Chapter 5: A Theory
Aurora The idea that my husband might still be alive haunted me for days, weeks, even. Damon had been in and out of the prison cell, preparing for the appeal. He hired a private investigator to look into the city where the supposed murder happened. I didn’t want to believe Bryan was alive. There was no way he would let me go through everything I went through. It was simply impossible. So today, as I waited for my meeting with Damon, my heart was racing. When the time finally came, I hurried to see him. “You look like you have a lot to say,” Damon said, his eyes scanning my face. “I do,” I replied quickly. “I don’t think Bryan is dead. I refuse to believe Bryan would let me go to jail for a murder that didn’t exist. I know you may not like him…” “Why wouldn’t I like him?” Damon cut in sharply. “I’m here as your legal advisor, not as your ex-boyfriend. I’m only doing my job.” I paused, biting my lip, then continued. “Whatever theory you have that he’s alive is obviously not possible…” “Did you see your husband’s body?” he interrupted again. “Or did you just assume he was dead because it was all over the news?” “I…I…uhm…” My voice faltered. “I couldn’t see it because of the Wolfes’ attitude towards me, but it was everywhere on the news. I’m sure if there was no solid case, the police would never have made it one. And the judge…” “Firstly,” Damon leaned forward, his voice firm, “anything can happen in a corrupt system. The Wolfe family works with the government. Anything can happen. I have to prove either he’s alive or you didn’t do it. It has to be one of those two.” “It’s the other,” I said quickly. “Bryan wouldn’t do that to me. He loves me so much, and I know he would never do anything to hurt me…” “Hmm…” Damon smirked faintly. “So…do you know about his relationship with Amara?” “What relationship? They work together. She’s his creative director. I know about that.” He gave me a long, hard look. “You are so naïve. That’s why you’re so easy to mess with.” “Look…” I snapped. “Are you here to insult me or play mind games with me?” “He’s been having an affair with Amara for a long time now. And I have evidence, just a little I got from my digging.” “No way…” My hands shook as I opened the envelope he slid across the table. Inside were pictures, Amara and Bryan wrapped in each other’s arms. Some were at family events I wasn’t allowed to attend. These pictures were taken long before his death. “How did you get this?” I asked in a trembling voice. “I have my ways,” Damon said coolly. “That’s why I keep saying, i am the only one who can help you out of the shackles of the Wolfe family.” “Today’s meeting is over,” I whispered. Standing up quickly, I walked back toward my cell. I didn’t want Damon to see me bawling my eyes out. The moment I stepped inside, I threw myself on the hard prison bed. My heart shattered into pieces. I wanted to stop crying, I really did. I wanted to hold myself together but everything was falling apart. “Your visitor has a message for you,” the guard announced loudly. “Aurora! Your visitor has a message for you!” he repeated. I dragged myself up, wiped my tears, and took the folded note. It was from Damon. I opened it and read: “You have to keep emotions aside if you actually want to leave this place. I can’t say what I’m not sure of. The possibility of Bryan being alive is 89%, and you should be happy, because if he is truly alive, that automatically means you’re free to go. You can sulk for as long as you want because of this discovery, but get a grip because your appeal is in two weeks. If my team and I can’t set you free, with the influence of the Wolfe family, you’ll be spending the rest of your life here and you won’t watch your son grow. Pull yourself together.” I crushed the paper in my hand and tossed it aside. I could feel Damon’s attitude through his words, but he was right. The circumstances around Bryan’s death had always felt strange. Everything happened so fast. But…it’s been six months. If he were alive, there’s no way he’d still be hiding. That was impossible. “Bryan isn’t alive,” I whispered to myself. “That’s impossible.” I kept on saying that to myself until I fell asleep, my world was finally quiet again . The next morning, I didn’t get out of bed. I had no motivation to move; my mind was clouded with thoughts. I picked up my phone and called my mom, asking her if Amara could pay me a visit. “I want to speak to her…” I said softly. “Why? She’s a lost cause. It’s sad we had to find out the hard way that she isn’t on our side,” Mom replied bitterly. “Amara and Bryan were dating while he was alive…” I whispered, my voice trembling. “What! Who told you that?” Her tone shot up in shock. “Damon… who else? We’ve been meeting for a while now while he prepares for the appeal. He’s been saying a whole lot of crazy things.” “Like what?” Mom pressed, her voice sharp with curiosity. “I can’t say it, Mom… it’s just some stupid stuff. But can you pass a message to Amara?” “I haven’t seen her for a while. I heard she’s out of the country. I don’t give a damn about her… our focus should be getting you out of here,” she said firmly. “Mom… how is Jake? Have you been able to speak to him or contact him? I really want to see him. He hasn’t visited me since I left home,” I said, choking on my own tears. “He’s a child… he’s obviously influenced by them,” she said, her voice softer now. “So you’re saying my son thinks I’m a murderer?” My voice cracked as I asked. “Rora, honey… he’s still a child. He’s just four. He doesn’t hate you! Don’t think about it too much.” “Mom… would it sound crazy if someone said Bryan is alive?” “Why do you say that? That’s ridiculous!” she snapped. “Damon has a theory…” I murmured, my voice was barely a whisper and that was because even I was still finding hard to believe.“What theory?” my mom asked , she didn’t seem like she wanted any suspense and I needed to speak immediately.
I swallowed hard before leaning closer to the glass, lowering my tone, I couldn’t bring myself to say it.
“He thinks…” I paused to study her expression .
“ He thinks what ?”
“ He thinks Bryan might be alive “ I finally said .
