Reid's POV

The photograph wouldn't stay still in my hand. I kept setting it down and picking it back up, like putting enough distance between us would make the figure in the frame come into focus, make the blur behind Audrey's shoulder resolve into something I could act on instead of something I could only fear.

I opened my phone and scrolled back through eleven months of messages I'd never answered properly.

Reid, please just listen to me.

I know how this looks. I need you to trust me anyway.

I'm not lying to you. I've never lied to you.

Not one reply from me that wasn't some version of not now or we'll talk later or silence dressed up as patience. I set the phone face-down on the desk next to the photograph, next to the surveillance stills, next to a note that said goodbye in handwriting that hadn't shaken once.

She was the only person in three years who had never once lied to me. And I'd spent three years deciding she had.

I stood, walked to the cabinet by the window, and pulled out the honeymoon photograph I'd set aside earlier, glass still cracked, her blood still dried into the corner of the frame where I'd cut my hand. I wrapped it in a shirt from my closet, the way you wrap something you're afraid of breaking further, and set it inside my desk drawer instead of throwing it away.

Cam watched me do all of it without saying a word.

"Find my wife," I said, when I finally looked up. "I don't care what it costs."

My security chief answered on the first ring.

"Marcus. I need every resource we have, starting now."

"Sir?"

"Every private investigator on our payroll and every one we can hire by the hour. Every airport contact who owes us a favor. Every bank we do business with, I want eyes on any account with her name attached to it, even accounts she closed. Every business lead, every hotel chain, every rental agency in every city she has any reason to have flown to."

A pause on the line, brief enough that most people wouldn't have caught it. "That's a significant deployment, sir. Scope?"

"The scope is I don't care what it costs. Find her."

"Understood. I'll have a team assembled within the hour."

Nobody on the other end of that call asked why the man who'd spent three years methodically dismantling the Whitmore family was now emptying his own resources to find the last Whitmore standing. Nobody questioned it at all. I hung up before I had to explain something I didn't have words for yet, that this wasn't strategy anymore, wasn't revenge, wasn't anything I recognized from the last three years of my life. It was just fear, plain and total, the kind that doesn't stop to count what it costs.

"The investigator should see this," Cam said, nodding at the photograph still sitting on my desk. "If someone's been watching Audrey, he needs to know before he keeps digging blind."

We drove in silence. Daniels met us at the door of his office before I'd even reached for the buzzer, like he'd been watching the street.

"I recovered the backup," he said, leading us inside. "But that's not what you need to hear first."

"Then what do I need to hear."

"The original drive Audrey brought you, the one that came up empty when you plugged it in." He sat down heavily behind his desk. "It wasn't corrupted. I told your friend that already. What I didn't tell him is that three days after Audrey left that footage with me, someone broke into this office."

"Broke in," I repeated.

"Cash in the drawer, untouched. Equipment worth more than my car, still sitting exactly where it was." Daniels' jaw worked. "They went through one filing cabinet. Took every physical document connected to the Sterling Calloway case. Left everything else alone."

The room tilted slightly, the way a room does when a piece finally fits somewhere you didn't want it to fit.

"They didn't want money," I said slowly. "They wanted the case to disappear."

"They wanted her to look like a liar," Cam said. "That's not theft. That's sabotage."

Daniels stood and led us down a short hallway to a back room I hadn't known was there, a storage space, metal shelving along both walls, one section of it stripped bare while the shelves around it sat undisturbed, thick with dust that hadn't been touched in years.

"Cameras were disabled for exactly forty minutes," he said. "Long enough to do this and nothing else." He gestured at the empty shelf, at a lock on the door frame that had been forced clean through instead of picked. "Whoever did it knew exactly what they were looking for, and exactly how long they had before anyone would notice the feed had dropped."

I stared at the gap on the shelf where a case file that could have saved my marriage had sat for who knew how long before someone erased it out of existence.

"Someone has been rewriting history," I said.

Nobody answered that, because there wasn't anything to add to it.

We were halfway back down the hallway when Daniels' phone rang. He glanced at the screen, frowned, and answered anyway.

"Daniels."

Silence. I watched his face change before he'd said a word, the stillness of a man listening to something he wished he could hang up on.

Then, low enough that I almost missed it, a voice came through the speaker, distorted into something barely human.

"You should have left the past buried."

The line went dead in his hand.

Daniels lowered the phone slowly, like it had gotten heavier while he held it. His face had turned to the color of the dust on those empty shelves.

"They know," he said quietly. "They know we're here."

