling Mia what she wanted to hear. I didn't mean any of it."I lifted my wrist, where the guards' fingers had already left dark bruises. "You only gave her the photographs, paid a firm to follow me, let her publish my address, and watched her f

Mia stared at the screen. "Those are legitimate market-consulting fees."The head of the external audit team left the back row and took control of the presentation. "Northstar Advisory is registered to a suburban residence and has reported no full-time employees in two years. Its owner, Daniel Foster, is your father. Correct?"The blood drained from her face. "He has industry experience. I recommended a qualified vendor. That's not a crime.""A competitive analysis of this scope normally costs no more than forty thousand dollars. Northstar billed Cross Meridian two hundred seventy thousand. Its European investor background report copied six pages from public websites and cost another four hundred ten thousand."The next invoice claimed Northstar had interviewed thirty-two institutional investors. The audit team had contacted every name on the list. Nineteen denied speaking to anyone from Northstar, eight addresses didn't exist, and five names belonged to people who had retired years ea

"We can renegotiate," Adrian said as he hurried toward me, keeping his voice low enough to sound intimate. "Everyone's angry, and things got out of hand. Let the deal close tonight. When we get home, I'll support whatever action you want to take against Mia."I stepped away before he could touch me. "Thirty minutes ago, you made sure there was no home for us to go back to.""Elena, I didn't know you were a Moretti.""You've already said that.""If I'd known, I never would've let it go this far.""So the problem isn't that you helped her smear me, tried to strip my voting rights, and ended our engagement. The problem is that you didn't know I was important enough to fear."His mouth opened, but no answer came out.Mia wasn't ready to surrender. "Whitmore isn't the only investment firm in the market. The data and partnership contracts belong to Cross Meridian. We can replace the money."The Whitmore representative turned to her. "Four of those documents are nonbinding letters of intent.

Lorenzo Russo, the Moretti family's general counsel, entered first."Take your hands off my daughter."The security guards released me as if I'd burned them. Mia stumbled back, her eyes darting from my father to the six partner representatives who were now standing. The chairman of Harbor Crown Shipping approached first. "Mr. Moretti."One by one, the other executives greeted him as well. The employees who had been laughing with Mia minutes ago went dead silent. No one in Chicago's shipping or hospitality world mistook Vittorio Moretti for a retired hotel owner. His companies held legitimate contracts, paid taxes, and appeared in financial papers. The power surrounding him lived in the details people were careful not to print: which unions took his calls, which ports never delayed his cargo, and how quickly a room changed when he entered it.He hadn't come with a gun or a shouted threat. He didn't need either one."Your daughter?" Mia forced out a brittle laugh. "There must be some mis
