Chapter 4

Penulis: E. L. Knox
Contraceptives? I looked at Daniel in shock, shaking. “What contraceptives?”

Daniel avoided my gaze and fidgeted with his tie. “What matters is, you can’t possibly be pregnant.”

I stared at him and suddenly understood. The “vitamins” he gave me every day, supposedly imported from Switzerland, were contraceptives.

No wonder the doctors kept saying my hormone levels were too low to conceive. I even took supplements and did yoga every day to reduce my stress, all in the hopes of having a baby.

Three months ago, I stopped taking the vitamins because I was worried about their contents. Ironically, my caution foiled his careful plan.

The pain in my belly intensified. Blood rushed out from between my legs. I looked at the red blossoming on my white dress and finally understood what was happening.

I grabbed his hand desperately. “I’m begging you… Call the ambulance…”

Daniel hesitated, but Victoria quickly interrupted him. “I studied medicine at Johns Hopkins University, but I’d never seen bleeding like that from a miscarriage. She should have done more research before pretending.”

“Yeah, Dad!” The girl hugged Daniel’s leg. “She was yelling at us all angrily just a moment ago. She must be acting!”

The boy looked at him innocently, too. “She even threatened to call the cops.”

“No, I never…” The pain made it hard for me to speak.

Daniel’s expression grew colder. He looked at the children’s innocent expressions and shook his head disappointedly. “Children won’t lie.”

“I’m really… pregnant…” I tried to explain, but he had already straightened up.

“Enough,” he said coldly. “If you get up now, I’ll pretend nothing happened.”

Victoria held his arm. “Don’t be mad. She just got carried away.”

“Let’s go.” Daniel gave me one last look, with an expression I did not recognize. “If you still want to stay here, clean up the mess yourself.”

My bleeding got worse, creating a crimson puddle on the floor. My gaze began to blur as I watched him lead the two kids into the elevator.

I would not stop bleeding. I could feel my life slipping away, but I could not die here. I could not let them get what they wanted.

My phone screen lit up in my hazy vision. It was a message from Robert, saying, [The car is waiting in the basement car park. Hang in there.]

Robert was my father’s old comrade, who had been protecting me in secret. I used the last of my strength to dial the emergency call button.

If I survived, I swore to make them pay!

If I died… No, I would never die! Not before I avenged my baby!

As my vision went black, I heard footsteps rushing toward me.

That night, Daniel finally got the kids to settle down in bed. Massaging his temples, he asked the butler off-handedly, “Where’s Emma?”

The butler lowered his head, his voice trembling. “Mr. Hudson, she… has passed away…”

Daniel froze instantly. “What did you say?”

“The doctor said she… haemorrhaged… By the time she reached the hospital, she was already…”The butler choked. “The body has already been cremated…”

  • My Husband’s Children   Chapter 9

Victoria lost her mind not long after she was sent to the women’s prison. The prison doctor said she had serious schizophrenia, talking to herself every day as though her children were still with her.The children wound up with a horrible foster family. After losing their wealth and gaining a name as the children of a criminal, they were bullied every day at school.Daniel was sentenced to twenty-five years in jail. As a former Wall Street executive, he was tormented every day. The prisoners who went bankrupt due to financial crimes took out their anger on him.Within a year, he was paralyzed from the waist down due to a spinal injury from the repeated beatings. He spent every day staring at the ceiling in a daze. The nurses said he kept calling a name in his sleep — “Emma”.The Winstons had all their assets confiscated for money laundering. Their hotel empire came crashing down overnight. The Hudson Fund also went bankrupt over the insider trading scandal. The investors they ha

I then sent the DNA report and Victoria’s abortion record to Daniel’s office anonymously. As I expected, he started desperately gathering proof of her crimes once he read the documents. Those two conmen were tearing at each other’s throats. The next morning, the Hudson Fund suddenly halted all their business and ordered all employees to leave the building. Daniel walked to the conference room, wearing a black suit and holding a file.Victoria was already waiting in the conference room, immaculately dressed and smiling smugly. Her grin froze when she saw the file in Daniel’s hands.“Victoria, we need to talk.” Daniel’s voice was eerily calm. He put the DNA report on the table. “Jack and Sophia aren’t my kids.”Victoria had gone pale, but she tried to stay calm. “That report is fake. Where did you get it?”“I tested them myself. Three times.” Daniel smirked coldly. “I went to three different labs, but the results were the same. Their biological father is your classmate from Harvar

It happened to be Christmas on the day I secretly returned to New York.Fifth Avenue was covered in lights, Macy’s was playing cheerful music… and the Hudson Fund’s office building was enveloped in storm clouds.“Mr. Hudson hasn’t worked properly in months,” the barista at the café whispered to me. “Apparently, he’s locked himself up in his office, staring at old photographs.”I felt nothing but disgust. He did not give a hoot about me back when I was alive, but now he was pretending to be a grieving lover. Was I supposed to be happy that I broke his heart at the cost of my life? What about my child? Who was going to avenge the baby who never even got to see the world?I stood across the street from the building, watching as a luxury car pulled up in front of the entrance. Victoria should be heading back to Switzerland soon, but the children had not officially registered at a school in New York yet. As I watched, Victoria got out of the car, wearing sunglasses. She then walk

I began to customise a detailed revenge plan. First of all, I needed a new identity. Robert used his contacts in the FBI to get me a new set of ID. From now on, I was Susan Harris, an investment consultant who just returned to the States from London. “The Winstons have been looking for an overseas investment consultant.” Robert pointed at the recruitment notice on the screen. “With your abilities, landing the job will be a cinch.”I carefully analyzed the Winstons’ financial records and found many interesting loopholes. They were not particularly skilled at money laundering, with large amounts of money flowing to the Cayman Islands under so-called “art investments” and “charity donations”.“Is this evidence enough?” I asked.“Enough for the FBI to start a case,” Robert said. “But we need more evidence from the inside.”I smiled. “Then I’ll be their inside woman.”For the next month, I desperately studied financial products and international taxes. I only slept four hours a day

I was not dead, of course. They would never know that the cremated body was just a nameless Jane Doe in the hospital morgue. When I woke up, I was in a private hospital in Geneva, with the snowy Alpine peaks outside my window. The nurse who was changing my IV drip was moved to tears when she saw I was awake. “You’re finally awake, Miss Harris! You’ve been unconscious for a month!”I stared at the snow outside, my memories gradually returning to me. My father’s comrade had reached me in time. He used his special connections to transfer me out of the hospital, fake my death, and take me away from the country. I could only walk after resting two months in Switzerland. The woman I saw in the mirror was reduced to skin and bones… but she was still alive.I had planned to leave New York with my baby, but they had to kill even that dream of mine. I rubbed my flat belly, thinking of the life it once held.Hatred surrounded my heart like thorny vines, torturing me every day. Whenever I
