Chapter 2

Author: Crystal K
I turned.

Maya stood in the doorway, but she wasn't the girl in the leather jacket anymore.

She’d changed into a black leather dress. Skin-tight. The V-neck plunged almost to her navel. The hem was dangerously high on her thighs.

This wasn't the Maya I knew.

"You… changed," I stammered.

"What? You don't like it?" She did a little spin, the leather skirt riding up even higher. "Thought I'd try a new look."

My eyes were glued to her.

Her body… I’d never noticed how sexy she was.

"It's… different."

"Catherine, for the last time, don't marry him."

Her words were like a splash of cold water.

"What?"

"Luciano Carbone is too dangerous." Maya walked toward me, her heels clicking sharply on the floor. "He’s killed people, Catherine. A lot of them."

"That's not news." I took a step back. "I know who he is. I know what his family does."

"You don't know shit," she hissed, her fingers digging into my arm like claws. "You watch movies and think you know the life? The reality is a thousand times uglier."

I shook her hand off. "We've had this conversation a million times. You fight with Luciano every time you see him."

Maya's face hardened.

She turned away, pissed at my reaction.

"May, wait." I went after her. "I didn't mean it like that. I'm sorry... I know you're just worried about me. And I worry about you, too."

I bit my lip, then asked the question that was eating at me. "Are you seeing someone?"

Her whole body went stiff.

"Why do you ask?"

"No reason, just… a woman's intuition." I tried to sound casual. "If you are, I just hope you're being careful. Stay safe."

Maya spun around to face me, her green eyes burning with fury.

"Stay safe?" she repeated, as if the word was poison.

"I mean… if he's into... rougher stuff. You have to be safe."

"Rougher stuff?" Her voice got colder. "Like what?"

My face flushed. "You know what I mean."

Maya suddenly laughed, but the sound sent a chill down my spine.

"Catherine Sterling, the little princess." She stalked toward me. "You think I need your advice? You think I don't know how to handle a man?"

"I didn't—"

"Yes, you did!" she exploded. "Always the fucking saint, aren't you? St. Catherine, looking down on me from your ivory tower. Am I your pet project? Your charity case?"

"May, I never—"

"You can't stand it when I have something you don't, can you? A little fun, a little danger." Her eyes flashed with a dangerous light.

"I'm just worried about you!"

"Worried?" Maya sneered. "Catherine, you don't know the first thing about living. Your world is all pink roses and diamond engagement rings. Real passion, real danger—you wouldn't dare touch it."

Her words cut like a knife.

"I'm leaving."

"May, please—"

"Don't call me May!" she yelled. "I'm sick of your fake sympathy!"

"Maya!" I ran after her. "Don't be like this!"

But she was already out the door.

I heard the elevator doors open, then close.

Then, the roar of an engine.

Her Harley.

I rushed to the window and saw Maya tear into the night on that black beast.

Where was she going?

I remembered her mentioning it once. When she was upset, she’d go to an underground street racing club. In the industrial district in Brooklyn.

That kind of place… it was dangerous.

Especially for a woman dressed like that.

I grabbed my keys and ran out of the apartment.

Maya was my best friend.

Even though we just fought, even though she said all those hurtful things.

She saved my life.

Now, it was my turn to pull her back from the fire.

I texted Luciano that Maya had disappeared and I was worried.

Then, I found the club. I pushed open the heavy steel door and was hit by a wave of heat. Sweat, booze, and something else.

I scanned the crowd, searching for her.

Then I saw it. Her Harley, parked in a corner.

But Maya wasn't on it.

I pushed through the bodies, looking for her.

The music was so loud I could barely hear my own heartbeat.

And then I saw them.

In a dark corner, two figures tangled together.

Maya was slammed against the bike, her dress hiked high up her thighs, a man's hands all over her.

They were kissing wildly. The man spoke between kisses, his voice a low growl. "How’d you ditch Catherine to come see me?"

Maya, breathing heavily, kissed him back and laughed. "I just had to throw a little fit. The good little princess is probably at home right now, wringing her hands, worried sick about me."

My world stopped. The air left my lungs. My nails dug into my palms.

My fiancé. My best friend. Tangled together like animals.

