登入~Alexei~I stared at her.For a moment, I allowed myself to hope. If that was the case, perhaps there was a way forward after all. Perhaps I could tell her the truth gradually, give her time to process it, while still leaving her the chance to do whatever she wanted to. The Tinsley I knew wouldn’t fall into the water herself. I tried to tell myself she was going back to the people she always ran from before the incident for some kind of revenge. Then I remembered the photograph on my phone.Jun-Kai laughing with her at a restaurant. His arm resting casually on the back of her chair. The smug expression on his face and the way she looked at him. My brief hope dissolved into irritation.“Speaking of things you should know,” I began, unable to keep the edge out of my voice, “how much time have you been spending with Jun-Kai lately?”Tinsley blinked. “Jun-Kai?”“Yes. Jun-Kai.”She looked confused by my tone. “I’ve seen him a few times. Why?”I leaned back in my chair, forcing myself to
~Alexei~I shoved my hands into my pockets.“We do but we couldn’t ride them because Jun-Kai and your stepsister stopped by and you didn’t want to see them.”She glanced at me, completely ignoring the mention of Jun-Kai or her sister. “Do you remember when exactly it was taken? I remember the final week quite clearly, but some of the other days before the incident are still a little blurry. It’s strange, isn’t it? Knowing that you’ve experienced something but not being able to remember every detail of it.”I sat in the armchair opposite her.“Yes. It is.”She looked at the photograph again, her expression turning thoughtful.“I’ve been trying to remember more things lately. The doctors said I shouldn’t pressure myself, and I’m trying not to, but sometimes I get frustrated. There are people who seem to know me so well, and they keep talking about things we’ve done together, but I can’t remember any of it. I don’t like feeling as though I’m missing parts of my own life.”My fingers cur
~Alexei~My fingers tightened around the phone as I opened the post. The picture appeared to have been taken at a restaurant the previous evening.Tinsley sat across from Jun-Kai, laughing at something he had said, while he leaned forward with the sort of familiar ease that made it look as though the two of them had been close for years. The caption was even worse.DID STAR COUPLE TINSLEY AND ALEXEI ONLY DATE FOR THE SHOW? RUMORS SWIRL AS TINSLEY IS SPOTTED MORE FREQUENTLY WITH JUN-KAI FOLLOWING HIS BROKEN ENGAGEMENT TO HER STEPSISTER.I stared at the screen, my irritation rapidly turning into something much uglier.I enlarged the photograph, examining Jun-Kai’s expression. He looked perfectly pleased with himself, as though the universe had finally handed him an opportunity he had been waiting for.Of course, he was pleased. He had been waiting for an opportunity.I knew Jun-Kai well enough to recognise that he rarely did anything without considering what he stood to gain from it. H
~Alexei~I had checked my phone seventeen times in the last thirty minutes.Seventeen.And every single time, I had found absolutely nothing that could explain why I was still pacing around my living room like a man who had lost his mind.Tinsley had said she was coming over today. She had called me less than an hour ago, informing me of her plans as casually as though she were telling an ordinary friend she would be stopping by to borrow a book. She hadn’t even given me enough notice to prepare myself for her visit, yet somehow, that short conversation had been enough to ruin whatever peace I had been enjoying that morning.I had been looking forward to seeing her ever since we ended the show, but I would rather die than admit how much her presence or, more accurately, the possibility of her presence had begun to affect me.I picked up my phone again. No new messages.“Unbelievable,” I muttered, tossing it onto the couch before immediately picking it up again. “She says she’s coming
~Zane~“Chloe,” I said, fixing her with a hard stare. “Tell her what happened that night. Tell her how much I had to drink and how I could barely keep my eyes open. Tell her how I woke up the following morning with no clear memory of agreeing to any of it. Go ahead. Since my mother seems to believe that being engaged to you meant you were entitled to my body, perhaps you can explain why I had no control over what happened.”Chloe shook her head frantically.“That’s not what happened, Zane!”“Then what happened?”Her lips trembled as she looked between us.“You were tired, and you had been drinking. We were together, and things just happened. I never forced you to do anything.”“Don’t lie to me.”Chloe’s face had turned pale.Mother, however, simply shook her head.“Even if things happened exactly as you’re describing, what difference does it make now? You cannot change the past. And you certainly cannot keep throwing it in Chloe’s face whenever you want an excuse to push her away.”I
~Zane~I looked between them, struggling to believe the conversation was actually happening.Everything Chloe did was somehow my fault while every objection I raised was treated as proof that I had no heart.I was expected to accept the engagement, marry her, merge our companies, and spend the rest of my life pretending I loved her.And if I refused, I would become the villain in a story where Chloe was always the helpless woman who had done nothing wrong.I was sick of it.“Do you want to know what I find interesting about this entire situation?” I asked, taking a step closer. “Everyone keeps talking about how much Chloe loves me, but nobody ever seems interested in asking whether I love her. Nobody cares whether I want to marry her or whether I want to spend the rest of my life waking up beside her. Apparently, my only responsibility is to make sure she gets everything she wants, even if it means sacrificing my own happiness.”“Love isn’t always about what you want!” Mother shot bac