Reid's POVThane didn't say her name. He didn't have to."Blair's mother," Audrey said.It wasn't a question. She'd gone very still beside me, both hands flat on the table. I knew that posture. It was how she sat in a boardroom when the numbers were worse than she'd been told."Letters," Thane said. "Before the wedding, and for years after. I wrote them the old way because that was how I'd always written to her. Nobody else ever saw that hand.""Years after," I said. "You were married.""I was married." He looked at Audrey. "I never wrote a line I'd have been ashamed for your mother to read. That's not much of a defense. It's the only one I have.""No," Audrey said. "It isn't."She didn't raise her voice. I'd have preferred it if she had. She took her hand off the table and put it in her lap, where I couldn't see it."Where are they now?" Vivienne asked."She kept them in a cedar box in her closet. I asked her once to burn them. She said she'd sooner burn herself." Thane rubbed his th

Audrey's POV My father held the slip of paper the way you hold something that might still be hot. "Read it again," Vivienne said. "Slowly. Look at the notary stamp." He did. I leaned over his arm and saw a round seal, smudged, with a name I didn't know and a date in the spring of that year. "Harold Pruitt," Vivienne said. "He died on the ninth of April. The date on that page is the twentieth." "He could have stamped it early," Reid said. "Then it wouldn't carry a date after his funeral." She sat down across from us. "It took me nine years to find the county clerk who kept Pruitt's commission book. It took twenty more to get someone to let me photograph it. The last entry is the eighth. After that, nothing. Whoever made this used a dead man's seal and hoped nobody would check." "Twenty years," I said. "I had time. I didn't have much else." She said it flatly, without self-pity. "I wasn't trying to clear your father, Audrey. I didn't know he was your father. I was trying to fin

"You said you've been collecting this for thirty years," I said. "Start there." "I said I'd been collecting what you'd need." Vivienne pulled a chair back. "Not everything. You collect what you can carry and you bury the rest, and you hope the burying holds." "It didn't hold," Thane said. "That's why we're in your kitchen at one in the morning." "Don't lecture me about burying things, Thane. You buried a woman. I buried a brother." The room went still. "Our mother," I said. "You said I have her eyes." "You do." Vivienne looked at me, softer now. "Her name was Elise. She died when you were four days old. Not in childbirth. After. There was a fire at the house where she was staying, past the county line, and everyone who could have told the story differently died with her." "Except you," Audrey said. "Except me. I was

Audrey's POV The lake house sat at the end of a road that hadn't seen a grader in years, gravel giving way to dirt, dirt giving way to grass grown up through the ruts. My father drove, which surprised me, until I understood he didn't trust either of us to find it in the dark and didn't trust himself to stay behind while we tried. Nobody spoke for the better part of the hour. Reid sat beside me in the back seat with the folded birth record still in his jacket pocket, and every few minutes I felt him reach up and touch it through the fabric, like he needed to keep confirming it hadn't disappeared, hadn't turned out to be some elaborate cruelty invented for one long, terrible night. "You don't have to talk," I said finally, quiet enough that my father couldn't hear over the engine. "But you don't have to not talk either. Whatever you're doing right now, I'm here for it." "I keep trying to remember if I ever looked like him," Reid said. "My father. The one who raised me. I used to th

Audrey's POVFor a moment none of us breathed."That's not funny," Reid said. Quiet. Too quiet, the way he got when something had actually landed instead of just glanced off him."I'm not laughing." My father sank back into the chair he'd knocked over earlier, righted now, though he looked like it might tip again under him at any second. "I'm not saying it to hurt you. I'm saying it because I think it might finally be time someone did.""Explain it," I said. "Now. All of it, in order, the way you should have thirty years ago."He pressed both hands flat against the desk like he needed the wood to hold him up."The summer before you were born," he started, looking at me but clearly speaking past me, into the past. "I told you there was a girl at the lake house. Vivienne's mother. What I didn't tell you is that she wasn't the only complication that year." His eyes finally lifted to Reid. "Your father and I built something together before either of us built anything with our wives. Befor

Reid's POV Nobody moved for three rings. Thane stood frozen by the toppled chair, staring toward the staircase like the sound itself might come down the steps and get a good look at him before he had to answer for anything. Audrey had gone rigid beside me, her hand tightening in mine hard enough that I felt her pulse in it. "Whose line is that," I said. "My study." His voice had lost whatever composure the last ten minutes had cost him. "A direct number. Unlisted. It was disconnected eleven years ago. I had it disconnected myself." "Then someone reconnected it." He didn't answer that. He was already moving, faster than I'd have credited a man his age with, and we followed him up the stairs two at a time, the ringing growing louder the closer we got, insistent, patient, like whoever was on the other end had all night and knew it. The study door was open. It was never open. Thane kept it locked even when the house was empty, I'd learned that much just from the number of times Au
