Reid's POV

The applause started before I reached the head of the conference table.

"Congratulations, Reid."

"A brilliant move."

"You've changed the future of this company."

Hands reached for mine from every direction. I accepted the smiles and praise, but none of it felt like a victory.

"Whitmore Holdings is officially yours," the chairman announced. "Three years of negotiations, and today it's finally done."

The room erupted.

A celebration.

A milestone.

A dream come true.

At least, that was what everyone else saw.

"Mr. Calloway," the chairman said, lifting his glass. "A toast."

Champagne filled the crystal glasses.

"To new beginnings."

Everyone repeated the words.

I raised my glass.

Then set it down untouched.

"I'm afraid you'll have to celebrate without me."

The room went quiet.

"Everything alright?" the chairman asked.

I adjusted my jacket and headed toward the door.

"I have somewhere else to be."

A lie.

The truth was that I couldn't sit there pretending this victory meant something.

The moment I stepped into the hallway, Lewis approached.

"Sir."

His expression stopped me.

Not business.

Concern.

"A courier arrived while you were in the meeting."

He handed me a brown envelope.

"No return address."

"Leave it on my desk."

"I would have, but it's marked personal."

I took it from him.

Then I saw the handwriting.

Audrey.

For weeks, I had convinced myself her silence was anger. Pride. A way to punish me.

But holding that envelope, a different thought surfaced.

What if she wasn't waiting for me?

What if she was already done?

I entered my office and closed the door.

The seal opened easily.

The first page slipped out.

Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.

I stared at the words.

Then I turned the page.

Her signature was already there.

Complete.

Final.

A smaller piece of paper fell onto the desk.

I picked it up.

One sentence.

I hope your revenge was worth it. Goodbye, Reid.

My fingers tightened around the note.

Goodbye.

Not "we need to talk."

Not "I'll see you soon."

Goodbye.

The word meant she had already closed the door.

I remembered the night before our wedding.

She stood outside her parents' house, laughing because I refused to leave.

"You'll see me tomorrow," she teased.

"I know."

"So stop acting like you're losing me."

She smiled.

"See you soon, Reid."

I looked at the divorce papers.

This time, she wasn't saying that.

A knock broke the silence.

I didn't answer.

The door opened anyway.

"I'm sorry, sir," Lewis said. "Mr. Harrison is here."

I looked up.

"He said if you refuse to see him, you'll regret it."

My eyes returned to the folder.

Audrey hadn't fought.

Hadn't begged.

She had simply walked away.

I closed it.

"Send him in."

I focused on the figure behind her.

The image was unclear.

But the face wasn't.

I knew him.

My stomach dropped.

Because the person watching Audrey wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't an enemy hiding in the shadows.

It was someone I had welcomed into my life.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside us all along.

For years, I had believed he was the one person who never chose a side.

The one person who stayed when everyone else walked away.

The one person who helped me search for the truth.

But now, I was staring at evidence that he had been hiding something from me.

Cam watched me carefully.

"Reid..."

I didn't hear him.

My eyes stayed on the photograph.

The same person who had helped me search for answers.

The same person who claimed to be protecting us.

The same person who knew every weakness, every secret, every move we made.

How much had he known?

How long had he been lying?

My fingers tightened around the picture.

"How long?" I whispered.

Cam's expression changed.

"What?"

"How long had he been watching her?"

For a moment, Cam said nothing.

And that silence answered more than words could.

A cold realization settled over me.

Audrey hadn't simply walked away from our marriage.

She had been running from something.

Someone.

And I had spent weeks blaming the one person who had been trying to survive.

I looked at Cam.

"Tell me where she went."

His face hardened.

"Reid..."

"Where is my wife?"

The silence that followed felt like a warning.

Then Cam said the one thing I wasn't prepared to hear.

"She didn't leave because she wanted a new life."

He pushed the photograph closer.

"She left because she knew someone was coming for her."

My heartbeat stopped.

Because suddenly, finding Audrey was no longer about winning her back.

It was about finding her before the person hunting her did.

And the worst part was...

I had no idea if I was already too late.