Maya's POVThe hospital corridor was cold. The white fluorescent lights hurt my eyes."Miss Cross. You can leave now."Marco stood in front of me, his face blank."How is Luciano?" I asked."That's no longer your concern," his voice was ice. "The boss said he never wants to see you again."Never wants to see me again.Hours ago, in that cathedral, he'd called me a sewer. A toy. Something to be used and discarded. Now he couldn't even be bothered to look at me."I can wait for him to wake up—""Miss Cross." Marco cut me off. Two bodyguards moved to his side. "Please leave immediately. Or we'll have to use force."I looked into their eyes. They were cold, unfamiliar. These were the same men who used to bow to me, because I was the boss's woman. Now they looked at me like I was garbage.I turned and left the hospital. It had started to rain. A cold, biting October rain.I didn't have an umbrella. The rain quickly soaked my hair, running down my face.Rain or tears, I couldn't tell the dif

Luciano's POVMaya’s words made my stomach turn.I shot to my feet, grabbed a fistful of her hair, and dragged her.She screamed in pain, but I didn't give a damn."You think I need you?" I slammed her head against a stone pillar. "What the fuck are you?"Blood started to trickle down her forehead, but my rage was far from over."Just two days ago, we—" she tried to argue."Two days ago?" I sneered, my hand closing around her throat, squeezing until her face started to turn purple. "You were a warm body. A hole to fuck. That's all you ever were.""You really think I could ever love you?" My voice was venom. "Maya Cross, you're not worth a single eyelash that falls from Catherine's face.""You… you said you loved me…" she choked out."Love you?" I let go, watching her collapse to the floor, coughing. "I never loved you. You're just an animal who spreads her legs, a bitch who knows how to bark. You do the filthy things Catherine would never do."Tears mixed with blood streamed down Maya'

My father's embrace was warm.As warm as it was when I had nightmares as a child.I sobbed my heart out.All the pain, all the betrayal, it all came pouring out."I'm not getting married," I cried. "I don't want any of it.""Okay," my father said, stroking my hair. "Whatever you want."He didn't ask why.He didn't blame me for being impulsive. He just held me tight."Take her home," he told the bodyguards. They helped me into the Rolls-Royce. My father sat beside me.The car pulled away from that nightmarish place. At home, my mother was waiting. When she saw the state I was in, she didn't ask a single question. She just hugged me and let me cry on her shoulder."Mom's here," she said softly. "Everything's going to be okay."Three hours later, the lawyer arrived with a stack of documents."All the gifts from Mr. Carbone have been cataloged," the lawyer reported. "Jewelry, properties, stocks. All ready to be returned.""Good," my father nodded. "Send them to the Carbone family immediate

A fiery pain exploded across my face. But it was nothing compared to the venom in Maya's eyes."Finally!" she shrieked. "Finally, I don't have to pretend anymore!"Her face was twisted into an ugly mask."Do you have any idea how much I hate you? Catherine Sterling, the perfect little princess!"Her voice echoed through the lobby. A few passersby stopped to stare."I hate your perfect family! I hate your clean background! I hate how you get everything without even trying!"I stood there, listening, as my heart bled."Luciano was supposed to be mine! The queen's throne was supposed to be mine!" Maya's voice grew shriller. "But then you floated in, St. Catherine, and you bewitched him with your wide-eyed innocence and your fucking kindness!""I never—""You did!" she cut me off. "You took everything from him! His love, his attention, his promises! And what was I? I was left to hide in the shadows, stealing scraps of what should have been mine!"I thought back to a night six years ago.Ma

"Catherine, please."Luciano's eyes were bloodshot, his vision blurred by tears."Don't go."He blocked the doorway, refusing to let me leave."I know I was wrong. I know I hurt you." His voice trembled. "But we can fix this. We can start over.""Start over?" A laugh escaped my lips, cold and empty. "And build on what foundation? More lies?""No, with the truth." He reached for me, but I flinched away. "I'll tell you everything. Maya, she—""Enough." I cut him off. "I don't want to hear another word about her.""Then what about us?" Luciano looked at me, desperate. "Catherine, think about our empire. Everything we built.""That was your empire, Luciano," I corrected. "Never mine.""No! It's ours!" he insisted, grabbing my arm. "I'm nothing without you. You made me better, stronger. You're my queen!"I thought about what happened a year ago.Sophia Castellano, the daughter of a rival family.Luciano had gotten too close to her during a deal. There were pictures. We were in a cold war fo