Her eyes widened, but only for a second before she shook her head.
“Rora, I know… I know it’s hard to be in a place like this. I know you’re being bullied and treated like trash, and it breaks my heart. I know you want to see your son, but that doesn’t mean you should start making up crazy stories.”
Chapter 23: Might Be a Bad IdeaAURORAI wasn’t sure if I was making the right decision, but I had no choice. I needed to get them off my neck. The threats were scary and it kept on coming . I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing, especially after Bryan’s mother announced on the company platform that I was the new owner. I knew this was a trap, but I was willingly falling into it.For someone who said she didn’t want to involve Damon in her life anymore, he was the first person I called and that was only because I needed advice. I just wanted his help, not friendship or whatever that was. I needed professional legal advice. I know i told him to stay out of my path but he was the one who titled himself as “my legal guardian “ and if i needed help _ Legal help , i could go to him right ? afterall he wasn’t just my ex fiancee , he was a lawyer too , a good one at that . “So… you’ve decided to accept it?” Emilia asked, an eyebrow raised and her eyes searching mine. I nodded. My mom scof
22: LEGAL GUIDE. DAMONI was checking my phone every minute to see if Rora had responded to my offer, but it was still left on read. Maybe I was doing too much. Maybe she didn’t want me around and it was making her uncomfortable. But I had no intentions of getting back together or letting my actions be mistaken for affection. I was just repaying an old debt.“You haven’t touched your food…” Elsa spoke.I turned. She was seated opposite me, stuffing her face with pancakes. I was beginning to regret letting her stay with me during weekends, it only meant she was going to be in my business.“I don’t eat breakfast.”“Well, good for you. It tastes good.”I pushed the chair back and stood, heading to my room.“I called Rora…”Elsa’s words made me pause mid-step. I waited for her to continue, and when she didn’t, I turned back to the dining area.“You guys spoke? How was it? Did you plan on meeting?”“No. It wasn’t even long enough to plan a meeting,” she scoffed, her face hardening.“What
21: Trouble in a not so ParadiseAURORAMy morning alarm went off for the third time, and I was about to hit snooze when my mom barged in and threw a pillow at me. I stretched, trying to get up, but my whole body ached.“You have a visitor!”“What? It’s so early in the morning,” I yawned, turning to the other side of the bed and covering myself with my duvet.“It’s 11 a.m. What do you mean too early?” my mom yelled, dragging the duvet off me. I tried to grab it back, but she threw it to the other side of the room. I rolled my eyes and stood up.“I can’t wait to leave your house,” I said jokingly, and she burst into laughter.“Me too. Emilia is in the living room,” she said as she walked off. How could she just drop a bombshell like that and leave? Emilia? I jumped out of bed and ran to the living room. Emilia was back? She had taken a long leave when she got married, and a few weeks later, I was thrown into prison. I hadn’t seen her since then, though she always sent messages when I
20: A Heart Like StoneAURORAMy mom chasing me out of the house was not the reaction I had expected. There was no way I could talk her out of it especially after I had embarrassed her like that. For someone who valued her ego so much, I could only imagine what it must have felt like when Bryan’s mom called.“I just wanted to see my son. I never knew things would escalate…” I muttered, my head bowed to the floor.“He doesn’t want to see you! What part of that do you not understand? I told you! Didn’t I?” she yelled.“I just wanted to see him…” I repeated, doing my best to hold back my tears.“What is your problem? Haven’t you suffered enough? Why can’t you come back to your senses? I told you I was going to handle it! You just got out of prison, and you went there? Didn’t Damon tell you about the court order?” She paused, then turned to Damon.“Didn’t you tell her they now have custody and she can only see him when they permit it?”“I did,” he replied, his voice barely above a whispe
19: Walk of ShameAURORAMy mom was probably still sleeping. I prayed I wasn’t wrong. I turned to Damon, who was focused on the road, refusing to make eye contact with me.“You can stop me at that drugstore over there. I need to get an ointment for my wound, and I’ll walk home. My house is just a few walks away from there,” I murmured, fixing my eyes outside the window.“I’ll take you home. Stay in the car, I’ll get you the drugs, and we can go from there.”“No! I don’t need your help, and I’d appreciate it if you don’t stress it. With that being said, please stop the car!”“Okay,” he said immediately, and the car came to a halt.I was shocked he didn’t press on. He switched off the engine and let me out. Before I could say anything else, he drove off.“Uhmm… that was quick.” I scoffed. My forehead had stopped bleeding, but I needed ointment for it and maybe pain relief, because my ankle was hurting. I started limping toward the store when I suddenly realized I was walking into a sto
Chapter 18: Your SideDAMON“Whose side are you on, Damon?”Her eyes met mine; she was searching for answers. My heart spoke, but my mouth didn’t. My heart was racing; I took a deep breath but didn’t respond.“Your side. I am on your side. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t have tried to get you out, I said in my head, but I didn’t tell her.”“You should go home and change,” I said, looking away. Her body was still on mine; I cleared my throat and she helped herself up.“You are bleeding. We should get you cleaned up and take you home.”“I asked you a question. Don’t try to change the topic. I am aware I’m soaked and bleeding. You haven’t answered my question.”I took a deep breath, avoiding her eyes. I stood up. It wasn’t easy to say what my heart wanted to say. I didn’t want to complicate things further for her. What she wanted me to confirm would make everything messy.“I am on nobody’s side. What you did was embarrassing and uncalled for, and that’s why I asked you to leave and took you out