Reid's POVThane didn't say her name. He didn't have to."Blair's mother," Audrey said.It wasn't a question. She'd gone very still beside me, both hands flat on the table. I knew that posture. It was how she sat in a boardroom when the numbers were worse than she'd been told."Letters," Thane said. "Before the wedding, and for years after. I wrote them the old way because that was how I'd always written to her. Nobody else ever saw that hand.""Years after," I said. "You were married.""I was married." He looked at Audrey. "I never wrote a line I'd have been ashamed for your mother to read. That's not much of a defense. It's the only one I have.""No," Audrey said. "It isn't."She didn't raise her voice. I'd have preferred it if she had. She took her hand off the table and put it in her lap, where I couldn't see it."Where are they now?" Vivienne asked."She kept them in a cedar box in her closet. I asked her once to burn them. She said she'd sooner burn herself." Thane rubbed his th

Audrey's POV My father held the slip of paper the way you hold something that might still be hot. "Read it again," Vivienne said. "Slowly. Look at the notary stamp." He did. I leaned over his arm and saw a round seal, smudged, with a name I didn't know and a date in the spring of that year. "Harold Pruitt," Vivienne said. "He died on the ninth of April. The date on that page is the twentieth." "He could have stamped it early," Reid said. "Then it wouldn't carry a date after his funeral." She sat down across from us. "It took me nine years to find the county clerk who kept Pruitt's commission book. It took twenty more to get someone to let me photograph it. The last entry is the eighth. After that, nothing. Whoever made this used a dead man's seal and hoped nobody would check." "Twenty years," I said. "I had time. I didn't have much else." She said it flatly, without self-pity. "I wasn't trying to clear your father, Audrey. I didn't know he was your father. I was trying to fin

"You said you've been collecting this for thirty years," I said. "Start there." "I said I'd been collecting what you'd need." Vivienne pulled a chair back. "Not everything. You collect what you can carry and you bury the rest, and you hope the burying holds." "It didn't hold," Thane said. "That's why we're in your kitchen at one in the morning." "Don't lecture me about burying things, Thane. You buried a woman. I buried a brother." The room went still. "Our mother," I said. "You said I have her eyes." "You do." Vivienne looked at me, softer now. "Her name was Elise. She died when you were four days old. Not in childbirth. After. There was a fire at the house where she was staying, past the county line, and everyone who could have told the story differently died with her." "Except you," Audrey said. "Except me. I was

Audrey's POV The lake house sat at the end of a road that hadn't seen a grader in years, gravel giving way to dirt, dirt giving way to grass grown up through the ruts. My father drove, which surprised me, until I understood he didn't trust either of us to find it in the dark and didn't trust himself to stay behind while we tried. Nobody spoke for the better part of the hour. Reid sat beside me in the back seat with the folded birth record still in his jacket pocket, and every few minutes I felt him reach up and touch it through the fabric, like he needed to keep confirming it hadn't disappeared, hadn't turned out to be some elaborate cruelty invented for one long, terrible night. "You don't have to talk," I said finally, quiet enough that my father couldn't hear over the engine. "But you don't have to not talk either. Whatever you're doing right now, I'm here for it." "I keep trying to remember if I ever looked like him," Reid said. "My father. The one who raised me. I used to th

Audrey's POVFor a moment none of us breathed."That's not funny," Reid said. Quiet. Too quiet, the way he got when something had actually landed instead of just glanced off him."I'm not laughing." My father sank back into the chair he'd knocked over earlier, righted now, though he looked like it might tip again under him at any second. "I'm not saying it to hurt you. I'm saying it because I think it might finally be time someone did.""Explain it," I said. "Now. All of it, in order, the way you should have thirty years ago."He pressed both hands flat against the desk like he needed the wood to hold him up."The summer before you were born," he started, looking at me but clearly speaking past me, into the past. "I told you there was a girl at the lake house. Vivienne's mother. What I didn't tell you is that she wasn't the only complication that year." His eyes finally lifted to Reid. "Your father and I built something together before either of us built anything with our wives. Befor

Reid's POV Nobody moved for three rings. Thane stood frozen by the toppled chair, staring toward the staircase like the sound itself might come down the steps and get a good look at him before he had to answer for anything. Audrey had gone rigid beside me, her hand tightening in mine hard enough that I felt her pulse in it. "Whose line is that," I said. "My study." His voice had lost whatever composure the last ten minutes had cost him. "A direct number. Unlisted. It was disconnected eleven years ago. I had it disconnected myself." "Then someone reconnected it." He didn't answer that. He was already moving, faster than I'd have credited a man his age with, and we followed him up the stairs two at a time, the ringing growing louder the closer we got, insistent, patient, like whoever was on the other end had all night and knew it. The study door was open. It was never open. Thane kept it locked even when the house was empty, I'd learned that much just from the number of times Au
